It's made from his blood and is merely a protective bracelet if she has no feelings for him, but if her love for him is carved in her bones and etched in her heart 刻骨銘心 then the Bone Orchid cannot be removed.

| In Ep20, I remember being confused why Xiao Lan Hua touched her hairpin. I know better now. When she had to distract Dongfang Qing Cang from seeing Chang Heng, she had considered using her hairpin. She almost forgot she needed the hairpin or else he could guess her plans. This means she meant it that the Bone Orchid was more important to her. Her instinct was to drop her hairpin, not her bracelet. |
Key. It’s sweet and ironic that Xiao Lan Hua orders Dongfang Qing Cang to not trespass her heart when she had stepped into his heart from the moment they met – his Heart Sea. When Dongfang Qing Cang proposes with a key, it’s like he’s replying to her that she can rightfully trespass his home.

Clips. Our flower-loving orchid is wearing a pair of crescent moons! It’s the first time Xiao Lan Hua wore clips that weren’t flowers. She changed them after Dongfang Qing Cang saved her from Rong Hao and said that no matter where, he can find his little orchid. This is also the episode where she gives him an orchid with a bit of her soul and so she’s wearing the moon that represents him and giving him an orchid that symbolizes her.
Clothes. Our black loving Supreme Lord wore lighter clothes after Xiao Lan Hua kissed him to save him from Rong Hao. (Look at Rong Hao being cupid!). He’s wearing brown and Xiao Lan Hua calls him “Big Wooden Head” for the first time. Fitting, isn’t it?
This man learns to love by example. He’s also such a good listener!
[Peach Blossom]
Being the good listener that he is, Dongfang Qing Cang heard Xiao Lan Hua mumble that she'll find Tao Tao (Peach Peach) to perform a Goddess Scattering Flower Dance (to cheer her up), and so he scatters peach blossom petals for her when she’s homesick. He listens to everything! Xilan spell or not. He takes off his ring to feel her happiness and also to confirm that she is happy.

Xiao Lan Hua packs Dongfang Qing Cang food when she’s sending him away on a boat... then at the mortal realm, he does the same and packs her a pouch of snacks.

[Initiating]
In the beginning, Xiao Lan Hua initiates everything. She clinks Dongfang Qing Cang’s cup in Ep4, she pours him a drink to apologize in Ep19. But in Ep25, it’s Dongfang Qing Cang’s who’s initiating! She’s mad and so he – the lord! – pours her wine to make up and clinks her cup~ He even drinks it, knowing that it’s poisoned (again).

[Giving Presents]
According to Jie Li, Xiao Lan Hua loves anything expensive. In fact brocades and jades would make any girl happy. And so…when Dongfang Qing Cang proposes to Xiao Lan Hua, he gives her the rarities among the rarities (e.g. an invulnerable armour, a priceless pearl, etc). He also gives her the key that can open anything that’s his.
[Collecting Dew Drops]
In the beginning, Dongfang Qing Cang was lazy and used the largest basin to collect as much dew in one go. And made her drink it in one go, lol. The second time around, he uses a small bowl, patiently collecting each drop and then using a spoon to feed to her.
[Protecting Like Dad]
Dongfang Qing Cang learns to love like how his father selflessly loved him. Like his father, Dongfang Qing Cang made Xiao Lan Hua kill him to protect her.
[Extra: Xiao Lan Hua learns from Dongfang Qing Cang Too!]
Dongfang Qing Cang taught her how to be him: “When you don’t know how to deal with someone, then just coldly stare at them, eliciting fear”. This is how she learned to be Xi Yun! But Xiao Lan Hua also mentioned: “If I must be cold and emotionless, then I don’t think I can ever master it” (Ep12). He replied: “Once you expose yourself, 本座 will die” (Ep12). She was right about herself. Her facade broke down when she couldn’t bear Dongfang Qing Cang’s sadness. And he was right about himself too. He dies for her )’:

And why did her garden remain in full blossom when she’s evidently depressed that Dongfang Qing Cang has left? Her health even fully recovered (Ep9). This means happiness isn’t the reason her flowers bloom. It’s love. Then was she already in love with Dongfang Qing Cang as early as Ep5?
Flowers blooming is the sign of Xiao Lan Hua falling in love. Drama subtly included garden scenes (with *shimmer shimmer* sound effects) whenever Xiao Lan Hua is moved.
For Chang Heng, two flowers bloom.
nasty delicious porridge because she was sick. She healed and then he saw her garden in full bloom. He concluded the key to curing her was to make her happy...
...but if happiness is the reason her garden blossomed, then why do her flowers bloom some more (*shimmer shimmer*) when she is clearly sad and Dongfang Qing Cang had to comfort her? (Ep8)

Flowers start budding for Dongfang Qing Cang when he takes her to see her very first sunrise ~ ~
And then at night, her entire garden blossoms for Dongfang Qing Cang! Beat that Chang Heng! For context, in Ep5, Dongfang Qing Cang made Xiao Lan Hua 
Her happy tears are also signs of her melting for Dongfang Qing Cang. (1) He made her cry when he prepared soup just like her shifu. (2) He made her cry again when he said the same line as her shifu (even if remnants of her true soul are placed in thousands and thousands of orchid, he can still recognize her immediately). The third time she cried happy tears, her thoughts were filled with only him – not her shifu. He has become the most important person in her life.

Once Xiao Lan Hua falls in love, she won’t keep anything that belongs to another man. She won’t even touch Chang Heng *Plop*

Si Ming: Xiao Lan Hua, you don’t understand. Love has no right or wrong. Good or evil, immortals or mortals, if you fall in love, then you fall in love.
Xiao Lan Hua: I don’t understand. Is this perhaps “fate”?
Si Ming: This isn’t fate. All that exists is fate, only love is not fate.
Xiao Lan Hua didn’t understand her shifu. But now she does.

[They Married!]
No one can tell tell me otherwise. Before the war, Xiao Lan Hua said that two days was enough to prepare for their wedding. One day later, war was waged. It was cloudy, we couldn’t tell if it was night or day, but after Xiao Lan Hua sacrificed, the sun rose. She asked Dongfang Qing Cang to bring her closer to the sun. Clearly, it’s a new day. Xiao Lan Hua survived until the day they were to marry. |

[Her Love Never Dies Even When She Will Die Again]
Previously, when Dongfang Qing Cang ordered Xun Feng to imprison Xiao Lan Hua, she thought the meat had a hidden message because only Dongfang Qing Cang could have known her so well to give her oily food that she hated. With the same train of logic, “Xi Yun” did everything that was exactly opposite of everything she used to love (accompaniment, the dew water, and the sweet porridge). Her ultimate goal was to make Dongfang Qing Cang believe Xiao Lan Hua is gone and so when she dies again, he won’t cry T_T.

[Xishan Goddess Closing Her Eyes]
Xishan Goddess (the statue) opens her eyes to see Xiao Lan Hua (Xi Yun). Afterwards, her eyes close again, finally resting in peace.[Supermoon]
The Mountain Moon Festival was a supermoon event that happens every one thousand years. Hence the second time they were there, the moon was smaller. I reckon Xiao Lan Hua was holding a grudge for their first date, and so she made Dongfang Qing Cang cry and hang it by himself. (But she was still there on the steps!). And there’s always next time. 500 more years ~ And next time, and next next time.
In Ep1, Xiao Lan Hua already entered Dongfang Qing Cang’s Heart Sea. She touched his chest, and touched his Tree. She gave her purity to him (and her first time – I mean, the kiss). Her purity taught him compassion and love.
In Ep8, they kissed and his frozen barren tree sprouted a leaf!
In Ep23, his Seven Emotions Love Tree blossomed, but it wasn’t at its fullest. It’s only until the very end when Dongfang Qing Cang has survived it all, the love and the heartbreak, does he harness the great ancient power: Glazed Fire. Xiao Lan Hua never weakened him. Her love made him invincible against all evil.

Ending
How did Dongfang Qing Cang survive? He has an indestructible body (mentioned a lot in the first half of the drama) hence why the gods could only seal him in the Haotian Tower and not kill him. His heart blood is in the Bone Orchid that Xiao Lan Hua is nourishing. But there are more reasons than those. Allow me to entertain you with all the theories ~ (Note: some are just for fun)
[Dongfang Qing Cang Is a Tree…?]
Xiao Lan Hua can revive all vegetation. Is that the reason Dongfang Qing Cang revived under her care?

When Xiao Lan Hua kissed Dongfang Qing Cang, she was casting a Xilan Spell on Dongfang Qing Cang!! The Xilan marking reappeared on his forehead. Since Xiao Lan Hua is Xi Yun, she knows about the spell and its effect. At the very end she made her orders: “Don’t leave. Dongfang Qing Cang!” Isn’t she so clever!
[Dongfang Qing Cang Has Always Defied the Natural Order]
If for love, he can defy fate to save Xiao Lan Hua, then he can defy fate to come back to her! It’s Dongfang Qing Cang yo.

Dongfang Qing Cang: 本座 was always number one. What is there to compete?
And so Dongfang Qing Cang came back within 500 years, beating Si Ming, and beating Chang Heng. Si Ming had left Xiao Lan Hua for 500 years from Ep1. Chang Heng also left Xiao Lan Hua for 500 years and when he returned, he pretended he didn’t know her. It was only Dongfang Qing Cang who went straight to Xiao Lan Hua, our Little Orchid, who hates being alone. That’s why he smirked liked that when he said “I’m back” ;). He will now be invincible in her heart. Ha!

Dongfang Qing Cang knows Xiao Lan Hua hates “bitter medicine”. She had told him “When you keep taking medication, it’s habitual so you never feel that the medicine is bitter. But suddenly one day when you were taking the medicine, someone gave you candy. Because of that sweetness, in the future when you drink it, the same medicine, it will be too bitter to swallow. [...] Shifu isn’t here. I guard Siming Hall alone so I never felt lonely, but then you suddenly arrived. You accompany me all day, take me to see the sun, make me porridge, and help me pass my test. I’m afraid I will be used to you. After you leave, I will be lonely again, but now I am that person who tasted the candy and never wants to taste the bitterness again.” So how can Dongfang Qing Cang bear to leave Xiao Lan Hua alone for the rest of her life? (Just as long he doesn’t personally make it for her again! :D)

No wonder his name is Dongfang Yuan Wei (Dongfang Landlord) in Yumengze – the only place without a Siming Pavilion! By the way, there’s a specific name for the Landlord’s (員外) wife: 安人 (an ren). It also means to pacify the people. That is totally Xiao Lan Hua, our Xishan Goddess :)

She also mentioned that she was going to make his wedding crown from the flowers that he planted for her in Cangyan Sea. Moreover, these two always seem to wait in each other’s home.

This time Xiao Lan Hua hugs him. She’s not letting go of him. Ever. At this point she doesn’t know her identity. She’s still the little grass, but she’s the little grass who loves him greatly.
Fate or Not?
In the mortal realm, who is the real Xiao lang? From the Destiny Leaflet, it was easy to assume “Xiao lang (蕭郎)”, where lang means a youthful man, meant Xiao (蕭) Run. But when he was running away from his debtors, he ran past the Feixian Pavilion. He wasn’t the one. And our leads haven’t even interfered with his life at this point. Next, Show led us to Rong Hao who played the 箫 xiao (same pinyin, different meaning the flute-like instrument). But the one who showed up that night was neither the man with the surname Xiao nor the man who played the xiao. It was Dongfang Qing Cang. He was 蕭 lang all along. 蕭 carries the meaning “miserable / desolate / dreary”. This matches Xie Wan Qing’s first impression of Dongfang Qing Cang (hate, respect, and concern; a feud).
In the mortal realm, Xiao Lan Hua was complimenting Xie Wan Qing who must be like a goddess. At this moment, Dongfang Qing Cang glances at Xiao Lan Hua ~ Aw, his eyes give him away! He thinks she’s the one who’s like a goddess. And then Xiao Run thinks the same. But Dongfang Qing Cang had this thought first!
Even if Xiao Lan Hua looks like a clown, Dongfang Qing Cang can only see her – eternally beautifully. That explains his amused smile ~ In Jie Li’s words, “In the eyes of a lover appears Xi Shi (Xi Shi is one of the four legendary Chinese beauties and the prettiest of the four).” 
In Ep6, Xiao Lan Hua had asked Da Qiang to move on from her...
Xiao Lan Hua: Da Qiang, there is no way I can reciprocate your kindness (love).
Dongfang Qing Cang (gravely): 本座 doesn’t need your reciprocation.

[Ep36] Paraphrased from Lord Yun Zhong: It’s the Glazed Fire (琉璃火; liu li huo). It has been lost in ancient times. It is the fire of mercy. One needs to experience the seven emotions (joy, anger, anxiety, consideration, grief, fear, fright), and the eight distresses (birth, age, sickness, death, parting with what we love, meeting with what we hate, unattained aims, and all the ills of the five skandhas (Buddhism)) and still not lose his roots. Only a god with great love and compassion can control this fire.

Episode 9 Dissection
[Dongfang Qing Cang’s Lightning and Thunder]
Dongfang Qing Cang’s wrath is represented by thunderstorms. Before Dongfang Qing Cang even enters the scene to save Xiao Lan Hua, thunder rips through (22:47).
[Ep3 vs. Ep9]
Both are scenes of Dongfang Qing Cang saving Xiao Lan Hua from life and death, but his reactions are light and day.
In Ep3, Dongfang Qing Cang arrogantly takes Xiao Lan Hua in his palms so that she’s not hindering him as he takes down the enemies with ease. Then he drops her to the ground. With his long fingernails, the bloodcurdling Supreme Lord checks her injuries that have afflicted him as well. He tells her, “From now on, you are mine. Your life belongs to me. Your breath belongs to me. Your heartbeat belongs to me. Every drop of blood in your body belongs to me. Without the permission of 本座, do not leave the sight of 本座”
In Ep9, thunder roars and lightning flashes. He’s raging. But first, Dongfang Qing Cang softly catches Xiao Lan Hua, making sure she’s okay. Then he unleashes his wrath. She has become his priority already. He tells her, “I said so. Your life is mine. With me here, no one can hurt you.” Omo. He said “I” so early! Dongfang Qing Cang went from being indifferent to being caring; he went from saying what he means to showing her what he means. At this point, he doesn’t even know his feelings for her are genuine.
[Dongfang Qing Cang Is Angered Again]
Dongfang Qing Cang had no intentions of killing Chang Heng that day. Notice that the sky has cleared up after he saved his Little Orchid. Our lord was no longer as angry. Then Xiao Lan Hua tugged at his robes, shaking her head so that he wouldn’t kill Chang Heng. It was Chang Heng who kept attacking Dongfang Qing Cang. Finally the sky darkens again. Our Supreme Lord is angry again. Is he angry because Chang Heng kept blocking his path or because Xiao Lan Hua asked him to spare Chang Heng?
[Ep8 vs. Ep9]
Contrast Dongfang Qing Cang's anger with Ep8 when he couldn’t care less if Xiao Lan Hua drowned.
In Ep8, Xiao Lan Hua thinks she’s saving Dongfang Qing Cang by hiding in the water. She doesn’t even consider that she can drown. Dongfang Qing Cang closes his eyes, annoyed How can someone be as stupid as this little grass? But he can’t let her die. Sigh. He gives her air, but she pushes him away! She’s going to die from her stupidity! (He doesn’t know she’s making her heart jump out.) He’s irritated but his life is tied to hers. He pulls her in for another kiss. Xiao Lan Hua doesn’t resist this time.
After the kiss, Dongfang Qing Cang’s frozen tree melts and a leaf sprouts! He’s feeling emotions!
He doesn’t know he was feeling his own jealousy when he saw Xiao Lan Hua marry Chang Heng in the Destiny Tree.
If in Ep8, Dongfang Qing Cang was already feeling jealousy, then the reason behind his second angry outburst was likely also jealousy. This is why he wanted to show Xiao Lan Hua that Chang Heng wouldn’t choose her. With a nefarious smirk, Dongfang Qing Cang asks,“Are you going to save her or your Shuiyuntian?” Chang Heng chose Shuiyuntian. Meanwhile, Dongfang Qing Cang always chose Xiao Lan Hua. Every. Single. Time. And. Everywhere. At Shuiyuntian. At Yumengze. At Cangyan Sea.
