Let's Eat Season 2 Episode 1 and 2 First Impression

I was graced with my lack of interest in Let’s Eat for the first season while it was airing that I got to indulge in the full glory of the series in a zippy after it was completed. Initially my interest was diverted because I thought this was only food porn. I mean, I understand there exists a great handful of watchers that would bite on this hook but I’m not interested; to me, there’s much more to this show than just food.

As for the second season, I’m liking it so far and I’m hoping I’ll be loving it.

The Food Porn.

I’m not kidding when I’m saying I don’t care about the food. Every comment section, it’s a guarantee that you’ll find people yearning to eat X and Y but honestly, I don’t have that urge. I must not be human. But! I do find food delicious, and I do crave for food, unlike Lee Sang Woo. Just not necessarily during this show. However, I do enjoy them taking ample of time discussing about their food but I may have a problem with them taking ample of time chewing (and especially not swallowing) unless they look good eating it e.g. Lee Soo Kyung.
Currently, I’m having a slight problem with Bae Soo Ji not swallowing her food…

The Living Alone Know-Hows.

This, I love. I love shows that indulge in small common details that people miss or should know, e.g. what the know-hows in finding a renting office are. I personally believe this is where the show excels in and the food porn is simply the hook. The only reason for food porn to exist in this show is to get the characters that live alone together (and save money); through food, do they get close, which was the connection between Lee Soo Kyung and Goo Dae Young.

Lee Soo Kyung vs. Baek Soo Ji.

This, I will probably get tired of hearing if people keep saying they miss Lee Soo Kyung. I’ll admit it, I liked her in the first season too (even more than Goo Dae Young). But I’ve let go. Sorry, I’m not human nor a very committed individual. But who cares, I’m not human. Anyways, I’m willing to give in because I like the setup of Baek Soo Ji’s character from a chubby elementary school admirer to a revengeful neighbour of Goo Dae Young’s. It’s old but it works. Especially in a food porn concept.

I like it even more that she’s a food expert of no less than Goo Dae Young. It was quite enjoyable in the first episode but got a tad annoying in the second. I want Goo Dae Young to completely wipe her out once. So far it’s 2-0. Come on, Goo Dae Young!

And I get this irking feeling that depending on how the public sentiments teeter, the writers can switch up the OTP in that Baek Soo Ji can actually end up with Lee Sang Woo (the rich, well-educated, good-looing, and not-in-her-league civil servant). It makes sense too if they want a third installment, otherwise they’re going to need to find another excuse to make him break-up again because it seems like Goo Dae Young is the staple of this series. I’m not sure how I’ll like that because I usually support the main OTP – I’m the lucky watcher who never really supports the second leading guy and get my heart broken over him, phew. Especially with their love-hate relationship going on right now – I mean their love with food and hate of each other (Baek Soo Ji >>> Goo Dae Young) – I’m not very willing to give up on this OTP midway through. All will depend on Lee Sang Woo and his ability to step up to the plate to make a convincing contender, otherwise count me out. And his forgetful antics are getting a tad repetitive. But hey, for those Lee Soo Kyung x Goo Dae Young supporters, you guys get your wish of them remaining together because who knows, she might make a cameo at the last episode and clarify they never broke up – just as Choi Kyu Shik (from Season One) in the first episode never clarified it and the only person that said they broke up was Oh Do Yeon (also from Season One) who’s known for getting the wrong ideas.

Or my hypothesis can be completely off.

The Mystery-Crime Element.

Please tell me I’m not the only one loving this portion of the drama. Some may thing they’re messing with too much genre on their plate, but I think this gives the Let’s Eat series its unique (and perfect) touch. Firstly, I love spooky elements mixed with comedy (e.g. The Master’s Sun) because those two genres are like a match made in heaven, no? And according to physiology, balance is the key. If the show’s going to turn on your food metabolism, it’s gotta turn it off too because no one likes over-stimulating our adipocytes and what better way to stop you eating than to throw you something suspenseful (hey, I forget to eat my popcorn when spooky music comes on). Perfect balance is the key.

Let’s Eat Season Two Specifics:

That other civil servant, Hong In Ah, is annoying. Good for her.

Grandma addition; I don’t know how I feel about that yet but I like her for helping Goo Dae Young round up the lambs while she escapes alone.

Lee Sang Woo: I think the show made him too perfect in terms of his specs. Need to tone down on his lack of memory though.

Hwang Seung Eon as Yoon Jin Yi’s replacement from Season One: Meh.

Baek Soo Ji actually does make food look delicious (I think she’s almost better or equal to Lee Soo Kyung); just swallow it please.

Loved it when Baek Soo Ji trembled in disgust to think she ate a diet-granola bar as a meal; even if it was from Lee Sang Woo.

I like that we’ve got a character like Baek Soo Ji who reflects the reality of many woman: one whose love for food raised from her fear for food.

The last few minutes of episode two really made me sympathize with Baek Soo Ji and that will make me immune to her spiteful nature for a while longer.

And don’t assume someone as intellectual when he/she subscribes to newspaper deliveries because that’s just a way to let the world know he/she’s dead if those newspaper starts piling up. Wah.

But I’m totally looking forward to next few episodes as Baek Soo Ji and Goo Dae Young team up for Plan Marry.
