Zhao Yuan Zhou (Hou Ming Hao) is an infamous, thousand++ years old monkey – correction – Ape. All monkey (hou) jokes are because he's Hou Ming Hao.
Zhuo Yi Chen (Tian Jia Rui) is a daemon hater hunter. He'd be dead if Zhao Yuan Zhou, a daemon, was serious about defeating him.
MLs have a history. Apparently Zhao Yuan Zhou killed Zhuo Yi Chen's clan. Now the "murderer" demands the victim to solve a new murder mystery together. Zhao Yuan Zhou is seriously looking for death.
Wen Xiao (Chen Du Ling) also has a history with Zhao Yuan Zhou but he's like gaslighting her that he isn't the masked daemon she met when her shifu died.
The ragtag team is gathered to solve their first case.
Member 1: Zhao Yuan Zhou, the Great "Devil" ✓. Joins because (per a Holy Voice) it's his last chance to redeem himself. He needs to find the Goddess of Baize's Token or else the evil daemons will bring chaos to the human realm.
Member 2: Zhuo Yi Chen, the sword-wielder ✓. Joins the squad because Zhao Yuan Zhou promises to teach Zhuo how to kill him (Zhao) with the Bright Cloud Sword.
Member 3: Wen Xiao, the Baize Goddess ✓. Joins because she has a heart of gold. It's her job apparently because she is the new goddess after her shifu, Zhao Wan Er, died. (These "goddesses" are human even if her title means White Marsh, a mythological creature). However, she's goddess in title only because she's powerless and token-less.
Member 4: Bai Jiu, the kiddo healer ✓. Joins because...it's fun? He's the screaming kid with too much blush on.
Member 5: Pei Si Jing, the archer ✓. Joins because she got called a dog? And well, Zhao Yuan Zhou offers to investigate her brother's death. I feel like Zhen Mei randomly spoke up for her or maybe I'm just fond of his role in My Journey to You. She's a depressed sister who had sworn off daemon-hunting after she killed her brother who became a daemon.
In summary, we have a team consisting of a suicidal ape, a powerless goddess, a jiejie suffering PTSD, and a kid who screams. Only 2ML is the most normal.
The team – sans Zhao Yuan Zhou – are duped into signing a death contract (by Lord Xiang's people). If they don't solve the case in 5 days, they will die.
Women are dangerous for Zhao Yuan Zhou. Wen Xiao "forced" him to sign a Titanic contract that if she dies, he dies. Then Pei Si Jing almost shot down his man-daemon-hood.
Men are dangerous for Zhou Yuan Zhou too. Li Lun wants to kill all of Zhao Yuan Zhou's friends, sounding very jealous that ZYZ has friends that aren't him. Li Lun muses if he should start killing from the Goddess of Baize again. So did this pellet-drumming man kill Wen Xiao'd shifu or not?
Li Lun really has a thing for Zhao Yuan Zhou. Li Lun thinks Wen Xiao is unworthy of standing next to Zhao Yuan Zhou. Then he thinks Lord Xiang's men don't deserve to kill Zhao Yuan Zhou. Make up your mind!

The first case (Wang Yi Lun & Peng Xiao Ran). Ran Yi and Lady Qi are star-crossed lovers. He's a Dream Daemon and she's a neglected human daughter. He's murdering brides to stop Father Qi from selling marrying off Lady Qi. I'm sure there's a less convoluted way to stop her from marrying.
Zhao Yuan Zhou knew Ran Yi was the murderer from the start. He promised to reunite the star-crossed lovers in exchange for Ran Yi's dream-powers to awaken Wen Xiao's hidden memories/dreams in order to locate the Token. I'm also sure there's a less convoluted way to make Wen Xiao dream, but where would we have a drama, right?
Suddenly Zhuo Yi Chen is attacked. Zhao Yuan Zhou protects him.
Zhuo Yi Chen is this old and tells his gege (Wang Duo) he can't sleep at night because of his bad dreams. Oh, boo.
Zhuo Yi Chen is scared of becoming a daemon, apparently. Why would he even have that thought?
RIP 2nd cameos. Lady Qi pathetically dies from being possessed too long by Li Lun. Ran Yi is killed by accident. Zhuo Yi Chen wanted to kill Li Lun who possessed Lady Qi's body, but Ran Yi blocked it.
Zhao Yuan Zhou is the masked daemon Wen Xiao knew. He's destined to be enemies with the goddess. Everything he will destroy is what the goddess will protect. However Zhao Wan Er, Wen Xiao's shifu, believed his fate (of death) can be changed in that he will want to live.
Half of the Baize Token is found – it's in Wen Xiao's forehead. Li Lun told her the answer and so what was the point of hiring Ran Yi to make Wen Xiao dream? Now Ran Yi and his lover died all for naught.

Zhao Yuan Zhou is Chen-du-ling-ing to Chen Du Ling Wen Xiao. He baits sympathy from Wen Xiao that if he dies, he'll turn into rain to accompany her. Nooooooo! Chen Du Ling produces enough water already.
Ying Lei, a mountain god, ditched his grandfather at Dahuang – the place where daemons live in peace and are in dire need of a functioning Goddess of Baize – to be a chef here. Big dreams! His special power is teleportation.
We spend 10 minutes on a swing, analyzing Trust and that we only reveal our backs to those we believe in. Y'all, it's a swing.
The second case. Cheng Huang (Cheng Lei), a daemon who can control puppets, manipulated Pei Si Jing's didi, Pei Si Heng, to turn himself into a daemon or more like an undead puppet. Pei Si Jing had to kill her possessed didi with her own arrow. Now this undead didi haunts her.
Oh Cheng Xiao, you're petty face, why do you lack so much emotion on it. Even if didi's face is disappearing in the light, there's pain in his smile.
Bai Jiu saves/wakes Pei Si Jing from Cheng Huang's deadly face temptation....by shaking the sundial until it worked. Who needs tech-support when you can intimidate the device with force.
Puppet didi also saves Pei Si Jing – puppet-dude got a conscious! He truly cares for his jiejie and only fell for Cheng Huang's temptations because he wanted to be stronger for Pei Si Jing so that she doesn't have to carry all the burdens.
Li Lun is here too. Man is clingy even without a body. He's the one who endowed Cheng Huang the sundial.
Poor ding Didi wants to touch jiejie's face just one last time, but jiejie's been holding his hand down. Rejected, lol.
The second side story (Cheng Lei & Nazha). Cheng Huang wants to undead his love, the Primordial Goddess of Baize. Did she die to save the world? To fight against evil? No. She died from plague, L-O-L. Well, she took her own life to end Cheng Huang's daemon-murder spree to treat her. She also stripped him of his Token and from then on,the Token was no longer in two.
Scam alert #1: The sundial cannot turn back time to when his goddess was still alive.
Scam alert #2: Cheng Huan isn't even alive to undead the dead. He is also a puppet.
The second half of the Token is found: it's inside Zhao Yuan Zhou. The complete Token activates and materializes into a flute that produces binding music, cuffing evil-daemon-doers. This is how Zhao Wan'er sealed Li Lun. Wen Xiao is no longer useless!
Not a scam: Pei Si Jing's dead didi is "alive" again. Zhao Yuan Zhou used the power of chaos to keep his soul/consciousness alive in a puppet. Now didi is like ChatGPT offering 24/7 support whenever jiejie needs it.
Pei Si Jing is a spy working for Zhen Mei (ofc, he's in charge of spies) who's working for Lord Xiang.

Fei begs the team to save her. In exchange he'll stop the plague, which is killing himself. Now he'll never get to know she cared about him. This story IS meant to be romantic and the only reason they say "friend" is because GJM got Ai Mi – underaged – to film this.... >_>.
Fei's death was UNNECESSARY. He thought it would end the plague; it did not. He didn't even need to die for the team to save Qing Geng >_>

FL Update #2: Wen Xiao, what a bestie, one minute she's hugging Pei Si Jing making her feeling belonged, and the next minute, she's calling her a spy. It's not that she's wrong about PSJ, but it's the sequence of her actions and emotions that make her two-faced.

During the yearly Blood Moon, Zhao Yuan Zhou gets major period cramps is consumed by his 戾氣 vicious currents and that's how he killed the innocent (e.g. Zhuo Yi Chen's clan). He's fine now because the Tampon Token soaks up the evil currents from bleeding into consciousness. However, the Token has to leave Zhao Yuan Zhou's body to restore Dahuang and tomorrow is the Blood Moon. So perform the ritual on another day?
The night before, Zhao Yuan Zhou taught Zhuo Yi Chen how to kill him with a tutorial of Bing Yi killing Ying Long with the Cloud Sword. However, Zhao Yuan Zhou no longer wants to die. Zhuo Yi Chen jealously asks if it's because of Wen Xiao.
Hello, it's Li Lun again. He pinches the team from both ends: 1) summoning walking-dead soldiers to attack Zhuo Yi Chen and Ying Lei (which hints at a betrayal from Bai Jiu because he had the scales to control the dead zombies) and 2) allying with Zhu Yin (mountain + dragon god). Zhu Yin's goal: free all daemons from Dahuang. He doesn't want peace with humans because he was betrayed by one human man (who the fell in love with?).
FL Update: Chaos is coming and there she's sitting.
When it looks like the villains have lost, Zhu Yin brings the Blood Moon ahead of schedule, making Zhao Yuan Zhou bleed red, ominous gas from his body.
Li Lun has a body now! He's freed because the Token is destroyed. Then he tells everyone that the bipolar Zhao Yuan Zhou killed everyone, including Wen Xiao's shifu. Li Lun's goal up until now was always to combine the Token in order to destroy the Token. A recap of what Li Lun has done: 1) control Ran Yi / Lady Qi to "kill" Zhao Yuan Zhou; 2) manipulate Cheng Huang to somehow activate the Token; 3) manipulate Qing Geng to manipulate Zhuo Yi Chen to kill Zhao Yuan Zhou. But only ONE thing he did makes sense, which is #2, but activating the token had nothing to do with him because ML and FL fell in love on their own..... Li Lun might need more than just a body.
Zhao Yuan Zhou's bipolar disorder can be suppressed by the Cloud Sword when it's enhanced by the blood of 3 species: god, daemon, and Bing Yi clan (= Ying Lei, Zhao Yuan Zhou, and Zhuo Yi Chen).

Zhuo Yi Chen strips Zhao Yuan Zhou's – back. He sees the never-healing-scars from his self-punishments. There's 8 for 8 years of Blood Moon. Softie Zhuo Yi Chen gives up killing Zhao Yuan Zhou – for now. He's stubborn and won't admit he (slightly) forgives him. He says Zhao Yuan Zhou must make up for his sins and kill Li Lun first. After an emotional death, the only heart-to-back-heart is between the ML and 2ML. It's not with the Fl of the drama nor is it with the grandson, Ying Lei, of the guy who died. This is clearly Guo Jing Ming's agenda to actively sideline the hetero-romance.
The Token broke. FL is useless again but she was never useful anyway. I'm typing this blind now because my eyes are stuck rolling. All the ingredients to fix the Token are at Li Lun's home. Wonderful.

The Holy Token needs Holy Wood that needs Holy Blood. A long time ago two great daemons – Zhao Yuan Zhou and Li Lun – used their power and blood to restore the Holy Wood and the Baidi Tower. But wait, Li Lun's face morphs into Zhuo Yi Chen. Is this a premonition? Dun dun dun.
So we do not have two great (sacrificial) daemons anymore. But there's Bai Jiu's half-god blood! The Holy Wood sprouts except it's just a bud. It'll need 300 years and we don't have 300 years for Hou Ming Hao to seduce himself. Or maybe we do?
FL Update: Wen Xiao finds a way to open 300 years – the sundial! And ofc her scenes are omitted (I'm a bit ahead and know that there will be flashbacks, but that greatly diminishes her impact).

All his descendants are therefore human. However, a Crystal preserves a drop of Bing Yi's daemon blood. Now this crystal broke inside Zhuo Yi Chen. Bing Yi's daemon blood will metastasize and become cancerous because Zhuo Yi Chen doesn't have a daemon core.
FL Update: Since Zhao Yuan Zhou stole her encyclopaedia job Wen Xiao has nothing to do other than cry about Zhuo Yi Chen.
Fact-check: Zhuo Yi Chen only has daemon cancer, not a gene mutation to a serial killer. The one killing humans is Ao Yin who's doing it to treat Li Lun's pain.
Zhuo Yi Chen can finally empathize with Zhao Yuan Zhou's bipolarity as he too cannot recall if he was a murderer or not. However, Zhuo Yi Chen will never sympathize with Li Lun.

The Token is restored and now Dahuang is saved.
Bai Jiu's mother, Bai Yan, is revived (and she doesn't ask about her son).
The Sword needs to be restored now. A Voice (supposedly Bing Yi since we're at Bing Yi Clan) agrees to repair the sword but on the condition that Zhuo Yi Chen leaves one teammate behind, frozen forever. Zhuo Yi Chen chooses himself.
Zhao Yuan Zhou sacrifices himself, breaks through ice and blizzard to stop Zhuo Yi Chen but now they're both frozen.
FL Update: Highly emotional scene, and where is she?! Back there, crying.

FL Update: Slapped by Pei Si Jing. It's out of love because Wen Xiao hates herself (welcome to the party, girl!) for being useless and wanted to commit suicide. Zhuo Yi Chen's parting present, being the Zhichu flowers, is also comforting her that the pain (the snow) won't always precipitate. Dude was always prepared – carrying a box this whole time! – to pre-console her about his "death", the way she comforted him about his clan's death.
The Voice approves the boys' sacrifice for each other. Why? Because he's the paragon of self-martyrdom = Ying Long. A long time ago, Ancestor Ying Long (Hou Ming Hao) asked Ancestor Bing Yi (Tian Jia Rui) to kill him for world peace. However, softhearted Bing Yi couldn't, and so Ying Long stabbed himself. Should have just done that himself and spared Bing Yi the guilt-trip. Afterwards, Ying Long transcended and became the galaxy and Bing Yi roamed the world with his Cloud Sword, protecting the world until he was granted his wish of becoming mortal. Bing Yi – being soft-hearted – also kept a vestigial flicker of Ying Long's soul, which allowed him to be The Voice.
Zhuo Yi Chen and Zhao Yuan Zhou (are like reincarnations) and have to proudly inherit the Noble Idiocy because it's the only right way. Zhao Yuan Zhou will have to die for this f*cking world and Zhuo Yi Chen will have to murder this man whom he loves#WorthIt.

Congratulations to Zhuo Yi Chen's sword. He acquired the scale. But wait – what's this. There's another last-minute condition to repair this sword and it requires the power from the Non-Burning Wood, which depletes Zhao Yuan Zhou's energy. Why does every magical relic repair feel like a pyramid scheme. It's done.
A sword through the heart is not deadly. Zhuo Yi Chen stabs Zhao Yuan Zhou for like 9028394 times already and this time it's to peel off the Non-Burning Wood within Zhao Yuan Zhou to trade Wen Zhong Yu for the antidote to save Wen Xiao (except there actually is no antidote).
Touching things is more deadly than anything else in this show. Wen Zhong Yu touched the Non-Burning Wood and dies.
The only "cure" is transferring the poison. And so Ao Yin dies to save Li Lun. She loves him. As a shapeshifter, she always hoped that at least Li Lun can remember her true form.
Zhao Yuan Zhou had a pair of True Eyes that can see through all of Li Lun's possessions, but he gave it to Li Lun so he would never be vulnerable to anyone. Zhao Yuan Zhou is always giving to make the boys feel secure around him (he gave ZYC finger immunity).
Li Lun wants another chance with Zhao Yuan Zhou and the only way, as Zhao Yuan Zhou replies, is if Li Lun leaves Bai Jiu's body. But that's killing Li Lun...and so the answer is actually no.
Ying Lei dies! It was to save the love of his life, Bai Jiu. Even in death, Ying Lei clutches tightly onto him.
Li Lun dies. But! Zhao Yuan Zhou ensured Li Lun can reincarnate –it'll just take +++ years. Y'all couldn't have told Li Lun sooner before Ying Lei was killed off eh.
Zhuo Yi Chen says he does love Wen Xiao, but there are different types of love. There's love where once you see it, you want to own it. Then there's love where it's so beautiful, you want it to be free. Bai Jiu still thinks he's talking about Wen Xiao, and here is where GJM is annoyingly clever. Zhuo Yi Chen can also be TOTALLY referring to Zhao Yuan Zhou instead of Wen Xiao.

Zhuo Yi Chen's ice collides with Wen Zhong Yu's hellfire. Fight, fight, fight! Wait, wait, wait...... We dream first. It looks like we're in Zhao Yuan Zhou's dream, but it seems to be Zhuo Yi Chen's instead.
If Zhuo Yi Chen kills himself in the dream, he will really die. This isn't like Ran Yi's magical dreams. This is Wen Zhong Yu's poison, which by the way has upgraded – from direct contact, it's now airborne.
Li Lun! Also known as Limitless Lives, btw. He quit his reincarnation to rescue Zhao Yuan Zhou and Zhuo Yi Chen. The consequence? He will die again – after he's done being useful that is – without ever reincarnating again. Oh ok, Limited Life now.
Qing Geng! She dies to save Zhuo Yi Chen. Technically, the reason Fei sacrificed was because Zhuo Yi Chen stabbed Qing Geng..... The last person she should die for is Zhuo Yi Chen methinks.
If Pei Si Jing kills herself in the dream, she actually wakes up. Don't you know the rules change per person? She conquered Zhen Mei, except her deaddidi dies.
Dying Zhen Mei has a moment with Bai Jiu. Necessary.
Li Lun is like a pig – every part can be consumed. The difference is he volunteered. First he strangles Zhuo Yi Chen, which is his way of transferring half his powers to him. The remaining half will be for Zhao Yuan Zhou, which is peacefully air-dropped.
Li Lun's ultimate sacrifice is his body. Since Li Lun's original form is Wood, he can exhaust Wen Zhong Yu's hellfire.
The big baddie Wen Zhong Yu waited for his enemies to finish transferring their powers and waited for Li Lun to set up the shield, then he launched his fireballs. Gentleman! LOL......
Wings?! Zhuo Yi Chen gets wings from Zhao Yuan Zhou's fingers.
Wen Zhong Yu is defeated!
No wait, Wen Zhong Yu is reviving.
Wen Zhong Yu takes Zhuo Yi Chen hostage behind a barrier. But that doesn't stop Zhuo Yi Chen from transferring his powers to Zhao Yuan Zhou. Wen Zhong Yu? He's waiting again. Pft. His hand on Zhuo Yi Chen's neck? It's his arm rest.
Bai Jiu to the rescue! He cuts off Wen Zhong Yu's revival-power-source. It's why Bai Jiu retreated with the bells from Zhuo Yi Chen. Holding them gives him courage to die for the greater good.
Wen Zhong Yu: Oopsies, gotta look away. This is Zhuo Yi Chen's solo shot.
FL Update: How is Wen Xiao still being strangled. Anyway, her tears can cure the demonic-pandemic (but her stepdad commits suicide too fast). She plans to sacrifice herself, expend her powers to turn to rain and cure everyone.
Zhao Yuan Zhou illogically explains how he is the better sacrifice. Since the Baize powers are cyclical with the demonic currents, the stronger he is, the stronger she is. And so naturally killing himself will weaken...... "strengthen" Wen Xiao's powers. ???? Like you're telling me if you get rid of the egg, the chicken will be stronger? If you kill the egg, how am I going to get a chicken??
Why is the finger immunity so fickle? It isn't. Zhuo Yi Chen is immune. It only worked (for the wings) because his powers mistook Zhuo Yi Chen as Li Lun after the power transfer.
Zhao Yuan Zhou wants Zhuo Yi Chen to have the deed done now. Zhao teases him to not miss the spot this time. Just when Zhao thought Zhuo couldn't do it, Zhuo thrusts with full force. Zhuo Yi Chen did it so that Zhao Yuan Zhou won't have to be like Ying Long who did everything himself.
All this sacrifice was totally worth it: humans have learned not to be racist.
When Zhuo Yi Chen killed Zhao Yuan Zhou, he tried to peel a bit of his primordial spirit to allow him to live. Zhuo Yi Chen doesn't know where his vestigial flicker of soul went but it will be his life's mission to find Zhao Yuan Zhou.
Wen Xiao will seclude herself at Dahuang to fulfill Zhao Yuan Zhou's regret, which was never having his own dwelling. My gurl, there's a chance your hubby is alive, and you're going to sit at home?
Pei Si Jing is a mentor, training a lot of didis. Very Cheng Xiao.

Don't be too shocked! Zhao Yuan Zhou is alive. His vestigial soul is in the blood contract he signed with Wen Xiao, which she just left lying around. The wind carries the contract to Zhao Yuan Zhou's real fate: Zhuo Yi Chen.

It's my second attempt at starting this and it's better than my first because I’ve learned to tune out what doesn't work for me:
Every other line because it's all jokes that aren't funny. The real crime isn't being unfunny though, it's how they kill the tension every time. By ignoring half the show it, I can better imagine there's some emotional depth or seriousness in here.
The constant BGM and all the singing, especially when they stretch out the piteous scenes.
The dead way everyone talks in – pushing down their vocal chords to hiss out every word. The kiddo might be an exception, but they made him scream...

Basically I tune out everything, lol. Why am I here then? Because I'm the dumb. I just want to strip away every gimmick Guo Jing Ming used to "enhance the drama" and get to the bare crux of his story – a narrative that is deliberately discombobulating until he decides it's time to combobulate.

[Review & Rating]
This is either emotional with bittersweet brilliance or excessively baiting and boring. I think you win if you enjoy BL – there’s lots to dissect. My hormones just don’t react so I would rely on the broader story, which Guo Jing Ming both elevates and undermines.
Guo Jing Ming – Masterful, yet frustrating. This is a BL ingeniously cloaked, deftly slipping right past censorship. The FL functions as a beard for the lavender romance simmering between Hou Ming Hao and Tian Jia Rui’s characters. Chen Du Ling’s character, though labeled as a goddess, is a goddess in name only, much like she is a FL in title alone. If her butt isn’t planted on the ground, then she’s an upright burden.
Guo Jing Ming – Saboteur of his own brilliance. The murder mystery opening? Dead on arrival. Starting with the weakest element does the story no favours. The overarching plot, while needlessly convoluted, occasionally surprises with twists that land. Until it doesn’t. But I’m actually still impressed that certain complications resolve coherently – I’ll give Guo Jing Ming that. The OST is beautiful, but painfully overplayed. It never stops. Emotional scenes are undercut by misplaced, unfunny humor. The cast repetitively displays grief with one eye…There's too much camera-awareness – characters are looking more at the camera than at each other. Guo Jing Ming is too excessive for me here, otherwise I do love his gothic spook + ballad vibes.
Guo Jing Ming – Manipulative. Every line in this review is my opinion and this section especially so: I thought Hou Ming Hao was oblivious to the degree of BL permeating the script. He’s dutifully promoting his CP with Chen Du Ling, while Guo Jing Ming is busy firing on all BL cylinders during production. Moreover, the story’s emotional core belongs more to Tian Jia Rui (“2ML”). His character has the most compelling arc, evolving from hatred to forgiveness to love. He grows stronger with every step, ultimately becoming the most powerful character who stands equal to the ML. Meanwhile, the FL is perpetually sidelined, and the ML’s immense power comes without significant personal growth. It’s like Hou Ming Hao and Chen Du Ling were consigned to a stagnant script devoid of relational or personal development, while Tian Jia Rui secretly received the layered (BL) narrative. Guo Jing Ming crafting this dual-layered storytelling is actually so impressive and so underhanded. It’s unsettling.
Overall. I wasn’t watching for entertainment. I was practicing my endurance. I admit it was a bad cardio decision but I wanted to see how Guo Jing Ming veiled the BL and marginalized the FL.
