[Ep1Gu Qian Fan is at a popular teahouse, owned by the gorgeous Zhao Pan’er. When he assesses her face, he’s not impressed. We call this 是心非 (kou shi xin fei). His heart was clearly mesmerized but he says the opposite. Zhao Pan’er is within earshot and she’s miffed at the uncalled for insult. I think she’s more offended when he compares her to the city girls. Well, in a short while, our ML won’t be able to hide his astonishment with her, like right now. Really random bandits take her hostage and she actually doesn’t need a ML saving her! There’s a 2FL teaming up with her. She’s Sun San Niang and she whips a basin like a frisbee. Zhao Pan’er doesn’t know martial arts but she puts up a fight too. The women are beating the men (and destroying the teahouse)Gu Qian Fan is a tad dumbstruck at the girls, but snaps out of it when Zhao Pan’er is in danger. Our ML takes action and saves her. Nevermind, she does need a ML saving her. Meh. San Niang is alright on her own. She used to be a butcher and all butchers are great fighters apparently

Zhao Pan’er thanks Gu Qian Fan by serving him the most expensive tea, but when she learns he’s from the Capital Security Office, she drops it on purpose. He demands her to remake one. He’s not accepting her excuses. Spilled the tea? Pour some more. Stove is out? Light it. Well, he asked for it. She pairs her tea with a dessert that will surely make him diarrhetic. But she underestimated him. He sees through her schemes and chucks the tea out from the cup.

Since she offended him, he offends her. From the way she moves and talks, he can tell where she grew up. “So which brothel did you work at before?” Gritting her teeth, but with her head kept level, she testifies that at 9yo, she became a slave because her father was found guilty. She served as ‘music prostitute’ (dancer/performer). In a flashback, the child actresses looked less than <10yo and were dancing for old scums. Sick. At 16, she was pardoned from her slave identity. Gu Qian Fan has heard enough. He’s actually a fair man. Once he knows the reason for her hostility (it was his department that punished her family), he backs off and doesn’t punish her for offending him (when he could).

Song Yin Zhang (a pipa player at a performance house) elopes with Zhou She (a merchant man) after Zhao Pan’er (who’s like an older sister to Song) disapproves. The man was sketchy. From the way he held his tea cup, she knew he’s a gambler. Never pick up a teacup with just your thumb and middle finger. From the way he smelled, she knew he frequents the most expensive brothels. From his inability to recite a famous lyric, she knew he lied about being musical soulmates with Song Yin Zhang. Our ML and FL... aren’t they observant? He can tell she was a performer and she can tell this other guy is a gambler just from the way they move

Zhao Pan’er and Gu Qian Fan cross paths again. She was visiting Minister Yang Zhi Yuan for help (because he can lighten Song Yin Zhang’s punishment for escaping). He is visiting Mr. Yang to recover the painting (The Night Revels). Zhao Pan’er quickly hides. She hears Mrs. Yang holler at Gu Qian Fan for being wicked like his father. She also hears Gu Qian Fan demanding for the real painting when Mr. Yang gives him a fake one.

[Ep2] Gu Qian Fan is ambushed at Yang’s manor and falls to the toxic gas. Zhao Pan’er saves him because he pierced her with a dagger, which he claims is poisonous. If she doesn’t save him, then she will die too. Once they’re safe, she volunteers to be his witness (why is her priority not getting the antidote?). She knows the target was Yang family and Gu was caught in the crossfire. Gu Qian Fan wants her to stay out of it. It will be too late to regret it when she’s facing death, but Zhao Pan’er isn’t the type to regret once she’s determined. Now she asks for an antidote, but he stabs her instead! She’s alive. It’s to take out the dagger that’s in her shoulder. Oh, and it’s not poisonous. I think he attacked her because she doesn’t know fear when it’s obviously dangerous ahead. In his way, he’s protecting her

Gu Qian Fan warns her that he could actually hurt her. Zhao Pan'er jumps forward to bite him on the shoulder. “If you hurt (動手) me, then I will bite (動口) you.” If you don’t know Chinese, you may not know why she bit him. He said 動手 which means ‘hurt' but literally, it means 'to move one's hands'. Her rebuttal is that if he’s going to move his hands, then she will 動口 = move her mouth (bite)

Zhao Pan’er’s beau, Ouyang Xu, passed the imperial exam! She had saved him three years ago, bought him a place so that he could register for the exam, and supported him all these years. And how does he repay her? By marrying another woman! Zhao Pan’er wants to confirm the truth for herself. She trusts her eye in men. Ouyang Xu isn’t the unfaithful type. What if Ouyang Xu is in trouble? What if he was threatened to marry the niece of the royal consort? She will head to the Eastern City to verify.

Gu Qian Fan is a wanted man. He chanced upon Zhao Pan’er. She helps him sneak onto the boat. She also treats his wound. It's so painful, he faints. When he wakes up. He returns the bed to her. She tells him there’s porridge, and taunts him that there's laxatives in it. He eats it. And compliments her cooking. Then it’s followed by a back and forth quarrel. She wants money, he’s got none. She calls him a rogue, and he calls her a miser. She says he’s insidious, and he says she’s harsh. She reacts to his last word and shouts that he’s immoral, unfaithful, and irresponsible. “All you men are no good”. She’s having a breakdown.
Gu Qian Fan can tell Zhao Pan’er’s last remarks are directed at the man who left her. He gives her a handkerchief. She thanks him and apologizes to him. She tells him he’s not a devil (note: he’s known as the Living King of Hell). He’s human and a good one. Although she only met him for a few days, she just knows it. He also knows her too. If she called her fiancé unfaithful, then that means deep down in her heart, she doesn’t trust him.

Sun San Niang is floating in the water! When Gu Qian Fan realizes it’s Zhao Pan’er’s friend, he dives into the water.

[Ep3] Gu Qian Fan saves Sun San Niang, but exposes himself. The captain recognizes him. Zhao Pan’er tells him to rest easy. She will take care of it. She lies to the Captain that Gu Qian Fan is Xiao Ming Fan (= Xiao Name (is) Ordinary). He’s a government official. They’re eloping and she’s pregnant. Gu Qian Fan was listening and asking if she’s serious (about being pregnant). He’s worried because the medication they applied cannot be taken during pregnancy. He also doesn’t believe a maiden could make such a lie to ruin her reputation so it must be real that she’s expectant and it’s with her fiancé. Zhao Pan’er stutters. She lied to help him as repayment for saving her friend. It’s not that big of a deal.

Zhao Pan’er: Furthermore, I never said it was someone else’s child. I said it was your child – He cocks his head  I mean, I only said it to the captain, other people won’t know. So what I’m saying is other people won’t know it’s your child. – He sits down with a sly smile  I didn’t mean it like that. I want to say –
Gu Qian Fan (sighs): It’s alright (x3). I’ll just accept this bad luck. It’s mine so it's mine. LOL
Zhao Pan’er: You’re taking advantage of me, Gu Qian Fan.
Gu Qian Fan (baffles): I’m suddenly a father. Isn’t it you who’s taking advantage of me?
Zhao Pan’er: I’m saving you!
Gu Qian Fan: Wasn’t it I who saved your friend first?
She’s speechless. And he's still mischievous :D. Her comeback is interrupted when Sun San Niang wakes up. She was divorced by her husband and abandoned by her son. Her sob story is ridiculous. She committed suicide. They bring her to an island to see a doctor. Although Gu Qian Fan's posters are plastered all over this island too, he insists on going with Zhao Pan'er. After all, he’s the man she’s eloping with. Hehe. And they are caught! He tells her to run while he stays behind to beat down the guards. She gets going.
Oh, but she turns back! She saves him by pulling him up from a cliff. He lands on top of her and doesn’t move. It’s not that he won’t move, it’s that he can’t move. He used up his energy! But he can stand on his own later on. Totally taking advantage

Our trio hide in an inn. Gu Qian Fan uses a torture method to wake Sun San Niang (I assume when criminals are dying, and he’s not done torturing, he’d bring them back with the needle to torture them some more). Zhao Pan’er thanks him. He scoffs. He’s never been thanked for that move. She makes him tea and orders him to come over. Our commander is amused. He has never been commanded like that. “Dare order me? Beware I’ll torture you.” At this moment, Sun San Niang regains full consciousness and whacks him to make him faint. LOL. I think her tea is lethal. Zhao Pan’er convinces Sun San Niang to believe in Gu Qian Fan. She had hated him, but through their time together, she knows he’s a good person. Gu Qian Fan wakes in time to hear it. A little illogical here with the conversation. Sun San Niang says she trusts Zhao Pan’er's judgment when a) she said she misjudged Zheng Qing Tian, b) she said she initially misjudged Gu Qian Fan, and c) she is potentially misjudging Ouyang Xu. Where is her credibility?

Song Yin Zhang is tortured by Zhou She, who married her for money. Zhao Pan’er begs Gu Qian Fan for his gold bars to save Song Yin Zhang. He reminds her that if she stays here, she won’t make it in time to stop Ouyang Xu from marrying. She knows. Song Yin Zhang is more important, though. She makes a deal with Gu Qian Fan for his gold: the real painting (The Night Revel) is with her.

[Ep4] Zhao Pan’er was the one who gave Yang the fake painting because he wanted her real one. Gu Qian Fan can’t give the gold bar (it’s his ID) and so he gives her the jade his father left him. He also warns her to never let anyone know she has the painting for her safety. (Neither does he ask for the location of it). And so, here is where they depart. She asks how to return the money. He gives her a location and if there is a red banner there, then someone will bring her to him. If she doesn’t see the flag, the money doesn’t need to be returned because he'll be dead

Our leads are on their own mission. Zhao Pan’er not only wants to save Song Yin Zhang, but also seek revenge on Zhou She. Gu Qian Fan suspects Lei Jing (boss) and Yu Zhong Quan (colleague) wanted his life. Then he visits his friend, whom he trusts with his life, for help and this friend poisons him. Mr. Gu, your interpersonal skills seem to be lacking

[Ep5] Gu Qian Fan wasn’t poisoned! He faked it and defeats all the men, leaving his buddy last. His buddy’s family is being threatened. He has to obey the orders to kill Gu Qian Fan. Ou, I kinda like the fight. Looks like Chen Xiao did all (or most) of it. Gu Qian Fan kills his buddy.
He cleans her hand
After seducing Zhou She, Zhao Pan’er finds herself disgusting. She compulsively washes her face. Gu Qian Fan was watching. He helps her gently wash her hands and tells her it’s clean. In his eyes, she was never dirty.
She treats his hand (injury)
Zhao Pan’er notices the injury on Gu Qian Fan’s hand. She treats it and wraps it with her handkerchief. He tells her he killed a friend today. She listens to his story and comforts him that his friend deserved death. He’s relaxed and wonders why she was never afraid of him. Because in her eyes, he's a good person. She swears she’s not lying or he can kill her. Gu Qian Fan teases, “I’m not willing to part with you.”

I really like this scene. Both of them find themselves tainted, particularly their hands. Both are cleansing each other’s hands, but really, they’re curing the wounds in their hearts.

They drink together. Oh look, they’re holding it with their thumb and middle finger. Gamblers identified.
So many hand moments.
Gao Qian Fan leaves to continue his investigation. She wishes him farewell, but is sure they'll meet again soon and maybe he could be her support if she ever messes up. She even winks at him. Later she jokes that she may not return his money. That doesn’t matter to him. She can 以身相許. It’s a very common reply that if someone owes another person money and they can’t pay it back, then they 以身相許 = (1) devote their lives to that person as a repayment. It can be taken literally as (2) paying with her body (i.e. being his wife). They’re both awkward as they’re thinking about that 2nd meaning. He apologizes for the bad joke, but Zhao Pan’er is chill. They’re friends. She reaches her hand out (for a handshake?? What century am I in?).

Zhao Pan'er: To meet in passing but be like old friend (傾蓋如故).
Gu Qian Fan (lightly smacks her hand): To be old and still be like new (白頭如新). The saying that I’m used to that starts with 白頭 is 白頭偕老 which means to be together until old age (for married couples)
As he’s departing on the paddle boat, they’re staring at each other. His eyes are fluttering back and forth, but her eyes are fixed on him. I like how his eyes wander. It’s like he’s mesmerized by her but he’s also shy. Contrastingly, her eyes aren't wandering. I think it speaks to the purity of her heart. At this moment, she thinks her feelings for him are platonic.

Zhao Pan’er fools Zhou She into divorcing Song Yin Zhang and giving her his house deed. But then he catches the girls and sues her in court.

[Ep6] Zhao Pan’er has a strong case. Every evidence is in her favour but the judge is morally deaf and blind, and a misogynist. It’s Zhao Pan’er who’s punished for demanding justice. Then someone covers her with an umbrella. It’s Gu Qian Fan! Oh wait. She wished it was him. It’s Chen Lian (the lackey Gu Qian Fan picked up). She’s thinking of him (instead of her Ouyang). Chen Lian brought a higher ranking judge (Xu Zhi Zhou) to oversee the case and that’s how justice is delivered. While everyone is celebrating, Zhao Pan'er searches the crowd. Her intuition tells her Gu Qian Fan is the one who helped her. She’s right. She finds him.

Song Yin Zhang falls in love with Gu Qian Fan after he makes a gravity-defying kick at an impossible angle from where he jumped.
Gu Qian Fan prepares a carriage for Zhao Pan’er to leave for the Eastern Capital. He warns her that in the capital, her wits aren’t enough to navigate the officialdom there. He’s worried for her. She’s wary too (after what happened today), but she can solve it on her own. At the same time she’s confused about his actions. He’s helping her to get there, but his words are harsh. Does he want her to go or does he want her to stay? Stay. He smiles gently, “I’m just afraid you’ll regret it.” She won’t. I love the timing of their smiles. He knew her answer the moment he said his line. She smiles with him, knowing that he knows her answer too

Zhao Pan’er doesn’t want to owe Gu Qian Fan too much. She doesn’t even know how to repay him for the previous favours. Gu Qian Fan snaps, “Did I ask you to repay me?” <3. To her though, whether or not he asked for it, she will give it all back. He nods resignedly and adds lightly that he expects interest.
She asks if he’s going to the capital too, but he tells her it’s none of her business. He also returns the handkerchief to her. *Snap*. The sound of their relationship. She stares at the handkerchief and purses her lips. She chases after him, perhaps sensing his withdrawal from her, but he’s gone, nowhere in sight.

Gu Qian Fan was able to save Zhao Pan’er from the judge, and himself from being murdered because he asked his father for help. He's Xiao Qin Yan,  a prime minister (candidate). He’s powerful enough to make Zheng Qian Tian commit suicide. But Gu Qian Fan is standoffish with his father. It’s pretty obvious they’re not on good terms when Gu Qian Fan doesn’t even take his father’s surname. Which means he is a Xiao and Zhao Pan’er got it right when she lied about being pregnant. He believes his father cheated with a musical performer/prostitute. Xiao Qin Yan exclaims that he's innocent. How could he be interested in a lowly prostitute? And now that they’re talking about prostitutes, Xiao Qin Yan demands that his son can never marry Zhao Pan’er. Gu Qian Fan bellows at his father that just because he owes him, it doesn’t mean he can control his marriage.

The reaction of the father from being yelled at by his son is euphoria. He’s laughing! He’s excited! His son, who was always courteous, actually lost his temper for the very first time. And it’s for Zhao Pan’er

Zhao Pan’er is reunited with Ouyang Xu. They hug. He promises to marry her but it must be half a year after he marries Gao Family’s daughter. Seeing Zhao Pan'er hug Ouyang is awkward. It made me realize how I would have preferred her romance with the Gu Qian Fan to develop after she cleanly ended her relationship with her ex. I guess ML’s attraction is just that strong, eh

[Ep7] Ouyang Xu knows that Zhao Pan’er is kind and gentle. She won’t mind being a concubine right? She won’t stain his career with her poor background, right? She won’t mind that her child will have to call another woman mother, right? Zhao Pan’er strips her hand from his. Is he overestimating himself or underestimating her? Zhao Pan’er will never be a concubine. She holds back her tears and walks away, keeping her composure when her heart is breaking. Eventually, she faints. In her sleep, she remembers Gu Qian Fan’s words that some people cave into temptation.

Du Chang Feng visits Zhao Pan’er on behalf of Ouyang Xu. This Ming Lan actor is called ‘Chang Feng’ again! He’s a misogynist (which I think it’s normal at that time). He lectures her that she should know she’s at the bottom of the barrel. How can she expect to be Ouyang Xu’s wife? She should be grateful she can even be a concubine. Sun San Niang throws him into the water.

[Ep8] Ouyang Xu knew his words (last episode) would anger Zhao Pan’er, but it was to protect her from Gao Family (and his jealous fiancée Gao Hui), which is why he’s grateful for his buddy, Du Chang Feng, in angering her even more.

Gu Qian Fan knows his father (Xiao Qin Yan) acquitted Lei Jing of his crimes because he (Xiao) wants to garner his (Lei) support in the palace. Meanwhile the father doesn’t know why the son would insist on working at the Capital Security Office.

Zhao Pan’er makes three requests from Ouyang Xu for his unfaithfulness. He easily promises, but three days later, he cannot deliver on any of them: 1) he can’t write her a divorce letter; 2) he can’t request an amnesty for Song Yin Zhang; 3) he lost the The Night Revel painting. He listens to Uncle De and avoids Zhao Pan’er. Uncle De even hires He Si’s men to attack the girls. But Zhao Pan’er freezes He Si's ‘fertility pulse’ and now the men obey her orders. They station outside, hollering at cowardly Ouyang Xu to come out.

[Ep9] He Si and his men are still chanting outside. Useless Ouyang Xu criticizes Uncle De for being useless. So stop listening to him???  The men actually work for Chi Ya Nei, but since he lost to a piece of tofu and some dice, his men will continue to work for Zhao Pan Er.

Zhao Pan’er checks everyday to see if there’s a red banner, the signal that Gu Qian Fan is back. She wishes he were here. She’s actually scared, but pretends to be strong in front of the girls and Ouyang. If Gu Qian Fan was here, he’d be harsh, but he’d say the unvarnished truth and it’s what she wants to hear.
[Ep10] Song Yin Zhang meets Zhang Hao Hao (best singer in the city). The top girls have met! Rivalry! No – they make a beautiful duet. One plays pipa and the other sings. Unlike Song Yin Zhang, Zhang Hao Hao is proud of her occupation. They’re making money with their abilities. What’s there to be ashamed of? I agree with her until she says that they’re not like those regular prostitutes selling their bodies. How can she, in a similar fate, look down on women that she thinks are of lower class? How is that different from noblewoman looking down on them (‘musical prostitutes’)? How is that different from sexist men looking down on women? It’s just another form of discrimination and the same shit.

Ouyang Xu sends Uncle De to bring government thugs to disband the crowd in front of his home. They beat the girls up. Then Ouyang Xu, the wimp, has the courage to step out and pretend to be the nice guy. Oh, puke.

The girls are sent out of the city in humiliation. Peasants are throwing cabbages, eggs, and rocks at them. But Gu Qian Fan is here to help the girls! Zhao Pan’er was right about him. His words are harsh, but he says the words to motivate her. He brings them back and punishes the official who illegally banished her from the city.
Gu Qian Fan treats (only) Zhao Pan’er's wounds. So gentle! The hand on the nape of her neck! The tension. Just kiss her already. That’s not all, he also wants to check on her shoulder injury (that he inflicted on her). San Niang accidentally spots them and is in shock that he’s trying to undress her top. Zhao Pan’er stops him. He insists on checking and reminds her that she changed his clothes too. She argues that it’s different. He was unconscious. Ah, so does that mean he can de-cloth her if he makes her faint? Lol. For him, it’s really no big deal. He's used to seeing naked bodies. It’s how he tortures people, sex is immaterial. Romantic isn’t it? To be compared to his tortured prisoners and that her sex doesn’t matter.

[Ep11] Zhao Pan’er gives Ouyang Xu three days to return the painting. She brings Chen Lian to scare them. Oh, and Chen Lian ‘internally’ beats up Uncle De so that he will require two years of recovery. Nice. Ouyang Xu is quaking in his pants that he volunteers to be a gong guan guan. A Taoist Temple Official. By choosing this career, he gets to leave the city and away from Zhao Pan’er. But he also single-handedly ruined career prospects. He thinks he’s even with Zhao Pan’er. She can’t get her painting and he gave up his career and marriage. What did our FL see in him?!?! And now he’s acting pitiful in front of Gao Hui (who still loves him). What does anyone see in him?

The ladies decide to open a teahouse.

[Ep12] Zhao Pan’er won’t accept Gu Qian Fan’s money. He’s disappointed at how she’s so determined to not owe him a penny. He’s the guy who wants her to owe him. She's the girl who doesn’t want to owe him (in particular). Both out of love ~

Gu Qian Fan is an undercover agent for Qi Mu, investigating Lei Jing (and his collusions with Jiangnan). Eventually, he is to take down his father too (??).

Gu Qian Fan is worried for Zhao Pan’er for being so bold in opening a teahouse after she kicked out Ouyang Xu. The dude kicked himself out. He’s checking every corner to see if there’s anything suspicious. Isn’t she afraid of Gao Family? Zhao Pan’er doesn’t want to hide forever. She needs to earn money too. She can’t depend on him forever. Gu Qian Fan is frustrated. Since when has he ever turned her down?

Zhao Pan’er: Asking you for money once or twice, you’re still willing to help but what about ten times? One hundred times?
Gu Qian Fan (vexed): Thousand, ten thousand, million times, I’m willing.

Chen Lian excuses himself. He’s getting goosebumps from their flirting, lol. Zhao Pan’er explains to Gu Qian Fan that she wants a storefront so that when Ouyang Xu is back, he’ll have to face her. And plus, she needs the painting back. Gu Qian Fan doesn’t think the painting is comparable to her safety. He’s busier now and he can’t always protect her. But Zhao Pan’er doesn’t need ‘other’ people protecting her. He’s offended. Is he “other” people now? She clarifies he’s not. I think he liked that. They make a bet that if she earns a profit in a month, she can continue operating her teahouse.

Finally, Gu Qian Fan can sit down for tea prepared by Zhao Pan’er. He remembers the time she tried poisoning him. She says he deserved it. He argues that she wasn’t much better – using sophistry and being overly self-righteous. Zhao Pan’er’s eyes widened. And then their flirting is interrupted by Song Yin Zhang who thinks they’re arguing. And once again he doesn’t drink the tea. Song Yin Zhang says everything is her fault. Gu Qian Fan is confused as he tells her, “Don’t take everything upon yourself.” Because girl, it has nothing to do with you.  Then Gu Qian Fan gives ‘her’ advice: she may be weak, but if she wants to start a business here, then learn more, put in more effort, and take care of herself; be stronger so that the next time there’s another Ouyang, she won't wallow in her uselessness. It’s a thoughtful advice for Zhao Pan’er ~

Delusional Song Yin Zhang takes the advice, thinking it was for her. She will earn money with her pipa at the performance house. She wants to be strong enough to protect her sisters. She also meets Shen Ru Zhuo who seems smitten with her.

[Ep13] Zhao Pan’er’s teahouse is swatting flies. Not a human in sight. Oh wait, there’s one: Gu Qian Fan. But he’s the Living King of Hell. Zhao Pan’er blames him for scaring her customers. She’s joking. She knows she chose the wrong location. She admits to him that towards “other” people she can say it’s alright, she just tripped, fell, but she’ll stand up again. But she can’t lie to herself. And him! Because he’s not “other” people. It’s upsetting. It’s like her heart is torn apart and held together by only glue.

Gu Qian Fan empathizes with her pain. He’s just coming back from torturing a prisoner, and previously, he was betrayed by his best friend and had to kill him. She asks him if it was painful. He says his sword was fast. It shouldn’t be. She meant if it was painful for him. Gu Qian Fan pauses and takes a look at her. His eyes flicker. A smile peeps through. He takes a step back and changes his posture. Gu Qian Fan, even if you distance yourself and cross your arms, your heart is transparent to her :D (I am loving Chen Xiao’s body language!). Now he’s curious. What kind of person is he in her heart? She thinks they’re alike. Clear on their principles. He’s heroic but also petty. He’s silly but smart. He also doesn’t need to care about what other people think of him. Except what she thinks of him. He asks if she’s comforting him. She’s not. Pitiful people need comforting. He’s a hero. He doesn’t need pitying.

But how can the Living King of Hell be a hero? Gu Qian Fan says he's a 鷹犬爪牙. 鷹犬 (ying quan) = literal: hawks and hounds; figurative: hired thugs. 爪牙(zhao ya) = literal: claws and teeth; figurative: accomplice. Zhao Pan'er enlightens him with a new perspective. He’s the country’s hawks and hounds. He’s the people’s claws and teeth. He is protecting the nation. Gu Qian Fan was frowning all day from torturing a prisoner. But look how easy she makes him smile
For such adorning flattery that warmed him heart, he offers to extend their deal to two months. She laughs. She doesn’t need it. In one month, she will make him line up for her tea. He laughs too, and when he looks up to see her smiling at him, he’s shy! Is my Chen Xiao Gu Qian Fan twirling around a pole because he can’t hide his smile!! 😍

Song Yin Zhang interrupts. Someone save her from her delusion please. As she’s chatting with Gu Qian Fan, Zhao Pan’er leaves to prepare tea. Once it’s ready, she signals Gu Qian Fan to sit down for some. He picks up the cup, and voila, another interruption. It’s Sun San Niang who accuses him of sabotaging their business. Bye tea.

Other happenings
→ Gu Qian Fan is protective of Chen Lian and doesn’t allow him to torture the prisoner.
→ The prisoner is from West Xia and part of an organization to incite war between Da Song (this nation) and the People of Liao.

[Ep14] The teahouse business has picked up. Zhao Pan’er is tactically pricing her products significantly higher to exploit the buyers' perception that expensive items are exceptional in quality (ie. skim pricing). She’s also creating a sense of exclusivity by limiting the number of desserts available to 10 with premium pricing at 250 tael. And those who buy it are 250 (= stupid in Chinese). Zhao Pan’er is also collaborating with Zhang Hao Hao and so we’ve got a celebrity endorsement too.

Gu Qian Fan, the gentleman, helps Zhao Pan'er carry her box back home. What wind brought him here? An ominous wind. He’s here to warn her to lay it low. She’s piqued and asks if he’s got nothing to do but follow her around. She’s upset because she’s happy about her fledgling business but the person she wants to share her happiness with isn’t happy for her.  She directly tells him off, “You care but pretend not to care, lecturing me with a stern face”. He counters that it would be bad if he were to smile. “Haven’t you heard of the saying, ‘Rather see the King of Hell’s wrath, than see the King of Hell's smile?” He’s joking with her, but she’s still mad. She retorts, “Who was it that once he heard Living King of Hell, his face furrowed together, eyes were not eyes, and brows were not brows.” And then she stalks off.

A petal has fallen on Zhao Pan’er’s hair. He looks at her and smiles to himself. He keeps her still as he fixes her hair. He’s so gentle and loving, that Zhao Pan’er almost asks him if he likes her. She was this close to saying it, but stops herself, and enters the teahouse. I think he knows what she wanted to ask, but he’s not finishing the question for her. Gu Qian Fan starts a random conversation and reminds her she hasn’t sent any desserts to his place yet. Then he says it’s not him who likes sweets. It’s his teacher. Me tutting. He shouldn’t have said that last part. Zhao Pan’er understands. She’ll make them tomorrow. She walks up to him to take the box from him and curtly leaves. I figured that if hadn’t added the part about his teacher, he could have still carried the box and had an excuse to enter the teahouse. But now that she took it from his hands, he has to leave. But Gu Qian Fan doesn’t want to leave yet! Reluctantly, he tells her another piece of news: Ouyang has safely arrived at West City. Dude. This is how you fail. That pretty much ends their conversation.

At night, San Niang notices Zhao Pan’er is crestfallen even when they made a profit. Zhao Pan’er cries to her,  “I think I might like [Gu Qian Fan] a little.” But she knows their relationship is based on Ouyang and the painting. Hence why she was upset when Gu Qian Fan brought up Ouyang. To her, he drew a line between them. San Niang is certain that Gu Qian Fan likes Zhao Pan’er. She thinks so too, but she also believes he doesn’t like her that much. He makes her heart flutter, but then acts as if nothing happened. He’s close but far, cold and hot. He keeps her hanging. Zhao Pan’er tells herself she has to be self-aware, especially when she was betrayed by Ouyang. She can feel that if he beckons her over, she’d run to him, but she’s afraid he’ll tell her that it was all because he pitied her. She really doesn't like being pitied eh. This is why she can’t rely on him. She must earn money. She must clear their debt. She can’t let him look down on her.

Yu Zhong Quan colludes with Xiao Wei (Gu Qian Fan’s younger half-brother). The former wants the latter to deceive Lei Jing that Gu Qian Fan no longer has the favour of their Xiao Qin Yan. Meanwhile Yu Zhong Quan barges into the teahouse to arrest Zhao Pan’er for espionage on the orders of the Capital Security Office.

[Ep15] Although Zhao Pan’er is arrested, she was prepared. She knew Yu Zhong Quan switched her ledger when the hair she meticulously placed between the pages disappeared. The idiotic Yu Zhong Quan actually slips up and admits it. The other guards are confused. Yu Zhong Quan is so livid, he dunks her in water. If I were him, I’d kill her on the spot. What does making her wet do anything for him? The guards finally stop him when Zhao Pan’er reminds them of Gu Qian Fan. Then Yu Zhong Qian finally takes a sword to kill her. A dagger flies through and strikes him, though. It’s Chen Lian, and behind him is Gu Qian Fan. He’s in agony and in fury when he sees her (half) wet. However, Gu Qian Fan pretends he doesn’t know her. He’s keeping her safe. Zhao Pan’er is disappointed. She leaves and flinches in pain (of what? The water? Lol).

Gu Qian Fan meets with Zhao Pan’er alone. He’s not speaking. She explains how she used a dog to sniff the ledger, which led her to Xiao Manor. From there, she knew the people targeting her were after  him and so she informed Chen Lian ahead of time. But this isn’t what Gu Qian Fan wanted to hear. Who gave her the courage to handle this all on her own? If he was one second late, she would have been fully drenched. Water shalt not hurt his woman! She angrily snaps, “You said you didn’t know me so how does my life and death matter to you?” He’s angered at how she can’t tell he was protecting her. Me too! If his enemies knew that she was his “lethal point”, his vulnerability, what would happen to her? What would happen to them?

Zhao Pan’er cries after hearing that confession. She didn’t even cry when she was tortured (by water). However, she’s too self-conscious. Did he forget she was a salve (a musical prostitute)? Gu Qian Fan can’t answer and so she tells him to leave. She doesn’t want him rousing her if he hasn’t thought of their future. Even the scene of her closing the door on him was romantic. The windows are still open! Gu Qian Fan promises that he will seriously contemplate her question and give an answer. For the next few days, Chen Lian will protect her.
San Niang is angry at Zhao Pan’er for the same reason Gu Qian Fan is. Why face everything alone? Zhao Pan’er cries some more. It’s not that she can’t depend on them. She always felt inferior because of her identity. Perhaps because of that she wants to do everything well on her own.

Other happenings
→ Shen Ru Zhuo looks like a keeper.
→ Chi Ya Nei is jealous that his people are helping Zhao Pan’er, including Zhao Hao Hao. Are they going to be a couple?
→ Gu Qian Fan pressures Lei Jing to execute Yu Zhong Quan by letting him bleed to death.
→ Gu Qian Fan informs Xiao Qin Yan who then reprimands Xiao Wei.

[Ep16] Zhao Pan’er isn’t worried about the imitation. Their own desserts taste better. Their musician is the best. Also, it’s a good thing their competitor is more affordable. It’s a free promotion. Customers will know that our ladies offer quality at a premium price. This upsets the restaurant union, men. These bosses accuse the ladies of relying on sexual appeal that these sorry men will never have.  Zhao Pan’er reminds them that they copied her so-called dirty tactics. And so how do we settle this dispute? A tea competition. Okay? It’s the drama's excuse to have Zhao Pan’er perform tea dance, tea music and tea art. Gu Qian Fan is mesmerized.  Liu Yi Fei does move lucidly. I don’t think a lot of actresses can be like her. She wins. The boss accepts his defeat. Her tea is indeed unique.

Du Cheng Fang, who’s almost blind, thinks San Niang is a virtuous lady. Shouldn’t the flour stay in the kitchen? Teahouse is so unique, it’s serving flour too, I guess.

Zhao Pan’er dances at home. Gu Qian Fan is her one and only audience, and he’s still dazzled.

[Ep17] Gu Qian Fan confesses to Zhao Pan'er! He likes her, he wants to marry her and he wants to grow old with her until their hair is white (白頭偕老). She calls him crazy. Did he not see how she was dancing? Did he not see how she seduced Zhou Shen? Did he forget she was a slave, a musical prostitute. By tomorrow, the entire city will know because of the competition today. Gu Qian Fan doesn’t care. “I want to marry you. Not other people.” He admits he’s slow when it comes to love, but once he makes a decision, he’s just like her, he won’t regret it. Neither does he care about her status. It’s a confession that checks all the right boxes for her
Gu Qian Fan plucks a flower from her garden as a symbol of his promise to marry her. Zhao Pan’er accepts the flower.
Gu Qian Fan spins her around. Zhao Pan'er giggles, asking to be let down. He won’t. He wants her to call his name. She does, but he shakes his head. Quieter, she tries again without his surname, “Qian Fan.” He settles her down, but she’s still in his arms. They hug with his lips resting on her neck.

Shen Ru Zhuo flirts with Song Yin Zhang. She’s annoyed and tells him she's divorced but she has nothing to be ashamed of. She’s earning her own money. Ah, but he already knew. It’s her music that speaks to his heart. Not her beauty. When he learned of her past, he was moved by her even more. He’s saving her from her delusions! *Big hug!*
Gu Qian Fan and Zhao Pan’er are on a date! Loving the way he stares at her. He makes a happy sigh. Just last night, she was rushing him out; her “eyebrows were not eyebrows, eyes were not eyes,” and today she’s relaxed. Zhao Pan'er admits she was startled by his confession but realizes she isn’t suffering any losses in dating him. He’s good looking. It’s his turn to be startled. “Only good looking?!” But this only good looking man is serious. He promises he won’t be an Ouyang Xu #2. He will always protect her and love her.

Too bad this secret date isn’t very secretive. Lei Jing, Xiao Wei, Qi Mu have nothing to do and take turns to visit Gu Qian Fan. With Lei Jing, Gu Qian Fan says he isn’t serious about Zhao Pan’er. She hears it and believes it. Ugh. The overhearing trope. With Xiao Wei, Gu Qian Fan says she isn’t his wife. She’s right there. To Zhao Pan’er, Gu Qian Fan is looking like another Ouyang Xu. Then when Gu Qian Fan wants to catch up to Zhao Pan’er, who has left, Qi Mu (of Qing Luo party) wants a chat with him. He’s unhappy that Gu Qian Fan is only giving him evidence of Lei Jing’s crimes. Their real enemy is Xiao Qing Yan.

[Ep18] Zhao Pan’er almost became Ouyang Xu’s mother-in-law! She was confronting Gao Hu (Gao Hui’s father) about his nanny’s misconduct at her teahouse. Gao Hu was so infatuated with her, he was physically trembling (???). Good thing Gu Qian Fan is in the area and she becomes his ‘wife’ to avoid being her ex's ‘mother-in-law’. Afterwards, Gu Qian Fan lectures her.  She should consider herself lucky that Gao Hu was only lustful and not murderous. What if he drowned her in a river? “What if you became a water ghost, what shall I do in the future? Gu Zhao shi (顧趙氏).” He’s putting their last names together under the same clan (氏) => marriage. Zhao Pan’er is moved, but stays rational. She won’t be his concubine. He agrees. He wants her as his wife. He also understands why she was mad and clarifies the understanding with Lei Jing. All thanks to Chen Lian! Atta boy! Gu Qian Fan is aware that she’s been scorned by another man and doesn’t have confidence in him. It was just one little problem and she suffocates herself with it. He tells her that no one looks down on her except herself. Zhao Pan'er cries. Harsh, but true. He also knows no matter what he says right now, she won’t believe him. He gives her all his assets: three deeds, and four keys. Are we missing a deed or what? He also gives her time to accept him as he grumpily tells her, “I can wait!”

Zhao Pan’er runs after him and trips. She twists her ankle. He runs back to check on her, until he realizes she’s faking it. “Next time, when you fake it, at least try.” Zhao Pan’er stands up and shamelessly walks with ease. “As long as it works on you, it’s fine.” He smiles. It worked! They communicate properly now. Gu Qian Fan surmises that he fell in love with her that night they tended to each other’s hands. I think he already liked her at the teahouse (Ep1). Then when he saw her safe in the prison, he wanted to marry her and protect her. She’s concerned about his reputation, though. He reminds her that his reputation isn’t any better. He's the Living King of Hell working for CSO. She gives him a reassuring squeeze on the shoulder. He takes her hand in both of his. “This time you initiated.” She did and here’s her answer: “If lord doesn’t forsaken me. I will not forsaken lord.”
Gu Qian Fan can’t tell her about his family yet, but explains his choice of occupation. Promotion at CSO is easier. He needs to be at least 5th rank to confer a posthumous title to his mother because she is divorced. Zhao Pan’er asks to meet his mother. He’s like The ugly daughter-in-law wants to see the parent-in-law now? It’s a Chinese saying (醜媳婦早晚也得見公婆), which means the ugly DIL must sooner or later meet her parent-in-laws. Figuratively: it’s something you cannot avoid forever. Zhao Pan’er takes it literally, “Who’s ugly?” Gu Qian Fan laughs, “I’m ugly.” Chen Lian interrupts. The only interruption I welcome from. He teases Gu Qian Fan that normally he can sense him 10m away, but today, it’s like he’s deaf and blind.

At night, Gu Qian Fan startles Zhao Pan’er. She jumps and twirls right into his arms. He swiftly kisses her. It’s the courage he needs to make a confession: he was engaged.

Other happenings:
Gao Hui learns of Ouyang Xu’s previous engagement with Zhao Pan’er.
→ Ge Zhao Di works for the three ladies at the teahouse. She’s clever. But how come she knows how to write? Isn’t she homeless?

[Ep19] Gu Qian Fan was engaged but it was cancelled before he even saw the girl because he applied to be in CSO (= committing career suicide). To his surprise, Zhao Pan’er giggles. They’re even now (but not really because he never had another woman). She tells him more about her past too (when he didn’t ask) because she doesn’t want them to suspect each other. She kisses him. Sensual! But why is this scene so fast!! I feel cheated D: All we get are fishies twirling around each other D: Then they sit on the porch. After he kissed her neck like that, they sit outside????? He gives her a hairpin. It’s the one he bought at the market with her. She teases him that he’s been harbouring inappropriate thoughts since then. He offers to be sued. For stealing her heart. He’s liable for mine too!
Gu Qian Fan and Zhao Pan’er have another date, this time on a boat in the middle of the lake. She asks if they do marry, can she still have her business. I really like how he replied by asking her first if she was happy. For him, as long as she’s happy, she can do whatever she wants. And he corrects her: it’s not “if” they will marry. He will definitely marry her. Zhao Pan’er confesses to him for the first time: “Gu Qian Fan, I like you.” She kisses him.

Gu Qian Fan and Zhao Pan’er are the gooey couple. They can’t say goodbye without hugging, kissing, walking each other back and forth, and the classic you-go-first-no-you-go-first-no-you-go-first. It’s Zhao Pan’er who watches him leave.

Gu Qian Fan is assigned to investigate a Hat Phantom haunting the streets. Dangerous missions are typical for him, but now it’s different. There’s someone he cares about waiting for him and someone who will call him “Qian Fan.” Zhao Pan’er is comforted to know he’s safe, but finds it peculiar that he’s particularly gentle tonight. She asks him if there’s something bothering him and then realizes he hasn’t eaten yet. When she gives him food, he compliments how warm and good it is. She calls his flattery a reach when it’s only May. It’s not even cold. What’s bothering him wasn’t his hunger, but the void and bitterness in his heart from his parents’ death/abandonment. She is warming up and filling his heart. He tells her to come closer to tell her something, and surprises her with a kiss on the cheek.

The rise of Hat Phantom is related to the Empress. She is overseeing the palace since the Emperor is sick and the Crown Prince (who is not her son) is only 12. There are opposing forces against the Empress (and at this time, Xiao Qin Yan will soon be inaugurated as the prime minister). Zhao Pan’er asks if it’s related to The Night Revels.
Other happenings
Gao Hui is ready to confront Zhao Pan’er! But she befriends her over menstrual cramps and has yet to know she’s her love rival.
Ge Zhao Di might just be falling in love with the ‘dashing’ Chen Lian.

[Ep20] Gu Qian Fan tells Zhao Pan’er a ‘story’. It’s about a poor girl who worked as a musical performer to earn money. A lord fell in love with her and faked a reputable maiden identity to marry her. Soon, she became the legitimate wife. There is this painting that’s totally not The Night Revels that has her appearance and name to prove her real identity. He tells her this is only a story and totally not the real biography of our Empress. And this is totally not related to the Hat Phantom that’s haunting the city and murdering innocent civilians. Got it?

Gu Qian Fan brings Zhao Pan’er dessert as repayment for the food she gave him. It’s her favourite red bean flavour. He knows because when they were on the ship, all the food she packed was this flavour. She calls him a petty thief. He’s witty and replies that naturally, he has to ‘imitate the dog and steal the chicken’ otherwise, how can they marry*? A Chinese lesson by yours truly, an unqualified teacher. Zhao Pan’er uses the figurative meaning of 偷雞摸狗 which is ‘petty thief’ whereas Gu Qian Fan uses the same idiom, but the literal meaning (to imitate the dog and steal the chicken) in order to connect it to another idiom’s figurative meaning: 嫁雞隨雞,嫁狗隨狗. *If you marry a chicken follow the chicken, if you marry a dog follow the dog
These two can’t say goodbye without kissing. Look at his eyes!

Gu Qian Fan and Zhao Pan’er have a flower language. If there’s a red flower at the door, then it means he’s safe. If there’s a yellow flower, it means he misses her. Today there’s a yellow flower. They meet. She tells him how Du Chang Feng warned her of Gao Family. Gu Qian Fan is happy she’s willing to share her problems with him now. There’s more: she wants his help. She needs to show him off to Gao Hui so that she knows how her boyfriend is better than Ouyang Xu a thousand times. But tomorrow night he has plans.

Other happenings
→ Ouyang Xu is suffering. He yearns to marry Gao Hui to restore his position. Gao Hui seems like a  decent girl (when her nanny isn’t around). Please don’t marry this trash
→ Song Yin Zhang seems to be slowly falling in love with Shen Ru Zhuo.
→ Du Chang Feng realizes the virtuous lady he fell in love with is the one he called a shrew. Meanwhile, San Niang cries. She misses her son. Du Chang Feng warns the ladies to be careful of Gao family. Zhao Pan’er realizes Ouyang Xu was trying to protect her.

[Ep21] Gu Qian Fan has dinner with his father. Xiao Qin Yan is affectionate towards his son, but this isn’t purely a father-son reunion. He wants Gu Qian Fan to help him in the palace. Gu Qian Fan won’t, but he won’t sabotage him either. He warns him that the Hat Phantom is targeting him (because the Emperor is superstitious). The father is touched that his son is caring about him. Gu Qian Fan explains that’s not the case. His main purpose here tonight is to receive his blessings for his marriage with Zhao Pan’er. For all these years, Zhao Pan’er was the first and only light and hope he saw. She's beyond precious to him. Gu Qian Fan hopes that there will be a day he can bring his child with Zhao Pan’er to meet his grandfather (Xiao). After Gu Qian Fan leaves, Xiao Qin Yan solemnly speaks to himself as if his (ex)wife is there. He hopes the grandchild will be more like himself. This means Gu Qian Fan took after his mother.

Zhao Pan’er irons out the wrinkles with Gao Hui. Only one wrinkle actually: Ouyang Xu. Gao Hui learns he lied that she was his one and only woman. Her father knew and was protecting her. The father and daughter make up. It seems Zhao Pan’er will have a new friend in the city (Gao Hui). I like how once Gao Hu (the pervert!) appears, Gu Qian Fan is standing in front of Zhao Pan’er. Our engaged couple leave Gao Manor (look at how they naturally hold hands when she’s taking the steps). Gu Qian Fan compliments Zhao Pan’er for hiding behind him when Gao Hu appeared. Oh, they were on the same page, lol.  Zhao Pan’er notes that Gao Hu might be a creep, but he is a good father. Gu Qian Fan is reminded of his own father (who’s not a creep).

Zhao Pan’er meets Gu Qian Fan’s late mother at her grave. Now that she met his parents, she asks him when they’re getting married. Not yet. He wants to propose in front of her parents too. They’re buried in Qiantang. She’s touched that he’s so considerate. But he also tells her there are secrets (including his father) that he can’t tell her yet.

An episode of parents

Other happenings
→ Fu Zi Fang (Sun San Niang’s son) is in the city, looking like he was starved for days with those plump cheeks. He spills details of Ouyang Xu and Zhao Pan’er to the guards.
→ Sun San Niang gives Du Chang Feng desserts (via Chen Lian) to thank him for notifying them of Gao Family. Then we learn Du Chang Feng is only a teacher despite scoring well. It’s because he farted in front of the Emperor. Now the kids that he teaches bullies him.
→ Chen Lian protects his manhood upon seeing Ge Zhao Di. When she’s gentler towards him, he gets a chance to ask about her family and why she treats her mother so harshly.
→ Song Yin Zhang and Shen Ru Zhuo have a date. She’s wary of him because she doesn’t want a Zhou Shen #2.
[Ep22] Zhao Pan’er will patiently wait for the day Gu Qian Fan is ready to tell her. After she said that, it seems he's even more in love with her. Then petals fall. Gu Qian Fan planned the romantic event for her with the help of our trusty Chen Lian! In an interview, Chen Xiao says this was his most memorable scene. They filmed this on the third day. He also said that Liu Yi Fei from very early on, earlier than him, was already in her character

Chi Ya Nei and Gu Qian Fan grew up together (fighting) as neighbours. In the middle of their altercation, Chi Ya Nei pulls off Zhao Pan’er’s shoes (this guy even bites) and throws it in the river. Well well well, this gives Gu Qian Fan a chance to carry Zhao Pan’er to buy new shoes. A blessing for the couple to walk together in life, I presume. She lets him choose her shoes. A test for the guy, lol. Don’t guys love that. He chooses a pair she likes. She pays for it herself while he helps her put it on. They don’t fight for the bill.

Gu Qian Fan arrests the Hat Phantom. But Commander Cui wants the prisoner and informs Gu Qian Fan that they’re both working for Qi Mu.
[Ep23] Song Yin Zhang performs the piece in rage mode and then earns critical acclaim. The ex-prime minister bestows Song Yin Zhang with his writing. ON HER PIPA. I don’t care who you are, but you cannot scribble on what’s mine. I do wonder if there’s a historical reference here, though. Zhao Pan’er is on her way to pick up the now famous Song Yin Zhang, but her carriage has a flat tire (something like that) and so Gao Hui gives her a lift and then we learn how Ouyang Xu attempted to incite her to elope with him. Blah blah blah. Before Zhao Pan’er reaches Xiao Manor, Song Yin Zhang has already left with Shen Ru Zhuo. He proposes to her on the boat. She’s thinking of Gu Qian Fan, though.

Gu Qian Fan meets with Qi Mu who tells him that marrying Zhao Pan’er will affect his promotion. But there’s something else that bothers Gu Qian Fan: Qi Mu knew the mastermind behind the Hat Phantom before he even interrogated the suspect. A-ha! Qi Mu must be the mastermind.

[Ep24] Zhao Pan’er wants to open a restaurant instead of a teahouse to earn more money. It’s also for Gu Qian Fan's sake. She can’t expose herself in a teahouse after they marry.

The Hat Phantom is arrested by why is there another Hat Phantom? It’s Xiao Qin Yan, one upping Qi Mu. If the Hat Phantom was to target him, then he’ll use it on Qi Mu. He also tells Gu Qian Fan that Qi Mu always knew of their father-son relationship. Xiao Qin Yan puts his life on the line to make Gu Qian Fan choose between him or Qi Mu.

Who will Gu Qian Fan choose? He chooses Xiao Qin Yan. Make that daddy proud! And that half-brother jealous.

[Ep25] The two Gu brothers defend their father. Gu Qian Fan suffers a severe injury to the chest. A worried Xiao Wei even calls him “da ge” (older brother). Then Xiao Wei shouts for help. Zhao Pan’er is the first to react. She sends a rope to the ship (that’s on fire) to anchor it to the dock. She performs first aid for Gu Qian Fan while recognizing the wound is poisonous. She also calls for support (using his firework). It seems Xiao Qin Yan (future FIL) is impressed with her.

Gu Qian Fan wakes up after Chen Lian tells him not to forsaken Zhao Pan’er. He also learns that if it wasn’t for her timely first-aid he’d be dead. And that is how all the credit in saving Gu Qian Fan goes to Zhao Pan’er. Screw the imperial doctors.  Our couple is reunited! Zhao Pan’er and Gu Qian Fan hug.

Song Yin Zhang sees the hug. Then she realizes she’s the last to know. She goes to Shen Ru Zhuo and asks him to tell her his confession again. I reckon what hurt her the most was how no one told her. I mean, can’t blame other people for your own stupidity. Poor guy is now a spare tire.

Other happenings
→ Zhao Pan’er has no ice because of Chi Ya Nei (who’s heartbroken from Zhang Hao Hao who’s jealous of Song Yin Zhang’s popularity).
→ San Niang beats up the misbehaving children for Du Chang Cheng. In the end, it’s her speech that moves the students. The children remind her of her son. She tears up for her ungrateful mongrel of a son
→ San Niang gives Du Chang Feng pig liver (it’s that big???) for his eyes.

[Ep26] Song Yin Zhang accepts Shen Ru Zhuo’s proposal. She moves into his manor. She also wants everything Zhao Pan’er has (like the same type of hairpin) and more.
Gu Qian Fan tells Zhao Pan’er that if it wasn’t for her first aid, he would have died. He kisses her, but she's crying. He tastes her tears. It’s salty. He asks her to not cry anymore. It’s making him want to marry her as soon as possible. Zhao Pan’er takes him for a deeper kiss. She hugs him so tightly, he flinches in pain from his injuries.
Zhao Pan’er wants Gu Qian Fan not to over exert himself in visiting her. He teases her for being gentle. It’s unlike her. Well, our gentle Zhao Pan’er stuffs food in his mouth. How’s that for being gentle? He leans on her shoulders, liking it
Taking turns to lean on each other’s shoulders
Gu Qian Fan is promoted to 5th rank. He  can confer a noble title to his mother and properly wear the red robe (the last time he wore it was a special honour from the Emperor). It’s a day worth celebrating, but Gu Qian Fan isn’t elated. He visits Zhao Pan’er and tells her he doesn’t understand why he's not happy nor unhappy. Zhao Pan’er understands. He risked his life for a 5th rank. Is that what his life is worth? Moreover, the promotion was thanks to Xiao Qin Yan. For all these years he climbed his way up CSO, and in the end he got his promotion but not by his own efforts. Zhao Pan’er comforts him. She wants him to look forward to their future. Be happy for what’s to come.

Zhao Pan’er: Do you remember how you told me not to cry? I also don’t want to see you smile [miserably] like this.

She tells him that from now on, their sorrows and happiness will be shared together. He’s comforted.

Other happenings:
→ Du Chang Feng sends the ladies some ice to thank San Niang for the liver.
→ Zhao Pan’er is shopping for restaurants. But oho! There’s even more sexism! Restaurants are managed by men and only by men. Although girls can manage teahouses, alcohol is a man’s drink and needs that yang (male) energy.

[Ep27] Ouyang Xu is so revolting that even the Prime Minister, an ex-PM, disowns him as his student. He returns all of the presents, which should include The Night Revels
Du Chang Feng’s eyes are better now thanks to Sun San Niang’s liver! Her pig liver. The pig liver. He helps her look over the contract for their new restaurant. Zhao Pan’er is there too but the pig-liver-couple are in their own world, blind to her existence. Du Chang Feng even confesses to San Niang. He will wait for her answer. He knows her past and he has a past as well. He was married for a brief period, but his wife died. From then on he was rumoured to be a curse. No one wanted to marry him.

Gu Qian Fang comes across a document related to Zhao Pan’er's family. After reading it, he doesn’t see her (for the entire episode!). He may be physically absent, but if she needs money for her restaurant, he will empty his bank account for her. With him around (or not around), money isn’t a problem. Pst, how many of you girls want your man away and leave only their wallet? Only when shopping right? (;

Ge Zhao Di is harassed by her mother. She flings her mother away. The normally perceptive Chen Lian is blind and is upset at Ge Zhao Di for mistreating her mother and breaking the doll he bought her. Our always perceptive Zhao Pan’er and San Niang save Ge Zhao Di by withholding the mother and lie that her daughter owes them money and she (mother) will have to pay for it. The mother bargains. She will give up Ge Zhao Di as a slave for free. She even suggests to prostitute Ge Zhao Di. Ge Zhao Di cries. This is the second time she is sold. The first time, her father made her marry (presumably a weird old man) for 10 taels.

[Ep28] Zhao Pan’er tacitly beats up Ge Zhao Di’s mother by using Chi Ya Nei.

Gu Qian Fan secretly visits Zhao Pan'er while she’s sleeping. He leaves her money and seals the window so that her room is warm from the chilly thunderstorm. However, the wind is too strong, the window flutters open and the bill is blown away from its spot. It seems a thunderstorm is looming over our drama too. In the morning, Zhao Pan’er doesn’t see the bill. Still, her faith in her man is unwavering. Unfortunately, circumstances are not in their favour. She needs the money by tomorrow and Gu Qian Fan is away. He’s actually injured and passed out for two days. If he leaves his post, he could be charged with felony. In spite of it all, he rides on his horse overnight to find Zhao Pan’er. Why must Chen Lian be away =.=

Ouyang Xu discovers the secret to The Night Revels. One of the girls in the painting is Liu Wan. Empress Liu Wan is based on the real Empress Liu E. With this, Ouyang Xu can return to the capital. *Evil smirk*

Zhao Pan’er buys the restaurant by pawning the land deed to her teahouse. She promises to retrieve it within a week. And now our four ladies are officially CEOs! Yes, including Song Yin Zhang and Ge Zhao Di.

[Ep29] Gu Qian Fan avoids Zhao Pan’er because his father ruined her father. Ten years ago, her father sent troops to save villagers during peace negotiations – a good deed, but illegal. It was Xiao Qin Yan who impeached him. It is also Xiao Qin Yan who deliberately gave Gu Qian Fan the documents. Xiao Wei says that Xiao Qin Yan’s ultimate plan is to have Gu Qian Fan give up on Zhao Pan’er and then without a woman, he will want to be a good son. I think that’s the logic

Ouyang Xu gives the painting to Qi Mu. To prove that he can be a loyal dog, he eats dirt. I recommend fast forwarding this scene. Made me retch when he retched

Zhao Pan’er still believes in Gu Qian Fan even though he ghosted her. (He is bordering on the realm of ghosts. He fainted from his injuries and is in critical condition.) Although Zhao Pan’er can wait for him, the money cannot.

Du Chang Feng offers 300 strings because he feels guilty for misreading the contract, but even then Zhao Pan’er is short 300. She swallows her pride and begs Chi Ya Nei. At his request, she gives him three bows and dances. Her lucidity is breathtaking (based on the reaction of Chi Ya Nei and the lackeys who have forgotten to breathe). It’s a dance about a wife missing her husband who’s at war. Her longing for Gu Qian Fan expressed in art. Chi Ya Nei gives her the money, but he wants Zhao Pan’er’s hairpin as collateral.  He also taunts her that she might as well be his since Gu Qian Fan doesn’t want her. She slaps him, takes back her hairpin, and avows she will take back her pride too.

[Ep30] Our girls are fearsome this episode but who can blame them why guys are just jerks ALL the time, right? Zhao Pan’er has no money and uses force (by taking her hairpin, jabbing it in the merchant's neck and stops before his skin tears) to take back her due money. Her methods are Gu-Qian-Fan-style. Gotta mention my Gu Qian Fan somewhere in this episode recap T_T Song Yin Zhang is sold for money. Shen Ru Zhuo (you turd. I trusted you) was grooming her to provide sexual services (i.e. to be raped) to Minister Lin in order to keep his (Shen’s) socialite status. His preys all blamed themselves thinking they let another man rape them. Song Yin Zhang won’t fall to a second man. She ties him up, slices his thumb with her sharp pipa strings and makes him thumbprint on a contract to end their relationship. She also throws the maid, an accomplice, to sleep with him on the bed. Hm. Don’t harm another girl, though ):
A turbulent storm demolishes the city, including the teahouse. Zhao Pan’er’s heart is tired. Indeed, Zhao Pan’er’s nemesis is water. She can’t even cry anymore. Hey, but she can yell. She protects Chi Ya Nei, who is bullied by an official. This official looks down on merchants and so she stands up for both Chi Ya Nei and all the merchants. Angered, the official orders to arrest Zhao Pan’er. San Niang and Chi Ya Nei are on guard. Who dares to arrest Zhao Pan’er will have to get through them! Hiya!

[Ep31] The official contrivedly accuses Zhao Pan’er and co of being the Hat Phantom to justify the arrest. They’re saved by the pipa! Song Yin Zhang’s music silences everyone. It’s hidden, but SYZ actually has a retro amplifier somewhere. She denounces the official that if Zhao Pan’er is the Hat Phantom, then she (Song) is involved as well, and therefore the ex-PM Ke Zheng (who signed her pipa) and the current PM Xiao Qin Yan (who organized the banquet where she got her pipa signed) are involved too. Don’t ask. The official apologizes. Then Zhao Pan’er’s pacifies the animosity between the officials (aristocrats) and the merchants with a – speech. It’s her enchanting voice. 100%

Zhao Pan’er wanted to leave the capital, but Chi Ya Nei begs her to manage his conveniently failing restaurant. Even if the girls kick him, or even if he’s injured from head to toe, he’s on his knees, imploring Zhao Pan’er to help. He promises that losses are his and profits will be split among them. He bows to her (four times, one more than her). He even has a contract prepared. It’s blank. She can write anything she wants. Can I get a rich idiot too?

Chen Lian is finally back. Gu Qian Fan is still unconscious. They have to perform bloodletting to kill save him. The guy we don’t want back is back too: Ouyang Xu. Gao Hui is forced to marry him again because he has her undergarment (the equivalent of nude pics) and the support of Qi Mu.

[Ep32] Chi Ya Nei just keeps bleeding. This time from the nose (x2). Ack! It’s the sign and symptom of physical attraction towards Zhao Pan’er. I thought he was going to have a loveline with Song Yin Zhang when he gave her a nickname (Pipa Devil) in the previous episode. Hey, at least after Zhao Pan’er dances, the question he’s concerned about was regarding Song Yin Zhang’s sister

Gu Qian Fan is a wimp. He’s afraid to see Zhao Pan’er and hides in the carriage. Zhao Pan’er knows that he’s refusing to see her. Gu Qian Fan. I love you, but just tell her and let the girl decide on her own what she wants to do. So when Ge Zhao Di tells her that Gu Qian Fan still cares about her (which Ge learned from Chen Lian), will Zhao Pan’er believe that?

Other couples: San Niang accepts Du Chang Feng. They proceed to roll around on the floor. Chen Lian apologizes to Ge Zhao Di for framing her problems with his lens. They make up and don’t roll around on the floor.
My vote goes to He Si!
[Ep33] The restaurant has a grand opening! Zhao Pan’er says they will operate differently from their teahouse. The restaurant needs to be strategically expensive. Got it. More expensive.

Xiao Qin Yan advises Gu Qian Fan that if he’s arguing with Zhao Pan’er to communicate with her to resolve their differences. Am I naive? Why do I believe Xiao Qin Yan? Gu Qian Fan doesn’t believe it. He slits his wrist to cut their father-son relationship. Afterwards, he visits Zhao Pan’er while she’s sleeping. But he yelps. Zhao Pan’er had set up a mouse trap and it successfully caught the mouse Gu Qian Fan. But she refuses to speak to him.

Ouyang Xu reports to the Emperor to depose the Empress!

[Ep34] Ouyang Xu presents the painting to the Emperor to prove that the Empress is a performer. There’s her name and face in the painting. [Historical Reference] The painting that this is based on (according to YouTuber Frank) is Han Xi Zhai’s Night Revel which was created during the Southern Tang Dynasty and therefore unrelated to the Song Dynasty, which this drama is set in. Read more in Historical Reference below if you’re interested.

The Emperor already knows his Empress’s background (as indicated in Ep20) and wants to protect her. Stressed out, he visits the city’s most instagrammable restaurant: Zhao Pan’er's. After the Emperor mentions Yang Zhi Yuan (from Ep1), she realizes the Emperor might be investigating The Night Revel. Clever Zhao Pan’er implies that Ouyang Xu’s painting is a counterfeit because the real one was already lost in a fire. Although this is music to the Emperor’s ears, he still investigates her claims. Because the Emperor cannot be an idiot like every other guy is (excluding the ML). He also develops an affinity for Zhao Pan’er because she reminds him of his Empress.

Zhao Pan’er initiates a meeting with Gu Qian Fan, who’s sprinting to see her. She needs him to fill in the holes to her story in order for it to be the truth. Gu Qian Fan yells at her impulsivity. The Emperor could kill her since she saw the painting. She says she’s doing it for the Empress who she emphasizes with as they were both slaves. Then she says it’s also for Gu Qian Fan whom she may hate, but doesn’t want him in danger <- main reason right here. After she leaves him, in dramatic fashion, he falls down in pain. Gu Qian Fan had asked his subordinate for relationship advice on how to appeal to an angry wife. He got this: 苦肉計 (ku rou ji) which means a scheme of injuries to the flesh to gain pity. As long as the other person cares, the plan is sure to work. I want to say, wasn’t this Zhao Pan’er’s trick too? xD

[Ep35] Gu Qian Fan feigns foot injury (from the mousetrap of all things, lol). It doesn’t work on her. But she did turn around! ...And flung him up. She confronts him for avoiding her. He’s worse than Ouyang Xu who at least had a servant inform her their marriage was cancelled. Because Gu Qian Fan doesn’t want to cancel their marriage! But still a jerk move. I cannot defend the man.
Chi Ya Nei confesses to Zhao Pan'er. Re-jected!
At home, Zhao Pan’er finds yellow flowers. Gu Qian Fan misses her. Aw. There’s five. She clenches them and throws them to the ground. Because there’s only five? xD But there’s hope in this couple!
  • She learns of Gu Qian Fan’s background from Chi Ya Nei. He had to call his own mother “aunt” for all his life.
  • She finds the bill (= 3000 copper coins in a string). She learns from Chen Lian that Gu Qian Fan sold his house for her. Oh hey, this is why we’re missing a deed in Ep18! So he can sell it for money! Ha.
  • She realizes that he risked his life and left his post to rush back to see her. Gu Qian Fan who’s not afraid of anything is afraid of seeing her. What could the reason be?
San Niang is reunited with her son. Boo

Lei Jing informs the Emperor the painting is a counterfeit and likely related to the deceased Zhen Qian Tian (who “committed suicide”). Case closed. And guess what, he’s also a double agent! He’s chummy with both Qi Mu and Xiao Qing Yan, gaining both their trust for how he handled the painting, pulling neither of them down.

Ouyang Xu has lost his bargaining chip and all his support. If he hadn’t been greedy, lying about the origins of the painting to frame Gu Qian Fan, he could have succeeded. Alas, he still has Gao Hui’s undergarment! He threatens Gao Hu to support him. Dad Gao is useless and so Gao Hui overcomes her own plight by distributing handkerchiefs with the same sewing as her undergarment for cheap in the market.

[Ep36] Ouyang Xu vows to haunt Gao Hui for life in her future marriages if she doesn’t help him meet the Emperor. How did Zhao Pan’er and Gao Hui even fall in love with this sordid turd

Lei Jing is a triple agent! He thanks Gu Qian Fan for his brilliant plan and now everyone (Emperor, Empress, Qi Mu, and Xiao Qin Yan) is grateful for him. Lei Jing isn’t aware Gu Qian Fan used him to protect himself and Zhao Pan’er.

Zhao Pan’er reads her father’s notes and learns the reason that torments Gu Qian Fan and plagues their relationship. She’s anguished, but a visit to the temple allows her to realize the present is what’s important. Later on, Song Yin Zhang asks Zhao Pan’er to consider Chi Ya Nei, who’s rich and is willing to give her everything. Zhao Pan’er replies that love isn’t thinking about what the other can give her but what she can give him. And now Zhao Pan’er wants to give the person she loves a push, a push so that “he” has to step out of his world and into hers.
Zhao Pan'er hangs yellow flowers all over Gu Qian Fan's wall at his office! AWWW. Go girl! Gu Qian Fan runs to the teahouse where she’s waiting for him, but he doesn’t step inside. They’re separated by two circular door frames. She tells him she can throw away her self-esteem and pride to ask him one last time, “Are you willing to marry me?” He is. Anytime. But he cannot. He’s not worthy of her.

Zhao Pan'er explains her family’s death isn’t because of his father. It was her father’s choice to save the villagers. He had apologized to her and her mother. He also doesn’t regret it. Zhao Pan’er is the same. She doesn’t regret her decisions. Moreover, it wasn’t Gu Qian Fan who harmed her father. Twenty years ago they didn’t even know each other. What hatred could she have for him?

Gu Qian Fan is still miserable. He wants to hug her but (dramagod forbids) he cannot. She might not mind now, but what about a few years later? He can’t ruin her entire life. She reminds him of their conversation from before. Don’t ask about the past, only look forward to their future. She has always been saying this. “And now you want to use your entire future to pay for the past?” Zhao Pan’er steps over the circular doors to meet him. She gives him one last chance and forgoes her pride (Show, I get it already! Pride is important to her!). She asks if he’ll let go of the past to return to her side. If he doesn’t answer, she will break the hairpin on the count of three. On two (and not one! Man.), he runs to her and hugs her. He has stepped into her world again
Gu Qian Fan: I do. I’m willing to use my forever to love you and protect you. I am willing to use my future to repent for all my sins. I do.
Chen Lian and Ge Zhao Di watch our couple rekindle their romance. Like how Gu Qian Fan and Zhao Pan’er walk hand in hand, Chen Lian reaches out to Ge Zhao Di’s hand, which startles her.

Once Ouyang Xu sees the Emperor, it only accelerates his demotion. The Emperor realizes Qi Mu is the mastermind. and Ouyang Xu is merely a pawn (which lightens his punishment).

The Empress is the one pulling the strings, allowing Ouyang Xu to meet the Emperor and framing Qi Mu. She wants Qi Mu permanently eliminated for harming her. She also controls the Emperor’s eunuch by keeping his nephew as hostage. She says she only wants to protect herself, after all, the Emperor cannot protect her forever. That is all.

Gu Qian Fan takes Zhao Pan’er home. She sees the lesion on his wrist (that will be a lasting scar, a symbol of disowning his father). He tells her that it’s alright. If he can’t lift a sword, he can still write. If he can’t write, then she can just provide for him. ’Tis true. As he talks about designing his home for their marriage, she falls asleep.

Zhao Pan’er returns home at dawn after spending the night at Gu Qian Fan’s. Brokenhearted Chi Ya Nei is neglected. Song Yin Zhang laughs at him.
[Ep37] Gu Qian Fan misses Zhao Pan’er when it has only been four hours since they separated. He wishes he could marry her and see her all he wants. She teasingly reminds him, “Who was it that said he couldn’t last night? / I  only said I’ll date you. Did I say I’ll marry you?” Gu Qian Fan nonchalantly jokes that Chi Ya Nei must be boosting her ego these days. He’s unruffled until seconds later, he breaks into a childish rant that he hates Chi Ya Nei. He’s not even worthy of being his opponent. He also knows she wouldn’t be interested in him. Right? I like how he turns it into a question, asking for confirmation
For Gu Qian Fan, it doesn’t matter when Zhao Pan'er marries him. If it’s never, then so be it because he will always wait for her. He knows she’s forgiving, but their past is still a scar in her heart. He wishes to use time to wash away her sorrows. Zhao Pan’er is not, I repeat, not crying. She is not, I repeat not, wiping her tears because she’s moved by this man’s love.

Ouyang Xu kills Uncle De for stopping him from selling the family's heirloom. o.o. Okay. That escalated

Zhao Pan’er wants the key to Gu Qian Fan's bank because if he manages their finances, they’re going to be bankrupt. He’s splurging on all sorts of (useless) things for Zhao Pan’er when she moves in. He even bought a dog (not useless). With a dog and Chen Xiao in the same conversation, I am reminded of the dialogue in Simmer Down where the FL teased him in that he looked like a corgi. They have fat heads, big ears, and short legs. Chen Xiao (in the drama) reluctantly admits to everything but questions the short legs. Hahahaha
Chi Ya Nei is jealous! So jealous that he's crying?
Oh but Gu Qian Fan looks like he’s crying too.
Ah, it’s a staring contest. That has lasted for an hour already. Zhao Pan’er is exhausted for them.

A bunch of logs fall on the three of them. Gu Qian Fan’s first reaction is to push Chi Ya Nei away and then protect Zhao Pan’er. What is this priority!!! As a result, Gu is injured (but he’s okay) and Zhao twists her ankle. Chi Ya Nei is sitting on the ground in one piece. Who could want them dead? And who among the three of them is the target?

As Zhao Pan’er is resting at Gu Qian Fan’s manor, Song Yin Zhang rises to the occasion and saves the restaurant. She also motivates Chi Ya Nei that there’s nothing to be ashamed of for being weaker than Zhao Pan’er and Gu Qian Fan. Then when he finally realizes the restaurant is in jeopardy, he gets it together.

Fu Zi Fan is angry at her mother for dating Du Chang Feng. He calls her a vixen. Song Yin Zhang pushes him into the water for insulting San Niang.

[Ep38] Fu Zi Fan apologizes %#$%#$^ to his mother who is forgiving.

Gu Qian Fan is arrested (and tortured >.< 👂)! The Emperor suspects him of taking part in Qing Liu. Zhao Pan’er visits Xiao Qin Yan for help because what kind of father wouldn’t help his son? He IS that kind of father. For status and power, he will cruelly watch his son die. He needs to prove to the Empress that he is loyal to her. Omg. I’m such a fool to have trusted this weasel AGAIN. Thankfully, Xiao Wei, the unexpectedly loyal brother, saves Zhao Pan’er. He doesn’t want to see Gu Qian Fan dead nor his lover dead.

Regrettably, Ouyang Xu is still alive (but him being dead was super random to begin with). Zhao Pan’er visits him and confirms his support is the Empress. With Ouyang Xu’s testimony, she wants to remove Qi Mu and punish Gu Qian Fan (a suspected Qing Liu), which will also subdue Xiao Qin Yan’s arrogance. Gotta admit, Empress plays chess

When Zhao Pan’er lets her guard down, Ouyang Xu strangles her. He blames her for everything he suffered. Zhao Pan’er loses consciousness. Then he wallows in his misery. He has no choice but to kill and strangle. He was forced to do all this because of his cowardice and greed. While he’s muttering all this crap, she cries for help. Chen Lian – looking dashing – saves Zhao Pan’er.

In front of the Emperor, Lei Jing and Gao Hui puts in good words for Gu Qian Fan and Zhao Pan’er respectively.

[Ep39] The Emperor releases Gu Qian Fan, who also gets a miracle medicine for his ear. Zhao Pan’er doesn’t know yet that Gu Qian Fan is safe and is suing Ouyang Xu. She wants to make Ouyang Xu lose credibility to undermine his testimony. She accuses him of failing to marry her as promised. Failing to marry is punishable....

The lawsuit is refused by the court because she’s not a citizen (residence >1 year). Who even documents citizenship here? Just lie. However, she’s determined to sue him (even though Gu Qian Fan is safe). It’s not fair that everyone believes Ouyang Xu and not them just because they’re women, and slaves. Kay no. Let’s get the facts straight. Ouyang Xu is innocent until proven guilty. Zhao Pan’er, you failed to sue him, this is true, but Show has twisted the logic for the feminist message it wants. Gu Qian Fan supports her.
This kid tells Zhao Pan’er that she can file her civil case at the Drum Temple. Well planned. This kid is Bao Zheng, the symbol of justice. He has the telltale mole (that looks like a crescent moon on his forehead) and the darker skin tone. He was a judge/minister during the reign of Empress Renzhong (drama’s crown prince). Read more in Historical Reference if you’re interested in knowing the “folklore” between Justice Bao and (Empress) Liu E
At the Drum Temple, anyone with grievances can sue. However, the temple only accepts criminal offences (e.g. robbery and murder). For her civil suit to be accepted, Zhao Pan’er has to endure 20 canes to the butt. She accepts. The judge adds a warning that even if she wins the marriage scam, there is no punishment for the male. Will she still sue? Yes. Zhao Pan’er wants justice. However, the butt canning becomes spine canning, which makes her pass out in 5 beatings. Gu Qian Fan, as head of CSO, denounces the judge who is clearly trying to kill her. Who would want to silence her? The Empress. The Emperor reprimands her brutality against Zhao Pan’er even if her intentions were to take down Qi Mu.

At night Gu Qian Fan infiltrates into the palace. He pledges loyalty to the Empress. She is pleased and promises that after Qi Mu is arrested, he can do whatever he wants with Ouyang Xu. Gu Qian Fan declines. He and Zhao Pan’er want justice and will have him prosecuted for his crimes. Gu Qian Fan even holds the Empress at knifepoint.

[Ep40] After the Empress reluctantly agrees to Gu Qian Fan’s request for a fair trial, she learns it was Zhao Pan’er who saved her. Zhao Pan'er understood what it felt like to be discriminated and how it’s not their fault for being slaves.

Gu Qian Fan returns to Zhao Pan’er who’s still unconscious. He softly tells her that she cannot forsaken him. He kisses her to feed her the medication (from Gao Hu, the father). She wakes up! Another miracle medication. And she can swallow while lying on her belly on top of being unconscious. Time for another 20 canes... Fortunately an official decree arrived. To celebrate the Empress’s birthday, girls can use money to pay for the caning. Awesome. A live GoFundMe is activated and Everyone is pitching in to support Zhao Pan’er.

Zhao Pan’er sues Ouyang Xu for cheating her of marriage (and didn’t marry her) and cheating her of money. She’s not being petty about the money. It was him who reminded her that his punishment would be too light otherwise. It’s still light. No worries. Song Yin Zhang has that covered. She finds proof that Ouyang Xu murdered his student, and Uncle De, and hired a hitman for Zhao Pan’er. The student recorded his crimes in a music sheet, and since Ouyang Xu is a music illiterate, he didn’t know. Ouyang Xu goes berserk. He almost injures the Emperor and the Empress who are in attendance behind the folder. I like how the Empress jumped forward to protect the Emperor. If you want to read more about the Empress, see Historical Reference below.

The Emperor bestows the three ladies a wish each. And not the guys.  San Niang gets a phoenix crown. What did she do again? Ahh, she hit the drum. Song Yin Zhang requests that no one would have to go through the pain Zhao Pan’er suffered to exonerate her deep grievances at the Drum Temple. Zhao Pan’er asks to eliminate classism so that slaves are not to be discriminated and have chance to be promoted. The Empress also kneels down to ask the Emperor for the favour. The Emperor agrees to everything.
The Emperor and Empress tease our couple. They promise to stand up for Zhao Pan’er if Gu Qian Fan ever bullies her. In all seriousness, Gu Qian Fan replies that the royals will never have that chance. Chi Ya Nei pouts.
Don’t worry about Chi Ya Nei (in case you did). He falls in love with Song Yin Zhang, the Pipa Devil, who’s playing the strings to his heart.
Let them always walk on a flower road.
A Marriage! Oh, it’s San Niang and Du Chang Feng’s. As for our couple, Gu Qian Fan and Zhao Pan’er are throwing petals at each other and kissing.

The end~

Okay, the next drama I want to see them in is a wuxia :D. A girl can have a dream.

Remarks

[First Impression (Ep1-10)] First and foremost, yes, I insist on the ‘u’ :)

I exclusively like this for the scenes between Chen Xiao and Liu Yi Fei. Their characters are each other's 知己 (zhi ji). They know (知) each other like they know themselves (己). Oftentimes 知己 is translated as soulmates (+/- romance). Whether it's just them talking or staring, I’m mesmerized. Their quiet scenes have tension.

The rest of the drama, sorry, but I am bored.

Drama is pretty, but I find the beauty dull. It’s like the director doesn’t know how to frame and capitalize the beauty. Long shots are scenic, but it’s the close-up shots where I want to see ML and FL’s faces and emotions in one frame that are lacking. I keep getting the feeling that the screenshots aren’t as pretty as they could be.

A significant part of the drama is about three women scorned. They are either abandoned, divorced, or assaulted. So far, I find their story bland. Yes, the FLs are strong and admirable but look at the guys, they’re are all jerks or idiots, except the ML. Also I find the concept of feminism in Ep10 hypocritical (read more in the recap when it’s up). I’d probably go forward with this drama by ignoring these flaws.

A small point: I think it would have been neat if our ML never drank FL's tea yet (he took a sip in Ep1). It’s pretty hilarious when her tea is ominous for him when he doesn’t even drink it most of the time.

[Actors/ActressesFi-nal-ly. It’s about time Chen Xiao is paired with a FL who can bring on the chemistry with him! I don’t think it’s sizzling, but it’s very soothing. Their maturity and tranquility is alluring.

Interestingly, Liu Yi Fei and Chen Xiao were both main leads in (The) Romance / Return of the Condor Heroes. It’s just she was Xiao Long Nu in 2006 and he was Yang Guo eight years later in 2014. It’s as if a drama-god exists and “reunited” these two.

[Behind the Scenes] I like how there’s a lot of discussion between the director and the two leads (CX and LYF) on how to act in each scene.
  • Ep5 CX performed the entire fight choreography.
  • Ep5 Handshake Scene. CX and LYF were going through different ways to touch their hands. CX even mentionned how handshaking was too western. In the end, I think they went along with CX’s idea of a semi-high-five down below instead of above the elbow (that would be awkward).
[Historical Reference
I’ll be elaborating from this comment below. Do correct me if I’m wrong. Red font for the episode numbers indicate potential spoilers

The Emperor in the drama is based on Emperor Zhenzong, third Emperor of Song Dynasty.

[Ep19The Hat Phantom was a UFO (or UAP) sighting recorded in Song Dynasty which led to the establishment of the Crown Prince (future Emperor Renzong). Although based on a historical event, the timing of the Hat Phantom in the drama is inaccurate. The Emperor’s son is already the crown prince in the drama.
  • If you’re interested in Emperor Renzong’s story, you can watch The Serenade of Peaceful Joy. The entire drama is the chronicle of his life.
[Ep34] The painting that The Night Revel is based on Han Xi Zhai’s Night Revel which was created during the Southern Tang Dynasty and therefore unrelated to the Song Dynasty, which this drama is set in. The Emperor, Li Yu, ordered Gu Hong Zhong to record Han Xi Zhai’s night banquet because the Emperor was interested in promoting Han to be the prime minister. However, the painting showed his extravagance and lust for women. As a result, Han failed his promotion. Interestingly, it seemed that Han Xi Zhai deliberately gave that impression to the Emperor to protect their state. The Northern Tang Dynasty was gaining strength and if someone formidable like Han were to become prime minister of the Southern state, then there likely will be war. (Read more in wikipedia

[Ep38] The rivalry between the Empress and Qi Mu is based on the real party struggles during the reign of Emperor Zhenzong:

Qing Liu Party is led by Kou Zhun (= Ex-PM Ke Cheng), and Zhou Qi (= Qi Mu). This wiki article and Frank’s YouTube video describe how Kou Zhun was removed as PM the first time. He was PM twice in his career. Zhou Qi was simply a devoted follower who was demoted along with Kou Zhun (the second time he was removed as PM). Notice that the drama events don’t match the timing of the historical events.
  • Gao Hu’s archetype is also part of Qing Liu but I forget his name (^^) from Frank’s video. I remember an interesting part was that Gao Hu is related to a noble consort (if you remember in Ep2). It’s likely that the consort is in Cao family, which should be the same lineage as Empress Cao, wife of Emperor Renzong (son of Emperor Zhenzong). Empress Cao is Jiang Shu Ying’s role in The Serenade of Peaceful Joy.
The opposition party is Zhuo Liu = Impure Party. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think they named themselves. This party is led by Empress Liu E (= Empress Liu Wan). Its members are Wang Qin Ruo (= Xiao Qin Yan), Lei Yun (= Lei Jing), and Ding Wei (= Ouyang Xu).
  • It’s not that Kou Zhun is good and Empress Liu E is evil. Kou Zhun is still highly respected. Empress Liu E is very competent. If either were in power then the other cannot stay. It was a power struggle, not a battle of good and evil. Ultimately, the winner is Empress Liu E.
  • Ding Wei was PM for a while, until he was shortly removed and replaced by Wang Qin Ruo. Ding Wei is the guy that flip-flopped between the parties.
[Ep39] Justice Bao’s Civet Cat Exchanged for Crown Prince is a well known tale that’s not based on a real event. There was a Consort Liu (*EmpressLiu*) who was jealous of Lady Li and switched her baby with a skinned cat. Lady Li was banished from the palace, separated from her son. Bao Zheng had no evidence and so he dressed up as the “King of Hell” to scare a witness into revealing the truth that Emperor’s (Renzong) mother is Lady Li.

[Ep40] The Emperor's true love is Empress Liu E. Their love story is very interesting. Liu E was an orphan. She was good at singing and drumming. She was originally married to Gong Mei who then sold her because of poverty at the age of 15. The Emperor, who was a 14yo prince back then, fell in love with her. It’s hilarious that it’s actually recorded in historical documents that he became “listless and thinner” after meeting Liu E. The Emperor back then was against his son marrying Liu E (who was sucking his life force, lol). The prince kept her at his friend’s house until he became the Emperor. When he brought her back to the palace, she was already 30. He gave her the title “Beautiful Lady” and slowly promoted her. When Empress Guo died (probably from the heartbreak of losing three of her children, very pitiful), the Emperor wanted to promote Liu E to be the Empress, but the ministers were against it: (1) She (40yo) had no children; (2) her background. But then their chance came when Lady Li, Liu E’s maid, gave birth to a son (future Emperor Renzong). It’s unclear whether Liu E and the Emperor had planned for this baby.

Liu E’s career as the Empress is even more interesting. After Emperor Zhenzong died, she was the regent. However, she was painted negatively for refusing to relent her powers when Emperor Renzong was of age to handle court matters. But here are the facts: the country she handed Emperor Renzong was a better country, and while she was consort/Empress, there were no documents to indicate any backcourt scheming between the women. When Emperor Zhenzong was alive, it was believed that a lot of decisions were influenced by Liu E. Together, they discussed court matters. She’s a very competent and intelligent woman who also doesn’t stir jealousy among the ladies!
  • Isn’t it cool how she became the Empress when she is a divorcee, a performer (perhaps a prostitute), and older than the Emperor. These are tags that women today struggle with and she became an Empress!
  • Another interesting fact: the Emperor promoted Liu E’s ex-husband and had him become her brother.
  • If you’re interested in Liu E’s story, there’s a drama about her too: Palace of Devotion. Actress Liu Tao plays Liu E. (I didn’t finish it. I couldn’t stand the first few episodes)
[ExtraEmperor Renzong never knew his mother was Lady Li and not Empress Liu until after the latter’s death (this might be the one and only true part of the story Civet Cat Exchanged for Crown Prince). Empress Renzong falsely believed Empress Liu mistreated his biological mother. However, it became apparent when he opened Lady Li’s coffin that Empress Liu wasn’t as evil as others say. The prestigious burial site for Lady Li and the Empress robe she wore all indicated Empress Liu gave Lady Li that honour that was above her status.

嫁雞隨雞,嫁狗隨狗 Jià jī suí jī, jià gǒu suí gǒu – If you marry a chicken follow the chicken, if you marry a dog follow the dog. (Ep20)

苦肉計 Kǔ ròu jì – The trick of injuring oneself to gain the enemy’s confidence (Ep34)

[Ending] Happy!

If only the drama substituted a marriage for the flashbacks. But I also get that drama doesn’t want to be that typical. Gu Qian Fan already promised that no matter when she wants to marry, he will always be ready.

[Review & Rating]
Give me a second. Let me soak in the sensuous romance a little longer. I can stare at Gu Qian Fan and Zhao Pan’er saunter in slowmo all day long and I won’t get bored. Okay no, I will get bored, but hey, it’s the thought that counts!
Row1: Ep1, Ep40
Row 2: Ep5
Row3: Ep6, Ep18, Ep40
I particularly like how elegantly the drama connects the love story with their hands. The way he helped her stand up in Ep40 was reminiscent of their first touch in Ep1. The first night his feelings were overflowing (Ep5), they tended and cleansed each other’s hands and dolorous hearts. The day he returned her handkerchief (Ep6) was a symbol of letting go. The day he didn’t want to lose her, he took her hand and gave her all of himself and all that he owned (Ep18).

The best part of the drama really is in the first half.... The rest of the story manages to be eventfully boring. The scale of Zhao Pan’er’s problems are large, and yet the stakes are never too high. I reckon her most formidable adversary is water and rain. It’s intentional that the ML is absent so that she solves her own problems, but without him, the drama is an empty vessel (which, uh, at least it’s still a gorgeous empty vessel?). It’s no wonder Chen Xiao said in his interview that he had no idea what the product would look like. The dude is siloed from the girls’ story (which is half the drama)!

Luckily, in Gu Qian Fan’s absence, Chi Ya Nei livens the drama with his vivacious performance  – as a wallet. He’s conveniently what Zhao Pan’er needs: lots of cash with nowhere to spend it and no brain to manage it. I didn’t like his character in the beginning but then Dai Xu worked his magic at the end, although I still prefer his (serious) charismatic roles.

Feminism is ubiquitously applied. I’m just unreceptive. I was unconvinced from the beginning and it's not like this is a romcom where I can have fun mocking the parts I disagree with (e.g. speaking up for slaves while looking down on prostitutes, supporting merchants while forgetting the workers, praising females while stepping on males). However, at its core, I believe drama is well-intentioned. I tell myself that this wants to be a beautiful piece where girls empower girls. I can accept that. 🧘🏻‍♀️

I was here for the romance anyway.

By the way, did you guys spot these wacky supporting characters?
The guy on the left keeps talking while the guy on the right doesn't move. At all. It's pretty hilarious.

Random Recommendation: Love Better Than Immortality.
