Mini Recaps

[Episode 1-4 Brief Summary]

Shen Yi Yi is an orphan adopted into the Shen family. Her sister who's like her best friend, Shen Die Yi, dies. To repay the family's kindness she accepts Shen Die Yi's marriage on her behalf. However, how can she marry her best friend's lover? So to avoid bringing chaos to the Shen family and to stay true to her friend, she connives a kidnap plan.

Tang Jiu Hua is Shen Die Yi's lover. They met ten years ago but have not seen each other since. How they stayed in love for ten years beats me. He's willing to give up the love of his life for her, which is dancing. After hearing his beloved fiancé is kidnaped, he immediately drops everything to find her. And find her he does. Even if his fiancé shows up with sausage lips and intellectually lacking, his love for her is resilient.

Shen Die Yi is actually also an adopted daughter of the Shen family. Both Yi Yi and Jiu Hua want to help Die Yi find her real father and so Jiu Hua suggests they enter Shang Yi Collegiate which means they'll have to postpone their marriage four years later. This Shang Yi Collegiate is an equivalent of a prestigious university where only the wealthiest and the smartest get accepted. Except this embassy only accepts males. Therefore Yi Yi will have to disguise as a man to enrol. However Yi Yi doesn't want to be accepted because she still wants to avoid the marriage at all cost.

Yang Zi An is an imperial constable and our main lead. He's under the Emperor's order to secretly enter Shang Yi Embassy to investigate for corruption. His first encounter with our female lead starts off on the wrong foot when she was on the run from Tang Jiu Hua's marriage. Except Yang Zi An doesn't know that she is a he. From then on they will forever fight over nothing. He's got such a pissy face on all the time for no apparent reason.

Li Xin Yuan is the second Prince who's not loved by the Emperor. He's disguised as a commoner to enter Shuang Yi Collegiate. He's also a very auspicious man and has a hobby of fortune telling. Shen Yi Yi (in a male disguise) had crashed into this carriage to escape from Tang Jiu Hua. Through that small encounter he thinks she's his fated one. But he's a man.. anyways.

The only man out of our F4 cast who has not directly seen our female lead (whether as male or female) is Dugu Mu Xue. He's our swords dude with little words.

And thus our Flower (female lead) is complete with her F4. SYY and YZA are the brains; TJH excels in arts; DGMX in martial arts; LXY in...um money (I don't know yet). LXY feels like the girl in this group of five. By the way, I may interchange between SYY and SDY.

[Ep3] SYY and YZA engage in a chopstick war. I don't really understand YZA's animosity towards her when she never did anything to deserve this nasty attitude from him. Maybe except for groping his chest...
[Ep5] There's a naked bandage scene when YZA is injured. Now Yi Yi has every right to touch his chest if she wanted to. As they're making physical improvements, there are also emotional ones. He joins in when all the other guys give her their portion of tofu. This girl can eat ten portions of food. She also gives him a happy hug and in return she gets a good-girl-pat on the head from him. Hm, Yang Zi An isn't too bad.

[Ep6] I wasn't expecting this development: he's already in love with her. Correction: "him". When a girl (Han Yue Er) confesses to SYY, she uses YZA as her fake lover which throws YZA world's into even more chaos as he's already confused about his sexuality.

[Ep7] The prince, Li Xin Yuan, has a crush on SYY too but he’s luckier. He knows she’s a girl. Three down, one more to go. Even though there are boys to her left and right, YZA, who's right in her dorm definitely has the upper-hand. When she's crying from missing home, YZA's simple comforting presence is enough to make her smile. He also gets to feed her all sorts of food and is secretly amused at all her savoury expressions.

While YZA gets all these chances, he misses the ultimate one. He sees her in female clothes but this idiot thinks she's a man dressed up as a woman. He gets upset all by himself when he's realized she was using him as a shield from another girl's pursuit of love. Didn't he know she was using him from day one? Why be upset now.

[Ep8] It's time for new roommates. She's paired up with Li Xin Yuan. Initially she's against having a new roommate but once she learns of his prince identity and his awareness of her female identity they form a new bond. Meanwhile YZA is continuously upset at her. This time he's upsettingly worried about her after almost drowning. She's smitten by his concern and they have an almost kiss moment. I like that she calls him "Zi".

[Ep9] There's another almost kiss moment. This time there was an actual intention from him. She gave him a drunk confession. But can the manly Zi An accept this love? Not yet. He runs away and dunks himself with cold water. While Li Xin Yuan fully accepts his love but his problem is she doesn't see him as a man even if he (almost) confesses.

It seems like TJH and the girl who keeps pursuing SYY. Han Yue Er, may have a thing? Which makes me  remember TJH loves SDY. Shouldn't SYY tell him by now that his love of ten years has already passed away? He's doing so much for her and she's denying him that truth?
Aside from the romance, the camaraderie between our leads gets a name (Shuang Yi Guang's Five Men) and a signature move (a star).

[Ep10] YZA has to use the most traditional way to prove she's a girl: touch her breasts.

[Ep11] Dugu Mu Xue isn't joining the bandwagon, he's got a love line of his own. At least he now joins the others in knowing SYY is a girl.
[Ep12] Now that YZA knows that SYY is a girl and she knows that he knows, every skinship makes them nervous. This episode, the accidental magical kiss happens sending feathers floating upwards against gravity. After the kiss, they're both awkward. He's feeling his heart that's accelerating for reasons unknown to him. Worried, SYY listens in. He wants to hug her as she's examining his heart but he's a noble. He cannot. He retracts but somehow his hand and her face are like magnets as they find each other. His hand is now caressing her face.

[Ep13] There's a competition and our team of five are each competing in their own expertise: SYY in cooking; YZA in chess; LXY in mathematics; TJH in dancing; Dugu in fighting. However, Han Yue Er jinxes Tang Jiu Hua and he injures his foot. Subsequently he loses his segment of the competition. It was a commendable effort from him. Things just aren't going well for Tang Tang as he realizes SYY's heart isn't facing him.

[Ep14] SYY gives YZA a victory hug.

[Ep15] The professor starts the class with one word: war (two Chinese characters). The students debate over its good and bad. And then class ends. What a waste of taxpayers money for such a prestigious university. However "war" is a continuous topic in this episode. All students enlist in the army to help their country fight. Except none of the men want Shen Yi Yi to enter because she's a girl. Only SYY doesn't understand why she's being left out so she sneakily writes her name on the attendance. It's the night before army training and the students are enjoying a barbecue night. They play a series of game. SYY and YZA lose. As punishment one has to confess to another. The OSTs stand out in this episode for me.

[Ep16] SYY blows away something in YZA's eyes. The man is already distraught with his feeling, her physical proximity doesn't make it any easier. She jokes with him that he wanted to confess to her during the punishment and he grabs her arms sincerely asking her back what if he was serious. She awkwardly walks away to put an end to the conversation. It's not brought up again as war preparations are in the way. The vitamin to this group of hardworking men isn't the only female, Shen Yi Yi, but it is the man with a female's heart, Tang Jiu Hua. However, he's not super happy this episode because he finally learns his beloved Shen Die Yi has passed away.

Remarks

[First Impression (Ep1-8)] Oddly enough the actor who was in Meteor Garden remake (2018) finds himself in another Boys-over-Flowers-type drama. This time as the lead. Concept wise this drama should be exactly my cup of tea. Four men surrounding one girl who's pretty capable herself. I don't find myself in love with it. Perhaps it's because I'm not on board with the female lead's chemistry with any of the men.

[Actors/Actresses] Wang Yu Wen has a solid repertoire however I don't think I like her. I know she acts well and my brain is telling me there's nothing to dislike about her but I just don't like her. The reason is superficial. She's just not pretty..... Xie Bin Bin's Tang Jiu Hua is the most endearing character for me here, especially in the beginning with his unwavering love.

[Dropped] This drama has every formula that I usually adore it just hasn't stirred me emotionally. I didn't finish it but I can sense from what I’ve watched that the rest of this drama will be much better than many two-star dramas I finished watching.

[OST's] There's a nice set of OST's here. I was surprised most of them are sung by the leads. The opening song is a duet by Wang Yu Wen and Wu Xi Ze. It's called "花开的瞬间" (Blooming Moment). The ending song is by Wu Xi Ze. It's called "遥不可及的梦" (Distant Dream). My favourite one is by Liu Yi Chang, "为我骄傲" (Proud of Me). Liu Yi Chang has such a good singing voice and he looked so good in the MV with just a cap on. I don’t know if it’s just me but the male solo songs sound oddly familiar. Wu Xi Ze's sounds like an OST from a Korean drama and Liu Yi Chang's sounds like this old Chinese (canto) song. Regardless, I currently have Proud of Me on repeat.
