Another public servant character for Johnny Huang Jing Yu. Another cop drama for Wang Zi Qi. One would think the storyline will be tired and cliché’d but somehow this buddy cop drama hit all the right notes. Here’s to another great drama with a fabulous supporting cast! The villains were fleshed out, the supporting characters were fleshed out, and the main characters were played perfectly by Johnny Huang, Zhang Yu and Wang Zi Qi. I know that WZQ was listed as supporting but the 3 of them were front and center.
This drama was a slow start for me. I felt like Johnny Huang Jing Yu keeps picking the same type of roles, and I was just getting tired of seeing him in the same character dressed up differently. Wang Zi Qi is so versatile, and I love watching his drama, so I persisted and what a payoff! I never saw Zhang Yu but he played Jiang Xiao Hai as a conflicted, complex, gray, is-he-a-good-guy-or-bad-guy tightrope perfectly.
Zheng Bei (Johnny Huang) is the Team lead for a new task force to handle the ongoing drug problem in Halan. He assembled a team of experts, but was commanded by his supervisor, Captain Gao to recruit a chemistry professor who specializes in the chemical components of street drugs. So ZB begrudgingly went to Southern China (Hua Zhou) to “recruit” the professor. [The sprinkling of Cantonese also kept me engaged in the beginning, not gonna lie]. He met Gu Yi Ran(Wang Zi Qi) whom he thought was an elderly old fart, and “asked” Gu Yi Ran to join his team. GYR said no, so then ZB said, I am sorry to hear that and proceeded to leave. He called Capt Gao and said GYR turned him down, so he will head back. Capt Gao said, he better not come back without the Professor. LOL. So after some days trying to convince GYR, without really putting in the efforts since ZB thinks he has the perfect team already. Finally as a last ditch effort (because Capt Gao forbade him to come home without GYR), ZB gave GYR the files on what is happening in Halan. When GYR finds out that the people in those files are some of the same people that killed his neighbor and his father, he changed his mind and decided to go back with ZB. Thus begins the drama.
Gu Yi Ran is a reserved, well mannered, and procedural cop. Though he maintains his physique by running everyday and keeps up with his police qualifications, he has never really been in the field (always in the lab). The drama documents how he went from a rookie field agent into an experienced agent. Yes, there were mistakes along the way but there were also some heroic acts. Because he was willing to risk his safety in helping his fellow teammates, he was able to endear himself to them, despite his long chemistry lessons. GYR is also a foodie, and loves to try all northern cuisines.
Zheng Bei is a confident, experienced and good nature detective. He is always ready to lend an ear, a hand or anything to his friends. Due to a childhood trauma, he takes his “Ge” role very seriously. Anyone that calls him Bei Ge, he feels he needs to do everything to support and protect them. He is also an excellent leader in providing guidance and mentoring his team. Johnny Huang does what he does so well (look pretty, be confident, smart and funny). However, there were some acting chops shining through in some of the emotional scenes. He has improved, and wow, one scene in the latter episodes was so perfectly acted. I have newfound respect for his acting. Was it a fluke? Or does he have more range than before? Either way, he was perfect for this role.
In the course of investigating the drug cartel, they interviewed a witness Jiang Xiao Hai. But Jiang Xiao Hai’s story didn’t add up, so they questioned him again, and he then gave the truth. On an unrelated foot chase, ZB was trying to chase a druggie, but then druggie held a little girl hostile. JXH saved the day by creating a diversion so that ZB could separate the druggie from the girl who turned out to be JXH’s niece. He invited ZB to his sister’s place for dinner for saving his niece. They swore brotherhood. Later we find out that JXH is a low level gangster and got into a huge fight with a hotel fuerdai (do they still call them that?) He got arrested and saw Zheng Bei. And started to scream out Ge! Ge! To ZB. Thus begins their complicated relationship.
Again, ZB takes his role as big brother seriously. He tried numerous times to get Jiang Xiao Hai back on track, but no matter how hard he tries, JXH seems to always be back to his old ways (beating up people). There was one hilarious scene where everyone was fighting around JXH (on his orders). When ZB came (as that restaurant is his family’s), he was scolding JXH, and JXH said, I didn’t fight! I never lifted a finger…the waitress confirmed that JXH wasn’t fighting. He just sat and ate his noodles. Without spoiling the whole drama, JXH's sister is part of the cartel and so is his godfather. With a family like that, no wonder it is hard for JXH to stay the path.

The drama did a great job interspersing the human stories with the overall crime fighting investigation. As the investigation progressed, so did the different relationships. The drama also did a great job in building the suspense and the final 3-4 episodes are not to be missed and are on the edge of your seat actions.
What is a great drama without fleshed out villains?! The villains were smart, dangerous, and a bit crazy but never over the top caricatures. Though the introduction of Xiao Ma Ge (big baddie) was a bit flat, it ended up making a lot of sense.
I give this drama a 5/5 (Cyn Lynn won't let me rate a half star...Right? What a prick.) But it took about 7 episodes to get me engaged. However, once I was engaged, I was captivated.
