Drama Overview & Review

[Drama Info]

Director Liu Hai Bo is more known for his modern police series like Trident and Thirteen Years of Dust, and less his period romances Brocade Odyssey (uh-oh), and what is this? A period romance.

This is based on a novel of the same title. Since last year, there's already a vertical/mini adaptation and recently the donghua aired.

Wrapped on April 25, 2025.

[Ending] Happy.

Romance. The premise is pretty fun: double transmigrators inside a transmigration novel. The romance leans silly. They're hotpot-mates and partners-in-crime. But hold your chopsticks – the story does get serious with our ML. [Top | Skip »]

2FL. Xie Yong Er – the "original" transmigrator. My favourite in the drama. She was lovely with Wang Chu Ran. But Hu Yi Xuan's 2FL is a fictional character inside a story while Wang Chu Ran is the “real” transmigrator. It’s a transmigration inception. The FL gets FL-ed. (!!! Supporting Characters. There’s actually a really fun supporting cast: Bei shu, the eunuch, the scholars, the general, the various consorts – plenty of personalities. Which makes it even more confusing that drama somehow still wasn’t as fun as it should’ve been. [Top | Skip »]

The poor chicken

The unexpected CP. Trust, I got him in the picture.

Ending CliffsNotes. It’s a happy ending. Full ending spoilers below. [Top | Skip »]
With all the transmigrators basically working on the same side by the end, how could they lose? They do lose some characters though.

The return to the real world happens very simply: FL wakes up and it’s as if she just blinked back into the subway where she originally entered the book.

The source material explains the timeline a whole lot more thoroughly bit differently. ML exits the book first, while FL remains trapped inside the story world for several more years before she finally leaves. Once he returns to reality, the ML then has to wait in the real world until the exact point in time when FL first entered the book. So supposedly, when she wakes up in the subway at the end, it looks sudden but he’s already been waiting for years for her to return. Drama covers none of that. [Review & Rating] By cynlynn.
This one just wasn’t for me. "Objectively" it's still a decent watch, so it lands a middle score from me. The drama has comedy, romance, and a political storyline that develops along the way.

...It's just none of those elements clicked for me. The funny wasn't funny, the romance didn’t feel romantic, and the scheming never pulled me in. How dare me!

Rating: 3/5
