Drama Overview & Review

[Drama Info]

Directed by Gao Yi Jun. The man has one of the most cursed release luck. The joke when hie The Princess Royal aired just 5 months after wrapping was that it had to speedily air before it joins his shelf collection. He's been filming non-stop but his dramas just can't be seen.
  • Jade Lover 翡翠戀人 has been collecting dust since 2016 because of Lee Jong-suk (during the Korean ban) and then the cancelled Zheng Shuang.
  • Win the World has been stuck since 2017 because of Fan Bing Bing (tax evasion). This also has Peter Ho.
  • Huan Xi Sha 浣溪沙 starring Tong Li Ya and Chen Du Ling wrapped around 2020 and has remained unreleased for reasons never officially clarified.
  • Su Ji 蘇記 starring Li Lan Di and Zhu Zheng Ting has been waiting since 2021.
  • Youth in the Flames of War (Wang He Di and Zhou Ye) sat for a long time before finally airing as well. It was thanks to the explosive popularity of Wang He Di at that time.
Screenwriter is Wu Meng Zhang. Uhoh. Really uhoh. He's behind The Song of Glory and A Beautiful Lie, and this one is an original story rather than an adaptation.

Reunions for Hou Ming Hao. With Ai Mi from Fangs of Fortune. With Wang Yi Lun, also Fangs, but also Back From the Brink. Let's hope he's less problematic of a 2ML.

Age gap. 11-year age gap. This is Ai Mi's first FL drama, and she's so young! She's only just turning 18 two days after the drama premieres (birthday: July 13, 2008). Meanwhile, Hou Ming Hao is 29 this year. They filmed this last year, which means Ai Mi wasn't even 18 while filming.

A bit on Tao Xin Ran / Empress Dowager. She got a bit of a boost from Sister Makes Waves 2026 / Ride the Waves. Even though she got eliminated pretty early.

Filming wrapped on November 5, 2025.

[Ending]

Happy.

Romance. The whole time I am going: "Someone please love this precious man." 🥺 Xiao Wu Yi is the heart of the drama. And Xie Jia Yu makes sure that heart is finally cherished. (!!! Spoilers if you keep scrolling this section !!!) [Top | Skip »]
So...she starts off as his friend's girlfriend. Eek, lol.

How do you distract yourself from pain? More pain.

Who is she kidding? She can't stay mad at him.

Call me crazy...

He made this, Jia Yu.

Jia Yu is worthy!!
"I here to die with you."

Her confession 🥹

Just like she for him.

"Pinching me? Are you trying to murder your husband? Don't worry. This isn't a dream."

The Wives' Club. I totally support ML's wife/wives having extra-marital affairs. [Top | Skip »]
Love these moms betting on their husband's love life.

The Other Love Story. This drama refuses to make relationships simple. There may or may not be some incest or it's just very devoted sibling love. (!!! Spoilers if you keep scrolling this section !!!) [Top | Skip »]

I ended up loving this so much more than I expected.

The first reason is ML Xiao Wu Yi. This is my new favourite Hou Ming Hao character. Technically, he's exactly the kind of noble idiot I usually cannot stand: always sacrificing himself and never letting anyone carry his burden. But here, that's not a plot device. It's his defining character trait, and the drama never loses sight of that.

How our lovely Xie Jia Yu comes into the romance isn’t "fixing" him, but coming to love who he is. Xiao Wu Yi is such a pitiful character that my heart constantly aches for him because he believes his own life carries the least weight. Watching Jia Yu tell him again and again, through both her words and actions, that he is the most important made me yearn for this romance.

I really wanted Xiao Wu Yi to know what it felt like to be loved unconditionally.

The second reason is the script. This writing. In just 28 episodes, I was constantly gasping, tearing up, laughing, or getting blindsided by another twist. Every supporting character has their own mind, motivations, relationships, and trajectory. Bravo. (Also, this was a complete script before filming.)

The unfortunate elephant in the room is the casting. I've already talked enough about Ai Mi being under 18 during filming, and I still think that was the wrong production decision. The romance is handled appropriately for her age, and you can feel the production keeping clear boundaries because of it. But that also means the romance feels restrained in ways it probably wouldn't have with an adult actress. However, given what we have within the drama, I have no complaints about Ai Mi. Maybe the mascara?

I decided not to take a mark off for the casting choice because that exists outside of the story itself. The one point it loses is simply because the drama is a little too busy. LOL. The political storyline is complicated in the best way, but I actually wished the drama had some fillers or slowed down so I could sit with the characters emotionally a while longer, let the feelings linger more. Maybe I'm asking it to be a little more stupid? xD

Anyway, that's a minor complaint, because otherwise I came away genuinely impressed.

Respect to this team. Sharp writing, consistent pacing, depth in supporting characters, twists that kept me invested, and a ML that ached my heart.
