Xia Rui is penalized for skipping class. She’s to clean the swimming pool. All her friends ditch her, only Nan Xin is there. However, he’s not there to help her. He wants to see her necklace. He’s not quite expressing himself properly and that makes Xia Rui scared. Accidentally, they both fall into the pool. It’s Xia Rui who saves him. She runs back to class but Nan Xin stops her. He gives her his dry shirt because hers is wet.
Nan Xin and Xia Rui are actually childhood friends. He recognized her via the wooden necklace. But she hasn’t recognized him yet. She used to be his hero. From young, Nan Xin has always had social anxiety but he was able to talk to her. Lately, the severity of his anxiety escalated. Xia Rui might just be his cure.
Nan Xin unexpectedly spoke to Xia Rui. He wished her good luck on her exams, surprising her. After the exams, the school’s most popular girl gives him a present. This incites the school’s biggest bully’s jealousy. Xia Rui, loyal to her peers, stands in the way to help Nan Xin. She’s surprised he spoke up too. He’s breathing heavily after that but he cares more about her unraveled shoe laces. He kneels down to tie them for her but she doesn’t need it. Her chin bumps into his head instead.
Xia Rui finds out Nan Xin secretly helped her study. She doesn’t know why on earth he’d do that so she calls him out to confront him.
Nan Xin gives her a box. Inside, there’s a bell necklace which is a pair with her wooden necklace. Her memories rush in. He’s her Xiao Mu Tou and she’s his Xiao Ling Dang. Xia Rui’s eyes tear up and so does Nan Xin's. Xiao Mu Tou means little wood and Xiao Ling Dang means little bell. He’s like the wood that doesn’t speak and she’s the bell that doesn’t stop ringing. She kept the wood to remind her of him and he kept the bell to remind him of her. Their secret word is Baby Whale.
Xia Rui and Nan Xin rekindle their friendship. Xia Rui promises to protect him. She senses his skepticism and assures him she will. She reaches out to pat his head, Nan Xin flinches a little. Slowly, he smiles at his knight. He bows his head towards her so she can pat him.
Xia Rui finds it a tad awkward to pat his hat so he takes off his hat, crouches down to let her pat him on the hair to her heart's content. Xia Rui makes an offhand comment that he looks much better without the hat. And guess who shows up hat-less to school tomorrow. Nan Xin.
Being a genius sure is a luxury, Nan Xin can do anything he wants. He analyzes Cheng Er Luo's basketball match against a peer who bullied Zhao Yi Shu and devises a game plan to propel Cheng Er Luo to victory. Cheng Er Luo and Zhao Yi Shu is our second couple. She likes him but he's a little dim.
Nan Xin gives Xia Rui another box full of stuff. It’s all her birthday presents (December 31st) from all these years. He teases her for his, which she obviously doesn’t have.
Nan Xin’s popularity surges. He’s smart and good looking. However, news get out that he has a severe anxiety and now the same admirers are discriminating against him. With newfound friends and newfound strength, Nan Xin makes a speech in front of the entire class to address his anxiety. He’s back to being popular among everyone and not just the girls this time.
Nan Xin goes out of his comfort zone to participate in the class relay race. In the middle of the race, he loses his hat. His hat is like an armour for him. Fretting for him, Xia Rui runs to the finish line so that he won’t be nervous. With Xia Rui filling his vision, Nan Xin helps the team (and the class) win the race. He gives her a big tight hug. Nan Xin tells Xia Rui to always be at his finishing mark. Where I go there will be you at the end waiting for me.
Xia Rui and her brother are cute together. Little brother threatens Xia Rui with a picture he drew of Xia Rui sleeping on Nan Xin’s shoulder. Highschoolers can’t date. Xia Rui isn’t afraid of his taunting because her and Nan Xin are like bros. She’s quickly exposed that she cares when little brother takes her sister’s dare and yells for mom. Xia Rui jumps at him to make him hush.
After boot camp style studying (at least for Xia Rui), she’s crestfallen by her poor grades. What saddens her the most is that she might not make it to university with her friends. She doesn’t want to tell her friends that, especially Nan Xin, so she skips class and plays with Liu Bin instead. He's the bully that Xia Rui pacified and now they're best of friends.
The teacher asks Nan Xin what his university plans are. His plans will depend on Xia Rui’s. So straightforward. Mom is invited to school to talk about her son’s university choices. By chance she sees Nan Xin’s hands redden from the boiling hot water. He was protecting Xia Rui’s hand from her own clumsiness. A very worried mom hits Xia Rui’s hands away and starts blaming Xia Rui for her son’s injuries. Xia Rui’s mom sees this and stands up for her own daughter. I’m on Xia Rui’s mom side. But I do get that Nan Xin’s mother meant no ill. She’s just overly anxious about her son. Later that night, mom spots her son with Xia Rui. On her son’s face is a bright smile she yearns to see her son show her.
I see a future of Xia Rui as a barista. Maybe she’ll open a coffee store?
Nan Xin and Xia Rui watch the starry night together. She tells him how her father passed away and how one of her wishes is to watch the sunrise in a place close to the sun. She admits she's a bit weak herself. She's afraid of growing up. She's afraid of losing things as she ages. She's afraid they'll all leave her (to university).

Nan Xin assures her he's not afraid because he found her. He promises he'll never leave her. Xia Rui rests her head on his shoulder. They both clutch their necklaces as they spend the night together.
The above is how anyone should check for temperatures. Xia Rui has a fever. Nan Xin takes care of her the whole night.
The next morning, Nan Xin and Xia Rui come down for breakfast. Grandparents think there’s nothing weird about a teenager boy coming down from their granddaughter’s room bright and early in the morning. Grandparents even make them wash dishes to further develop their relationship.
Xia Rui fails her audition for her university application. She cries alone in the washroom. She tells herself she better not let Nan Xin know. Failing one test is not the end of the world. Nan Xin continues to research which universities are suitable for her. Thus, continues Nan Xin's military like training of Xia Rui.
Nan Xin is obsessed with Xia Rui asking another man to piggyback her. This other man is Cheng Er Luo who only offered to piggyback Zhao Yi Shu, so Xia Rui was teasing him. Nan Xin makes her promise that only he can piggyback her. By the way, they're on a hiking trip organized by Hu Yue (classroom teacher). He's inspiring them by taking them through the hard route. Life isn't easy but the process makes the destination worthwhile.

He's crying trying not to, and tells her he would go wherever she goes. He knows her efforts and persistence more than anyone else. He can't let her go, so when Xia Rui, defeated, thinks of letting her mother decide her future, he begs her to fight one last time, and together they make a plan for her, to let her enter a management school in Binhai City.

The crying scene is beautifully done because you can feel they loved each other for a long time, it was just never put as love between lovers, but it's still pure and genuine. It's clear they don't want to be away from each other for the rest of their life, and Nan Xi makes it very clear to Xia Rui's mother as they present their plan. He wants to be with her forever.
Boss Yo left his cafe to follow coach Yang. The squad is cleaning the place, and Nan Xi hopes Xia Rui will see his note on the board "Xia Rui, I like you". She doesn't, but he sees hers (more about it on ep.18)

A New Beginning
Nan Xi hugs his mother before leaving for Binhai City, which is quite a feat for them. He meets up with Xia Rui to travel via train together. Once there, Xia Rui takes care of her admission and his, because of the huge crowd.
While she does it, Nan Xi is with Xia Shu, waiting for her to come back. They are suddenly, without their consent, interviewed and photographed, which makes both of them very uncomfortable. Thankfully, a senior and Chen Erluo arrive and make the 2 "journalists" apologize. Afterwards, Xia Rui and Nan Xi go to his future dorm. Once there they realise that his roommates are the 2 disrespectful journalists. This is unacceptable, Xia Rui decides, and they go house hunting, with the help of Wand Chu (Nan Xi's mother's friend). They find a perfect house for Nan Xi in the industrial area. He is already imagining Xia Rui living with him (please he is soooooo dedicated to her 😍)

Nan Xi and his roommates won first place for the assignment. They eat hotpot with Xia Rui and invite Gao Ting, but he refuses.
Nan Xi gifts Xia Rui a painting of them in their home signed "our home" and confesses that he likes her. He likes her as Nan Xi, not as Xiamotou (little wood, which seems to represent the part of him who's scared of others and contact in general, the unhealed part of him). He says this in particular because he saw her note on the board which says " I hope Xiamotou will get better and heal." That's why he didn't confess before, because he wants to deserve her as Nan Xi. It's very cute because he is undoubtedly possessive of her, not in a toxic way, but he only sees her, and she is his world. When she doesn't, he pouts like a kid and gets clingy. Their exchange after the confession shows this perfectly:

From there, a few near kiss are interrupted, other type of intimacy (which show so much more, but that's on me) like hugs, back hugs, quality time, act of services (he bought her a house!) and no "thank you " between them but "I like you " are everywhere to be seen from this episode.
(Did they date at one point?! Like seriously the way the actor acts is so convincing I wouldn't be surprised if they did/do. I generally don't care about these things, it's their life, but there I was genuinely wondering.)
So this plot was so weird, it just makes no sense to me. Basically, Xia Rui's mother sends her younger brother to her to babysit him... Why would you send your son to your daughter, who's at the University, living in a dorm, when he has a father (they are half siblings), 2 pairs of grandparents, potentially an adult friend who has a house and lives nearby.... It's just... Maybe they tried something new, which I applaud, but at least, make it make sense. It wasn't even holiday time where they didn't have lessons or the weekend, I don't know. Anyway, the kid acts super well so at least that's it.

She also applies for "social class" for Nan Xi as she thinks it's a good way for him to work on himself gently, as one of his roommates is there for support. He ends up "dancing" = holding the other clothes without touching them with Yang Yufei.
Chen Erluo and Shu are miscommunicating more and more, while Si Bo senior tries to confess to Shu and gets rejected.

People are belittling Xia Rui for being with Nan Xi. She follows the coffee map and discovers Boss Yi's new place and is employed immediately.
Meanwhile, Chen Erluo is absolutely oblivious to She's advance "I could have eaten hot brine yesterday, but I didn't because it was not the right company." She gets angry and leaves.
Xia Rui is too late to go back to her dorm, so she goes to Nan Xi's house (their home in his mind since the beginning). She takes a shower and Nan Xi dries her hair. He LOVES it. It seems to be a new obsession of his as she had to use his bath products and smells like him. It's the smuggest time he is for the entire drama: "When others smell you, they will know, we... Alright. I am done, let's go to sleep." No surprise as he is the clingy type, he likes when others know she's taken, and by him specifically. In the morning, he tries to wake her up but she doesn't, so he makes breakfast. She wakes up by the noise but pretends she doesn't, while he knows she's up. He teases her again.
For some, these scenes might seem weird but I would like to explain, not because I love this drama but it happens irl very often.
Being extrovert doesn't mean you will be at ease with more intimate stuff, and being introvert doesn't mean you will hate intimacy.
In this particular setting, Nan Xi doesn't shy away from intimacy, it's not weird at all, because for him, every step was huge to begin with. He was working just as hard to remove his cap than to say hello to a classmate. So with her, his safe place, his haven, kissing her, holding her, telling her he loves her, is the same as letting her pat his head when they met again as teenagers. Once he knows she likes him too, for him, every and any type of intimacy is safe. It's this simple.
(I am not making things up, I know because I am like this too. Please don't judge people you don't understand, try to be in their shoes.)

She made a whale latte art, referring to their secret wood whale pendant that Nan Xi carved for them. Earlier on, he learnt how to make a whale latte art, and it looks like him, simple, graceful. His whale doesn't have a mouth/smile or barely an eye (like Nan Xi's hat hiding his face when younger). Xia Rui's whale is more cartoon-like, childish, joyful and smiling. It's an interesting detail because it's not enhanced, but there nonetheless, and it shows their personality very well.

Shu tried to confess to Chen Erluo at a restaurant where you're supposed to never get refusals from your loved one. She stops herself because of Chen Erluo's obviousness and decides to stop loving him altogether.
Xia Rui is Nan Xi's power bank as he hugs her. He looks so serene here 😍.
Gao Ting tries to threaten Nan Xi about the competition, but Nan Xi couldn't care less about it.
Here, the scene where he talks to Xia Rui about looking for a particular wood, shows extremely well how much he needs Xia Rui. His micro expressions show concern because he NEEDS to win to be with Xia Rui in Milan - his stress is high, even though it might seem like he's a block of wood again, he is terrified so he's back to his "cold face less talk". It's his way to deal with the emotional trouble he is going through. It's genuinely superb acting. Nan Xi's character, here, is played in an amazing way.
(I like cold face ML in general -not jerks, just shy type- so I have seen a lot of this type of character. So far, he seems to be the only one able to show such subtleties. Again, I am sensitive to his character because I can relate much more than I would like to, so I can see it, and it's done so well!)

The power is cut off while Xia Rui is showering and she gets scared. Nan Xi runs towards her scream but sees her in her towel and an awkward moment ensues. Once fully clothed, you can tell Nan Xi badly wants to kiss her (in a sweet and innocent way, I swear his Boba balls eyes are killing me) but they don't because the light is on again.
Table is finished and Nan Xi presents his work. For him, first impressions are eternal (Xia Rui's first impression). Not all trees are perfect but people aren't either. She's enraged about the way people treat this issue, so the squad, his roommates, Bo Si senior, Yang Yufei and Binzi are helping them to find out the truth.

Then removes the headphones and lays his head on the desk with her.
They find a picture from one of his roommates on a private account with the table design a date (months ago). It proves his innocence and it's sent to the school's heads. He will receive his award and his studies and career won't be affected. After such good news, Nan Xi and Xia Rui are all sweet and soft together, basking in more sugar, if you ever were in need of it throughout this drama.
They contact the magazine and try to sue them for false statements. The magazine sends the original email back, where a QQ account is shown.

The squad plays Pictionary (a cute way to show flashbacks of their youth).
They discover Gao Ting is the bad guy. He stupidly sent his competition work with the same account 😂(for someone supposingly smart). Nan Xi wants to talk to him because Gao Ting's drawings are awful since the plagiarism issue. He tells Xia Rui that afterwards she can "blow his head" if she wants to. They meet at the cafe where she makes their café (most likely poison for Gao Ting but oh well). Gao Ting admits his fault but denies that it's a problem as he thinks Nan Xi is always disdainful towards him (he obviously has no observational skills). And also because Nan Xi took first place forever (is he 5 years old?!?).
The magazine apologizes to Nan Xi and publishes it too. Nan Xi receives his award.
3 years later
They all meet to celebrate Boss Yi and coach Yang's wedding, but the older guys eloped to travel the world. Boss Yi leaves the cafe to Xia Rui's care. She reopens it, letting Nan Xi a corner for him to work with her in proximity, as she's his inspiration.

They have, Nan Xi and Xia Rui, their sweet, simple way of saying "I am here for you," by him bowing down for her to pat his head sweetly.
I see this as a huge gesture from Nan Xi because he always had a hard time with physical contact. The first time, as kids, she stopped herself before doing so and only when HE came towards her hand, did she touch him. Later on, little by little, this gesture becomes natural and personal (no one else does it to him but Xia Rui). It's shown in a very sweet and soft way, I truly love this, as it's the first time, for Nan Xi, to feel safe enough for someone to touch him; and then later on being the only one who does it 💖💖💖

[First Impression (Ep1-10)] I like the actors more than I like the story. If not for Guo Jun Chen and Wan Peng, I probably wouldn’t continue watching. This is a high school drama about a timid boy and a bold girl. She’s his hero but he does his fair share of protecting her too in his timid but courageous ways. The one scene that made me pull through with the drama was their reunion in Ep3 when she finally recognized him. I was taken aback by the charged emotions in their expression. It was very touching; something I was not expecting from this light drama. I also liked the race paired with the music in Ep8. There are bits and pieces I like about this drama but overall I’m still on the fence.
[Actors/Actresses] Wan Peng is in the role I like her most in (similar to When We Were Young). Straightforward, and heroic. She treats everyone like a brother. Guo Jun Chen is the surprising one. From Su Yu's Mu Jue Chen to Nan Xin is a full 180. I saw a tiny bit of Mu Jue Chen when Nan Xin finished the race with his arms wide in Ep8. I was expecting a smirking Mu Jue Chen, heh.
[Dropped (Ep14)] I hate to be dropping another Wan Peng drama but I'm just not feeling this. I am interested to know what they're going to be like after university though.
