The Imperial Doctress Episode 33 to Episode 38

Another war has started and Qi Zhen is still a hostage. However, this time he’s smarten up. He’s finally grown out of puberty as he toughens up with each setback. Even Yun Xian is dazzled by his charms, but does she know it? Whether she loves him or not, it’s a fact that she’ll die for him.

Spoiler: Those who want to see the cow scene, it's in Episode 34.

Edit: Whoops, this is a summary of Episode 33 to 38 (not 39)

[Episode 33] The remaining soldiers all lose trust in Yun Xian except Zhou Qiang. Other names to remember amongst the soldiers are Huo Guang and Li San. Qi Zhen won’t accept Yun Xian’s gender being an issue. He’s like, if there’s anyone they should trust the most, it’s Yun Xian. I agree! I’m also very glad Qi Zhen recognizes she's more superior to him. ^^” Yun Xian is grateful for Qi Zhen’s devoted trust. She tells him he’s the only person who has ever trusted her entirely, even her grandmother couldn’t. This, I’d say, is her first confession to Qi Zhen because she’s slowly falling for his charms and she doesn't know it yet. And then after about a few minute drama time, we get a 180 turn as all the soldiers love her again and apologize for their idiocy. I simply cannot follow.

Yun Xian also has the favour of Princess Tuo Bu Hua and Ye Xian. However Doctor Cheng is trying to persuade Ye Xian to not trust Yun Xian’s witchery. Yun Xian’s not afraid to look down on Ye Xian for trusting an idiot like Doctor Cheng and I think Ye Xian loves being yelled at by her. Or maybe I just like them arguing. And the drama really likes to show off how amazing Yun Xian is to have the nerve to yell at anyone despite them being of royalty. Eventually Ye Xian comes to realize Doctor Cheng is the real trash and throws him away (temporarily).

Qi Zhen comes across the Princess only to probe her about Yun Xian’s wellbeing (who’s in Ye Xian’s care). He becomes very interested in the perfume pouch she’s carrying because Yun Xian had made it for her. Naive Princess thinks he likes it because of her so she gifts the pouch to him.

Later Qi Zhen is forced to feast with the Mongolian King who wants to gain reassurance that he is better than Ye Xian. All kings have problems of being usurped. When Qi Zhen isn’t willing to kneel to him, the Mongolian King brings in Yun Xian (who’s only paying her respect to Qi Zhen) and forces her to drink.

[Episode 34] It’s either she drinks or Qi Zhen kneels. Qi Zhen chooses to kneel but it’s only a farce, which doesn’t get very far because the guards catch him trying to steal a sword from them. Then it’s Yun Xian’s turn to steal the sword. Yun Xian’s not strong enough to kill the men so she threatens to kill herself. Was drinking that bad? How is her committing suicide even a threat? The gazes between her and Qi Zhen look like love to me here. Anyways, Ye Xian comes in time to stop the commotion by telling everyone Yun Xian is his woman so now one can hurt her.

Ye Xian almost rapes Yun Xian but she protects herself with her knowledge on herbs and irritants. At this point, he’s not exactly in love with her yet (even though there is some degree of like there), he was just trying to stir jealousy among Qi Yu and Qi Zhen or so he claims. He says it’s a war tactic…

After she barely manages to fend off Ye Xian, Qi Zhen finds her and comforts her in his arms. Ye Xian becomes jealous of their relationship and out of fury he reveals to Qi Zhen he no longer is the Emperor. The shocking news makes Qi Zhen spit out a massive load of blood.

Yun Xian manages to control his condition to some degree but there’s a little obstacle in delivering the medication so Princess takes initiative to personally deliver it with her mouth. It’s a kiss.

However, that’s still not enough and so the last resort was to rely on Mongolian medicine and put him inside a (dead) cow. I don’t even. He recovers…

[Episode 35] When Qi Zhen has recovered his consciousness, he’s still delirious from Qi Yu taking over his reign. What happened to his trust for his bro? Ye Xian rushes his plans to attack Beijing while Qi Zhen is still alive because he’s the key to opening the gate. And so war is on but Qi Zhen is still delirious. Of course, Yun Xian is the only one who manages to bring him back to reality and to protect the innocent lives lost in the war. Qi Zhen then convinces Bo Yan to spare the peasants.

When Qi Zhen is used as a hostage to force the soldiers to open the gate, he gets a chance to talk to Qi Yu and he reassures Qi Zhen he will return the position once he returns. Their brotherly love returns. Then Qi Zhen becomes very manly as he singlehandedly takes down all the men around him. He even takes down Doctor Cheng, who was called out to try to convince the soldiers to open the gate. I’m so glad Doctor Cheng is forever gone from my screen. Ye Xian manages to corner Qi Zhen but lightning strikes him down and he faints on the spot. Gee. What are the chances of that? On other news, amongst the chaos, Qi Yu sees Yun Xian.

In addition, Doctor Liu (the good natured old guy) who was near the war zone caring for injured soldiers ends up getting injured himself and rolls away on a wagon. I’d like to believe he’ll appear again later on in the drama; he can’t die!

Even amidst the battle, Qi Zhen fails to escape and is still Mongolian’s hostage. Back at their camp, Bo Yan begs Yun Xian to treat Ye Xian but she flatly refuses. I thought Yun Xian isn’t supposed to be picky with her patients. I feel bad for Bo Yan, he’s always being used by Yun Xian and Qi Zhen because he likes them as friends but when he’s in need they make it so hard for him.

[Episode 36] Yun Xian saves Ye Xian by French kissing him biting his tongue. I give up trying to find any medical reasoning behind this. I totally didn’t want to screencap this but there isn’t a picture of them kissing nicely, which is the drama’s way of saying, “Nope, this isn’t her first kiss.” Gotcha.

When Ye Xian learns of how Yun Xian had saved him, he is now officially in love with her and wants her to his wife. To avoid him, Yun Xian says she wants to learn Mongolian medicine (otherwise she’d have to spend her day with him), which does have a few ounce of truth in it. Yun Xian learns that Mongolians use cows and their milk for medicine for everything.

Meanwhile Qi Zhen and his soldiers are punished to do hard labour. They're not in war anymore because Ye Xian had decided to retreat but even so all the soldiers hail him as the new ruler. Although Yun Xian is in Ye Xian’s care, separated from Qi Zhen, she asks the Princess to bring them waist-belts to protect their hips. Very modern. However, he’s not discouraged at all. He’s made a plan to escape.

After Qi Yu discovers Mei Ling was the reason why Yun Xian had to leave the palace, he had every intention to kill her but General Yu warns him not to (simply because an Emperor cannot kill his Empress) so he opts out to fire her as the Empress instead. EDS prohibits Qi Yu from being emotional, reminding him he’s the ruler of this country. When EDS handles the problem with ease and efficiency, Qi Yu is ashamed to be called the emperor: “Don’t call me Emperor. Empress Dowager Sun is the real ruler.” Yeaaaaaaaaaah!!

[Episode 37] Qi Yu had wanted to save Qi Zhen no matter what but General Wang (Mei Ling’s dad) advises him not to. The city is stable now after they had won the last battle against the Mongolians and what Qi Yu needs to do is restore his country. The plan is to wait three years before they try to save Qi Zhen. I think Qi Yu is convinced both logically and emotionally. It doesn’t seem like it’d be easy for him to give up the most powerful position after he’s had a taste of it.

So Qi Zhen and Yun Xian are separated but Princess Tuo Bu Hua allows them to talk to each other in a very obscure way. Qi Zhen can only see Yun Xian through the reflection of the lake because she’s on the land above him. While he’s looking at her reflection, she’s looking at his. Both of them are eager to talk and they overlap each other – from my experience, this is the drama’s way of telling us they’re in love. Yun Xian comments on Qi Zhen referring to Princess as “sister” (a type of endearment) and this enrages Qi Zhen who tells her to “Stop talking non-sense. You clearly know who the one in my heart is.” It’s awkward now because he clearly meant Yun Xian but he tries to cover it up by saying he loves his Empress (Xiao Zhuang Qian). Dropping that topic now, Qi Zhen tells her he plans to escape with all the soldiers and he’ll save her too.

Ye Xian proposes to Yun Xian by gifting her a white bird (it’s a Chinese tradition apparently) but Yun Xian, knowing his intentions, purposely sets the bird free. She lies saying it’s an occupational habit for her to save any soul, even if it’s an animal, and set it free Ye Xian upsettingly questions her. “Then you’re willing to watch my heart hurt?” This guy isn’t the traditional hottie but his acting carries his charisma. After another failed attempt in convincing Yun Xian to marry him, he gets angry at her and banishes her to do hard labour along with Qi Zhen and the other men. Uh isn’t that just giving her and Qi Zhen a chance to see each other every day?

She’s dragged by a horse for a while before arriving at the hard labour place. Once she’s arrived she faints in Qi Zhen’s arms. That night he cares for her and attempts to stroke her cheeks but guilt holds him back.

[Episode 38] Before Qi Yu had realized Yun Xian was still alive, he was actually starting to accept Mei Ling [Episode 35] and allowed her to seduce him the night before that big battle [/Episode 35]. Now she’s pregnant.

This news worries Xiao Zhuang Qian and her son’s future as the Crown Prince. Her health has been deteriorating ever since Qi Zhen was captured; her eyes are failing her and her knees are weakening from crying and praying all night. Zhuang Qian only trusted Doctor Liu but now that he’s gone she doesn’t trust the other doctors because she’s afraid they’ll try to kill her and her son.

It’s the big escape night. The weather has become severely cold and all the guards have retreated to warmth, making it an easy escape for Qi Zhen and his gang. Yun Xian had sneakily prepared a compass and they’re all set to go. The escape was easy, but the journey in the cold is what daunts them. They’re in a cave now and Yun Xian is shivering in the cold. Qi Zhen automatically hugs her to keep her warm but Yun Xian refuses it. Qi Zhen waits until she falls asleep to wrap his hands around her to keep her warm.

Their conquest to safety his thwarted by a pack of wolves but no need to worry, Qi Zhen turns into a superhero and practically singlehandedly fends off the entire pack. Yun Xian is dazzled by his sudden manliness. She thinks of Xiao Zhuang Qian and how proud she’d be of Qi Zhen right now. I think you’re the one that’s proud, Yun Xian.

The wolves are gone now but they’ve left many soldiers injured. Qi Zhen suggests the healthy portion of the soldiers continue forward while he’ll stay with the injured ones. No one is willing to abide. Qi Zhen persuades them that the Mongolians are only after him so once they catch him the rest can reach home safely. Again, no one listens. Yun Xian steps up and reminds everyone that the Emperor’s words are absolute. Gah I cried in this scene. Zhou Qiang, the one who was most adamant on guarding the Emperor, is the first one to accept his orders but it wasn’t easy. He cries as he shouts he will obey the Emperor’s imperative edict.

Everyone starts leaving but Yun Xian stays glued to her spot next to Qi Zhen. She reminds him they’ve promised to die together.

Moments later, the soldiers come back. Wut. Did I just waste my tears? However, it’s only Huo Guang, Li San and a few soldiers who have returned (Zhou Qiang, the guy that made me cry, has led the rest of the army towards the palace). They give a full bow to the Emperor apologizing they can’t follow his orders because they can’t leave the Emperor in danger. Great, my tears are here again.

And the Mongolians capture them once again.
