Drama Overview & Review

[Drama Info]

This is a loose reimagining of Guo Jing Ming's Painted Skin, rather than a direct adaptation. It is a Guo Jing Ming project even though his name doesn’t appear plainly in the credits. He has been known to use aliases. For Veil of Shadows, he is credited under Lu Jue (陸覺). For My Journey to You, he was credited as Gu Xiao Sheng (顧曉聲)

One of the biggest incidents was the Hengdian fire. In March 2025, a fire broke out on set during filming while shooting a bonfire scene. Fortunately, everyone was evacuated safely and no injuries were reported.

Ju Jing Yi’s transformation. Guo Jing Ming’s aesthetic is very different from Ju Jing Yi’s usual Ju-Jing-Yi-style, so fans are excited about this “new Ju Jing Yi”. It's going to be the same. But the attention around her for this drama is also amplified because of her ongoing contract dispute with Siba / Star48, which has cast a veil of shadow over the release and promotion of her dramas. 🍉 Read more on her profile here

Zeng Shun Xi is reunited with both his leading ladies (Ju Jing Yi from Rebirth for You and Chen Du Ling from A Lonely Hero’s Journey)

Wrapped on April 11, 2025

Main CPTian Jia Rui and Ju Jing Yi. They are the true (1)ML and (1)FL in both screen time and narrative weight. My favourite part of their arc lands very late though (Ep24/25). [Top | Skip »]

(!!! Spoilers for Ep25 !!!)

The story that "Awoo is A Wu" 🥺 ended up being the most emotionally effective storyline for me. She cut off her tail to become the plush so Ji Ling wouldn’t be swallowed by loneliness (Ji Can) . Up until this point, the drama already had quite a few creative mini-arcs, but to introduce something this quietly heartrending so late in the game really stood out.

When Lu Wang Yan tells Wu Shi Guang, “Who said I can’t see the stars? 🥺” is where she truly embraces loving him. She chooses to stay in that world – blind, aging, dying – because it’s the only place where she can love him fully. I was touched here, but then absolutely nothing else happens for this CP afterwards.

(!!! Spoilers for Ep24 !!!)

Yan An's original Yuan Wu Huo is butterflied into two beings because of the Butterfly Daemon(s):

1) Butterfly Daemon (Yuan Wu Huo) → wants to free TJR
2) Li Jie → wants to protect TJR

Both Yan Ans are driven by the same core desire: their love for TJR as their didi. Originally, Tian Jia Rui is Yan An’s real didi, but that version of TJR dies. Later, Ji Ling (a fox) takes on TJR’s appearance, becoming a kind of “second didi” to Yan An.

Even when Butterfly Daemon appears antagonistic, his true goal is to free Ji Ling from being trapped as the fake dragon. It’s very GJM-level contrived, but thematically consistent. Once that mission is fulfilled and “TJR dies," Butterfly Daemon can finally move on and reunite with his family on the other side of life – including his original didi.

Li Jie, meanwhile, continues wandering, searching for his purpose.

This relationship comes very late. Si Feng and Hua Qi hadn’t even shared a proper scene before this, and in that moment, it somehow works! It’s unexpectedly touching.

(!!! Spoilers for Ending !!!)

Lu Wu Yi is taken over by 9Baby (Jiu Ying) and has gained (9)dragon powers, 9-tailed fox regeneration → basically infinite power and immortality. How do you beat that? Hack the past and stop it before it happens. At this point, I am exhausted that the resolution is to hack the past. It feels like every drama defaults to a reset whether at the beginning (rebirth) or the end of a show (redo).

Ji Ling’s time-travel sequence is visually epic – a full GJM-eque formation scene calling back everyone, including GHOSTS 😂 We get Xia Zhi Guang, Omid, Bai Ze (Guo Zheng Rong), Chang Hua Sen, and even Tian Jia Rui again as Ji Can. I was genuinely touched to see Ji Can. (And then I imagine them all standing in front of a green screen and it becomes a little funny again.)
Ji Ling defeats the Fox Lord – the final form of 9Baby in the past – and takes Lu Wu Yi away before the 9Baby shard was ever in her. They disappear somewhere – another space, another dimension. While the mechanics are hazy as hell, Main CP = happily ever after. Somewhere.

Back in the main timeline, time resets. Lu Wu Yi never existed, but everyone else survives. The 2CP gets their happy ending: Wu Shi Guang retains his memories, while Lu Wang Yan does not, though her heart is still swelling with love for Wu Shi Guang.

Nobody asked, but Jin Jing ends up with the Weasel (You Chi) and forgets her ex was Chang Hua Sen.

The lingering question is Li Jie. If Ji Ling no longer exists in this reset timeline, then logically Li Jie shouldn’t exist either, since he was created from the desire to protect Ji Ling. Yet he does exist, just without memory of Ji Ling or the voice calling him. I can't wrap my mind around this paradox, but in true Guo Jing Ming fashion, Li Jie continuing to search becomes proof that Ji Ling exists somewhere, in some world.

TL;DR: This drama made very little sense… so I watched all of it :D

I actually found this boring in many spots. But the ideas, concepts were anything but boring. It's really an interestingly strange combo.

This drama is creative in a very absurd way (e.g. how did the fox become that and then… pregnant?) It just keeps raising these bizarre questions. New arcs, new concepts, one after another. No fillers, just a constant stream of oddly logical ideas. It’s actually very interesting if you’re willing to sit there and try to process what you just watched.

The issue is, for a good two-thirds of the drama, I felt almost nothing for the characters AND the romance for both pairing – even when they were clearly feeling A LOT.

But the final stretch hits. The plush storyline and the many versions of Yan An were, surprisingly, emotionally effective for me.

The ending is very Guo Jing Ming for his new favourite boy: unresolved, a little tragic, but also poetic. Yet! In a very un-GJM way, this is also the happiest ending I’ve seen from him, which definitely helped bump this up.

Rating: 3/5
