Drama Overview & Review

[Drama Info]

Starring two little piggies 🐷, Both MLs are the same age (1995).

A bit of a field day for drama fans. Rumours had this pegged for a June 10 airdrop. Instead, the cast showed up for a livestream without mentioning an air date. Even some of the sponsors seemed confused. (My guess is that the drama's potential BL undertones may have made the road to broadcast a little bumpier than expected.) But they managed to scramble to land a June 11 airdrop.

The drama is directed by Zhou Jing Tao, whose resume includes A Journey to LoveFight for Love, Guardian, etc. This time, he's tackling a Republican-era mystery adventure set within the tomb-raiding universe.

Xu Lei (Nan Pai San Shu), author of The Grave Robbers' Chronicles (盜墓筆記), also serves as the screenwriter. This is one of the franchise's prequel stories long before Wu Xie's generation (the original ML in the Chronicles). You will actually get cameos from Wu Xie / Xu Zhen Xuan and Zhang Qi Ling / Cheng Xiang

The Grave Robbers' Chronicles' dramas listed in book order (Year, Wu Xie, Zhang Qi Ling):

1Time Raiders movie
2The Lost Tomb 1 盜墓筆記
3The Lost Tomb 2 盜墓筆記 II
4Heavenly Palace in the Clouds 雲頂天宮
(2021, Bai Shu, Zhao Dong Ze)
5Ultimate Note
(2020, Zeng Shun Xi, Xiao Yu Liang)
6Adventures Behind the Bronze Door
7Tomb of the Sea 沙海
(2018, Qin Hao, Xiang Yu Liang cameo)
8Reunion: The Sound of Providence

Prequels
(2025, an unrelated pre-prequel)
It mentions an ancestor and "guixi".
→ The Mystic Nine
(2016,  a stand-alone prequel)
→ Archives: The Nanyang Mystery

Wrapped filming on April 17, 2025.

[Ending

Sad

☙ ☙ ☙ ☙ ☙

Bromance between Zhang Xin Cheng and Ding Yu Xi. No chemistry. Their matching outfits left a bigger impression than their relationship. I may have laughed at the coordinated wardrobe more than the actual jokes. [Top | Skip »]
The one scene of them hugging (in the barrels) is blurred xD
Salty Bride and Shrimpy Groom

Just Zhang Xin Cheng

Just Ding Yu Xi
☙ ☙ ☙ ☙ ☙

Jiang Pei Yao's Zhang Hai Qi. A true-blooded Zhang member. She has a lot more screentime than I thought. And she is actually valuable to the story. I am happy for her. [Top | Skip »]
Just lounging with a skeleton in a coffin

Other Characters. Forgettable. Time Raiders' Zhang Qi Ling and Wu Xie will cameo closer to the end. Don't expect much. There's also Mystic Nine characters (acted by Ji Xiao BingHan Dong, etc). Don't expect much there either. [Top | Skip »]

Master Xie Jiu

Zhang Qi Shan (William Chan's character)

Liu Ling Zi
Zhang Zhen Xiao
Fu Da Long, the big bad villain..
...all squeak, no threat.

Ending CliffsNotes. A sad ending. [Top | Skip »]

TL;DR
  • Salty / Zhang Hai Lou = causes the disaster (plot engine)
  • Shrimpy / Zhang Hai Xia = suffers and pays for everything he did not cause (tragedy core)
  • Shifu / Zhang Hai Qi = has the solutions but repeatedly allows Salty to take charge
Shifu originally values Shrimpy more and sends Salty into a dangerous zone expecting him to die in a mission.

But loyal and loving Shrimpy follows Salty. And in protecting Salty, Shrimpy becomes crippled and is infected with a parasitic worm, which splits his identity into a second personality = Dark Shrimp. Dun dun dun.

Dark Shrimpy's world domination plan is releasing parasites (that infected him), triggering a global epidemic of Dark Everyone.

Supposed villain Mu Yun Gao appears intermittently to cackle and squeak here and there.

Conclusion:
– Mu Yun Gao is killed by Shrimpy (stabbing).
– Dark Shrimp also kills Shifu (stabbing).
– Salty kills Shrimpy (double stabbing)
Why even give them supernatural abilities? Just keep close-range stabbing y'all
– Twist: Shifu is revived! Thanks to Zhang Qi Ling and the fact that she is true blooded Zhang.

This has to be this way because Zhang Hai Qi and Zhang Hai Lou still exist in other Wu Xie stories. Zhang Hai Xia does not.

Low quality.

But I still had some fun watching it. Not because the drama was good, but because there is a certain entertainment value in wondering whether it could possibly get worse. That only goes so far, but it was enough to keep me watching. Part of finishing it was also because I like these three actors, and since I've only recently started exploring the Tomb Raider universe, I might as well keep collecting the newer adaptations.

I have now witnessed how bad Xu Lei is at scripting his own stories. Paired with a director who struggles to connect Point A to Point B in an engaging way, the result is a particularly unfortunate combination. One fails to tell the story coherently, while the other fails to present it coherently. The plot lands from event to event without a sense of continuity. It’s like now-we-are-here.

What makes this especially disappointing is that the action should have been one of the drama's strengths. The story literally revolves around genetically enhanced superhumans with special abilities, but the fight scenes are shot too closely and edited too quickly to appreciate what is even happening.

Zhang Xin Cheng's Hai Lou unquestionably deserves first billing. He is connected to every single character and sits at the center of the narrative. Unfortunately, he does not benefit from that. He has no chemistry or synergy with anyone. He is supposed to be funny in nearly all his scenes, but he is not. Neither is he particularly interesting, which makes his overwhelming amount of screen time feel increasingly burdensome. Yea. I found Zhang Xin Cheng burdensome. Then there is his character. He creates all the disaster. Yet the one paying all the price is someone else – Ding Yu Xi’s character. Am I even supposed to like Zhang Xin Cheng and his character.

Ding Yu Xi actually benefits from having less screen time. Less to judge on. And plus, he’s the one suffering so you’re naturally more curious about his character.

One pleasant surprise was Jiang Pei Yao. I expected her role to be relatively small, but she ended up with more screen time than second-billed Ding Yu Xi. Her Zhang Hai Qi scenes were consistently some of the most engaging material in the drama, and I was genuinely delighted by how much she ended up contributing.

This had all the pieces.
