Truth be told, I resisted watching this series for so long. I like the four leads.
Yan Mo is very robotic, prickly and quiet. And way too literal.
Fei Da Chuan is a weird dude, and he's Yan Mo's uncle. (It's Yu Tu's colleague from You are My Glory who was shocked when Jing Jing showed up to their dinner! lol) His father is a cop, which explains his devil-may-care attitude. And I like how he's friends with the twins. He might look like he's a troublemaker but he's actually a good person. He's been team Yan Mo + Zhao Qiao Yi since day one. Aww, of course he falls for Cheng You Mei. It's hilarious when he starts really doting on her. And then he goes overboard. And when she is finally receptive, he's slow to understand. (I mean, he did take dating advice from Yan Mo!) I'm not a fan of how he unilaterally decided to change the material for Yan Mo's health band, and created a bigger mess. He's still too hotheaded, rash and immature.
Cheng You Mei is that annoying childhood friend with a crush on Yan Mo. She knows he likes Zhao Qiao Yi but still keeps telling everyone that's she's his fiancée. I do feel sorry for her though - she might have everything at her disposal (old money) but she wants something more meaningful - like pickles made with love. When she got excited that Fei Da Chuan brought some of the homemade pickled vegetables, it made me realize how lonely she must've felt. I’m glad that her story arc isn’t only focused on Yan Mo and that she’s not really a love rival for long.
E33 is one of my favorite episodes. There's so much heart in this ep, and it was lovely seeing Zhao Qiao Yi and Yan Mo working together towards one goal. Professor Li finally agreed to be their consultant. I appreciated the sense of community and history, and how Zhao Qiao Yi was the heart behind getting the food app moving forward. "Loving someone will change your fate.”
E35, Of course he would “propose” to her on their wedding day as a part of their vows! Wow, 9 years... I love the ending filled with time jump snippets.
I love the friendships. I actually enjoyed their high school days and then their progression into present timeline. And no, I don't buy any of the leads as high schoolers either but they are all so well-suited for their adult roles. They're not perfect - they're human with flaws.
I didn't mind the slow burn because it made their adulthood scenes more meaningful. There's something about Yan Mo's quietness and intellect that I found appealing. He's prickly, and his inability to emote openly (except for sour expression or smirk) is a bit off-putting. But I think it works well with Zhao Qiao Yi's openness, who wears her heart on her sleeve, and is gentle (her face tells the story) - she's perfect for him. This is the best role I've seen Zhang Yu Jian in. He has more depth here than in any other series I've seen him in.
I knew that the Behind the Scenes had to be fun, as Zhang Yu Jiang has to be so serious (yet absurd) 99% of the time. (They make a cute couple so it's awesome that they're together in real life. Hopefully with less bickering.)
Yan Mo is very robotic, prickly and quiet. And way too literal.
He's the only adult (kind of). Until he's drunk. (I just loved seeing the dichotomy.) Awww, when he dressed up for her in high school. (I don't like his mother.) That Tom & Jerry shirt cracked me up. His smile = devilish for her. I liked watching how his love for her progressed in the high school days. She just doesn't catch on when he's trying to help her. I do feel sorry for him because of his parents - they just leave him alone (except for the dog), and they're divorced (for 7 years) but hiding it from him and pretending to be together for holidays, birthdays, etc. He does some ridiculous things he'd never do, under normal circumstances, just to help Zhao Qiao Yi. I love how he sabotages her blind date (in Hao Wu Yi's stead). "Don't panic. Keep lying." When he thought she had a boyfriend, he was inconsolable (oh, those heart- wrenching sobs). Later, he gets her to say "I love you" in German (when she asked on how to say rascal), several times to him. (She was having a fit of jealousy over a German woman "flirting" with him at the car rental place.) Yan Mo, you're too clever sometimes. E27, Yan Mo's mother made me tear up - she loves him but she couldn't be there for him and regrets it. And they both only want the other to be happy in life. Yan Mo says some of most terse things to earn a scowl from Zhao Qiao Yi, but his actions are gentler and sweeter. His bark is worse than his bite. E29, he did the same thing to her as she did to him - pushed her away in hardship.
Zhao Qiao Yi. She's funny, kind, sweet and insecure. I like how she drew on his wrist instead of his face when he fell asleep. And he smiled when he saw it....and dropped it right after. (I don't like her father.) She deals with problems in her own way. When she pushed away Yan Mo though, I felt bad for both of them. She broke his heart when she rejected him and refused to see him one last time. She thought she was being selfless by letting him go by himself. So she gives up her dream job for him (her biggest dream) to follow him. E34, I like how she thinks hints will work with getting this man to propose to her. Hahaha. Of course this man's approach could be more romantic, but his style is to be direct - so he just suggests going to the marriage registration office while she's barely waking up in the morning. That woke her up completely! I love how she's apologizing (drunk) to her brother about getting married and how she used to love him the most. Hahaha
Yan Mo and Zhao Qiao Yi's relationship is ambiguous for a long time. Even after he confesses that she is his first love, she rejected him. She just kept pushing him away. She didn't want to be his burden and so she let him go. Those scenes in the UK broke my heart. They were so close to each other but didn't know it... until he saw her thank note and recognized her handwriting. Sold out Jay Chou concert tickets - this has to be a cdrama gag, right?? They each bought got a pair for the other to go with. Of course, Zhao Qiao Yi was quicker on the draw. E21, when they go to the concert but give their tickets to a teenager, and I loved how he calls her Qiao Ayi and she calls him Yan Shushu - it was funny to listen to. When he asks about her college boyfriend - turns out it was the dormmate's dog named boyfriend. He's so relieved and not quite as angry at her. E24, she finally tells him why she's even in Beijing - for him. He still needs to ask her if she likes him (yes) and since when (a long time ago). And just like that, they're together. It took 6 years for them to finally be together! (He's so happy that he couldn't sleep.) E25, when she asked for no favoritism, so he takes it literally. E28, he says he really loves her. Aww. E31, when she finds his old text messages to her that he never sent. He might not say as much to her but his heart's always been hers.
Zhao Guan Chao is so fun, smart, and a sweet brother. Just not into having a serious relationship. (Zhao Zhi Wei is good as a bad guy but I just love him more as a good guy. He's top notch here!) Oh wow, he really doesn't date this girl because she insults his sister! He may appear happy-go-lucky but he's carrying more weight than his sister realized regarding their biological father. He may tease her but he speaks of her with such love. He shields her from their biological father's vileness. He saved money for her to go to college. Aww, when he fights with Yan Mo because he thought Qiao Yi was pregnant. These two guys have some of the deepest conversations but are still wary of each other. And when he find out that it's Hao Wu Yi with his baby, he's responsible. He was so upset when he found out Hao Wu Yi wasn't pregnant but held back for some reason. He carries her to the bathroom for her burnt hand. Haha. Later, he finally admits that he's in love with her. And then her mother shows up. I love how she asks him questions and the real answer in his head is less appropriate than his polite response to her. He's so drunk from that lunch. Hahaha He stepped up to be there for Hao Qiao Yi when her mother was dying. And I love the twins' relationship, and how they're always there for each other.
Hao Wu Yi is the spunky best friend to Zhao Qiao Yi. Of course she ends up with a crush on the biggest flirt, Zhao Guan Chao, and they date for a bit. Then she finds out that was a bet with Fei Da Chuan. One drunk night leads to something else... I think they're good together. Poor Hao Wu Yi in dealing with her awful editor, but made a powerful enemy. She has such a complicated relationship with her mother, but her mother distanced herself until HWY felt insignificant. At least they made up before her death. I love her wedding gift to Zhao Wu Yi - brand name sneakers.
The twins' parents: I love how their mom met their stepfather. (He's such a kind man!) I love how the stepfather loves them as his own, such unconditional love. He loves his wife but he's always on the twins’ side. I love her stepfather so much - telling her to follow her heart for true love. I love how the stepfather is in good spirits even after his accident, and then stuck in a wheelchair. And he's much more observant than mom about Zhao Guan Chao and Hao Wu Yi (and anything really).
Fei Da Chuan is a weird dude, and he's Yan Mo's uncle. (It's Yu Tu's colleague from You are My Glory who was shocked when Jing Jing showed up to their dinner! lol) His father is a cop, which explains his devil-may-care attitude.
