Drama Overview & Review

[Drama Info]

Airdropped. This drama announced its premiere just a few hours before release.

Directed by Wang Tao Tao, who previously delivered a similar suspense-heavy tone in The Crack of Dawn (with Ma Si Chun)

There's a bit of a billing blight. Wei Da Xun was always first-billed, followed by Sun Qian. Then, once the drama aired, Wang Zhen Er suddenly appeared above everyone else. *Scratches head* But the billing reshuffling has nothing to do with Wang Zhen Er and everything to do with the morality of the story. The three leads, Wei Da Xun, Sun Qian, and Gao Zhi Ting, are playing characters who are, by premise, guilty. And since, as you all know, the Chinese are a nation of impeccably good and conscientious citizens, the drama cannot have these three front and centre as leads. So Wang Zhen Er, who plays the upright cop, is pushed forward to take the lead.

The drama also went through title changes from 無罪之身 (The Sinless Person) to 有罪之身 (The Guilty), with both the Chinese and English titles moving away from ambiguity and toward explicitly framing the characters as guilty

Wrapped on December 09, 2024 after one month of filming (November 10).

[Ending] Not very happy

Ending CliffsNotes. (!!! Spoilers !!!). By the end, justice is carried out, but it comes at this cost...  It is not a comforting, but it is coherent. [Top | Skip »]
The decisive blow was delivered by Xia Xue (Sun Qian), making her the murderer. Lu Ming (Wei Da Xun) and Lin Hua (Gao Zhi Ting) were her accomplices, and the three of them are truly ride-or-die. Lin Hua first tries to take full responsibility and turns himself in, because he is the only one who knows where the body is buried. Lu Ming then attempts to shoulder the blame, ultimately sacrificing his life to free both Lin Hua and Xia Xue. In the end, however, Xia Xue still turns herself in. Because Chinese peeps are that law-abiding.

The other (and true) villain is Hou Jun. The drama revolves around two separate crimes: the murder of Ma De Rong’s son (committed by the three leads), and the kidnapping of Ma De Rong’s granddaughter, Shan Shan, who is also Xia Xue’s daughter. It is later revealed that the factory fire from ten years ago was not an accident but an act of arson meant to destroy Ma De Rong’s business. Hou Jun, Ma De Rong’s long-suffering and constantly bullied secretary, orchestrated everything with the help of a mole inside the police station. In the end, everyone is punished (Lin Hua: 2 years; Xia Xue: 3 years; Hou Jun: death sentence).

Justice is delivered, but it is not a rewarding ending.

I absolutely did my part in supporting you, Wei Da Xun xD.

The beginning felt genuinely promising, built on a beautiful friendship and hints of romance. It did not T_T, and I wish the crime narrative or emotional payoff had been just a little stronger for these three friends who made me so depressed.

Rating: 2/5
