Introduction

Just when Liu Yan turns 13 years old, Liu Yan was abandoned by her mother, Jiang Fang, a head chef. Now 25 turning 26, Liu Yan is a professional boxer...and a full-time pushover. She cooks, cleans, and silently endures the insults of her teammates, all for a real shot at competing. But even then, she’s denied a fair chance in the ring. Then everything changes when she receives a letter from a lawyer about her mother... dun dun dun!

The story takes place in Jiaya, a fictional country where both Cantonese and Mandarin are spoken. You'll hear plenty of authentic Cantonese from actual native speakers (and they'll speak bad canto-mando = bad-mando).

Mini Recaps

Not full recaps. Just my 3-5 highlights per ep

[Ep1[Jump to: Top | Comments]
  1. Meet our FL Liu Yan: a professional boxer with a passion for cooking. Her love of food might be genetic: her mother was once a head chef. She's also the one who nicknamed her 'Xian jie' (Salty jie) because the Yan 鹽 in Liu Yan literally means salt.
  1. Wang Yang isn’t the ML, but I love the support he gives Liu Yan. When she's fired with nowhere to go, he takes her in without hesitation. He promises her, “只要我有一口饭吃,就有你的一口” – As long as I have a bite of rice, so will you.
  1. Thirteen years have passed since Liu Yan was abandoned by her mother at age thirteen. Then, unexpectedly, a lawyer contacts her with news: her mother is dead. Along with the shock comes an inheritance. Sweet! But Liu Yan doesn’t want money; she just wants her mom. Imbecile

[Ep2[Jump to: Top | Comments]
  1. Song Yan Fei (as Tang Shuang Shuang) speaks Korean a little too well. I can’t speak to the accuracy, but it sounds natural enough that I wouldn't be surprised if she’s a fellow K-drama binge-watcher too xD. And in that scene with the “multilingual” taxi driver, the Chinese subs claim he’s asking, “Are you Korean?”in Korean. As someone who also wasted too many hours on Kdramas, I’m pretty sure What he actually says is, “Do you know Blackpink?”
  1. As for the inheritance? L.M.A.O. Liu Yan gets called in by a Very Suspicious Lawyer who hands her a contract entirely in English. Naturally, she signs it. Congratulations! She has inherited… her mother’s debt. Brilliant.
  1. And then she digs up a grave. Because obviously, the next step after losing your mom is to get drunk and go dig up her grave because you miss her (and don't realize she left you a debt). But um, wrong grave. HAHA. Liu Yan unearths someone else’s mother—specifically, a hotel CEO’s. RIP to that woman again XD. And now she's detained for emotional misdigging.

And that’s still not the twist.

  1. The mom might not even be dead. And that sketchy lawyer? That's Liu Yan's stepbrother, Li Zan, whom she meets for the first time today. He’s played by Wu Jia Kai, who I know, but found unrecognizable even though it should have been incredibly obvious under that fake moustache ^^".
  1. Enter ML Liu Tian Chi, who jumps at the grave-digging case thinking Liu Yan's rich. He's an elite in his field – like bribing the officers, telling her to act insane for sympathy, etc. Now he can’t even get back the money he spent on bribes. No wonder this isn’t set in China.

[Ep3[Jump to: Top | Comments]
  1. Liu Yan kidnaps her high school stepbrother (yes, kidnaps, like ropes him up and drags him across asphalt) for scamming her, ties him to a...I don't know, rocket ship(?), then finds out he’s broke, still in school, and drowning in their mom's debt (and not even his bio mom). So scratch the sad inheritance plot. We’re now chasing down a debt-dodging, gambling-addict mother. Except our dumb FL is enraged not but elated that her mother is alive. That's all that matters.
She wore his fake moustache, hahaha
  1. After scamming and kidnapping each other, the step-siblings… cohabitate. And bond. AWWW?? It's because Liu Yan actually starts caring about Li Zan’s future. He wants to drop out (even though he’s a genius) to work off the debt. She won’t let him, especially because she never got to go to college herself and doesn’t want him repeating her mistakes. Such pure babies inside.
  1. After their place gets raided by loansharks, the step-siblings with nowhere to go cohabitate with – you guessed it – the lawyer, our ML. It was didi who roped in the ML into letting two broke clients crash at his place like it was his legal responsibility.
  1. Then comes the ramen. Lu Tian Chi is visibly suffering because if Liu Yan just let him boil the instant noodles like a normal person, he’d be eating by now. But no, she insists on steaming them like buns and crafting a sauce
Liu Yan: Maybe because Lawyer Lu, you've never been at the end of one's rope (無路 = desperate with nowhere to go).
Lu Tian Chi: What do you mean?
Liu Yan: When you're at the end of your rope, have a meal first. Jiang Fang said that.
  1. Lu Tian Chi vacuums up the food – it's bliss. Between bites, he suggests she open a noodle shop. It's so good, the man’s eating the plate if he could.

[Ep4[Jump to: Top | Comments]
  1. The red-white-blue plastic bag that Liu Yan refuses to part with – even when they’re basically homeless and she’s hauling it everywhere — does not contain gold or silver. No. It’s filled with pots. And pans. The red-white-blue bag is the most iconic bag to ever exist in Hong Kong. It's cheap, tough, and practical. It is Hong Kong resilience in bag form xD. It is also Liu Yan in bag form. Then the new grimy place they rent, she should be more concerned about all the mold, but instead it's the table she's fussing over. Because how can a home be without a dinner table? Li Zan solves it: the mahjong table from Jiang Fang. This mom was useful for one thing
  1. Li Zan tasting heaven from Liu Yan's homemade candy and Tang Shuang Shuang going full Mamma Mia over the noodles. Liu Yan captures everyone's heart with her food.
  1. Liu Yan has no luck with lawyers because ML also isn't one.  LOL. That's two scams, two! But to be fair, Lu Tian Chi's business card never claimed that. He’s a legal consultant.

[Ep5[Jump to: Top | Comments]
  1. Sibling bonding ~ 🥹 Li Zan is touched when jiejie packs lunch for him. Awwww. Then Liu Yan is touched when he offers to buy groceries for whatever she wants to make. They were strangers just 5 episodes ago. *Sniffles*
  1. Lu Tian Chi was a lawyer until he sacrificed his career and served two years in prison for faking evidence in Tang Shuang Shuang’s abuse case. She was his first client. And even if she's his last? He has no regrets. Him and Liu Yan are the same people eh. 濫好人. Compulsively good. Excessively good. That's why we have a story!
  2. Lu Tian Chi is so not hot… until he is. Why does holding cotton swabs like a cigarette make him sexy?? I must be sick. It's also unhygienic! Stop it!
  1. Liu Yan offers a wild way to pay back her (mother’s) debt to Old Luo. She tells him to bet on her in a boxing match against a dude literally named "Ferocious Beast (猛獸)." Nobody will think she can win. Which is exactly why the payout will be massive. High risk. High reward. And low survival.
  2. Food 🤤

[Ep6[Jump to: Top | Comments]
  1. These melons.
  2. No really. These melons secretly contain the martial arts technique required to snap Ferocious Beast’s neck.
  1. Food 🤤
  1. Awwww Li Zan, in full didi mode, decides to commit manslaughter to stop his sister from fighting. O_O Because if he hits her opponent (with a motorbike) before the match, maybe Liu Yan won’t have to die in the ring. What's juvenile detention for his sister! D: This grown-up kid. So then Liu Yan asks Lu Tian Chi for a favour: use any means to put her brother to jail. LOL. Just temporarily before he does anything stupid before the match. And if she dies in the ring, can he use that one good photo of her he took of her as her funeral portrait? Thanks. D:
  2. They don’t jail Li Zan. They maroon him. On a boat. In the middle of a lake. The boy can’t swim. LOLBut also, ow ): He breaks down crying, begging to come back. He’s finally felt what it’s like to be loved: Liu Yan nagged him about school, cooked for him, cared about him in a way no one else ever did. There's finally family who actually 心疼s him. He can't lose her too. I love this didi.

[Ep7[Jump to: Top | Comments]
  1. The mom appears! And she's awful. She actually bet money on her own daughter, fully confident she’d win – and now that she’s got money, she ditches her near-dead daughter in the dust. Jiang Fang does love her daughter… but she also really loves money. Like, a lot. This woman is sick and toxic. The whiplash of love and abandonment.
  2. Lu Tian Chi bought Liu Yan a turtle. Because he wants her to be strong. Like the turtle. Hard on the outside, and immortal on the inside or something. It’s sweet. Also, Lu Tian Chi bet against Liu Yan so the payout would be bigger if she won. That’s right. He didn't profit off her suffering – unlike someone. But wait. Liu Yan bet herself. Ha. She's definitely allowed to bet on herself. She's broken everywhere, but at least she's not broke.
  3. The win was rigged, LMAO. I was fooled. Lu Tian Chi and Li Zan (remotely, from the boat. I forgot about him, haha) drugged the yogurt of the opponent.
  4. Liu Yan wants to go to a Ferris wheel when her face is bruised and body is broken. Lu Tian Chi takes her somewhere better. An elevator. Yes. He decorates it with light placards and sends it up and down like a VIP amusement ride. Romeo! xD.
She rejects being spoon fed, lol

[Ep8[Jump to: Top | Comments]
  1. Ohhh something’s happening in that headlock. Wang Yang literally asks Liu Yan out like that. Another Romeo.
Nothing's happening here but...
  1. Li Zan goes ballistic at Lu Tian Chi for sexually assaulting the disabled (i.e. his sister). He's so cutely overreactive and protective with his puny biceps shaking in rage xD
  1. Lu Tian Chi is jealous of Wang Yang, and he's next level as he manipulates the innocent (so innocent!) Li Zan to whine to his sister so that she doesn't leave with Wang Yang to Beijing. Li Zan was so desperate lol and Lu Tian Chi is so smug. A+ meddling
These 3 boys fighting over 1 girl xD

[Ep9[Jump to: Top | Comments]
  1. Li Zan makes Liu Yan extra long birthday noodles because in Chinese culture, long noodles = long life. He also promises to knot noodles for her every year. But he does have a real present: a gold necklace passed down from his actual mom (not Jiang Fang). Aw. Liu Yan is more than a jie to Li Zan.
  1. Lu Tian Chi asks Liu Yan out! Right here in this meat locker with all these pork carcasses👆👇 What a Romeo. (FYI: our ex-boxer-turned-butcher works here while chasing her dream of becoming a chef and our Romeo pays a customer to buy pork specifically from her. What a CEO move, lol.).
  2. Jiang Fang is back. *Eye roll* Only Liu Yan is happy. But the mother only left her a gift and left again. It's dandelion. It's a weed. Symbolic? Maybe. Trash? Most definitely. Now that she knows Jiang Fang is back, Liu Yan prioritizes that. Romance is paused. (Must we?). Li Zan ain't happy either and doesn’t understand how a brain like hers has survived this long. RIGHT
  1. Jiang Fang is missing again. Liu Yan, who isn't allowed to call her mom mom, cries, "Why doesn't my mom love me?" Her mom is addicted to gambling and Liu Yan is addicted to motherly love – both delusional.

[Ep10[Jump to: Top | Comments]
  1. Li Zan comforting his jie. AWW. And he reminds her it's time she wash her hair as he stares at his oily hand, loool.
  1. He Guang Yuan! Remember him? The hotel CEO who's mother's grave Liu Yan almost unearthed? She’s like Jiaya sure is tiny. I've seen your dead mom, and you've almost seen me dead in the competition... Sooo, you hungry? Haha.
Dude feels his head whenever food's good
  1. Our FL has leveled up from butcher to hotel restaurant staff, courtesy of CEO He Guang Yuan. Show is actually using a lot of romcom tropesThis place is filled with polyglots: Cantonese, Japanese, Korean.
[Ep11[Jump to: Top | Comments]
Trigger Warning: This episode continues depiction of sexual violence.

  1. I'm shook. This show's a harem, and He Guang Yuan might be contestant number three in the race for our ex-boxer, debt-loaded FL.
  2. Liu Yan is almost r*ped by the head chef. If only Lu Tian Chi hadn’t been such a jerk at dinner, she wouldn’t have dressed up for him at all... but no, scratch that, the fault is 100% on the predator. Thank god she was a boxer. She’s furious – wants revenge, wants justice, wants to leave – but everyone around her have misplaced priorities. Lu Tian Chi tells her to calm down, the manager says to hold off until the hotel gets through the crisis and Li Zan doesn’t want to leave because... what would he even do in Beijing? Go to school? Yes, actually. Li Zan is actually spiralling because he has convinced himself Liu Yan is ditching him.

[Ep12[Jump to: Top | Comments]
  1. Liu Yan has left Jiaya behind, and she’s thriving – opening a snack bar, hopping on an influencer’s livestream, and sprinting from the police because her food stand is illegal. She's a viral hit.
  1. The second Li Fei (Wang Zi Xuan cameo) calls Liu Yan jie, you just know she’s drawing a line between herself as Wang Yang's girlfriend and Liu Yan as the childhood friend. But actually, I find it a rather realistic jealous-girlfriend portrayal. Do not hate her for it at all. Wang Yang is the one making her insecure.
  2. Meanwhile with Liu Yan gone, Lu Tian Chi's a mess. And harassing our poor Li Zan.
It's not even alcohol, it's 100% saliva all over Li Zan's face
  1. Wang Yang is everywhere Liu Yan is. He’s pouring himself into helping her open a restaurant: scouting for locations, drinking with investors, and possibly throwing in his life savings... We sure he’s someone else’s boyfriend? Because this is giving ride-or-die husband material for a childhood friend.
  1. Where are they finding all these pretty ladies who speak different languages well + Mandarin. Even the hotel manager (the same one who brushed off the sexual violence) had perfect Mando and Canto.

[Ep13[Jump to: Top | Comments]

  1. Liu Yan finally secures her investment; her restaurant dream is about to happen – except Li Zan is hospitalized. Without a second thought, she drops everything and runs back to her brother.
  2. But Wang Yang. He's shattered. This man really did pour in his life savings. His heart was already all in. And Liu Yan just packs her bags and leaves. She comes and goes from his life whenever she wants, never sparing a thought for the guy who's always there to catch her when she falls. Oh no! I'm feeling for Wang Yang. She tells him there's a saying she believes in: never have extremely high expectations of someone. (OH PLEASE. Liu Yan, you're the last person to say when you continue to wait for your mom). She apologizes, and he’s standing there, eyes glassy. Then he forces a laugh to break the tension. He forgives her because he loves her that much. Always has, probably always will.
  1. Liu Yan approaches Old Luo – the city's most infamous loanshark – with food. She wins his stomach and gets a favour. It's not for money to solve Li Zan's problem. She wants to borrow his men...for intimidation. (Ok, but what about some actual money to pay back Wang Yang D:
[Ep14[Jump to: Top | Comments]

  1. He Guang Yuan’s got mother issues too. >_> His whole life, she chipped away at him, telling him he was garbage, talentless, a piece of fart. Her exact words. He's a brilliant chef, okay. But every meal he cooks is met with a degrading insult. It messed up something in his brain and heart. He is like a Liu Yan. The love and respectful for a mother who ruined you.
  2. He Guang Yuan fires Philip! Good riddance to the r*pist. With the ceiling (aka Philip’s mediocrity) finally lifted, the restaurant can actually thrive. And the female manager who covered up the sexual assault for the sake of the hotel...fired by He Guang Yuan too. He has no tolerance for this sh*t. I like him.
  3. Liu Yan returns to the hotel – with a promotion. Because she made He Guang Yuan rub his head
  1. Tang Shuang Shuang goes to bat for Lu Tian Chi, explaining to Liu Yan that decking Philip was a massive risk for Lu Tian Chi. He has a record; if Philip had pressed charges, it won't just be two years in prison.
  2. The city’s most infamous loanshark (Old Lao) is also obsessed with Liu Yan’s cooking. Of course. If he wasn't a grandpa, he'd be part of the harem too.
[Ep15[Jump to: Top | Comments]
  1. I just realized Lu Tian Chi and Liu Yan are nine years apart. And he’s got a criminal record. Lol. Talk about your atypical male lead.
  2. Liu Yan spent her whole life cooking for hungry people. AKA, the rest of us mortals. But now she has to learn how to cook for the "not-hungry" i.e. those who eat just for luxury. Lu Tian Chi looks at her. "Are you speaking human?"A food vendor shares the same sentiment: "Wtf is a not-hungry human?"
"Lu Tian Chi you fake lawyer. You big fat liar." Incessantly on repeat in canto, lol.
  1. Someone save Tang Shuang Shuang from another(?) abusive relationship. Her fiancé swings between beating her and love bombing her, weaponizing affection just to keep control.
Lu Tian Chi tells her to stare into a tiger's eye for inner peace lol. She's marrying a tiger irl. Please.
  1. Jiang Fang (the mom) lives in the sewage. I kid not. She drops Lu Tian Chi a pin, and he actually finds it.

[Ep16[Jump to: Top | Comments]
  1. Liu Yan gets arrested! Again. Well, "taken for questioning." For illegally working without Jiaya citizenship. And since Jiaya normally couldn’t care less about immigrants, someone absolutely snitched. I love that He Guang Yuan and Lu Tian Chi are there too. It's the place she met the both of them for the first time
  2. Liu Yan gets proposed! This drama, lol. So many unpredictable directions, but realistic: It's a fake marriage suggested by Lu Tian Chi so that she can lie to the government for residency. No wonder this can't be set in China looolHe starts pitching her candidates. She humours him, and actually picks one for fun. He immediately trashes each and every one of them. Eventually, she straight-up asks him to find her the perfect candidate. He agrees with so much regret.
  3. Lu Tian Chi lands a business deal with Jiang Fang from the sewage – literally. The gambling-addict mom tips him off that one of the ways this famous company built its fortune is through scams – specifically 殺豬盤 = "pig-butchering plate". Victims are treated like pigs being fattened up before slaughtering. They lure victims, build trust, lend them money, then bleed them dry and finally cut them off. His lawyer buddy’s like, Why bother helping these victims? You’re about to fight a massive corporation for people who will just gamble away any payout you win.
  4. Lu Tian Chi does secure a settlement. But it's under the table, and the “big payout” is actually just a tenth of what the company scammed. He rips up the cheque. Jiang Fang is enraged because the cold truth is no jury will ever pity gamblers. And then, this woman, with zero shame, suggests he go back, reclaim the cheque, and split it with her without telling the clients. Get out, woman.
[Ep17[Jump to: Top | Comments]
  1. Liu Yan didn't want to get in He Guang Yuan's car, but Lu Tian Chi insisted because she's tired and it's late. Well, look who's jealous, and look who's smug.
  2. Look who's here: it's Jiang Fa(il-at-Adulti)ng. Lu Tian Chi’s fuming, seeing her cozying up and apologizing to her daughter. Then she flat-out lies that he forced her to stay away. PLEASE. Now Liu Yan’s upset at him. UGH.
  3. Jiang Fang says she has cancer.  OMG. This just gets worse. Li Zan ain't having it and interrogates her, but Liu Yan trusts her. One mantou, and Liu Yan's an idiot for her mom.  >__>.

[Ep18[Jump to: Top | Comments]
  1. Uh oh. It looks like Lu Tian Chi is on the corporate hit list as he's being tailed after exposing their Pig-Butchering-Plate scam.
  2. I love this continuity of Lu Tian Chi using the megaphone at the beginning. It first appeared in Ep15 to broadcast this message: "Lu Tian Chi, you fake lawyer. You big fat liar.". Now, at the end of this episode, he gets accused of this again.
[Ep19[Jump to: Top | Comments]
  1. There is no noble idiocy \o/ Lu Tian Chi is slandered on the news, scarping at another new low, but that doesn't stop his confession to Liu Yan: "I can provide you cohabitation services." LOL. Ah, RomeoHe even bought her a car. Pink. But this drama's filter, it's hard to see pink lol. Actually, he sold his own car to buy a new one because they need shared property to file for cohabitation and get her citizenship. He is practical and romantic, lolWhen Liu Yan gets inside, she notices the decorative lights look oddly familiar. Because Lu Tian Chi's been lugging those string lights around everywhere to confess. LMAO.  Finally it's time to drive the car to die by her driving skills.
  1. Jiang Fang is a menace. Even Li Zan falls for her sob story about hiding her cancer diagnosis so she can score him a massive insurance payout after she dies. Once she's got his trust, she knocks him out, steals Liu Yan’s bank card, empties her accounts, and cleans out the house. By sunrise, all the money's gone to gambling. Her brain cancer was a lie too. Obviously.
  1. Liu Yan is STILL trying to fix her mom. Someone fix Liu Yan. It will require Lu Tian Chi’s help. What’s the plan? Liu Yan: "Live with me." Lu Tian Chi’s face: Oh yes, babyThen they go buy BDSM toys. They're not. It's just when the owner sees Liu Yan and Lu Tian Chi shopping for chains, he busts out his sexy fluffy cuff collection, lolLiu Yan pays with his card, but needs his pin. It's her birthday. Rawr.
See the cosplay dog ears. Rawr.
  1. Liu Yan is seriously delusional. Liu Yan thinks playing cards and mahjong with Jiang Fang for six straight days and nights until she’s so sick of gambling, she never wants to touch it again. Or at least I think that's the planThat’s why Lu Tian Chi’s moving in to keep the games going every minute. The cuffs are to keep her in her seat.
  1. Even in the chaos, Lu Tian Chi remembers the essentials: selfies to prove their cohabitation. He's so efficient: snapping pics while brushing their teeth, and yes, even sitting on the toilet. TMI, lol.
[Ep20[Jump to: Top | Comments]
  1. Jiang Fang... has “turned over a new leaf.” Only Liu Yan is happy. Somehow Jiang Fang is out here helping Lu Tian Chi recruit people for gambling rehab and giving He Guang Yuan’s boss-chef brain culinary inspiration. The woman who once gambled her soul away is now a life coach. Incredible.
  2. Liu Yan updates Wang Yang about her mom. Ughhh, they such good friends. Wang Yang’s got news too: turns out he's his girlfriend #4 boyfriend. Wow! But, lol, he's also in Liu Yan's harem, haha. Then he “casually” asks if Liu Yan is still seeing that (fake) lawyer. And if he ever bullies her, just one word and Wang Yang will be there to have her back. Still in love with her.
  3. Jiang Fang is team He Guang Yuan as she invites him over for food. Of course. She's Team Money, and he's basically a CEO
  1. This parallel between WY&LY and LTC&TSS. Wang Yang is not heading over to Liu Yan,  but Lu Tian Chi is sprinting toward Tang Shuang Shuang. They had a code: “Thank you” means SOS. Now she only replies her fans with “Thank you,” Red flag. He also notices that her makeup looks caked on, and her hands are covered in it too. (His instinct are dead on. Her husband is abusing her.)
  2. The chefs are cute. They all end up with food-poisoning because they were excitedly having cake in preparation for He Guang Yuan's birthday without He Guang Yuan being there and so only him and Liu Yan are still standing.
[Ep21[Jump to: Top | Comments]
  1. The food poisoning was courtesy of the Korean gambling bro, taking orders from Philip the Sex Pest who decided the best way to sabotage He Guang Yuan’s shot at the cooking competition was a little gastrointestinal warfare. Also there's this canto guy who calls Philip like "非禮" which means sexually harass.
  1. At the crack of dawn, He Guang Yuan shows up at Liu Yan’s door. He knows his favourite food! There's a time and place for this and this is not the time. It's sesame pancake. But the place he wants them from is hours away, and at a ... temple. But in between, a trip to a grave. It's He Guang Yuan's turn to blackout and dig at his mother's grave. LOL Just like Liu Yan. He screams at his mother's ashes: she never once ate his food properly because she had tongue cancer. Then she refused treatment (because she'd lose her taste?). She literally chose flavour over survival.
  1. Meanwhile, Lu Tian Chi is even farther away, checking up on Tang Shuang Shuang, trapped with her abusive husband, Pierre. With Pierre having eyes everywhere, their rendezvous point is at a nail salon as they share information while getting their manicure done.
He's a HK actor.
  1. He Guang Yuan's father is a monk! That explains the hair inspiration. The Monk Dad only agrees to make it once he hears He Guang Yuan’s reason: he wants to make them for someone else. Because food isn’t about perfection – it’s about sharing with people you love. All these years, He Guang Yuan’s mom brainwashed him into thinking his pancakes tasted like trash. He believed her. Not anymore.
  2. Wang Yang’s here! Lu Tian Chi too! An auntie spills the tea: Liu Yan ran off with a man for two days, and her mom drove off in a pink car. The two guys spiral on two different points: Wang Yang panics about Liu Yan disappearing for 48 hours straight, while Lu Tian Chi is fixated on the pink car. His pink car. The mom pawned it. Lu Tian Chi knows this gambling-addict so well lol

[Ep22[Jump to: Top | Comments]
  1. This drama is a PUA universe. Li Zan has finally figured it out. The villain of the piece isn’t just Jiang Fang. It’s Liu Yan herself. Jiang Fang will always gamble, always lie, always pawn the nearest pink car. But Liu Yan keeps forgiving, keeps folding her mother back into her life like nothing happened. That’s the real tragedy. All our characters are like this: Tang Shuang Shuang got PUA-ed by Pierre, He Guang Yuan by his mom, and Liu Yan’s been PUA-ed by her own mother since birth. The difference is, everyone else is slowly crawling out, except Liu Yan. Tang Shuang Shuang finally escapes her PUA-er. She leaves with nothing – 淨身出戶 ($$$), stripped clean – and she’s still smiling. He Guang Yuan is over his mother and doing proper cooking. Liu Yan.... pays for mother's debt AGAIN. This time they sign a contract to cut mother-daughter ties. Very valid because they signed it in front of a Nezha statue.
Now for the Harem Pageant:

  1. Candidate #1: Wang Yang. Man literally flew across the country because Liu Yan left him on read. This man! When he sees her running a kitchen like a boss, his smile is so proud, so proud. I like this guy :O.
  1. Candidate #2: He Guang Yuan. The official work husband. Liu Yan has basically moved into the hotel('s bathtub?) because the restaurant (aka He Guang Yuan in human form) needs her. Lu Tian Chi is grumpy. What happened to their cohabitation evidence?? Don’t worry. CEO Work Husband actually has a legal solution: a work visa to keep her in Jiaya. This candidate even comes with cute eavesdroppers.
  1. Candidate #3: Lu Tian Chi. Our actual guy. He pisses her off because he snickers at her scrappy contract "officially" severing ties with Jiang Fang. He laughs that even if you signed this in front of Sun Wukong himself, it wouldn’t be binding. But Liu Yan doesn’t want logic, she wants comfort, a normal relationship. He misreads her, thinking she’s still clinging to her mom. No, dummy—it’s YOU she wants. When he realizes, he sprints off looking for her, convinced she’s… in the ocean. He can’t even swim, but in he goes, ready to drown for love.
  2. But Liu Yan was never in the ocean, lol. She drags him out and just lets him stew in his misunderstanding. Later that night, she catches him dunking his head in a basin, testing if sound travels underwater. Why? Because he needs to know if she heard his confession. AWW. She did. Of course she did. She wasn’t even in the damn water. The second he confirms she heard, he pulls her in and kisses her deeply. Winner of the Harem Pageant: Candidate #3, Lu Tian Chi!

[Ep23[Jump to: Top | Comments]

  1. The morning confession between Liu Yan and Lu Tian Chi <3. They’re official now. He makes her food, and she swears it’s the best food she’s had in her entire life. She never believed in love lasting forever (thanks, Jiang Fang, for ruining that), so she’s like: if we're ever not together anymore, at least let’s keep eating well and living well. Ominous much?
  2. Meanwhile, Jiang Fang’s debt collectors beat Liu Yan at work. He Guang Yuan throws himself in to defend her and gets injured so badly he can’t cook for The Black Pearl Restaurant Guide judges (basically Michelin). But the chef squad has his back and they get him the top honour: 3 Pearls! And then He Guang Yuan confesses. WOW. He wants to cook with Liu Yan forever. Too late, man. Bald-rubs were never her thing, chef! But Liu Yan hands her resignation letter. She stuck around for her promise to get those 3 Pearls
  1. Lu Tian Chi is dragged against his will back to the company he took down for their pig-slaughtering methods. They dangle a cushy lawyer job. He refuses. Not just that though. He walks away from the millions he earned in order to run back to Beijing with Liu Yan and live a broke-but-blissful life together. Man has his priorities straight? Can't you earn that money first...
  2. And Wang Yang! He’s literally dancing on video chat when Liu Yan says she’s finally coming home. This guy, so cute! But then she intentionally tells him she's bringing his brother-in-law, Lu Tian Chi back with her. Awwwww. Wang Yang hiding his heartbreak, but still smiling through.
  1. AND THEN. LU TIAN CHI GETS STRAIGHT-UP MURDERED. Murdered!! By the company he sued. His blood spills out into the street, mixing with tomatoes he bought, making the blood look like tomato juice. This is not funny D:
[Ep24[Jump to: Top | Comments]

After Lu Tian Chi’s death murder, Liu Yan’s world goes grey – literally. Our screen drains of all colour, and so does she. Life becomes mechanical, every day a copy of the last. Even food, which once brought her joy and comfort, now tastes like nothing. This is Liu Yan, the woman who always remembered to eat, no matter how tough life got. She has abandoned her passion for cooking and drifts through life as a real estate agent. The agency motto is printed on the wall: “Here, our service only has a starting point. If you’re satisfied, there is no end point.” Watching Liu Yan recite this feels like her grief itself has no end point. :(
Through all this, Wang Yang never leaves her side. He picks her up, drops her off, makes sure she eats, and keeps her company. One night, he makes a casual suggestion: they should just spend the rest of their lives together. She can treat him like her personal driver. Aw. :( Tears roll down Liu Yan’s face. She says that he won’t like her answer. Wang Yang only smiles.

Wang Yang: Then I’ll wait. I’ll wait until you (want to) say something I like to hear.
Liu Yan: You’re crazy. Wait? Until you’re an old Beijing man – 大老爺 (da lao ye)?
Wang Yang: Perfect. Then I’ll match you – a 大媽 (da ma).
Everyone tries to reach Liu Yan: her brother Li Zan, her friend Tang Shuang Shuang, even He Guang Yuan. He Guang Yuan wants to hire her for his new franchise in Beijing. (A  plan Wang Yang and He Guang Yan arranged to guide Liu Yan back to her cooking). No. It doesn't work. When He Guang Yuan sees her force a smile, it breaks him. He Guang Yuan cries on the spot.
Timeline of Liu Yan’s Grief
  • 10 months ago: Liu Yan found Lu Tian Chi’s lifeless body. She became lifeless that day since.
  • 6 months ago: She finally saw Jiang Fang’s true nature. Honouring Lu Tian Chi’s last wish, she sent her mother to rehab for her gambling addiction.
  • Later: The president of Putai Group was sentenced to death for fraud and for murdering Lu Tian Chi.
Liu Yan does start to change! It doesn't come from anyone lecturing her, but from empathy. Liu Yan finds a young boy hiding inside the house she's to sell.  For the first time in ten months, she cooks for the boy. He bursts into tears. It’s so delicious he begs her to teach him how to cook. He wants to make food for his mother, who’s struggling to rebuild their life after a divorce. Is "mother-love" Liu Yan's Achilles' heel? Either way, she's reminded how good it is to make food for others. Liu Yan tells him to leave the grown-up problems to the adults and, for now, to just eat. Then she passes on the line that always stayed with her: "走頭無路先吃得點一頓 When you have nowhere left to go, sit down and eat a good meal first."

And there it is – the first spark of the old Liu Yan!

Wang Yang had once discovered a hidden stash of uneaten buns tucked away in Liu Yan’s scooter. Furious and heartbroken, he scolded her for not eating. She lashed back at him. There isn’t a single day she doesn’t think of Lu Tian Chi. Not one. She wishes she could forget, but she can’t. Growing up, she never dared to love deeply, not until Lu Tian Chi. And when she finally gave her whole heart, he was cruelly taken from her. The pain left her terrified of loving again, terrified of losing anything precious. She’s stuck – unable to let go of the past, unwilling to face the future. Wang Yang could only watch as she sped away on her motorbike, his heart breaking for her.
(ಥ﹏ಥ)

And tonight, Wang Yang sees the spark too! When he shows up at her place with a warm meal, and opens her fridge, he freezes. It’s no longer empty. It’s full. And then – at 43:16 – the screen is colourful again. Liu Yan’s world comes alive again.
1 month later.

Liu Yan opens her own tiny restaurant – well, technically a food truck but with French-style decor, serving Beijing fusion noodles. Plastered on the side of the truck is a photo Lu Tian Chi took of her: mid-roar, fierce and determined. Her passion is back.
He Guang Yuan and his fellow chefs roll up wearing sunglasses like culinary mafia bosses lol. Tang Shuang Shuang pops in to livestream the grand opening, hyping up Liu Yan’s big comeback. By the end of the day, they’re completely sold out. Thankfully, Li Zan secretly stashed three bowls of noodles for the crew to eat, or they would’ve gone hungry themselves.
He Guang Yan forgot to coordinate the heart with his sous-chef first
MmmmMMM!

By the way, Liu Yan's restaurant is called Yan 鹽 (=Salt). You'll see it on the bowls too.

And how could we end the show without seeing the woman who traumatized her: Jiang Fang, her mom. She's....free of gambling?

Liu Yan thinks to herself that her mother is right about this: 走頭無路先吃得點一頓. When you have nowhere left to go, sit down and eat a good meal first.)

But her mother is also wrong. There is never truly 走頭無路 – never truly a place of no way out.

The end.

I'm rooting for you Wang Yang!! ৻( •̀ ᗜ •́ ৻)

Remarks

[First Impression (Ep1-3)]

I didn’t expect to go beyond sampling Ep1, especially since it wasn’t even that appealing. But here I am!

By Ep3 someone gets scammed, someone else gets kidnapped, a grave is emotionally misdug, and ramen becomes a source of life wisdom. It's so random, and yet so grounded, but still so random. After scamming and kidnapping each other, they somehow form a bond. Meanwhile, a lawyer thinks he’s scored a rich client, only to end up housing two broke bums. And now we have a mother mystery. You will have no idea where this story is heading, and that’s the fun.

The opening theme was weird, but weirdly catchy, starting off with a dramatic "Ma-ma!" Turns out it’s sung by Faye Wong! (And the FL). Did not see that coming. Then again, I didn’t expect any of this from the show.

Pssst, FL doesn't look it, but she attracts a lot of guys ^^"

⚠️ One warning though – this is a real bad spoiler. I'll keep the actual detail in the comment section. It's about the ending which is a dealbreaker for a lot of you. But I am genuinely glad I went in blind. I got to enjoy the full ride without the dread, and I liked how it wrapped up. So: you do you. A suggestions if you may: if you're even slightly intrigued by the story, I suggest giving it 3 episodes blind as well. By then if you love the uncertainty and absurdity, then don't read the spoiler. Commit and embrace the ride. Be brave. LOL.

[Cast&Crew] FL actresss Leah Dou (Dou Jing Tong) is a singer-songwriter. It's not her first time acting. She has been in two movies before, one with He Kai Lang and the same director.

[Ending] Bitter, and then happy, optimistic.

[A Highlight] In Ep6, when they marooned the sweetest didi on a boat in the middle of the lake, and the poor boy cannot swim xD. It's so heart-warming 🤣

[Review & Rating]
My first time using this: a hidden gem. Because this drama is so niche. From the start, the casting alone narrows its audience. It’s a clear statement: this isn’t about pretty faces or glossy visuals, it’s about the story. And by the end, I get why they were confident enough to take that risk. (Whether it paid off is another matter, lol.)

Still, it’s not an easy watch. The story weaves grief into its course, and the FL herself can be hard to embrace. She’s relentlessly positive "😃", always seeing the good in people and pushing for harmony no matter the cost. That kind of blunt, unwavering idealism isn’t immediately likable to me anymore, and without the usual visual gloss to soften things, I was left face-to-face with her worldview. I can’t say I fully warmed to her, but I came away loving the journey she took me on anyway.

And what a journey. You never know where she’ll take you next. It’s one absurd turn after another: grave-digging, boxing, sous-chef-ing, and more I won’t spoil here. But it somehow stays grounded. They find a lot of happiness without money. The mix of ridiculous scenarios and naturalistic storytelling gives the drama an odd, irresistible charm.

Strangely endearing ensemble. Along the way, I realized this was technically a harem drama, though it never feels like one. Each man drifts into her life so seamlessly that you don’t even notice the pattern forming. The first appears and I’m thinking, Oh, he’s fun and perfect for her. Then the next shows up, and I’m kind of torn. By the third, I realize he’s been there all along, quietly being the sweetest of them all. Damn

The main romance is still strong – I fully ship it – but the show never pits the men against each other. It’s such a rare balance. There’s no “better” choice, no rivalry, just really, really good men, ugh so good. <3

...Okay, fine, maybe I exposed the real reason I stayed. I did have "visuals":
Rating: 4/5
