[Ep1] Shen Jin is ordered by her father to sit beautifully for the painter to draw her portrait. This portrait is to be sent to the Emperor to be selected as one of his consort. Shen Jin smiles gracefully. However, behind the scenes at the doors are four servants carrying threatening weapons forcing her to smile. Pft. The painter leaves and Shen Jin's face is permanently frozen with a smile.
[Ep3] Chu Xiu Ming had asked Shen Jin about her jade but she doesn't remember anything. There’s somethjng about this jade and it’s connections to this tomb that troubles Chu Xiu Ming. He tries to open this secret chamber with the jade but the doors won’t open. While he's away, there are enemies attacking his manor. Chu Xiu Yuan needs help to guard the manor thus Shen Jin wears Chu Xiu Ming's armour and mask to fend off the enemies. She almost exposes herself when she can barely move in the heavy metal. Fortunately, she buys enough time for Chu Xiu Ming to arrive. The entire manor accepts her warmly and admires her bravery. Shen Jin also seems touched by her courage.

The royal decree arrives minutes later. It's not a marriage for Shen Jin. It's a marriage for the second daughter of Shen family to the notorious devil lord general. Shen Xin is the second daughter but she starts blabbering that technically, no one really knew who was born first since her and Shen Jin were practically given birth at the same time. She starts twisting the truth and renders Shen Jin as the second Shen sister. Shen Dad supports this theory and therefore the daughter to marry the devil is Shen Jin.
Shen Jin is on her way to marry but it turns into an outright battlefield. She makes eye contact with a scary warrior. He's covered up in armour from head to toe with a brass face mask. This warrior wins the battle. After all havoc is over, Shen Jin is alone with her servant (Rou Rou - she's the girl from Love a Lifetime with the exact same hairdo). The people escorting her to her fiancé have ditched her. Upset at being abandoned, she walks the rest of the way to find Chu Xiu Ming, her fiancé. She loudly knocks on his gates but no one is opening them. Relentless, Shen Jin climbs over the walls. She bumps into a man. Since he's not scary looking, she assumes he must not be her General. She tells this man she's here to argue with Chu Xiu Ming. If he doesn't want to marry her, that is his business but her marrying him is her business. She has to marry him so that her family will be safe. She soon realizes this man is indeed her husband, Chu Xiu Ming.
Extra Scene. Chu Xiu Ming purposely brought Shen Jin's carriage to the middle of the battlefield. He‘s cautious of her because his previous three wives were all spies. If in the battle she dies, then that's killing two birds with one stone.
[Ep2] Now that Shen Jin has seen her husband, he's not half bad. When Chu Xiu Ming arrives in her room, Shen Jin quickly dons on earrings to present herself to him. Her bright attitude makes him suspicious of her and so he casts her aside. Perhaps it's this attitude that makes her determined to ruin his reputation. She takes a pill that will make her look like she died. Because that will ruin his reputation for reasons beyond me. Before Rou Rou could stop her, she already swallowed it. A crazy laugh ensues. Ha.
Rou Rou informs Chu Xiu Ming that Shen Jin is about to die. The two of them spot her being led away by Chu Xiu Ming's enemy. From this exchange, Chu Xiu Ming realizes she's not a spy. But it's too late, Shen Jin is dead. He carries her home to lay her to rest. He apologizes for misunderstanding her. Once in bed, Shen Jin gasps for air. She's alive again to Chu Xiu Ming's surprise. However, he's soon distracted by her jade necklace. He points to it wanting the necklace. For a moment, she thought he was pointing to her chest. Chu Xiu Ming snatches the necklace from her but Shen Jin latches onto him. Mao Zi Tou (Chu Xiu Min's guard) hits her so she faints once more. Chu Xiu Ming glares at him. Rou Rou also attacks him.
Chu Xiu Ming orders Shen Jin to be locked in her room. Mao Zi Tou assures Chu Xiu Ming that no one can open the lock without the key but Shen Jin opens it with ease. In return, Shen Jin locks Chu Xiu Ming in his room. She proudly leaves the manor with his horse. She doesn't exactly know how to ride one but the horse manages to take her to the city gates. The guards are about to punish her for riding their General's horse and lying about being the General's Lady. The guards want to arrest her. Luckily or unluckily, Mao Zi Tou is here to escort her back to the manor.
Shen Jin doesn't think she's wrong for leaving the manor when Chu Xiu Ming is the one who locked her up. She also reminds him if she tattles to the Emperor that he's stalling the marriage, he'd be in big trouble. Thus Chu Xiu Ming agrees to three wishes of hers to keep her mouth shut. First one is that she can freely enter and leave the manor. Second wish: she can take his horse to exit the city gates. She still hasn't thought of her third wish. Shen Jin assures Chu Xiu Ming she won't actually leave the city, she just wants to show the guards at the gates she is the General's Lady. Chu Xiu Ming allows it. But she doesn't know how to ride a horse and requests him to guide the horse for her. Chu Xiu Ming has his own reputation too. So they ride on the horse together with their bodies close.
When Shen Jin complains that his horse is slow, Chu Xiu Ming tells her to hang on tight. He gallops away with her out of the city. They're both enjoying the ride. She asks him if she can roam inside the manor freely too. He approves. He'll even let her in his study room or bedroom if she wishes. This romance is quick.
Extra scene. Shen Jin asks Mao Zi Tou what's the punishment for stealing a horse. It's 50 flocking. What about stealing the General's horse? 100 flocking. What about stealing the General's horse and then escaping the city with it? Flock 'till death. Shen Jin gulps.

After a night of celebration, a drunk Shen Jin barges into Chu Xiu Ming's room. She cries that she pities him having to wear that massive armour all the time. Still drunk, she asks him for a reward. She wants his room. And so be it. He gives her his room. The next day the servants are busy hustling around her. They're preparing her for a sweet wedding night with Chu Xiu Ming. Shen Jin is slightly excited too. She is the first woman to enter his room as his wife.
Shen Jin awaits for Chu Xiu Ming in a wedding dress in a room covered in red and more red. Chu Xiu Ming wasn't expecting this. He tells her she misunderstood. Shen Jin lifts up her veil and smiles that she agrees with him. They're only husband and wife by name. Since he gave her his room, she wants him out of it but he can't leave. Although they're only married by name, they still have to look like they're married. He takes the bed and makes her sleep elsewhere in the room. Upset, Shen Jin declares that the bed is his but everything else is hers. Grumpily, he agrees.
Our married couple by name continue their childish fight the next day. She tries to torment him with delicious roasted yam that she won't let him eat. Until she finishes the entire yam does he tell her there's a feast tonight. She makes him drink nasty congee as revenge. He retaliates by making her eat until she's stuffed.
[Ep4] Shen Jin can't sleep because she's way too full so Chu Xiu Ming takes her on a stroll. Her steps are sluggish because of her bloating stomach. He gives her his belt to guide her. Both of them are smiling as they walk around the manor in countless circles.
The next day, Chu Xiu Ming takes Shen Jin to a gigantic tomb. He wants her to unlock the door for him. Shen Jin recognizes this lock. There's a story to it. A man stole a Night Pearl for the woman he loves but when he returned, the woman had already passed away from her illness. The lock guards the Night Pearl.
As Shen Jin tries to open it with her trusty hair pin, she's missing something. She needs a strand of Chu Xiu Ming's hair. He's wondrous at how useful his hair is. Shen Jin innocently replies, "Any hair would have worked." He's upset at her for not using her own then. Her reply, "I'm not silly enough to use my own hair."
The lock is open. They enter the chamber which is booby-trapped in every corner. Shen Jin is furious at him for bringing her to such a dangerous place. She doesn't know that to protect her, he took an arrow for her. After they open the treasure, the place collapses on them, Shen Jin finally notices blood on his back. When they're back in the manor, Shen Jin applies ointment to his back injury. She gasps at his scars.
Chen Xiu Ming: If you're afraid, then get Mao Zi Tou in here instead.Shen Jin: I am in pain because of your past injuries. I am afraid because I fear you'll have new injuries.
After applying the medication, she puts his hair back in place. She strokes his hair with her hands. She confesses that she's in love with him. A smile slips through his lips but he reminds her he's the devil General. Before he completes his sentence, she kisses him. Although surprised, he soon returns the kiss. A guard interrupts their moment and Shen Jin shyly runs away.
Chu Xiu Ming isn't that happy though. There's something relating Shen Jin to the jade that opens the chamber. He has a mission he needs to complete for his "auntie" and "8th Prince" (who would technically be the current Emperor's brother). He can't pull Shen Jin into his messy and dangerous life.
Meanwhile, a happy bride is waiting for her husband. Shen Jin is expecting the night be sweet and romantic.
Extra Scene. Chu Xiu Ming writes a divorce letter. Chu Xiu Ming's voiceover: "If one day I were to die on the battle field...then, my lady, I am afraid you'll be too heartbroken." I was not expecting a divorce this episode.
[Ep5] Shen Jin wakes up in the morning to find a divorce letter next to her pillow. She stomps her way to Chu Xiu Ming demanding for an explanation.
Shen Jin: Your eyes, eyebrows, and nose all tell me you love me! Except the mouth eh. I, Shen Jin, am not a girl who you can just divorce.
Shen Jin meant her words. She follows Chu Xiu Ming all the way to his training site. She applies to be his new soldier dressed as a male. Mao Zi Tou helps her so she can pass the tests with ease. Shen Jin complains to Mao Zi Tou that he was too obvious. He could have attacked her a bit. Mao Zi Tou quivers that he can't even hurt her slightly. I wonder who's orders he's receiving.
Chu Xiu Ming is doing his every part to keep her from harm's way. When Shen Jin chooses a ferocious looking weapon that she can barely lift, he changes it to a light broom stick. When Shen Jin adds something yummy to her plain food, he thought it was poison and threw her food away. When Shen Jin needs to shower, he drags her to his tent (but she refuses). When she needs a place to sleep, he gets Mao Zi Tou to drag her to his tent. Once again, she refuses. He should have gotten her consent before arbitrarily deciding everything for her. She questions him that he's divorcing her, he has no right to be this nice to her. She's forcing him to admit he likes her.
Eventually, Shen Jin makes a deal with him. She can sleep and shower in his tent but she wants alcohol. He gives in despite alcohol being banned on training site. Once she's drunk, she starts crying and complaining that one moment he's hot and the next he's cold. As he ponders on her words, Shen Jin finds her way to the lake. She strips, thinking she can finally shower. Chu Xiu Ming follows her in but shyly turns away because of her skimpy (but not that skimpy) clothes. She dares him to turn around to look at her. "Are you a man?" However, he won't turn around. She then falls backward into the water.
Extra Scene. Shen Jin eavesdrops on Chu Xiu Ming's conversation with Chu Xiu Yuan. She learns he had assigned his men to make her training easier.
[Ep6] Chu Xiu Ming gives mouth-to-mouth to an unconscious Shen Jin. He slowly realizes a divorce isn’t that simple for her. She has nowhere else to go. But he tells her he won’t take back what he has decided. His actions tell us otherwise though. He piggybacks her home, changes her wet clothes [while staying blindfolded (but he still got to touch her body)] and prepares medicine for her the next morning.
Shen Jin wanted to celebrate Chu Xiu Ming’s birthday but the day turns cold when he lectures her on using gun powder as fireworks and other stuff. He’s making her angry on purpose. It works; she leaves. She writes him a letter, a divorce letter. She claims she’s the one divorcing him. Tearfully, she leaves the training site without turning back at all. When Chu Xiu Ming realizes he wants her back, she’s already gone. The gates have closed.
Chu Xiu Ming receives orders that there will be a general to oversee his activities. He goes to receive the edict and lo and behold it’s Shen Jin. LOL. Nice.
Extra Scenes. Shen Jin's journal entries. It’s all her love notes for Chu Xiu Ming, things like wanting to be his umbrella after seeing how hard he's working and everything else cheesy. This is the journal Chu Xiu Ming was reading the night Shen Jin left.
Training is over (for now). Shen Jin doesn’t know how to return to the manor because Chu Xiu Ming divorced her. An intelligent Rou Rou reminds her that as long as she denies ever receiving the divorce letter, she is still his wife. That’s the shameless way to go at it but she’s Shen Jin, the courageous woman. She dares Chu Xiu Ming that if he wants to divorce her, he’ll have to write the divorce letter to the Emperor. Thus, Chu Xiu Ming agrees that he'll take her back as his wife in name only but when they're back in training, she is still the general.
Shen Jin turns into a noble lady it scared me. It startles Chu Xiu Ming but because of how calm she is, these two are able to exist harmoniously with each other. These two are so peaceful, I can’t get used to this. But! They are very sweet together. Not a word exchanged during lunch but so much love. The small break is over and they’re headed back to the training site. He offers his hand to help her into the carriage. When the carriage jostles, he tenderly keeps her safe.
At the training site, Xiao Su and Shen Jin’s friendly interactions are making Chu Xiu Ming jealous. He also catches Xiao Su suspiciously trespassing prohibited grounds. He punishes him but Shen Jin uses the medallion that Chu Xiu Min gave her. He had given it to her to protect herself but now she’s using it to protect another man. Chu Xiu Ming is furious.
Extra Scene. After Shen Jin left the training site, she visits Xiao Su ask him to give her a General title. She says it’s to get back at Chu Xiu Ming. But when Xiao Su badmouths Chu Xiu Ming for being evil (e.g. devilish murderer, slaughters children), Shen Jin is quick to retaliate. (By the way, Chu Xiu Ming does not slaughter children, he adopts orphans and feeds them as well as he can).
[Ep8] Throughout the holiday dinner, Chu Xiu Ming is in a super jealous and angry mode. He bans alcohol from henceforth. His anger dissipates into distress when Shen Jin goes missing. He tries to find her by asking Xiao Su but he earns a lecture from him instead. Xiao Su has never seen her this sad. Chu Xiu Ming loses his composure at the thought of losing her. He searches the entire city. Night falls and he still can’t find her. He cries to an empty meadow that he divorced her because he can’t give her his lifetime so he rather end it with her early, to shorten her pain. With that confession, Shen Jin appears. 
Shen Jin nods. Chu Xiu Ming hugs her tightly as if she'd disappear.
Chu Xiu Ming belatedly learns Xiao Su and Rou Rou are a pair. With all the misunderstandings cleared, Chu Xiu Ming and Xiao Su work together to capture the spy in his camp. So he’s actually a good guy. So who's the bad guy?
Shen Jin gives a jade to Chu Xiu Ming to keep him safe. He raises the jade into the lighting. She asks him what he sees. Chu Xiu Ming: “Your true heart.”
Extra Scene: Double date between the couples before Xiao Su left.

[Ep7] Shen Jin is now Chu Xiu Ming’s senior. She’s higher than him by a rank. How did that happen? It’s thanks to Xiao Su. But I actually don’t know how thi happened. Chu Xiu Ming is surprisingly obedient. He’s quite courteous to her. However, he does tell her to leave. She challenges him to a duel to prove she deserves to stay. It’s not a regular battle. Whoever is the fastest at untying themselves from the chains underwater wins. There's a feather for each of them. In case one of them cannot free themselves, letting the feather float back up is an SOS message. They both dive in but Chu Xiu Ming has no intentions of freeing himself. Until Shen Jin unlocks all the chains, he takes the feather out of her mouth but holds it in his hand. He smiles to her. He’s losing on purpose. Shen Jin rushes to him.
The people above the water are confused because all they see is their chains getting closer. Under the water, she kisses him to give him air. Lungs re=powered, he tugs on the chain to let his men know to pull them up. As they emerge from the water, Shen Jin is still in his arms and their lips still locked. There's also some mandatory drama spins in midair. The winner is both of them. They tied.
Shen Jin is angry at Chu Xiu Ming for using her. He knew she was going to save him. Angrily, she asks him whether he would have done the same for her. Our lovely couple experiences their first problem. It’s not theirs. It’s Rou Rou’s. Xiao Su has to return to the city leaving a heartbroken Rou Rou. As Rou Rou’s best friend, Shen Jin tells Chu Xiu Ming to keep his distance so as to not hurt her anymore than she already is. Chu Xiu Ming, who has just wholeheartedly accepted loving his wife is now, is forced to keep a physical distance from her. Heh. This is cute. Chu Xiu Ming and Shen Jin go on a secret date but Rou Rou appears out of nowhere. Shen Jin kicks him into the water. Obediently, Chu Xiu Ming stays submerged. Haha. When Chu Xiu Ming is breathing too much underwater (he's making a lot of bubbles rise), Shen Jin throw a rock at him in the water to tell him to stop breathing, lol.
[Ep9] Xiao Su reports to the Emperor that Chu Xiu Ming is loyal and that he and his wife are harmonious. Spies are abound his camp though. The next news we hear of Xiao Su is he is beheaded.
When Rou Rou hears news of this, she drinks with Shen Jin on the rooftop. She’s prepared to join Xiao Su. That’s when the men arrive and catch their ladies before they fall from the height. (Xiao Su and Chu Xiu Ming are working together; Xiao Su is under Emperor's orders to fake his death). Both couples spin some more in the air. A wine bottle rolls down from the roof. Shen Jin wanted to protect Chu Xiu Ming but Chu Xiu Ming takes the hit for her.
A princess (Ma Ya) from a neighbouring country lodges at Chu Xiu Ming's manor. It’s Shen Jin’s turn to freak out each time Princess Ma Ya touches her husband. She’s so jealous that he finds her so cute. He sweetly kisses her but then Princess Ma Ya hollers for the General from afar. Shen Jin is furious all over again, lol.
Third Couple: Xiao Cong (the maid) likes Chu Xiu Yuan. Chu Xiu Yuan is a piece of wood when it comes to love though. He gave away the coat she sewed for him to Mao Zi Tou right in front of her.
Fourth Couple: Princess Ma Ya and that male servant??
[Ep10] Chu Xiu Ming and Shen Jin have a date night. A crowd has gathered to watch a street performance but Shen Jin can't see anything behind all the people. Chu Xin Ming is tall enough to see so he doesn't understand why she can't see anything. He snickers to himself when she's jumping up and down to catch a glimpse. Shen Jin crouches down to jump as high as she can. Chu Xiu Ming crouches down with her to pick her up. Tang Min is a little surprised but very pleased. As she's enjoying the show at a new height, unconsciously, she's twirling his hair. Chu Xiu Ming feels it. He stares up at her with love. I like this detail.
Jealously for Shen Jin hasn't once stopped. Princess Ma Ya is still a headache for Shen Jin because she thinks Ma Ya is determined to marry Chu Xiu Ming. Our couple argue over this especially when Shen Jin suggests to have Chu Xiu Yuan marry Princess Ma Ya. Chu Xiu Ming assures Shen Jin he'll only marry her but Shen Jin is afraid. She thinks her happiness will disappear. She must protect her love.
Angered at how Chu Xiu Ming looked more compatible with Princess Ma Ya (in terms of fighting skills), Shen Jin confronts Chu Xiu Ming but he doesn't back down. To him, she went over the line by locking Princess Ma Ya and Chu Xiu Yuan in the same room to hook them up.
Shen Jin holes herself up in her own room, refusing to see Chu Xiu Ming or eat. She regrets refusing both though. At night, she sneaks into the kitchen to look for food. She overhears Chu Xiu Ming speaking with the maid. It turns out he ordered the maid to prepare food for her to steal. The maid asks him why he doesn't tell Shen Jin the truth. Chu Xiu Ming has his reasons. When the time comes, he will tell her everything and withhold no secrets from her. The maid wonders if he'll stay the night. Nope. He'll return to the training site. There's no point in staying if his lady refuses to see him.
Shen Jin regrets it. She runs to Chu Xiu Ming's training camp. He's depressed too but that disappears when she enters his tent. She apologizes to him. She should believe him. She confesses to being so jealous, she lost her mind. He hugs her tightly.
Chu Xiu Ming: I was scared to death. I thought you came to say goodbye. I didn't dare say a word, afraid that you would really leave. I also don't have any reason to convince you to stay.Shen Jin: You do. Because you are Chu Xiu Ming.
Shen Jin tells her she knows there's something he's hiding but she'll wait until he's ready to tell her. Right after she finishes her sentence, his lips are on hers. He's relieved he understands her. I have no idea what happened during the night because they're back hand in hand in the morning. Princess Ma Ya is leaving with a man. He is the servant, Yuan Er. They had a thing a while back already and hit it off the night they drank. They're cute. Watching how lovely they are, Shen Jin envies them a bit. Chu Xiu Ming gives her a back hug.
Chu Xiu Ming: Jin Er, I only belong to you. In my eyes, all other girls' virtues –Shen Jin: What other girls' virtues?Chu Xiu Ming smiles: ...cannot compare to my Jin Er's scowl or smile, words or movements.
Shen Jin wants him to sign and stamp on those words. He puts his forehead to hers. She kisses him. Signed and stamped.
Third Couple: Chu Xiu Yuan is still as brick as ever. But who's brickier then him? Mao Zi Tou. He thinks Xiao Cong likes him.
[Ep11] Rou Rou and Xiao Su remind Shen Jin and Chu Xiu Ming respectively that they haven't had a wedding ceremony. Shen Jin and Chu Xiu Ming run towards each other.
Shen Jin and Chu Xiu Ming: Let's get married.
Lovely. Except, Chu Xiu Ming wants to stay low about it and Shen Jin wants to make it grand. He convinces her that she needs to consider Xiao Su. He's a dead man. They can't make so much noise with their wedding when there's unknown forces trying to destroy them. Shen Jin agrees to a simple quiet wedding but every ritual must be performed. They stamp and sign on it.
It's the wedding night and it's beautiful despite being simple. After they finish the bows. He guides her over the bridge with the red bow. Remember that night he guided over the bridge with his white belt? Well, now everything is red. She asks him why he stopped here. Chu Xiu Ming is giving her his wedding vows.
Chu Xiu Ming: I promise I will accompany Jin Er each year at every age. Cherry blossom petals float down from the sky. We will watch peach blossoms, the spring rain, and the summer sun. Water lilies pass under the bridge. I will be with Jin Er day and night like butterflies love their flowers. Leaves start falling. We will admire the autumn sky and lake. In winter snow and ice, I will protect Jin Er from the cold and the heat. I will love her until old. Each of Jin Er's spring, summer, fall, and winter will be guarded by me. Each year, each season, each hour, and each moment, I will protect you forever. Jin Er, will you marry me?*

*T/N: Chu Xiu Ming's wedding vow is like 20+ Chinese idioms in one big blurb. My translation is at most 70% accurate. It's a lot more eloquent in Chinese and it took me a long time to translate this already. I hate having to pause, rewind and play every second. I don't have the time, patience, or ability to translate this fully. There's a ceiling to my Chinese knowledge. Hopefully, whoever is subbing this will have the beautiful linguistic skills to give his lines the English equivalent.
Chu Xiu Ming pulls on the red bow, diminishing the distance between them. He kisses her.
Back in their room, Shen Jin is making Chu Xiu Ming write down his every word for the wedding vow. Lol. He wants to sleep though (obviously that entails more than just closing his eyes) but he dares not disobey his wife. They sign and stamp the wedding vow (literally).
Chu Xiu Ming: My lady, what are you going to do to your captive now?Shen Jin: Then tell me, did I capture your body or did I capture your heart.Chu Xiu Ming: Body and heart.
Next morning, Shen Jin happily takes her soup, the one that will make her have babies easier.
Xiao Su has something to inform Rou Rou something that she must not, ever, ever, ever tell Shen Jin. Rou Rou agrees. He tells her 9th Princess is here to oversee Chu Xiu Ming's army. There's another Princess threatening Shen Jin's happiness. Immediately, Rou Rou tells everything to Shen Jin. Lol, I'd say Rou Rou is loyal. Shen Jin calmly confronts 9th Princess that she and Chu Xiu Ming are in love. She asks her to not marry him. 9th Princess admires and envies her love. She too had a love story but it ended bitterly. Her lover is Su Chen, an imperial guard. However, he was almost punished to death for his relationship with her. 9th Princess begged three days straight for the Emperor to spare his life. Su Chen keeps his life but he's banished from the city, never to return.
By the way, there's this mysterious cloaked man who's ordering the palace people to harm Chu Xiu Ming.
[Ep12] Chu Xiu Ming stops 9th Princess from entering his manor. He's doing it out of love for Shen Jin even if it means angering the Emperor. To Chu Xiu Ming's surprise, Shen Jin denies everything: they don't actually love each other. She even claims Chu Xiu Ming divorced her. What, lol. Chu Xiu Ming is speechless as Shen Jin takes 9th Princess into her home.
Shen Jin's plans are to regain her reputation after her embarrassing jealous antics with the previous princess but more importantly, she wants to help 9th Princess and her lover. Meanwhile, Chu Xiu Ming thinks she's testing his love for her. The direction of this story is throwing me off my balance. 9th Princess's arrival is actually to make Chu Xiu Ming jealous, haha. Shen Jin is so nice to 9th Princess, her neglect of Chu Xiu Ming makes him boil with anger.
Chu Xiu Ming retaliates. He too turns all nice to 9th Princess to purposely make Shen Jin jealous. However, to him, all hints are pointing to Shen Jin not loving him and perhaps marrying him for money. We obviously know that's not the case; Shen Jin is trying to collect money to help 9th Princess elope. Chu Xiu Ming doesn't know, but to him, it doesn't matter if she's marrying him for money. He's already deeply in love with her. If her love for him is materialistic, then so be it. He injures himself just to retrieve Ling Zhi (a very expensive fungus) to indulge his lady on her materialistic needs.
Chu Xiu Ming is also led to believe his lady has an incurable disease. He loves her no less. He hugs her tightly and that's when Shen Jin realizes he's injured. She gives him medicine to drink. Casually, she asks him about 9th Princess. He assures her he only loves her. Chu Xiu Ming kisses her. Shen Jin notes that the kiss is sweet but the taste is bitter. It's from the medication. She wonders how he could drink something so bitter. Because anything she gives him is sweet. Those are Chu Xiu Ming's words.
Chu Xiu Ming: Allow me to sweeten it for you.Chu Xiu Ming kisses her again.
[Ep13] Chu Xiu Ming still thinks Shen Jin is to die soon.
Chu Xiu Ming: Once you're in my arms, nothing can hurt my Jin Er. No matter if it's somewhere dark or any other place, I'll recognize Jin Er and can find Jin Er whether you're beautiful or old. As long as you are my Jin Er, I'll love you just the same.
Shen Jin is touched at how romantic he is. She has no idea he's holding back his tears while hugging her tightly. Eventually Chu Xiu Ming learns of her plans and plays a tiny prank on her (he captured 9th Princess's lover). Soon, he joins in on her plans.
The only person left in the dark about Shen Jin's "illness" is Chu Xiu Yuan. He thinks Shen Jin has recovered from her illness but has complications (it's just her period that's late). Xiu Yuan lectures Chu Xiu Ming for being lax. What if you can't hear her voice anymore and will have to live a lonely life for the rest of your life? How sad would that be? Those are Chu Xiu Yuan's words. He orders Chu Xiu Ming to dote her more, and love her more. Chu Xiu Ming listens to his advice seriously. Chu Xiu Yuan is cutely anxious for being an outsider.
The other person left in the dark is Rou Rou. She's left out on their plans to help 9th Princess elope. Rou Rou sees multiple Chu Xiu Mings and Shen Jins that night. She thinks it's her own problem for eating too much.
Emperor gets news of 9th Princess's "death" but Emperor knows his daughter is alive. He sighs and hopes that his daughter can be happy elsewhere.
[Ep15] With Shen Jin as Hu Te's hostage, Chu Xiu Ming doesn't dare fight him. Hu Te blames him for killing his father but Chu Xiu Ming's father also died in that battle. Fortunately, Princess Ma Ya settles the issue for them because Hu Te is loyal to Princess Ma Ya. The two men resolve their differences.
Ta Rou asks Chu Xiu Yuan if he's ever loved her just a bit. Chu Xiu Yuan doesn't understand love. He also doesn't understand how she can abandon her one and only brother to be with him. Chu Xiu Yuan reveals his parents have died when he was young. So he's the son of Chu Xiu Ming's aunite. Family means a lot to Chu Xiu Yuan.
Shen Jin hugs Chu Xiu Ming that night. She feels bad for him and what he's been through during all those battles. He's okay though. He has her now. She's warmed up his cold soul. She gives his life meaning. Shen Jin changes the topic to how Princess Ma Ya and Yuan Er are about to be parents. Chu Xiu Ming smirks knowing what she wants. He teases her a bit by pretending to not understand. But soon his lips are on her forehead, then her nose, then her mouth, then...well.
Shen Jin bought new clothes to try on (it's the style of clothes from Princess Ma Ya's country) but she's shy about showing it to Chu Xiu Ming. The clothes are a little bit revealing. With a bit of encouragement from him, she shows it and he loves it. He carries her to bed and the first thing he does is take her feet into his lap. He warms up her toes. She must be cold standing there bare feet waiting for him.
For their 100th day anniversary (which Chu Xiu Ming remembers), he gives Shen Jin a jade. It's from his Auntie who passed away. The jade is meant for the woman he loves. He also shares his family secret with her. Auntie is the consort of Eighth Prince. He was the Crown Prince but they were murdered. Their son is Chu Xiu Yuan. Therefore Chu Xiu Yuan is the current Emperor's grandson. Chu Xiu Ming's mission is to restore Xiu Yuan's rightful identity and to solve the mystery behind Eighth Prince's death. Shen Jin promises to keep his mission a secret and to take his mission on as hers.
[Ep16] Xiao Su reports to the Emperor with proof of Chu Xiu Ming's embezzlement. He's summoned back to the city. Chu Xiu Ming makes his testimony and with other ministers proving his character, Chu Xiu Ming clears his name. Meanwhile, Shen Jin is bullied by her sisters to make dinner for her entire family all alone. Wittingly, Shen Jin introduces barbecuing where one does not need to cook. Shen Jin gets through that obstacle but her sisters continue to bully her. Chu Xiu Ming arrives to rescue his lady. He threatens the life of anyone who dares harm a piece of hair of his precious Jin Er. He also impresses her family.
Third Couple: Mao Zi Tou confronts Xiao Cong for liking him. I don't know who this third couple is anymore. Perhaps Mao Zi Tou will win over Xiao Cong, heh.
[Ep17] Although Chu Xiu Ming brings glory to Shen Jin in her home, her father has a new youthful wife (Bai Lady). Shen Jin's mother is further neglected and bullied by this new wife. This wife and the sisters are constantly at her throat. Chu Xiu Ming helps Shen Jin manoeuvre through their craftiness. Chu Xiu Ming isn't just skilled in military but also family women affairs. He's perfect.
This episode, Chu Xiu Ming has more romantic lines. Marrying Shen Jin is the one thing that makes his life perfect. Shen Jin reminds him that his cheesy lines don't fit his Devil General title. Chu Xiu Ming counters that the devil is someone else. "If anyone mentions the Devil General, it means the both of us. You are the General's little devil." I take that to mean they are one entity whenever someone refers to his title. Shen Jin likes the sound of that. She asks him what about her title/nickname. He ponders and calls her "Jin Er Little Devil." He uses a finger to brush her nose bridge and she immediately bites down on his finger and won't let go. She's indeed his little devil.
[Ep19] Chu Xiu Ming had helped Shen Jin navigate through her family affairs and now Shen Jin returns the favour to help her idiotic husband navigate through politics to help him investigate into the Eighth Prince's death. To thank her, Chu Xiu Ming offers his body (flesh and skin) for Shen Jin to take him whichever way she wants. He lies there ready for her to take action. Shen Jin hits him, "Your entire body is mine, what do you mean flesh or skin." He corrects himself by changing up his attitude and he'll initiate whatever she wants. She shows her one cheek. He kisses it. She shows him the other cheek. He kisses it. She shows him her forehead. He kisses it but he also kisses the rest of her face.
Shen Jin wants to be a career woman. Chu Xiu Ming is supportive of her. He brings her lunch but she tells him to refrain from that from now on because she wants to be independent. Chu Xiu Ming happily agrees. He's so obedient.
Extra Scene: Chu Xiu Ming promises to give Shen Jin money to support her business. It doesn't matter to him if she'll profit or not. Cheerfully, she asks him if he has any other hidden money. Chu Xiu Ming's expression freezes. He has. Ha. He also refuses to continue the conversation.
[Ep20] Shen Jin uses her reputation as Chu Xiu Ming's wife to help her elder sister gain footing in her family. That sister is bullied by her family. The mistress even made her have a miscarriage.
There's a new character: Ruo Nan. She's Shen Jin's childhood friend. She's also Shen Jin's business competitor. Her store is right across from hers. More importantly, Ruo Nan is the girl who saved Chu Xiu Yuan when he was young. She is the one his heart belonged to ever since then. Ah, so the second couple is Xiao Cong and Mao Zi Tou.
[Ep21] Chu Xiu Yuan has made up his mind to marry Ruo Nan. Chu Xiu Ming is against it because Xiu Yuan has a grander life mission. Chu Xiu Ming confronts Ruo Nan to leave Chu Xiu Yuan alone. This makes Shen Jin misunderstand that there's something between Ruo Nan and Chu Xiu Ming. Meanwhile, this also ruins the little hope Chu Xiu Ming had of winning Ruo Nan's heart.
All the misunderstandings eventually resolve but Shen Jin is mad at Chu Xiu Ming for a new reason now. She doesn't like him meddling in Chu Xiu Yuan's relationship with Ruo Nan. She tries to persuade him otherwise but he's determined that Xiu Yuan cannot waste his time on love. This tremendously offends Shen Jin because that means their love is a waste of his (Chu Xiu Ming's) too. He stutters, claiming he didn't mean it that way.
[Ep22] Ruo Nan uses her profit to support poor villagers so that they can create a living for themselves. Shen Jin goes home to tell Chu Xiu Ming how amazing Ruo Nan is. She just can't seem to stop talking about her and this makes Chu Xiu Ming jealous. He pulls her in for a kiss. She tells him to stay on task about important matters. He uses her tactic to accuse her of calling their own love matters unimportant. He then kisses her and bites her lips to get his revenge. Lastly, he picks her up to bed for the last bit of the sweet revenge.
However, their problem is still there. Chu Xiu Ming is against Chu Xiu Yuan and Ruo Nan's relationship (that hasn't even happened yet) and it angers him more that Shen Jin will take Ruo Nan's side over his.
[Ep23] Shen Jin ran away from home to live at her parents. She's constantly fighting her sisters and this time the fight escalates. The sister slaps the younger sister and so Shen Jin slaps the first sister back. This angry sister pushes Shen Jin. She falls to the ground and hits her stomach. She clutches her stomach in pain. Chu Xiu Ming gets news of this and he finds out Shen Jin is pregnant. The physician comes out after checking Shen Jin but he keeps mentioning how to care for the fetus. Chu Xiu Ming is worried for his wife. He wants to know how Shen Jin is. She's okay. She's still mad at Chu Xiu Ming though.
Chu Xiu Ming stands outside the restaurant to wait for his lady. She walks past him but he's still motionless. Sighing, she turns around to confront him. Before she utters a word, he has her tightly in his arms, "I miss you." With that hug and those words, her mood is much better. She's still giving him a hard time though. He follows her all the way back to her store and takes her in for another hug. She shyly looks around to an empty store and tells him to stop. He's like, you're afraid of letting fabric see us kiss? Pft.
[Ep24] Chu Xiu Ming is still appeasing his lady. He feeds her a small fruit. She takes it herself and claims it isn’t sweet. He’s like, oh really?Kisses her and takes the fruit out of her mouth with his mouth. He takes a moment to taste it and says it’s absolutely sweet.
At night, Chu Xiu Ming gets his way to stay and sleep in the bed with Shen Jin. He snuggles in with her. She tells him he can’t move. Now that he’s close to her, of course he doesn’t want to move. She turns around and he puts his hand around her arm. She smiles and holds his hand. I like how the drama focuses in on the detail of her finger playing with his hand and how much Chu Xiu Ming likes it just like that scene she twirled his hair. Shen Jin openly forgives Chu Xiu Ming when he sets Shen Jing (youngest sister) in her spot. Chu Xiu Ming directly-indirectly rejects the sister giving her zero hope.
Shen Jin’s eldest sister, Shen Shu, is pregnant again.
With Shen Jin's pregnancy, Chu Xiu Ming won’t let her out of the manor. When Rou Rou arrives, Shen Jin sees hope that she can play outside but she’s here to guard her to stay indoors. While stuck indoors, she gets uninvited guests. Chu Xiu Ming’s relatives are here to give their daughters to Chu Xiu Ming because Shen Jin is pregnant. With ease, Shen Jin repels them far from her manor.
Fifth Couple: Chu Xiu Yuan and Ruo Nan are together. They ask Chu Xiu Ming for his approval. With Shen Jin’s help, Chu Xiu Ming approves their love.
Extra Scene. Rou Rou is alone at night on the rooftop. She asks the lonely dark sky where her Su Su is. Me too.
[Ep25] A random lady claims she’s pregnant with Chu Xiu Ming’s child. Shen Jin sees through it immediately and tells her to scat. It’s Shen Jing pulling the strings after being embarrassed by Chu Xiu Ming. She even motivates Shen Zi to speak out for her own ‘rights’ that she was supposed to be the General’s wife. Thus, Shen Zi exposes to the Emperor that Shen Jin lied about about being the second daughter. Now the whole family is arrested for lying to the Emperor.
Shen Shu decides to leave secretly to not bring harm to her own family. Her husband stops her and asks why she’s not waiting for him. If I bothered labeling, these two would be the sixth couple.
Extra Scene. Shen Jin’s parents ask how she knew immediately that the lady was lying about her pregnancy. Because it's Chu Xiu Ming. That's Shen Jin's reason. The first wife (Consort Rui) skeptically stares at Shen Jin’s dad. Ha.
Chu Xiu Ming and Shen Jin take refuge at Ruo Nan’s village. Chu Xiu Ming finally acknowledges Ruo Nan. Also, Chu Xiu Ming is finally back on track with his investigation on Eighth Prince’s death.
Extra Scene. The mute doctor is related to Eighth Prince’s death. I think he’s a good guy though.
[Ep28] It was all within Chu Xiu Ming's plot to make Liu Lord believe he is working with them by fooling his own people (Chu Xiu Yuan and Shen Jin). Liu Lord and his clan are caught.
The mute doctor isn't just related to Eighth Prince's death, he is the Eighth Prince and therefore Chu Xiu Yuan's father. He overheard everything between Chu Xiu Ming and Chu Xiu Yuan and that's why he revealed his identity. The three of them try to brainstorm what happened in the past and who attempted to kill Eighth Prince. They think it might be the Emperor. However, Chu Xiu Ming tells them he had made a deal with the Emperor. The Emperor had allowed him to save Shen Jin from prison but he must help him catch the group that's trying to overthrow him. That's when the Emperor reveals to Chu Xiu Ming that it was him (Emperor) who had placed Chu Xiu Yuan in his care. The confusing part is if the Emperor is on Chu Xiu Ming's side, why is the palace still after them?
Shen Jin cannot accept Chu Xiu Ming for lying to her and keeping her out of his world. If she hadn't overheard the conversation, he would have never told her about Eighth Prince. He doesn't deny any her claims.
[Ep29] Rou Rou is pregnant. But she's not married yet. Shen Jin plans a marriage for her. Chu Xiu Yuan is assigned the task to force Xiao Su to marry but Xiao Su is like I haven't even proposed yet. Chu Xiu Yuan won't hear a word of his because he can't approve of Xiao Su's action BUT it was actually Rou Rou who lied at being pregnant. LOL. Our smart Rou Rou arrives to her motive and marries Xiao Su with everyone's blessings.
Palace and Emperor stuff. Lord Si Tu tries to kill the Emperor with a crystal ball that blasts. However, Chu Xiu Ming and Eighth Prince have sneaked into the palace. Chu Xiu Ming alone can take an entire army of Lord Si Tu's. Soon, Xiao Su arrives with soldiers. However, Lord Si Tu is not afraid. He had kidnapped Shen Jin. She's stuck in a well like place, Sand keeps filling in and if Chu Xiu Ming doesn't find her in time, she'll suffocate in the sand.
[Ep30] Chu Xiu Ming manages to find Shen Jin but he falls into the secret passage too and now they're both stuck together in the sand. Shen Jin smiles seeing him though. She reminds him when she first entered his manor, she asked him for three favours. She still has one favour left. She uses it now.
Shen Jin: No matter what or when or how, I, Shen Jin, want to be with you, Chu Xiu Ming, forever. Even in death I want to be together with you.
His emotions burst. He can't let her die. He must save her. He has to save her. Does Xiao Su manage to open the secret chamber to save them? Light suddenly appears from the top. Xiao Su does open the secret chamber's doors.
Scene skip. An innocent eunuch is stuck between Eighth Prince and the Emperor. They both push the imperial jade seal to the other for the Emperor position. Neither of them want to be the Emperor. Chu Xiu Yuan saves the scene and the Emperor pushes the position to Chu Xiu Yuan. Eighth Prince is like, Wait, you have children too, why not give them the position? The Emperor replies, "Why would I harm my children like that? Heh. Let's have some drinks bro." And the matter is settled. The Emperor is now Chu Xiu Yuan.
Couple updates: Xiao Cong and Mao Zi Tou are married. Rou Rou is three months pregnant. Chu Xiu Yuan is the Emperor and therefore his wife, Ruo Nan is the Empress.
Main couple. Shen Jin is happily planning to leave to the military site with Chu Xiu Ming but all plans are cancelled when she's about to give birth. Everyone scrambles. Only Dad is calm. He's smug with himself that he chose the right daughter to marry the general.
Extra scene (1). 'Shen Jin' is asleep at her laptop. She's a screenwriter. 'Chu Xiu Ming' is about to wake her up but hesitates on touching her so he knocks on the table instead. I have quotations around the names because at this point we're still not sure if those are their names. He introduces himself as Xiao Ming. He's a PD working for Director Wu (the real director of the drama). He's shy at first but soon tells her to hurry up with the script for General's Lady. She tells him to sit and smiles up at him. There's love in her eyes. She asks for his name, his full name. It's Chu Xiu Ming. She laughs and changes the entire script's main character's name from Wu Xi Ze to Chu Xiu Ming. Wu Xi Ze is the real name of the actor for Chu Xiu Ming.
Extra scene (2). Shen Jin's script is brought to life; we're back to the Shen Jin and Chu Xiu Min we're familiar with. Their son is a mini warrior who vows to protect the country. This extra scene was hinted in the first extra scene in Shen Jin's laptop. The document's title was "Extra Scene 2" and all the lines are the same.
Remarks
[First Impression (Ep1-5)] I love this image in the opening credit. They blink at the same time too. Anyways. This is the work of the director, Wu Qiang. He's the one behind the Well Intended Love Series, and Well Dominated Love. Is there a connection between the dramas to this one? No. I wouldn't have known it was the same director if his name wasn't obviously written there in the opening credit.
So far, I like this. It's light and romantic. The couple is the bickering type and the FL is smart. This gets romantic pretty quick for a 30-episode drama. The story reminds me of Legend of Yun Xi among the many that uses a forced marriage between a lady and a rumoured evil general who assumes his bride is an espionage. She has the uncanny ability to open any lock and that helps our ML unlock his past which may have something to do with her mother. She confesses to him pretty quickly and he likes her too but he's keeping her at bay because of Past.
[Actors/Actresses] I would love this drama a lot more if Wu Xi Ze (Caesar Wu) is not the male lead. His acting is only slightly better than Yu Meng Long (Alan Yu). I don't mean to drag in Yu Meng Long; it's just he's in "The Moon Brightens for You" that's currently airing. Yu Meng Long is actually improving in that drama given the three episodes I've watched so who's actually better is probably up in the air right now. For both these men, I can't tell the difference when they're touched, angry, serious or pensive. When they're happy, at least there's their mouth that can help. Otherwise they have the same stare everywhere and there's no charisma in them. Do you have a different opinion? Let me know.
If I do finish this drama it's because of Tang Min (and the story). Her character, Shen Jin, is forward with her love. It's refreshing. Her introduction was hilarious. She's also the lead in Chef Hua which I intend to go back to watch when I have time but I obviously don't have time. If Dating in the Kitchen made food look sumptuous, Chef Hua did a better job at it. It's also the same director as Maiden Holmes who I love for making scenes extra romantic.
[Behind the Scenes]
[Ending] The ending is so cute. I thought it was creative. I like the detail where the screenwriter (Shen Jin) changed her main character's name to Chu Xiu Ming after falling in love with him at first sight.
Final Review
[Review] General’s Lady is a romcom that gets sweet, sweeter and even sweeter. It’s six episodes longer than most romcoms but it doesn’t have the typical drag that separates our pair. There’s nothing external that breaks them apart (e.g princesses and jealous sisters). Chu Xiu Ming also has zero relatives to create any family feud. If there’s anything that breaks them up, it’s internal (their trusts and beliefs). But don’t fear the bad because it’s so lightly handled, you’ll barely feel it.
I standby my first impression on Wu Xi Zhe’s acting. I wasn’t moved by him even after finishing the drama. Fortunately, his role doesn’t require a whole lot and it doesn’t impact the drama negatively. It just doesn’t elevate the drama. If I compare my Wu Qiang dramas, this is one of the weaker ones I watched. The previous ones had pretty charismatic, and memorable male leads. Perhaps it’s to exchange for a stronger female lead. Shen Jin is a lot more independent compared to the rest of his dramas. The chemistry is also the weakest but that’s compared to Well Intended Love and The Romance of Hua Rong which aren’t the easiest to beat. I do blame it a bit on the male lead. But that’s not to say that I didn’t find the sweet scenes romantic. I just thought it could have been better.
Rou Rou is the supporting character I like the most. She has these quirky replies to Shen Jin that makes me smirk and laugh. I like all of her scenes.
The ending is a blessing because I honestly did get bored of this drama in the middle. It's so refreshingly done that it leaves an overall great impression for the entire drama. My interest in romcoms usually takes a nosedive when my couples get together early. For General’s Lady, although it was a bit bland in the middle, my nosedive wasn’t steep at all. They stay cute for 90% of the drama. I call that a feat.
