Mini Recaps

[Episodes- 4-8] The fox, Feng Jiu, is Di Jun's beloved pet. [Watchable]

[Ep4] Ahhh now I remember how they started. He adores her like a pet fox, ha. Feng Jiu’s role is made for Dilraba or she made this role hers.
[Ep7] Hm. A Li shows up here (the son/daughter? of Bai Qin). This timeline is confusing.
[Ep8] Di Jun is finally looking for his missing fox
The brothers and sisters are in love with the same woman who was disguised as a man. Twisted...

[Episodes 9-21] The mortal realm begins [Not watchable]

[Ep9] Alright, to the mortal realm we go for Di Jun to go through his trial. He's now the crown prince, Song Xuan Ren. Feng Jiu comes to help him battle. She's looking so handsome as a warrior. And is it just me or does he look older with black hair?
[Ep11] Feng Jiu gives him a man-to-man confession lol.
So he falls in love at first sight...that’s so un-Di-Jun-like?
[Ep13] Mortal Di-Jun meets Feng Jiu as a lady and he's oh so in love. This drama is cheating; all the other dramas have to set up why the girl likes the guy but this one already did it in Eternal Love. Certainly a double edge sword. Without the setup I’m also not feeling the buildup to their eternal love.
[Ep14] The lack of buildup makes me feel zero pain for mortal Di-Jun as he's betrayed by her. And then there's another set of flashbacks. Unnecessary.
[Ep15] This whole poisonous cake arc is soooooooooooooooooooooo slow. I figured out why this arc is boring for me. To me, the beauty of their relationship is how unreserved Feng Jiu is in showing her love. The current Feng Jiu looks so depressed holding back her emotions. Boring.
[Ep16] He scratches her behind her ear and she almost purrs. I miss this Feng Jiu. Meanwhile Di Jun, being a fool in love, is ruining my Di Jun image. They kiss, but its one sided. She pushes him away because she knows its not the real Di Jun. Wow, there's zero chemistry in that kiss from her.
[Ep17] Feng Jiu is more Feng Jiu like when she's with Si Ming. She complains to him that this obstacle for Di Jun is more like a challenge for her than him.
[Ep18] Feng Jiu can't resist him anymore. But she's too drunk. Mortal Di Jun doesn't want to take advantage of that.
[Ep20] She's still upset about hurting him. He's still in love. What's really boring about this drama is I can already see this plot in Episode 10 and it takes a whole 10 episodes to actually cover it with zero surprise and zero chemistry.
[Ep21] The general sacrifices his life to save her.
Feng Jiu finally dies by committing suicide.
Mortal Di Jun dies too and his godly self finally wakes up!

[Episodes 22-24] Cameos

[Ep22] Aaaand he doesn't have his memory.
Yang Mi makes her appearance. Zhang Yun Long also appears (as Cang Yi Shen Jun)! I like him.
[Ep23] Cang Yi Shen Jun is now her betrothed.
[Ep24] Cang Yi Shen Jun is no longer her betrothed. Is this it? No more Zhang Yun Long?
Di Jun finally graces his presence in Feng Jiu's territory. He's looking for his fox.

[Episodes 25-33] Di Jun takes initiative (; [Amusing]
[Ep25] Now this is finally getting fun. Di Jun is provoking her now when she's resolute about not loving him. It starts with his cloak dropping on her as he saves her. She quickly takes it off. Puzzled, he asks her: You think my clothes are dirty? Lol. She just doesn't want to make it dirty because that would give her a second chance to see him. Well, that's exactly what he wants. He demands her to clean it for him the next time they meet. Not only that, he gives her this drop dead gorgeous gaze. How can one resist?
[Ep26] Di Jun casually confesses to finding her interesting.
Feng Jiu is drunk and basically tells Di Jun she's the fox that he loved but he doesn't understand. He's probably too busy admiring the beautiful flower he put in her hair. He's treating Feng Jiu like his fox. She's so drunk Di Jun had to personally send her home. Ah Li recounts everything and tells FJ she clawed his cloak away from him. Thus the cloak is destined to be hers. Next time they meet DJ overhears her calling him a psycho (or pervert). She transforms into a handkerchief to hide from him not knowing DJ heard everything. Now she's a defenseless piece of cloth at DJ's whim.
[Ep27] Lian Song and DJ are gossiping about her while she’s still a handkerchief. She falls into the water so DJ puts her over a lamp to heat her up, orrr it’s actually to make her so hot she has to reveal herself? However, the determined FJ withstands the cold, the heat, and even his terrible cooking just to stay hidden from him. When he leaves momentarily, she returns to her human form and recooks DJ’s nasty fish. DJ hangs onto that handkerchief even in his sleep. When she runs away, he tracks her down and personally transforms her back to his silky handkerchief.

[Episodes 29-33] Life at Bi Yi Bird Tribe

[Ep29] FJ expressing her anger at DJ? The mighty DJ?? She's probably the only god who can throw a tantrum at him without being punished. She's angry because he comes to save her pretty late, like half a year late. Meanwhile DJ is pretty nonchalant about it. To appease her, he turns into a handkerchief. Loool. Alas comes the long awaited chance for FJ to torment DJ: she drops him into snow and then ice water; she roughly scrubs him and squashes an orange on him. She’s ready to forgive him except he never actually transformed into a handkerchief! She was deceived. Feng Jiu erupts. She throws the handkerchief at DJ but not without some of her snot in it.
[Ep30] FJ "saves" DJ (her efforts were commendable). DJ suffered a slight injury while protecting her. She thinks he's lying and briskly turns away but DJ shamelessly pull her back to tend to his (small) wound. He also gets jealous of Xiao Yan. What happened to DJ not being able to be in love or is that not a thing anymore in this drama?  Not only that, he makes her lap his pillow. He even wants her to make his hands warm by rubbing them. That night they sleep together hand in hand. Are gods allowed to do that?
Is that leg up necessary?
[Ep31] Feng Jiu is sick and starts crying. Perplexed, DJ lets her hug him as she sleeps. When FJ awakes, she confronts him why he didn't just push her away. He tells her its rare for her to initiate contact, so why not take the opportunity? How long is the misunderstanding that DJ likes Ji Heng going to last? The show even finds an idiot to confirm that DJ likes FJ...
[Ep32] They accidentally kiss. Or more precisely she bit his lip.
[Ep33] This drama is suddenly a normal rom-com where both are misunderstanding each other a heck lot. Their playful banter gets a little too flirtatious as she jumps him on the bed.

[Episodes 34-49] Her new life as Ah Lan Ruo begins

[Ep34] Here I'm wondering why the drama didn't find a prettier girl to act Ji Heng, now I know. Her character sucks. So stupid, so annoying. Nothing like-able, so plain.
[Ep35] Lian Song tells Di Jun everything from FJ being his pet fox to the human he loved. Its too late though. She's in danger and needs saving. DJ feeds her his blood to heal her despite being all injured himself. Feng Jiu finally wakes up. Thinking his sweet appearance is a dream, she pulls him in for a kiss. It's not a dream but she doesn't know it yet. He comes swooping in for another kiss. And they roll in bed. Literally roll in bed. Her hands are cold and its his turn to warm hers. They're still stuck in "Ah Lan Ruo's Dream" and she only has her fox memories. He lies to her that they're married. He doesn't get a lot of time to be happy with her because she's about to lose all her beloved memories of him and live her new life as Ah Lan Ruo.
Note: DJ's beautiful white hair disappears as he is Shen Ye (actually its another character, not DJ)

[Ep36] DJ's beautiful white hair returns as he takes on an alternate persona: Si Ze. This arc is complicated. DJ wants to protect her soul which he suspects is in another pregnant mom's body while his other black-haired-self, Shen Ye, (which may have nothing to do with the actual DJ) is probably in love with Ah Lan Ruo (who is now FJ).

[Ep37] DJ has finally found his Feng Jiu and he's only got eyes for her. Turns out the persona he took, Si Ze, was originally engaged to Ah Lan Ruo. DJ also meets Shen Ye, his "doppelganger".
[Ep38] Black-haired Shen Ye saves Ah Lan Ruo before DJ gets there.
[Ep40] DJ (as Si Ze) pursues her. And admits to being jealous of her ShiFu, Su Mo Ye

[Ep41] What the. I'm so confused. There are THREE Di Jun's in this episode.
Black-haired, disheveled, blue cloaked DJ (the current Shen Ye) seems to know about the previous Ah Lan Ruo's life. He's somehow transcended time and is reliving Ah Lan Ruo's dream.
Black-haired white cloaked DJ (the past Shen Ye) is the man who (the previous) ALR used to love. In the past dream, ALR sacrificed her life to save Shen Ye. ALR never knew he loved her.
And well white haired DJ is still DJ (who's pretending to be Si Ze).
Why is this arc sooooo complicated. At least it is more interesting than the mortal realm.

Su Mo Ye needs Feng Jiu to relive ALR's dream. He needs her to make the same decision as ALR to complete the dream. This means that she needs to sacrifice her life just as ALR did for Shen Ye. (Its funny when FJ wanted to use chicken blood to pretend it was her blood). Except there's a changing factor: DJ. DJ (Si Ze) saves her.
[Ep42] FJ's soul returns to her body. Not only that, so do her memories of DJ, well most of them.
When they finally find each other, he fervently pulls her in for a kiss
Di Jun: Xiao Bai, Don't push me. I'm light headed From lack of oxygen? From kissing her - he rests his head on hers -
He's injured everywhere but he refuses to be physically separated from her. Omg DJ is pouting and whining like a kid. Nononono, I don't want this kind of DJ. However, FJ leaves him to find wood for fire (shouldn't you tend to his wounds first?). Apparently wound tending is second priority. FJ is still on the fence about DJ because girl is still jealous of Ji Heng. We're still talking about Ji Heng.
Di Jun: Xiao Bai, you're still angry at me, is it because I didn't kiss you well enough or that my words aren't sweet  enough - leans in and whispers - forgive me, I don't have a lot of experience.
She's still fizzled with all the memories she just regained thus having a difficult time truly accepting his love. DJ realizes this and backs off reluctantly. They do still have to complete ALR's life to escape her dream. That morning when she wakes up, she's the cute little Feng Jiu (as ALR) chasing her DJ around. So cute. DJ has to leave temporarily to find out the connection between Feng Jiu and Ah Lan Ruo because that's perhaps the key to free her from the dream.
[Ep43] DJ gets super jealous when FJ gives candy to every man, even though she gave DJ the most. He even resorts to stealing Su Mo Ye's candies.
[Ep44] The candy makes him so happy, he professes his love to her that night. He takes her on a date, gives her a flower crown (something only lovers give), and sets magic to the entire city (despite his injuries) for cherry blossoms to rain from the sky. FJ puts a fox mask on him and comments how he looks like he's part of her fox family.
DJ agrees: Mm. I am part of your family (I am yours). DJ really likes being a "family" to her
Di Jun means it literally that he wants her as his family: he proposes to her.
DJ: I want to take you as my Di Hou (his queen)
And then he swoops in for a kiss.

[Ep45] I sort of wish people would just organize a time to sit down and talk about everything that happens to Ah Lan Ruo instead of these bits and piece coming from different people. I didn't realize Zhi Ruo (ALR's step sister who likes Shen Ye) is the current Bi Yi Bird Tribe's queen.
[Ep46] DJ gets extremely sulky when she sees FJ hug Shen Ye. She tries to appease DJ.
FJ: I like you so much, how can I possibly like someone else - kisses his cheek
More kisses ensues. And they spend the night together. They're official. He doesn't want to spend a single day away from her that he burns all the letters that Su Mo Ye has sent for help.
[Ep48] Su Mo Ye and DJ are recovering this magic mirror. This magic mirror tells al. It reveals Ah Lan Ruo's and Shen Ye's love story. Long story short: she dies not knowing he loved her. He doesn't get to spend any time with her before her death. Her stepmom is the mastermind behind it all. Shen Ye wants revenge but Si Ze (not DJ, the real one) prevents it and tells him that if he recovers all of Ah Lan Ruo's souls in the dream, she can be resurrected. The last questions DJ asks the holy mirror, is what is Shen Ye's relationship to himself (because, you know, they're awfully alike).
[Ep49] Shen Ye falls to despair to learn that him and ALR are mere shadows born from DJ and FJ respectively. There's no way ALR can be resurrected because she doesn't actually exist either.  That's horrible to learn that you don't actually exist and the pain you've been suffering from the lost of your love actually isn't worth anything. Ouch. On a happier note, FJ has regained all her memories and hopefully knows that DJ loves her.

[Episode 50 +: Fighting the Demon Clan]

[Ep50] She's back to the regular playful FJ and decides to prank DJ. She feigns amnesia.. DJ plays along and retracts his marriage proposal. FJ gets played by her own joke as she begs and whines for him not to.
[Ep51] Wedding planning has officially commenced. She's busy designing their new home and DJ's busy staring at her.
They're playing hide and seek... and he finds her
[Ep52] DJ bullies whoever bullied his soon-to-be wife. Her family witnesses everything and is bewildered to learn about their new son-in law. Having DJ as son-in-law sounds quite scary, ha. The women in the family are impressed but Dad is reluctant to give away his precious daughter. He only gives in when DJ demonstrates he truly knows how to love FJ. Basically its to spoil her.
[Ep53] DJ doesn't show up for their wedding. FJ thinks DJ chose Ji Heng over her. We're 53 episodes in and we're still mulling over Ji Heng.. Brokenhearted, she also learns she's pregnant with his child.
[Ep54] Some decade, centuries (I don't know) later Bai Gun Gun is born. He's almost smarter than FJ at this age. Like his father, he also has silver hair. While she's raising Gun Gun, or Gun Gun is raising her, lol, DJ is using up all his essence to fight the Devil Clan Ruler, Miao Luo and saving god-kind. There's so many people who know about DJ but no one can take a bit of time to explain things to FJ?
[Ep55] They finally meet again and she's cold to him. She does notice he's more frail. She asks for a divorce but he won't divorce her at all cost. It's as if he's giving her his last words as he tells her to take care of herself well. He kisses her hand and puts a ring in her palm. FJ still thinks he had chosen Ji Heng over her and refuses his ring. Ugh. As she walks away, DJ spits out blood and tears roll down his eyes. He tells his housekeeper, Zhong Lin that he must give her something before he leaves (for good).
DJ: This (ring) she must accept no matter what. When I leave, I must at least leave something for her.
He's even decided on his successor: it's Ye Qing Ti (the General from when he was a mortal). The successor should be someone who has fate with DJ and since Ye Qing Ti received half of FJ's essence, he's the best choice.
So what is happening to DJ? Well, we learn with FJ as all (or most) of the gods gather to smack FJ back to her senses. He's basically been constantly injured throughout the drama from battling the Demon Ruler to saving FJ from ALR's dream to taking Ji Heng's poison upon himself. I've simplified it; the way Si Ming explains it, it sounds like DJ has made the utmost sacrifice to protect FJ at all cost, placing her safety above his. And now he has to have a final battle with the Demon Ruler in his weakened state. Basically he's going to die fighting her.
And then its Zhong Lin's, DJ's housekeeper, turn to lecture her. I almost cried when he harshly reminded her the cold words she told DJ. He tells her that she placed DJ in a difficult position to explain himself, never trusting him. I agree. If he did explain, she'd feel bad for the rest of her life. And why explain if he was going to die anyways. He tells her that DJ even used his powers (whatever that is left of it) and half his heart (literally) to make that ring that FJ rejected. It's a ring that will protect her even if he's gone. It's also a present she requested of him way back when to prove his love to her.

And then there's their fate business. Back in Season one it was said that DJ's name is not on this rock hence he does not have any romantic fate in his life. Forgive me, my memory fails at recalling the right way to name that rock. Here, DJ had asked about his fate and at first it showed no fate, but then it changed to yes fate and then it turned back to no fate. However, DJ will do whatever he wants, who cares about that anyways, he's DJ. He will go against fate if it's for FJ.
[Ep56] Demon Lady and Di Jun have a showdown. Must Gods battle one on one? Where's all the other gods? Where's Ye Hua? Where's Bai Qing? FJ is able to enter the barrier whereas no other gods can because of the ring. DJ wants her to leave but FJ convinces him that they've been through so many obstacles and yet they're still together, aren't they therefore destined to be together? Apparently FJ`s fox blood can detoxify demons. And thus they fight together. And die together. Their oozing blood mix and this magical boom happens and everything is peaceful. They don't die.
Di Jun finally meets his son. Ha. I don't think I've ever seen Di Jun shocked. And the three of them live happily ever after.

Remarks

Low Rating: I don’t like it when dramas lack continuity. There’s exactly two arcs that are watchable and the rest were skippable. The villain, Ji Heng, is boring and annoying. She's the only love obstacle for the whole entire drama and she's not even a convincing rival but she's got Feng Jiu boiling with jealousy every single time. I scratch my head and ask why every time.

What fuelled me to watch this is my love for Feng Jiu and Dong Hua Di Jun. When they’re happy, it's almost as if I'm watching a normal rom-com. But the problem is I wasn’t expecting a normal rom-com from these two. I'm expecting some high end godly love like Eternal Love or Love and Destiny. This drama is no where near their level. Not just in terms of romance but the exquisiteness to story-telling was lacking. The misunderstandings that drove the plot were distasteful. And then there's the cast. Eternal Love and Love and Destiny had an amazing ensemble, so many memorable characters. This drama had none (minus the ones that were already established since Eternal Love). It just had a whole sleuth of famous cameos that left zero impressions.

Giving this a two-star was pitying myself for having gone through 56 episodes of this. Prior to watching this, I did prepare myself for the worst and still I was disappointed. Very early on I already knew this won’t be any good for me but I casually watched the rest to tie the knot between Feng Jiu and Di Jun. Now that I know their ending, I guess I’m okay. At least it's a happy one and it satisfied my curiosity to know that they'll be happily in love regardless of fate.

Rating2/5
