Dark and a teeny bit sexy, but seriously
very campy. Why did I continue watching it? Well, I was just too curious from a single clip. (You know,
that one...lol)
Lee and Ruan Nian Chu met five years ago under strange circumstances. She'd gotten lost looking for props on a beach and ended up being caught by gang members. Lee saved her back then, and kept her by his side until she was able to escape and then he died in a boat explosion. Five years later, he suddenly shows up as Li Teng, a bodyguard.
Li Teng keeps to himself, is now the owner of a security expert firm, but still on a dangerous assignment. Five years ago, he died under the alias Lee. He was in a coma for three years after the incident, and had tried to see her after his recovery but work was still complicated. He loves Ruan Nian Chu(but won't tell her)but is involved in the operation against gangs.
Ruan Nian Chu is a theatre actress, smart, kind, and a badass. She's been missing Lee the entire time, and is shocked by his sudden reappearance and his new name. She's not happy with him for disappearing, for not telling her anything, and tries to shut him out. She becomes a target for gang retaliation, so Li Teng insists on being her bodyguard.
Their chemistry isn't the best but I enjoyed Li Teng's inner angst/conflict about Ruan Nian Chu. Once he realized it was hopeless for him to fight it, I appreciated how he kept pursuing her. But she's not a simpering fool.
Qiao Yu Fei is Ruan Nian Chu's best friend, a writer, a bit vapid at times but means well and gives hilarious dating advice to Ruan Nian Chu. She pursues Jiang Hao but he's quite resistant.
Jiang Hao is Li Teng's friend, right-hand man, soft-spoken and kind. He has a young daughter, Xing Xing, who gives Qiao Yu Fei a very hard time. Eventually, he tells Ruan Nian Chu that Li Teng waited five years for her, and three of those years were spent in a coma. He's my favorite character.
Wa Sha is the niece of a gang leader (top of the chain). She wanted Lee for herself but Ruan Nian Chu got in the way. She finds ways to get in between them, including putting Ruan Nian Chu on an active hitlist. (This actress is good at being conniving and you won't feel sorry for her.)
Oh, and there's a surprise bad guy. (It was so random.) The ending has too much going on, and it's bad enough that you can only laugh at it. Overall, it's just okay. I think it tried too hard to be dark but came out more silly than anything else. I watched this in between fully-fleshed out series and enjoyed for what it was - killing time.
(I originally had this set at 3/5 but realized that's way too generous, so it's been dropped to a 2.)
