- 1993. At the hospital, a doctor’s daughter ends up getting her throat slashed by an angry grieving man who just lost his wife and unborn child.
- 2023. Kim Myeong-joon kidnaps Choi Ro-hee, who eventually wakes up and appears to have lost her memories. So he says that he’s her appa.
- Ro-hee is able to speak multiple languages and quite observant. She also wants real food – none of this junk food he keeps trying to feed her. She feels quite comforted by this handy backscratcher.
- Myeong-joon has a real-life daughter, Kim Hee-ae who is currently in the hospital as a leukemia patient and will require some very expensive surgery.
- Myeong-joon wonders why Ro-hee’s real parents haven’t been answering his calls or asked for her return. He then finds out that the cops have discovered that they were murdered in their home. But who did it?
- Myeong-joon sets his car on fire to quickly get rid of it.
- A creepy junk man tries to kidnap Ro-hee but she’s miraculously saved by Myeong-joon.
- Hee-ae’s surgery has suddenly been paid in full, so she's scheduled for surgery on June 5th. But if Myeong-joon didn’t pay for this, who did?
- Ro-hee eats at a restaurant while he leaves to make a call. When he returns, he finds her passed out. He frantically tries to wake her up by her real name. He carries her on his back all the way to the hospital.
- She has a shrimp allergy. The medical staff have also reported him for child abuse as they noticed the multiple bruises all over her arms.
- When the two realizes this, she pulls him by the hand and they run out of there.
- Outside, Ro-hee angrily walks away from Myeong-joon who finally yells out her real name.
- He confesses the truth about who his real daughter is and what's happened.
- Myeong-joon sets her free and then leaves to turn himself in at the police station.
- But when she sees the red and blue flashing lights of an approaching police car, she starts remembering bits of flashing lights from that night. Frightened, she backs away from the vehicle and bumps into an officer.
- After a merry chase, this officer finally manages to reunite her with her “appa.”
- Once the officer leaves, she then beats Myeong-joon and forces him sign a contract agreeing to help her find out what happened that night. ใ ใ ใ She also wants to meet his estranged wife, Seo Hye-eun, who he has been desperately trying to reach for days. So now they're back on the run.
- The police have discovered that Hee-ae's 50M won hospital bill was paid with cash.
- Detective Park Sang-yoon makes the kidnapping and murder cases go public along with the fact that Myeong-joon has a criminal history… for murder?!
- He had accidentally killed another athlete during a judo match. His nickname at the time was "The Monster."
- Myeong-joon and Ro-hee show up at his estranged wife's place. She later tells him that she had left them to spare Hee-ae from the humiliation of having an HIV patient parent.
- Even though Hye-eun was the mastermind, Myeong-joon plans to take full responsibility for Ro-hee’s kidnapping. When that time comes, he wants Hye-eun to take care of their daughter.
- Ro-hee is the product of Dr. Choi, her father's Genius Child Project. Those bruises on her arms came from the various needle injections.
- The security guy, Park Cheol-won has a secret stash of hard drives.
- While sniffing some flowers, she suddenly remembers her mother but a mysterious man drugs her and whisks her away.
- At the same time, the cops arrive to arrest Myeong-joon. But he desperately runs away from them to save Ro-hee.
- After succumbing to his injuries, the two are picked up by the mysterious man… and later wake up in a mansion.
- Ro-hee has a friend in this mansion: Dr. Mo Eun-sun.
- Dr. Choi, Sr. had a daughter before he had a son, Ro-hee's father.
- The man who harmed Dr. Choi’s daughter was Park Cheol-won. And the formerly adopted and then disowned daughter is none other than… Seo Hye-eun!
- Myeong-joon takes Ro-hee to do something she's never done before – play at the beach.
- Later, he's taken by boat, to be
smuggled out of the countrykilled. So he tries to bribe the driver to keep him alive. Instead several men arrive and he gets knocked out. - Ro-hee attempts to leave the compound but is stopped by a slick-talking man in a suit.
- Slick-talking man is Jaden Cho from X Capital is very interested in acquiring Ro-hee.
- The henchmen chase after her but Dr. Mo intervenes before any harm comes to her. She takes her back inside. Ro-hee is much more concerned about Myeong-joon’s whereabouts.
- While the others are busy
fightingkilling each other over money, Myeong-joon finally wakes up and orders the now-frightened driver take him back. - The second he arrives back on land, he's instantly handcuffed by Sang-yoon and Chae Jung-man.
- On their drive to jail, they get T-boned by Ho-young [mysterious man aka X Capital's fixer] who retrieves Myeong-joon. An injured Sang-yoon goes after them and the two men fight until Myeong-joon points a gun at Ho-young and orders him to stop as he just wants to return to Ro-hee's side.
- Cheol-won quietly resigns from his job and then brutally murders Dr. Yoon Jeong-do at a restaurant. Later, he confesses to also killing Dr. Choi.
- Ro-hee’s great-uncle wants the world to think that Ro-hee is dead.
- She orders Myeong-joon to call Attorney Choi Taek-hyun and make a ransom demand as it’s one of the key things he never did as the kidnapper. Not cut out to be one!
- Myeong-joon cluelessly tries to negotiate the ransom terms. Of course he does its so poorly that Ro-hee takes over the call: tell her great-uncle to pay up the 30B won or she’ll tell the world she’s alive. Also, let them know that the caller was a woman.
- Sang-yoon interviews Hye-eun about her former relationship with the late Dr. Choi Sr. Three years ago, she went to his funeral and happened to run into Cheol-won.
- Myeong-joon gets beaten up by Jaden after Ho-young discovers the secret phone in the basement.
- Dr. Mo is very invested in this project and Ro-hee’s survival because of her developmentally-delayed daughter.
- As ordered, 30B won gets dropped off at various trash sites and a garbage truck driver picks them and loads them into his truck.
- The henchmen detains the driver right before the last pick-up location – it’s Sang-yoon (and his team) who arrests Ho-young and his crew.
- Jaden holds Attorney Choi and Dr. Mo at gunpoint as he suspected that they were the accomplices behind the ransom demand.
- Myeong-joon shoots at
JacksonJaden. ใ ใ ใ ใ He refuses to remember his name. Ro-hee gives the other gun to Attorney Choi. Jaden is finally tied up and forced into their car's trunk. ๐ - Sang-yoon and his team are unexpectedly taken off the kidnapping case.
- Attorney Choi gets stabbed by Ho-young, and then Ro-hee gets drugged and kidnapped again.
- Hee-ae’s surgery goes well but an injured Myeong-joon instead shows up at Hye-eun's place.
- Sang-yoon finds Drs. Choi Jr. and Sr's journals and has a forensicist analyze their contents. There was a first child, before Seo Hye-eun – it was Kim Myeong-joon as they're from the same orphanage.
- At Hye-eun’s, Myeong-joon finds the hard drive with CCTV footage from Dr. Choi’s.
- Flashback. When Dr. Choi Sr. had adopted Myeong-joon, Hye-eun had snuck into the car trunk, and then pitifully begged to be part of this new family.
- Sang-yoon gets placed on suspension.
- Hye-eun visits Cheol-won at the prison. When she realizes that their conversation is being recorded, she goes from cunning and threatening to pitifully crying. Scary quick change.
- Thinking it's the key to everything, Jaden snatches Ro-hee’s necklace from her neck.
- Ro-hee who has been refusing to sleep or eat, suddenly makes a request for shrimp fried rice. <.<
- Hye-eun shows Jaden the footage of Dr. Choi’s experiments on Ro-hee. She also shows him the memory chip that was inside Ro-hee’s pendant.
- Ho-young has to take Ro-hee to the emergency room as she starts foaming at the mouth. When he leaves her alone for a minute, she opens her eyes and hightails it out of there.
- Sang-yoon finally catches Myeong-joon who tells him that Jaden is trying to smuggle Ro-hee out of the country.
- In exchange for 10M won, Hye-eun gives the recording of Dr. Choi’s research and the key (from Ro-hee's necklace) which contains all of Dr’s Choi’s research materials to Jaden.
- Myeong-joon and Sang-yoon arrive to save Ro-hee from being caught again by Ho-young (who gets arrested).
- Afterwards, Ro-hee wants Sang-yoon to promise to not arrest Myeong-joon just yet as she wants to find him proper counsel.
- A post-op Hee-ae finally wakes up but Hye-eun is nowhere to be found as she's too busy spending her 10M. Terrible "mother".
- Jaden finds out that the key is encrypted to only work with its own laptop... which Hye-eun doesn't have. Pay to play.
- He later poisons Ho-young and shoots him before dumping his body into a pool.
- Hye-eun wants what once hers to remain forever hers: Choi family name, money, etc.
- Sang-yoon keeps Ro-hee safe at his home. Later when Myeong-joon joins them, she chides him for forgetting to get her requested bulgogi burger.
- Jung-man grumpily brings them four burgers. However, he's so shocked at the sight of Myeong-joon and Ro-hee that he instinctually pulls out and points his gun on Myeong-joon! The latter raises his hands but Ro-hee orders him to put down his arms. And then he has to listen to Myeong-joon fuss over how she's eating her burger. He's amused that the kidnapper is worried about his victim. Ro-hee gripes about how long she'll have to listen to his nagging. ใ ใ ใ ใ
- They later take her back to the Choi compound as she wants to see about recovering her missing memory from May 20th (her father's murder). She realizes that she needs her necklace back, and that Jaden should be charged with theft.
- Poor Jung-man has to deal with Ro-hee's criticism as he didn't get her the right sauce on her sandwich.ใ ใ
- Later, Myeong-joon brings Ro-hee with him to visit Hee-ae at the hospital. His daughter takes an instant liking to Ro-hee.
- Sang-yoon and Myeong-joon both get arrested. Ro-hee becomes truly inconsolable as Myeong-joon torn from her side. She cries that he’s the first person to truly care and worry about her well-being – if she ate, slept, was well or upset, etc. – most importantly, didn't want or expect anything from her. Our broken family. T^T
