Rewind.
Xu Wan Xin is a news broadcaster who finds out her stepfather has died live on air, while her company is collapsing in real time. She holds it together on camera, barely, forcing herself through the broadcast. And that's when Hu Lian Xin is out-acted by the friend crying for her crying for her father xD. To be fair, the friend can emote all she wants and Hu Lian Xin has to restrain it.Mmhmm.
I have to praise the director because he's building emotion out of everything except performance, and it works! XD
Shen Gu: "I do." !! I don't know why I need to screenshot the same expression from him, hahaha
Then he goes home, repeating it like a man savouring his own romance – with his robotic face – that he was proposed to, he accepted, no one asked, but he’s telling it anyway because it matters to him. LOL.
Gu Shen: She still proposed to me.
Gu Shen: And I accepted.
Fang Hong Sheng: Did I ask?
Gu Shen: I wanted to say it.

Meanwhile Xu Wan Xin slips into dreams of a past life, a republican-era marriage to a man who looks exactly like the one she just wed
Xu Wan Xin's reality glitches as she tries to process how the man from her dreams is now her actual husband, standing beside her in broad daylight.
Shen Gu doesn’t stop there. He sends Fang Hong Sheng, fully suited with an equally intense team (and those oversized sunglasses bodyguards), to deal with her uncle trying to swallow the company whole. Then he shows up at her press conference and tightens the “marriage act" because if they’re doing this, they’re doing it properly: he cues her to wear the ring.
Gu Shen throws himself in front of Xu Wan Xin, fully believing someone is about to throw acid on her. It’s ammonia, but that split-second decision from him says everything about his love with action. And he threatens with his best rigid face that anyone who harms his wife will answer for it legally.
Behind the scenes, Fang Hong Sheng orchestrates the counterattack against Shen Hao and Shen Ting Yuan. I LOVE all the suits.
Xu Wan Xin's grandfather wakes up… only to see his “granddaughter” and her brand-new husband standing together, looking exactly like his adopted parents. The shock nearly sends the poor man straight back to ICU. LOL.

A necklace comes into focus. It's more than just an heirloom. It’s tied to something older, something from that past life where Xu Wan Xin (Lin Shu Yi) once tore it off, rejecting what it represented: her marriage to Shen Gu. Now, in the present, Xu Wan Xin gives Shen Gu a cufflink that matches her necklace.
The Bad Shen family forces the necklace onto the auction block, and Xu Wan Xin is about to lose her grandfather’s heirloom – the blue gemstone she just said symbolizes love, and the same blue she chose for the cufflink she gave Shen Gu. And so there's no way Shen Gu lets their first real couple item slip away.

The past life. Lin Shu Yi and Shen Gu故 were blissfully in love but the murder of her father changed everything.
Lin Shu Yi thinks Shen Gu故 is a traitor working for the enemy (Japanese)… so she stabs him straight in the chest – it hurts her as much as it hurts him. And thus ends their marriage.
But the truth. He’s a double agent this whole time – protecting her, protecting the country, and carrying her father’s last wish, all in silence. And so this pair of star-crossed lovers… she walks away thinking she’s cutting off a monster. He lets her go, agonizing that he can never – UGH – explain.

Past. Lin Shu Yi is sent safely to Gang City… but she turns back one more time, searching the crowd like she’s waiting for someone. It's Shen Gu. And he is there. Hiding himself. Watching her leave.
She looks so good!
And then Lin Shu Yi dies.
And then Shen Gu dies.
And then Shen Gu dies.
All for the country. And so the world owes them a love story!
And my poor Little Grandpa finds out everything on the same day. The two people he loved most, the two who loved each other but could never be together, gone. He gets knocked down, robbed, everything taken from him, all his money, but he saved the letter Lin Shu Yi wrote to Shen Gu. Except he couldn't save Shen Gu's jade. T_T.
Present. Big Grandpa is standing there watching what feels like a miracle unfold. Awww. Because how else do you explain this? Lin Shu Yi and Shen Gu, somehow returned as Xu Wan Xin and Shen Gu, standing together again under a wishing tree like history is trying to correct itself.
Big Grandpa asks Shen Gu what his wish is. Shen Gu doesn’t answer. He just looks at Xu Wan Xin. That is the answer. Then Big Grandpa sees the jade. The one he lost all those years ago. And now it’s in Shen Gu’s hands. Shen Gu bought it as an antique simply because it felt fated to him.
This house. Big Grandpa rebuilt it. Originally, it was Lin Shu Yi and Shen Gu’s home. And hanging on the wall are four words: 回來就好 – Good That You're Back.
And he's back ~ Shen Gu's home, he phones Xu Wan Xin and tells her he's downstairs. She runs straight to the window just to see him. Awwww. This is framed so prettily!

Their first dinner: at a wonton stall, both in full white, like they stepped out of a fairytale and yet they're sharing something simple. This contrast is beautiful.
Of course Shen Gu phones Fang Hong Sheng to rub it in update him on moving into Xu Wan Xin’s place. The update is basically nothing though: separate rooms, didn't hold hands. But he still sounds so smug. xD. Which makes Fang Hong Sheng the unwilling victim of our romance.
Breaking news: Shen Gu and celebrity Shu Mei are framed as a couple by the press.
Shen Gu attacks Fang Hong Sheng with romance again xD He reports, very seriously, that Xu Wan Xin didn’t let him into her house. Fang Hong Sheng has his own update: a certain Shen Gu didn’t let him get on the plane either. But Shen Gu being shut out is… happy. Because rejection means Xu Wan Xin is jealous.
Xu Wan Xin reassures Big Grandpa that her marriage is perfectly fine. Not like she needs to hold a whole press conference to prove she’s happily married. But she agrees with him that maybe she should live with Shen Gu. Shen Gu hears it ~~

Xu Wan Xin realizes she got jealous… for nothing. And now she has to sit in that embarrassment. Meanwhile Shen Gu loves it. With paparazzi trailing them, he doesn’t avoid it. Right there in front of the cameras, he casually takes her hand like he’s been waiting for the perfect excuse to do it openly.
So what’s for dinner? Every dish with vinegar in its name. As in jealousy :D. Shen Gu is savouring every bit of Xu Wan Xin's jealousy love.

Fang Hong Sheng, our long-suffering romance victim, is also the best wingman, He knows exactly which wine Shen Gu should gift Big Grandpa (Chinese wine, obviously), and of course that perfect choice leads to no drunk-driving and Big Grandpa wants them to stay the night – in Xu Wan Xin’s room.
– and it’s just to say goodnight. That’s it. Because that's all she's doing. She’s not ready yet.
Shen Gu doesn't push. He just turns to his side and then – smiles. Because she touched his hand ~
Xu Wan Xin is upset, but genuinely shaken that Shen Gu never told her who he really was: Qingniao’s CEO. She wants answers now. And he's ready with them. Her father had met with Shen Gu to establish new partners other than with the Bad Shens. Because Shen Hao clearly wasn’t a fit marriage partner. And the father refused to trade his daughter’s future for business. That part, she understands now. But what is Shen Gu's motive?
Shen Gu tells her plainly his only reason was her. Everything else? The business, the timing, the arrangement – just excuses to stay by her side. It's good thing you're young and hot or else LOL. And then he asks, earnestly to not push him away. He love her. And she kisses him back.
Song Xi solves their PR disaster: let Xu Wan Xin interview her own husband and address rumours head on.
The interview continues. Xu Wan Xin asks Shen Gu, aside from her father’s influence to suck up to her, what was the most important factor in his success. Shen Gu pauses, smirks–and finally turns fully to the camera.
But still. The way Shen Gu is looking at Xu Wan Xin makes Fang Hong Sheng question Song Xi what genre are they even filming at this point. Is this a business interview, or a romantic variety show?

It's another thunderstorm. And Shen Gu is traumatized again. As a child, he watched his uncle, Shen Ting Yuan, steal his family’s money and twist the truth, leaving his father to die without help. Then his mother was left ill, and Shen Gu begged Shen Ting Yuan again. Rejected. He sobbed that night and it was Little Xu Wan Xin who had paid for Shen Gu's mother's hospital fees. However, it was too late. Shen Gu's mother died that night. It was a night filled with thunder and lightning. But we have out childhood connection.
Xu Wan Xin stumbles into Shen Gu’s walk-in closet and finds the shirt with her lipstick mark. And he didn’t just keep it. He gave it its own spot. It's just missing a frame.

The shirt is only showing the tip of this man’s obsessive love. Shen Gu was actually there to celebrate Xu Wan Xin's gradation but hidden under a mascot suit. She never knew until now.
How much more has he not told her? Oh – just a room full of gifts that he bought for her without knowing if he would ever have the right to give them to her. She opens one box. And it’s empty? Of course it is. He lifts his hand to show they're wearing them – the rings. Then she finds a tape of all her bloopers – oopsies :D.
We have a major business crisis because of Raymond.
But more importantly Xu Wan Xin learns the reason Shen Gu has been taking medication – not because of Raymond even though he was part of his stress. It's because of Xu Wan Xin herself. Or more specifically, the time she was about to marry someone else. That nearly broke him. …Whew. This love.
To help Shen Gu overcome the crisis, Xu Wan Xin makes a decisive move and quits her job as a broadcaster because that role of hers demands neutrality that she can no longer uphold. Because she chooses to be openly biased, firmly on Shen Gu's side, using her name and influence to pull business away from Raymond for the sake of her husband – the industry.

This sounds like an important business episode but all you need to know is Xu Wan Xi showed up for Shen Gu with a full business army.
Shen Hao's business is failing, and in the fallout with Raymond, Shen Hao knocks over his own father. The next very logical move: go full villain mode and kidnap Xu Wan Xin. Dun dun dun.
Explosion is so unnecessary LOL. But where would we get this!!!
When Shen Gu wakes up, Fang Hong Sheng Xu Wan Xin is there beside him. If it weren’t for the jade protecting him, she said he would’ve died. The jade must have saved them from the explosion too eh
Naturally Fang Hong Sheng bursts in, worried sick. But the second he sees Xu Wan Xin already there with him, he just smiles and backs out. With Song Xi.
Big Grandpa finally tells Shen Gu(顧) and Xu Wan Xin the full story about the couple who once saved him: Shen Gu(故) and Lin Shu Yi. And what a waste of an episode that just connects all the flashback we've already seen. After saving him, the two of them later built an orphanage for children with nowhere. And that orphanage is where Big Grandpa eventually adopted Xu Wan Xin.
The last time Little Grandpa saw Shen Gu (past), he promised he would tell Lin Shu Yi the truth that he's a double agent. But Shen Gu stopped Little Grandpa. Not because he didn’t love her enough, but because he loved her too much. He already knew the mission ahead was dangerous, knew there was a chance he wouldn’t survive, and if that happened, he wanted Lin Shu Yi to move on instead of waiting for someone who would never return. He never says any of this outright, but Little Grandpa understands immediately. He runs back and hugs Shen Gu tightly, insisting it won’t happen. “Miss Lin and I will wait for you in Hong Kong Gang City.” T_T. But you know what! Grandpa and FL did wait for him :’) Ep12 was all about welcoming Shen Gu home.
Big Grandpa reveals the letter Lin Shu Yi wrote to Shen Gu before she died, the letter Shen Gu never got to read.
“When the land returns to peace as it once was, you and I will marry.”
So Lin Shu Yi knew.
And now, with present Shen Gu and Xu Wan Xin reading those words together, it feels like Shen Gu has finally received the answer that never reached him in his first life. Later, Xu Wan Xin asks him if there’s a next life, will they meet again? Shen Gu says yes immediately. No hesitation at all. And Xu Wan Xin replies that if there is, she’ll recognize him first next time. And maybe she did. She unknowingly helped pay for his mother’s surgery back then. Then, with Hong Kong Gang City stretched out behind them, Shen Gu proposes to Xu Wan Xin properly this time.
And an imagined timeline? Where Big Grandpa and Xu Wan Xin mail a letter through an old-fashioned mailbox, and somewhere in another version of this story, Shen Gu finally receives Lin Shu Yi’s letter promising that when peace finally arrives, they’ll marry.

ML is so stiff, but it somehow works??? LOL. It's the camera language, the republican-era dreaminess,, and the way the drama frames this impulsive marriage as destiny. For our FL, the man from her dreams is now her actual husband, standing beside her in broad daylight. For our ML, I'm intrigued. I don't know yet if he's just reincarnated or he actually has memories from his previous life.
Also, my scene stealer: the suits. I'm loving the suits – not from the ML, but his CFO buddy.
