lái zhě bù shàn
Beware of strangers with hidden agendas

The fuller Chinese saying is: 來者不善，善者不來. Those who come are not well-intentioned; those who are well-intentioned would not come this way. It expresses suspicion toward someone who suddenly appears, especially when their motives are unclear. A closer English idea might be something like “beware of Greeks bearing gifts.”

A dagger hidden in a smile
笑裡藏刀
xiào lǐ cáng dāo
Hiding malice behind a friendly façade

This vivid idiom warns about someone who appears warm and friendly but secretly intends harm.

The phrase is strongly associated with the Tang Dynasty official Li Lin Fu, who was described in historical texts as someone who smiled kindly while plotting against people behind the scenes. Because of that reputation, 笑裡藏刀 became a classic way to describe dangerous hypocrisy or hidden hostility.

必經之路
bì jīng zhī lù
The inevitable path / the only way

This phrase refers to a necessary stage or unavoidable step in a process. It’s often used when talking about growth, success, or life experience. Difficult challenges may be described as 必經之路 because they are part of the journey toward something greater. For example: sometimes we must suffer through many terrible dramas… in order to reach the truly great ones.

jǐn yán shèn xíng

This idiom means to be extremely careful with both words and behaviour. Ding Yu Xi is famous for this phrase, and he also lives by this idiom, being very mindful of his words and actions in public life. Honestly, this is the way of life in C-ent.


Horizontally sweeping the Chinese entertainment world
橫掃內娛
héng sǎo nèi yú
Sweeping C-ent

This is a modern internet phrase. 橫掃 means sweeping across everything in one powerful motion. 內娛 refers to the domestic Chinese entertainment industry. So 橫掃內娛 describes someone dominating the entire scene – trending everywhere, winning awards, and capturing massive attention.

The word 橫 (horizontal) appears in many expressions about dominance. Someone who metaphorically “walks across the stage horizontally” implies they command the entire space.

Carved in the bones, engraved in the heart
刻骨銘心
kè gǔ míng xīn
Unforgettable

“Unforgettable” is the closest English translation, but it loses the vivid imagery. The phrase literally describes something so powerful it is carved into your bones and engraved into your heart.

In classical Chinese thought, bones and the heart represent the deepest parts of a person’s being. If something is 刻骨銘心, the experience has become part of who you are. It can describe deep love, gratitude, grief, or a life-changing event.

In emotional weight, it’s closer to expressions like “etched into my soul.”

嗑死我了
kè sǐ wǒ le

This is modern fandom slang. You may have seen the abbreviation kswl online. This is where it comes from.

The word 嗑 (kè) originally meant cracking or chewing things like sunflower seeds. Online, it evolved to mean enjoying a romantic pairing.

Fans who love a couple say they are 嗑CP (shipping a couple). When a moment is especially sweet, they might say: 嗑死我了 “I’m dying from how good this ship is.”


Thinking of you day and night
朝思暮想
zhāo sī mù xiǎng
Constant longing for someone

The idea is that from morning (朝) until evening (暮), the person never leaves your thoughts.

These two characters are very popular in CP names. For example, in 2024 Blossom there's a 朝朝暮暮 (Zhao Zhao Mu Mu), in 2026 Generation to Generation there's a 暮暮朝朝 (Mu Mu Zhao Zhao). Both evoke the feeling of thinking about someone every single day.
