Remarks

[Drama Info]

Airdropped. Despite the hype, there’s zero promotion from official sources. (Makes me wonder what kind of shocking content it contains for Tencent to stay silent). To air, drama also underwent a last-minute Chinese title change: from 貴女 (Noble Lady) to 雁回時. Unfortunate, because 貴女 sounds better; it’s simpler, more memorable. The change likely stems from 貴, meaning expensive, and pairing it with 女 could be seen as objectifying women 女. (Hm. Fair enough.)

Director Yang Long's most popular drama is A Love So Beautiful, but he wasn't the main director. His fully credited works include My Little Happiness and Sword and Fairy (1). Screenwriter Cao Xiao Tian seems more seasoned in the suspense/revenge genre with Faithful (2023) and The Crack of Dawn (2022).

Adapted from 重生之貴女難求 (Rebirth: The Difficult-to-Attain Noble Lady) by 千山茶客 (Qian Shan Cha Ke). She's the brain behind The Double and Zhou Ye's and Cheng Lei's upcoming female general drama

Chen Du Ling finally stars alongside Wen Zheng Rong as the FL. They’ve been in three popular dramas together (My Journey to You, Fox Spirit Matchmaker: Red Moon Pact, and Love Game in Eastern Fantasy), where they only had supporting roles or cameos. Now they'll be mother and daughter.

Wrapped on July 12, 2024.

[Ending] Happy and Sad. You can "escape" the sad if you stop exactly at 39:53.

Drama Overview and Review

The posters look incredible – downright deceptive, actually! [Comments | Next »]

Have expectations for "Scheming Brother-in-law Becomes My Husband" with a twisted romance that's woven through deception and mutual survival? Taper 'em. [« Previous | Comments | Next »]
This is indued from the author of The Double:
‼️ Ending Spoiler ‼️
It ends sadly (dead on the left and living on the right), but in a way, it's still a happy ending. Every moment he lived, he was surrounded by family and love, which was all Zhuang Han Yan ever wished for. They entrusted their love and happiness to each other.

They just didn't film that part properly. That's all.

The translated poem in Ep17 [« Previous | Comments | Next »]
Han Yan's:
寒潭倒映天水一色
雁北飛去不起漣漪
Yun Xi’s:
雲煙渺渺孤舟只影
夕暉漫天青絲何寄

Han Yan's:
– The cold pool reflects the sky, merging the colours into one.
– A goose flies north, leaving no ripples behind.
Yun Xi’s:
– Mist drifts endlessly, a lone boat remains a solitary shadow.
– The evening glow spreads across the sky – where can “青絲 lasting romance/happiness” be entrusted?

Analysis:
1st line sets up the imagery: At night the water and the sky are both dark, and you can’t separate one from the other. The loneliness is vast.
→ The complementary lines: Her lone goose, and his lone boat are like them, tranquil and detached characters that complement each other
→ Credit to the scholarly hopeless sap explaining this part: 青絲 (youthful black hair) in classical Chinese poetry often means 情絲 (heart strings = romance)
Also if you read the first character of the four lines, it’s their names: 寒雁 (Han Yan) 雲夕 (Yun Xi)

I loved that Fu Yan Xi is an unreliable, dark ML who turns into a doting, dependable father. [« Previous | Comments | Next »]
He's also got a dorky side. I only wish we got more of those moments.

Other characters (ladies). Wen Zheng Rong’s Ruan Xi Wen doesn’t need intense music—her presence alone is the intensity. And when it comes to relationships, she had the best ones (over the leads). [« Previous | Comments | Review]
The GL with Chai Jing
Faithful cameos in Ep27 because these dramas share the same screenwriter. Hu Yi Xuan's character (A Lan) is actually dead in Faithful. Is this her alternate universe where she's happy with Zhang Kang Le's character?
Sis is cool on the horse.
On an auspicious day, concubine is looking stunning in red.

[Review & Rating] By cynlynn.
Deceptive romance? Deceptive, indeed. I really wanted a dark dynamic that was equal parts toxic and compelling, but it never fully took shape for me. The push and pull, the mind games, the unpredictability – it had all the ingredients to be electric. The music insists something intense is happening, but the performances and directing don’t back it up. There will be sharp twists, and I’m all in–but then it flattens out, wasting its momentum. I'll give it to them though that they had me excited here and there.

As a revenge drama, it fares better. With logic aside, watching the karma unfold and the women band together is satisfying, but the victories are too fleeting for me. That one character who needed to suffer keeps slipping away until the very end. Whatever happiness exists is short-lived.

The characters are all interesting – no buts here. I actually really love how unreliable the ML is. He keeps me on edge. And then he's a doting father. There’s so much to explore in him (that's under-explored unfortunately...).

The acting isn't necessary, apparently. Everyone delivered, everyone except the main leads. *Mind explodes* Chen Du Ling's face is a mystery. How does she move so little when she talks? Only her jaw goes up and down. Then there’s Xin Yun Lai. He can nail a brooding stare...and I'm sure there's more. I just couldn't see it. I also know he’s better than this in modern dramas, which makes his stiffness here even more baffling.

A happy ending is possible. Have your fingers ready to stop at 39:53. One second later, the rug gets yanked out from under you. It leaves me bitter, yes, but objectively, I can see the happiness in this ending, and I prefer to think of it that way even though they barely show it.

Rating: 2/5 ("heart" because I like the dark romance attempt even though it wasn't full realized)
