This is not a true review! No plot talk because if I watched the plot, I would have dropped this at Ep2. I finished because my stupid curiosity had to know if these couples end up together.

Well, I got Chinese-Paladin-ed.

(After all these remakes, I know for sure OG Chinese Paladin is not a series I'll ever check out. Their personalities and hero-mentality is too extreme/caricature right from the beginning, which is true to the traditional "xia" drama-times. However, I see how newer xianxias have borrowed their themes, for example Jiu Lu Fei Xiang has these deep, tragic romances in her side stories. All 愛而不得: love, but can never have. This is the essence of Chinese-Paladin romance.)

Li Xiao Yao & Zhao Ling'er

He Yu:
Li Xiao Yao
Yang Yu Tong:
Zhao Ling'er

CP type
→ Destined

The gist
→ She fell for her childhood hero
→ He forgot all about her.
→ He forgot her again after getting her pregnant.
→ He was MIA for most of her pregnancy and during childbirth
→ She still loves him.

The final fate
→ Star-crossed lovers. The pair of butterflies being tied together in Ep23 was a hint of their tragic romance that they could only be together in death, and they can't even die together.
FL dies to save the world.
ML supposedly joins her in the other world.
 Daughter is orphaned.
Butterflies.

Li Xiao Yao & Lin Yue Ru

He Yu:
Li Xiao Yao
Xu Hao:
Lin Yue Ru

CP type
→ Bickering couple

The gist
→ She fell for her childhood hero
→ Bickering couple.
→ 2FL’s destiny: unrequited love forever.

The final fate
→ 2FL dies to save the ML and FL.

I enjoyed 2FL's unrequited love more than the main CP because they fell in love after Ep1, and every time they're together they regress to I-love-you, no-I-love-you-more vibes. At least 2FL has a development of falling in love, hating herself for loving her friend's boyfriend (technically husband), and then finding inner peace to settle as their best friend, and be happy for their love.

He always ties her up....
...and she must love that. Look at her love-eyes:
They always argue, but when she's in danger, he's there to protect her
She hates herself for falling in love with her best friend's boyfriend:
How can she help it when ML stupidly and selflessly saves her all the time:
But! She will be happy for her best friends.
Except....why does he keep reminding her of her childhood hero…

Tang Yu & A Nu

Ye Sheng Jia:
Tang Yu
Hu Yi Xuan:
A Nu

CP type
→ Bodyguard & Princess (My guilty pleasure!)

The gist
→ He fell for his childhood hero.
→ She's the spoiled master
→ He's the reticent guard.

The final fate
→ Star-crossed lovers.
→ He dies to protect her.

Liu Jin Yuan & Lin Yue Ru

Li Chuan:
Liu Jin Yuan
Xu Hao:
Lin Yue Ru

CP type
→ Man's DNA is unrequited love

The gist
→
He's her cousin and has always loved her.
→ She never saw him as a man.

The final fate
→ He enables her to find the man she loves while coughing up blood. Not dead!

Liu Jin Yuan & Cai Yi

Li Chuan:
Liu Jin Yuan
Zheng Qiu Hong:
Cai Yi

CP type
→ Man's DNA is unrequited love

The gist
→ She fell for her hero.
→ She's a butterfly demon/sprite. (*hinthint* Butterfly)

The final fate
→ Star-crossed lovers.
→ She "dies" to save him.

The final scene is open for interpretation. He cried at the end when he saw the butterfly. Is it because he remembers, but since he understands that she wanted him to forget, he doesn't bring it up? Or did he actually forget her, but his heart hurts and he doesn’t know why?

Conclusion

I watched this show for the couples. They all dead/mourning.

Oh wait! There is one happy ending (with one or two or tree caveat): it's with the minor side characters in Song Jia Wen and A Tao (Tang Meng Jia).
