Mini Recaps
My goal is to pick ONE topic/highlight. It can be a major moment or the smallest little detail. You can share yours too ~

Believe it or not, underneath this skipping man is a broken man. He has a revenge: eliminate Tian Xiang Sect, a sect of fortune-scamming fortune-tellers.
The scammer:

Jiang Fei Yan (Li Yi Tong). Scammed his money, and scammed his heart. But did she have to go as far to marry him when all she had to do was introduce him to Blind Du? He did all the scamming anyway.
[Chinese] Bazi / 八字 / Eight Characters is the traditional fortune-telling system based on your birth year, month, day, and hour. ML tries to break the logic: If two people are born on the same day, then do they have the same fate? No. Because you can divide each hour into smaller and smaller intervals and make the prediction more precise. Ok. But what if it's still exactly the same? Aha. There is location and environment. Okay, I thought this was going to be a more interesting deep dive. But nope. That's it!
The scam-ee (ML) is now the scammer, and he assures the woman he just scammed, “You're luckier than me.”

(눈‸눈) Her eyes = You're such a nice guy for scamming me because I lost nothing. Instead, I feel sorry for you, my scammer.
Li Xian eats noodles to sell the image that he's godly. 🍜. He can just stand, honestly.

I am convinced that if another director handled the shaman/priest eerie-ness, the visual and the impact would be so much more interesting.

The coolest scene I can take. And I mean that sarcastically because this director is already doing so little with the visuals, and this still has more impact than the ML's dramatic resurrection.
Li Yi Tong! And they hold hands.

AWWW.
...No.
There is zero tension between these two. This is supposed to be the first time these enemies/lovers are seeing each other again, with all that history and everything she's done to him sitting between them. Give me the moment! Let the awkwardness, resentment, attraction, whatever, actually simmer!
Instead, nothing. No answers, no progression, barely a reunion. And after a few minutes of nothing, drama cuts away to another plot.

Might as well not meet.
Jiang Fei Yan marries again. To another guy. To another scam. ML, scamming the same guy/family, congratulates her.

On the day she marries someone else, he gives her a present: the watch from when they were married, the one that meant he wanted to spend every minute and every second with her. Then Jiang Fei Yan gives him some advice, which completely confuses our ML. When he asks why she's helping him, she tells him to take it as something she did for this. The watch.

And then Zhou Wen Xin finally finds her.
She can't see him. She can't hear him. When he approaches, she thinks the Qian brother has come again. She starts undressing, because she already knows what he is there to do.
And Zhou Wen Xin is standing in front of his wife, crying because she doesn't even know it's him. Crying because she suffered all these years. Right below him.
He touches her. Holds her. And only then does she realize who he is.
She cries.
He breaks down.
Then she understands what he has seen, what has been done to her, and she pulls away from him in shame.
How can she still be his wife after this?

This was devastating.
T_______T
After 10 eps, drama finally feels like it's starting!!!
ML has infiltrated the Tian Xiang Sect using the identity of Shangguan Cheng Ming, who the Patriarch believes is his son with Shangguan Hong (Liu Mei Han / Huang Yi).
![]() |
| Patriarch / "ML's father" |
![]() |
| Zhang Dan Cheng / ML's shifu |
The whole thing is a scheme between ML and his shifu, Zhang Dan Cheng (Wu Gang), to bring down the Patriarch.
Except... what if shifu is actually the evil one? What if ML really IS the Patriarch's son? What if! Learning more about the Patriarch, he seems to have more principles than shifu.

And then we find out by this tub that she really did save him after he drowned following their first scam.

Jiang Fei Yan opens her dish and realizes she's the only one with noodles. She glances around. Then across the tables, Shangguan Cheng Ming is toasting her. It's her birthday. These are longevity noodles. But actually, she doesn't even know when her own birthday is. I guess he also has a present: volunteering himself to help her accomplish her mission. Instead though, she makes a wish: that at every gathering from now on, he won't be there. That's not a “I don't want to see you” wish. That's a “stay away from danger” wish.
And then we find out by this tub that she really did save him after he drowned following their first scam.

[Chinese] 人怕三長兩短 , 香怕兩短一長
Humans fear "three long and two short."
Incense fears "two short and one long."
[三長兩短 sān cháng liǎng duǎn] "3 long and 2 short" means fatal mishap / unexpected calamity.

How? Why?
Envision a coffin. A traditional wooden coffin is made from six planks: 4 long ones for the top, bottom, and two sides, plus 2 short ones for the head and foot. However, before a corpse is entombed, the lid is left off, leaving 3 long planks and 2 short ends.
So "3 long and 2 short" visualizes an open coffin waiting for a dead body.

[兩短一長 liǎng duǎn yī cháng] Traditionally, offering 3 incense sticks is standard. If they burn unevenly so that 2 are short and 1 is long, that's considered an ominous sign in folk belief, interpreted as a warning or a sign that the ancestor or deity is displeased.
She dares him if he can handle the truth to kiss her.

And he dares. He kisses her. He got her hidden memo. Later, she thinks about that kiss and this tiny smile creeps onto her face.
Romance Checklist: Kiss*.
Tianxiang Sect's new victim target: Cao San.

The consort greeting, hahahaha

He was copying Jiang Fei Yan.

Sha Liang, the prince lol.
This Cao San takes in children who have nothing and makes them believe they are part of a miserable life together. He dresses like a beggar so they think he is one of them. Then he teaches them that if they want food, they have to bring money home. So the children hurt themselves for sympathy, perform fortune-telling tricks for business owners, smash bricks against their own heads…
The poor children don't know they're being exploited for profit. They think this is simply how they survive. Meanwhile, Cao San goes home, takes off the rags, and returns to the life of luxury he has built from their suffering.

The plan is to convince Cao San that he's the long-lost Emperor. The problem is the man is a skeptic. But our fraudsters are nothing if not thorough. They keep inflating his ego and slowly gaslight him until this fake beggar actually starts believing he's a fake Emperor. The real deal descended from royalty.

![]() |
| The "wan-sui, wan-sui, wan-wan-sui" with the suits lol |

To sink Cao San even deeper into the fantasy, our fraudsters escalate the production. Japanese “ninjas” (#6) barge in with fake guns to assassinate him. Jiang Fei Yan, playing his consort, takes the bullet for him. His actual wife is desperately trying to convince him this is all a scam, but the man is GONE. LMAO.

And they gaslight this man for a whole month. They serve him like an emperor, feeding his ego until he's completely detached from reality. A whole month of this.
Finally, the fraudsters get their hard-earned money. It was hard!
And Sha Liang is officially sick of serving His Majesty.

And then Cao San manages to get himself sent to the execution ground... for the actual crimes he committed.

New side story. New target: Tang Yu Shan, a director. The wife he wronged is acted by Jia Ze.

Remarks
[First Impression (Ep1-10)]
At Ep10, the drama I came for might actually be here. This feels like a 10-episode setup. Could we not have cut the Chen family's mine arc from Episodes 1–3.5? Then it took another while to set up and finish Blind Du's story. It felt like I had to clear three separate side stories before finally getting to the main plot. The third one was actually okay, but mostly because of how it ended.
Then there's the directing. I don't like it. I look at his other dramas and... yeah, I don't like those either. This drama has so much potentially interesting material: fortune-telling, shamanic weirdness, creepy props, all these things that could be atmospheric, suspenseful, eerie, or even funny. And all of it is just... there. None of it has much visual or dramatic impact. I keep looking at the material thinking, this could be so much cooler………
I also really hate the constant back-and-forth timeline. When I'm already struggling to care about an arc, please don't make me reconstruct when everything is happening.
But why am I such a sucker for Li Xian?! He doesn't even look good here, lol. Still!
Ep8-10 is definitely looking up for me, though. The ending of the third story made me cry (meaning I finally got invested!), and then the main plot finally started taking over. So maybe, finally, the drama I signed up for is here.

The title irony is Chinese censorship at work.

[A Highlight]
[Dropped (Ep20)]
Around Eps8-9, I thought we'd finally cleared the side stories and were getting into the main plot: ML's revenge against the Tian Xiang Sect. We were introduced to a whole slew of characters within the sect, and I thought, okay, NOW we're getting somewhere! Except, nope. It's straight back to the side cases.
[Cast&Crew]
我不是大師 (Wǒ Bù Shì Dà Shī) is supposedly Li Xian and Li Yi Tong's second collaboration after 2019's Sword Dynasty – which flopped. But it's their third if you count Li Xian's cameo in Li Yi Tong's Dt.Appledog’s Time. So third time's the charm?
Directed by Yang Lei, whose resume is pick-a-genre-and-he'll-probably-have-one: The Three-Body Problem, The Legend of Heroes: Hot Blooded, Healer of Children, and this year's (2026) About Love and Swords Into Plowshares. It's a whole variety.
Adapted from Yi Zhi's novel called 我是個算命先生 (I Am a Fortune-Teller) by the screenwriter Yang Zhe. His previous dramas include The Candle in the Tomb, The Fight, and Medical Examiner Dr. Qin (a Li Xian connection).
- The original novel is 我是個算命先生 I Am a Prophet.
- But the drama became 我不是大師 I Am Not a Prophet.
- Because the drama is about exposing fortune-telling scams, our mysterious censorship board is like: Your title cannot be a scam. Kind of logic?
- Interestingly, English kept it neutral: A Prophet.
Filming wrapped on August 14, 2025.
[A Highlight]
[Dropped (Ep20)]
As much as I was determined to do this for Li Xian, and I thought if this wasn't amazing, it was watchable, but this drama has managed to be neither suspenseful, engaging, mysterious, comedic, nor romantic for more than five minutes at a time.
The side cases ARE the main cases, and the ML's revenge is the side dish.
The villains of the side cases stand out more than Li Xian and Li Yi Tong.
I am just watching one horrifying crime after another just to see the perpetrators get their comeuppance... Maybe the main revenge will come back to the forefront near the end (it should), but I cannot make myself sit through any more of this to find out.
