Mini Recaps
My goal is to pick ONE topic/highlight. It can be a major moment or the smallest little detail. You can share yours too ~
ML Ye Xin Zhi (Wei Da Xun) and FL Xu Chi (Zhao Jin Mai) have their moments, but Bu Tian Na (Hu Yi Xuan) going full princess mode to defend Xu Chi has already stolen the romantic spotlight if there were any worth stealing.

| That smile means she's texting Xu Chi. |
Shen Jin (Yang Le) is mistaken by the gynaecologist for the father of Lin Long’s (Bai Bing) fetus. His clarification:
I’m not the child’s daddy. But I am her client-daddy.

LOL. 甲方爸爸 (client-daddy) is this humorous, grovelling corporate expression for 甲方, the client: the people you may find absolutely miserable, but still have to smile at, serve, and love because they’re the ones paying you. Just like “daddies.” Hahaha. So yeah, Shen Jin is definitely not the daddy. He’s the daddy who pays this mommy to work for him.
Xu Chi: Why are you helping me?
Bu Tian Na: Because I like you.
(And they have a past. But Xu Chi doesn't remember)

This had to have been a blooper.
ღ´͈ ᵕ `͈ )♡⃛(´͈ ᵕ `͈ ღ
[Chinese] 黑莲花 Hēi lián huā. A Black Lotus archetype is openly dark and clever. They don't wait for a saviour. If someone schemes against them, they retaliate with calculated counter-schemes.
Bu Tian Na calls her Xu xiao Chi = Xu little Chi. Awwww.

(Zhou Heng was in this gif. I had to cut him out.)
Bu Tian Na’s family issue is that her father had her mother give birth to her at an old age. Because he needed a male heir. I thought this was a stepmother situation, but no that's her biological mother. But there's also this contract…Dunno.

And so:
Bu Tian Na: “Let me tell you. You saved me back then, so from now on…

[心機男 xīn jī nán] Scheming Man is a Chinese archetype like Black Lotus (Female) is. It is a man who strategically engineers things to get what he wants, like Zhou Heng approaching Bu Tian Na because of her money.
[宇宙不同 yǔ zhòu bù tóng] But Zhou Heng says he is a unique, one of a kind in this entire universe kind of Scheming Man. In that his 心機/Schemes are on his sleeves? He's transparent and romantic, and presumably the payoff is that his 心機 is being used to pursue/love someone rather than secretly harm them??
Basically, he's saying: Yes, I’m a schemer. But I’m a very special kind of schemer.
🙄
And it's working???
Lin Long – an evil adult – is married to her karma: a gigantic manchild. He won’t even help her retrieve a USB from under the couch because he’s busy playing his game (though she could have just asked Xu Chi… but then we wouldn’t get the dramatic scenes that follow!). So she shuts off the electricity. He gets furious, pushes her, she falls, her water breaks… and this man goes back to his room to play his game. Apparently, he is also blind. He cannot see the amniotic fluid on the floor or his wife in pain. I don’t even know where this man went in that house, because somehow he is absent from the ambulance, absent from the hospital, and Only shows up after it’s all over, with his first question being about the baby. Dead. She had a vaginal delivery of a stillborn baby.
Lin Long forgives him.
But.
Five minutes earlier. Just five minutes! Lin Long had already mobilized Xu Chi to set up a recording device to collect evidence. Later, her lawyer suggests waiting a few days until she’s had time to calm down. Lin Long: “I’ve never been clearer.”
After that catastrophic trauma, she rebounded fast. Women are scary LOL. Smart call, ofc.
The irony. At the beginning, Bu Tian Na is treating Xu Chi's heart-ache / injured pride over Ye Xin Zhi’s indirect rejection. By the end, Ye Xin Zhi is consoling Xu Chi over Bu Tian Na’s betrayal at work.
These two. Taking turns jabbing her heart and then consoling her about each other.

Love her squat.

Where's your squat, Mr. I'm Cool

Remarks
[First Impression (Ep1-4)]
Soundtrack, please calm down. The music is good, but it has more gravitas than the actors or characters are naturally generating. It tells me THIS IS INTENSE when I'm watching someone… walk. Kind of mismatch.
Then there are some tacky lines. The FL saying, “When we play chess, I don’t play the knight well. I only know how to play the queen.” From Zhao Jin Ma’s lips. Very convincing.

As for Wei Da Xun, if the goal was to recreate that gloomy/dark/restrained charisma from Fireworks of My Heart … sorry, man, it isn't showing, lol. If he’s simply meant to be the professional senior who randomly materializes everywhere to give FL advice, validation, and a little life wisdom, though, he’s doing fine. Kind of like a wallpaper at the moment. Loool.
The office side also isn’t exactly grounded. If you came looking for a realistic depiction of consulting work, this is not that. (Though why would you?)
But. I am seated.
Even though this is constantly insisting that everything is more intense, important, and professionally sophisticated than it actually feels on screen, the drama has this sismance!! xD. Hu Yi Xuan!
Also, as the episodes go on, I think the drama has tapped into its level of melodrama it needs to be fun. It may not always convince me that what I’m watching is as serious as the soundtrack thinks it is, but it is starting to convince me to keep watching.
A lot of comments are comparing this to Youku's previous drama, The Early Spring, but I think this is more them recognizing the potential of dramas like Love's Ambition.
From director Chen Ming Zhang, the man behind TWdrama hits Fated to Love You and The Prince Who Turns into a Frog. Then you look at Irreplaceable… a dramatic business-romance with scheming women… (And when he came over to Cdramas, he had My Boss and Live Your Life (Cai Wen Jing and Lin Yu Shen). Nowhere near his previous hits, but at least playing in the same romcom-sandbox. So I can see the lineage. But Irreplaceable...)
The screenplay is by Zhang Wei, whose resume includes A Dream of Splendour and A Journey to Love (🪦). Again, not the resume I would look at and predict “corporate business romance.”
