Lin Li (Zhang Xue Ying) is a drama project coordinator. For a solid year, she poured her soul into a S+ tier drama, only to meet a ML actor whose ego was larger than the production budget. He plays the big card (耍大牌), constantly pushing filming dates as if the world revolves around him. Then comes the inevitable: His House Collapses塌房了! It means A massive scandal broke, and his idol image implodes overnight, and suddenly, everyone is scrambling to shred their contracts with him. Now, the S+ drama is scrapped and her year of work has evaporated. Then a final blow: her (maternal) grandma was hospitalized. But has recovered. But still. That is the sign. Lin Li packs her bags, leaves Hengdian, and retreats to her hometown, Huangsha Island (黃沙島)
Oh Hengdian. They mistranslated 你這是在為難本宮 to "You are embarrassing me." It should be "You are putting me in a bind." Classic. I guess they did end up embarrassing themselves with the mistake printed on the studio wall lol.
I like her car sticker. "This goddess only cares about what's in front of her, not what's behind. Keep a safe distance." Chinese is excellent at their own language

Director Gu Yuan (Gao Zhi Ting) is on the island to scout locations for his movie. When he looks at Lin Li’s photos of the local scenery, he sighs. "The ocean here... it’s different from the ocean I imagined". My dude. It's salt water
Gu Yuan tries to explain his "vision." He wants to capture the "floating consciousness of contemporary people."

Lin Li: ??? (Consciousness floating, check)
The vibe is "more lonely than lonely," and "more poetic than poetry." He looks at her, searching for a kindred artistic soul, and asks: "Do you get what I mean?"

Lin Li: ???????
Ya.

[Ep2[Jump to: Top | CastComments]
Lin Li is an expert at planning and Gu Yuan is an expert at dismantling it. Not only does he ignore her safety warnings about dangerous terrain, but he commits a modern sin: he leaves her guesthouse an insulting 3-star review. To Gu Yuan though, 3 is a "solid pass." He rates like me xD But his written feedback is definitely a 2: "Comfortable, but nothing stands out."

Lin Li is a seasoned industry veteran. She processes her rage, and marches to his room to deliver the most terrifying weapon in her arsenal: The Full 90-Degree Bow. I think Zhang Xue Ying acts this vibe well enough: "I am being professional because I am currently choosing not to kill you." xD.

Lin Li pivots back to reality about the rock he's searching for and suggests, "Let's not 较劲 – wrestle / pick a fight / be stubborn – with the rock." They can scout for other locations first. But Gu Yuan is firm like a rock about his rock: "I only want the rock. If I can't find it, I’d rather not film at all." Breathe Lin Li! xD

Love budding:
Lin Li needs to move her car, but she's seen enough of Gu Yuan ignoring safety to know that his word isn’t trustworthy. She doubles back, making him pinky swear that he won’t set foot inside the structurally unstable house. It’s a childish gesture that he finds cute.
The moment Lin Li returns, Gu Yuan is nowhere to be found – and then the house collapses (an actual collapse, not a celebrity's image). Lin Li's instinct is to lunge toward the wreckage. But she’s stopped in her tracks by Gu Yuan, who calls her reckless. Is he really the kind of guy who would go back on his words and risk his life to scout for a scenery? Ya

[Ep4[Jump to: Top | CastComments]
Enter Wei Chen as Chen ge. He's the director of the Culture Centre, showing Lin Li and Gu Yuan around. He teases them with a knowing smirk, admitting that he was once just like them – returning from the city to follow his girlfriend back home. Lin Li insists her and Gu Yuan are strictly professional. Chen ge doesn't argue. He just nods like he knows it all. Smirks.

[Ep5[Jump to: Top | CastComments]

The air between Lin Li and Gu Yuan is starting to change. As they search for the rock. Don't miss the scenery for a rock!

[Ep6[Jump to: Top | CastComments]
Enter Nie Yuan as Gu Xing Zhi (Gu Yuan's father, a lawyer). He carries the scars of a "house collapse" of his own: years ago, his wife left the family to pursue her dreams abroad, leaving him to pick up the pieces. This is why he's against his son’s cinematic ambitions. To him, "artistic dreams" are just things that tear families apart.

When Lin Li meets Father Gu, she tells him that Gu Yuan isn’t just filming for his mother’s sake, but as a tribute to the father who always supported him. Is this not emotional manipulation from our expert coordinator? xD We’ve only seen Gu Yuan obsess over his mother’s memory. Not his dad's, lol.

And so the dad supports the drama! Aw. Emotionally manipulated! Gu Yuan was prepared to sell his house to fund the production. But dad left him a letter: "Don’t sell your house. When you’re tired, you need a place to rest." He gives him the money he had originally saved for his son's future wife. The password to the card is his mother's birthday. Aww. And if that's still not enough, the dad will find a way. Awww! And hey, technically, that "Wife Fund" is still being put to good use because this movie is exactly what’s bringing our CP together.

Action! Filming successfully begins. Rock or no rock.

[Ep7[Jump to: Top | CastComments]

The movie Gu Yuan is filming – starring Yu Ji Wei, ML of Ancient Detective – is the very drama we're watching lol.  They just refilmed the same senes with two new actors xD.
As the project wraps, and Gu Yuan's "Contemporary People’s Floating Consciousness" has finally found its form, Gu Yuan invites Lin Li to watch the final credits. It's a collection of clips of her. She was his muse, the grounded anchor to his floating thoughts. With their professional contract finished, Gu Yuan confesses: "I’m telling you very seriously/genuinely – I like you."

[Ep8[Jump to: Top | CastComments]

But Lin Li, ever the realist, rejects Gu Yuan's confession. She's not ready to start a long distance relationship (she has to return to Hengdian (in Zhejiang) and he has post-production in Beijing. Gu Yuan respects her space.

The Rock is solved! Lin Li finds an old photo of her with the rock. Her grandma recalls a young Lin Li crying, only to be comforted by a "graceful lady" who snapped a photo of her in front of that very rock. That had to be Gu Yuan’s mother

One year later. The drama is a hit, and Lin Li's guesthouse is booming with fans and tourists. And then, he appears. Gu Yuan is back.

Lin Li congratulates Gu Yuan's success. But he reiterates the movie is theirs. "So, congratulations to you, too." Partner in work. Partner in life.
The end.

Remarks

[First Impression

Produced by Zhejiang to promote Zhejiang (e.g. Hengdian and Huangsha Island 黃沙島). It's only 8 episodes, 20 minutes each. This is simple and chill. FL goes back to her hometown island because she finds that work sucks, and tada – she finds that love rocks here. And actually, she never stops working as a drama coordinator anyway.

[Cast&Crew]

I enjoyed the tiny cameo from Wei Chen (Ep4), who was also rather awkward xD

[Ending]

Happy.

[A Highlight

A rock being a major part of the story.

[Review & Rating
I’m taking a page out of the ML’s book and rating this exactly like he rated the guesthouse: "Comfortable, but nothing stands out." (Ep2) xD.

This actually aims for cozy, low-stakes reality while being meta about the drama industry. I liked this vibe. If the cinematography of the seaside had been truly breathtaking, I might have boosted this to a solid 3. For a story that doubles as an island tourism ad, it really needed the stunning visuals instead of the ocean looking like... ocean – as ML so eloquently complained in Ep1 lol.

Rating: 2/5 (It doesn't stand out, but it's a comfort watch. Sometimes you just want romance regardless of remarkableness.)
