My Sunshine [何以笙箫默] Episode 27

It's an episode with more travelling. However, the spotlight disperses on a couple of side characters rather than simply Yi Chen and Mo Sheng, but don't worry these two are as blissful as ever.

After learning about INSO’s imminent troubles, the lawyer Yi Chen requested for help in the States for Mo Sheng’s divorce matters advises him that this is the best opportunity to file the lawsuit against Ying Hue. Sort of like taking advantage of the weak. However, Yi Chen refuses to.

It doesn’t seem like Ying Hue is in imminent danger in this scene as he has time to waste with Xin Ying. She gifts him her homemade chicken that he used to love back in their university days to thank him for the job he recommended. She comments that everything’s great about the job except her husband’s feelings towards it. Her husband thinks that she’s having an affair with her Ying Hue; as she says that, she looks down pitifully. Oh, what a boring and predictable character. Ying Hue doesn’t seem very impressed with Xin Ying and her act but luckily Linda comes in to save him. When Xin Ying leaves, he orders Linda to throw away the chicken.

For some reason, romance comes before business because his company matters only take the spotlight after we deal with Xin Ying. Not that I agree don’t agree with this order but both stories regarding Ying Hue is boring. Basically, there’s three important parts for the next few minutes: Ying Hue’s in deep water if they lose; he needs to return to the States right now (yay!); his divorce needs to be hidden because that will affect their company image even more (whatever). So, I guess we’re supposed to understand Ying Hue because now he has a legit reason to hold onto Mo Sheng shamelessly.

Returning to our impenetrable couple, Mo Sheng’s preparing for Yi Chen’s breakfast tomorrow. He casually asks her whether it’s because she can’t afford to pay anymore. LOL. However, Yi Chen gets serious when he tells her he might not be able to eat breakfast before he leaves for work because the office is pretty busy lately. Mo Sheng doesn’t care as she emphasizes the importance of breakfast. Yi Chen, agreeing with breakfast’s importance, tells her instead that he’ll cook so that she won’t have to wake up so early. Seriously, this guy does not exist. However, so as not to be such a romanticist, he adds in that he’s not too sure about her cooking anyways.

And Ying Hue’s finally going to the States! Only Linda accompanies him but they’re stopped by Xin Ying. It doesn’t seem like Ying Hue wants to dally in the airport any longer because of all the reporters so Linda steps in to help him deal with Xin Ying. Xin Ying wants to tell Ying Hue to have a safe flight and that she would be waiting for his return. Linda points out that this isn’t something someone’s wife should be saying. She warns Xin Ying that Ying Hue’s kindness (what kindness?) has a limit and if she were to continue neglecting her family, Ying Hue wouldn’t want to see her anymore. With that, Linda leaves her.

Xin Ying returns home all depressed. We finally get to see her husband and he seems so adorable! I mean this guy prepares her favourite dishes, pulls out the chair for her, and complies to all her wishes when she’s giving all that attitude. She contemplates whether she’s really satisfied with a life like this in such a small house with such a normal husband. WOW.

Xin Ying returns to her parent’s home because she claims she doesn’t want to stay in the house when it’s renovating. However, the moment Xin Ying returns home, her mother is complaining about her daughter because compared to her friend’s daughter, she married such a poor man. Xin Ying bites back at her for making her leave Ying Hue in the past. So, like mother like daughter, the mother is regretting losing Ying Hue as a son in law. (Mother, I liked you much better when you were Shan Shan’s mother in Boss & Me) Xin Ying’s mother asked her whether there’s still a possibility between her and Ying Hue and if there is, make sure to grab hold of it. Xin Ying finally speaks human as she reminds her mother she’s married. However, her mother proudly asks what’s wrong with being married when divorce is so easy to obtain.  Xin Ying is reminded of Linda’s words and misinterprets it as Ying Hue will possibly care for her if she divorces. Uh…well I guess there’s something good about this; you’ll be freeing your husband.

So is this an episode of rounding out boring bad characters? Mi Fei comes barging into Yi Chen’s law firm demanding for Yi Chen. And of course, Yi Chen doesn’t care at all as he lets her wait endlessly. With Mi Fei’s personality, it was only about time until she invited herself right into Yi Chen’s office. With Lawyer Yuan’s expression like that in the above screen cap, it’s obvious even his smooth talking skills couldn’t handle her. Mi Fei releases her anger for making her wait and this is all overheard by Mo Sheng on the phone.

On the other end, Mo Sheng becomes so worried that she immediately heads to Yi Chen’s office. When she’s arrived, Yi Chen has not only refused to take Mi Fie's case but also made her scream angrily in the public. Mo Sheng continuously tells him how angry she is about Mi Fei acting so rude towards Yi Chen. Yi Chen jokingly tells Mo Sheng that she won’t be very good in arguments because she’s just repeating the same words over and over again. He tries to change the topic by suggesting lunch. However, Mo Sheng brings up another topic: she wants to go to the States.

Yi Chen’s totally calm after hearing that (which is a huge change from that HK incident, a testament to their impenetrability). She tells him it’s because she wants to settle the divorce matters with Ying Hue before they hold their wedding. Wait, Yi Chen decided not to take advantage of the weak but Mo Sheng wants to strike while the iron’s hot? It doesn’t make sense why Mo Sheng would do this to Ying Hue when he’s at his worse… Anyways, Yi Chen’s smiling at that and compliments her for wanting to handle the matter on her own with such assertiveness, “Our Mo Sheng has finally grown up.” However, before agreeing to Mo Sheng’s idea, he asks her, “If you’re going to America for a law suit, how can you not bring your lawyer?”

And off they go to America. (So this is where they spent all their production money, from the States, to Hong Kong, to Mauritius and back to the States). On the airplane, Mo Sheng can’t sleep and is reminded of her flight to the States seven years ago. However, at that time the person sitting beside her was a fat old man. She reminisces how she wished it was Yi Chen back then. Intending to lighten the mood, Yi Chen assures her he probably won’t be fat, but he’ll be old. So, I guess this is his way of guaranteeing that they'll be together forever.

After landing, they’re greeted by this weird looking foreigner who’s supposed to be a lawyer (the one handling the divorce case in the States). He’s called Jason. Yi Chen introduces his wife to him. However, Jason makes a pun out of her name as he comments on how weird the Chinese are to find a stranger to marry (Zhao is homonymous to “find” as Mo Sheng is to “stranger”).

It’s a fun ride from the airport as Jason is actively dancing while driving. I’m not too sure that’s a great combo but Mo Sheng is complimenting Jason although doubting his identity as a lawyer. She playfully compliments how much charm and fashion sense Jason has compared to how dull and monochrome Yi Chen is. Yi Chen comments that he never knew Mo Sheng was interested in that type.

It’s back to work. With a little dancing. I’m not sure if it was on purpose that they found a secretary taller than Jason for him to flirt with for fun or that was the best female foreigner they can get… Anyways, it’s really back to work and Jason explains the case and brings up a new name we haven’t heard: Tom Wolf. Apparently, they need to find this Tom Wolf because he signed as a witness to her divorce but it’ll be difficult getting him to testify because that means he’ll be admitting he was part of the forgery.

It doesn’t seem like Yi Chen wants Mo Sheng directly finding Tom Wolf herself as he redirects her questions about what will happen after they find him. He tells her he’s going to beat him up and Mo Sheng takes that seriously. Yi Chen stares at her incredulously for believing that. Mo Sheng then comments that Yi Chen should bring her along when he’s solving other cases because it seems so intriguing, like a detective at work, and being a photographer herself, she can even snap cool shots of him. Yi Chen raises both his hands to protest against that idea but then he realizes his mistake as he explains that it’ll be wasting her talents. Luckily food comes in right at this moment.

However it’s not the food that distracts Mo Sheng, it’s the waitress’s outfit. She tells Yi Chen that she once wore it too because she worked at this very restaurant seven years ago. She reminisces how bad her English was that she was demoted to washing the dishes. Yi Chen listens attentively to Mo Sheng’s every word as she recalls her grim past.

Yi Chen finally asks the million dollar question: “Why didn’t you return to Shanghai then?” I remember how this question was repeatedly asked in the first few episodes that even I got annoyed of it. Now, I actually forgot about it until Yi Chen asked it. To be honest I thought the question was already solved with her father forbidding her to return for the next three years then plus another three years for taking care of Xiao Jia and then the final year with Ying Hue because he asked for that favour. However, the first three years is actually a mystery as to why she stayed because although her father forbade her, it was still possible for her to return.

She tells him she didn’t return because she was afraid: she was afraid to face her father’s death and she was afraid to face Yi Chen who wanted to break up with her. Yi Chen is speechless to learn that just because of their one argument, she left to the States without any warning. Mo Sheng clarifies that she believed he was that type of person, a person who doesn’t take back their words. Yi Chen tells her that no matter how assertive he is, there will be times his emotions can take the better of him. Mo Sheng smiles at that because she knows now.

It seems that the show likes evening things out because after Mo Sheng reveals everything about her, Yi Chen lets out a little secret of his own. Last year, he had planned to immigrate to the States and we all know why: to find Mo Sheng.
