Mini Recaps

[Ep1Lin Yang is 31 years old. She injures her back and immediately, she’s replaced by a younger secretary. Then the man she waited for years to meet cancelled on her. Other than the home she’s renting, she realizes she has nothing. Sick, and hurt from emotional and physical wounds, life can't be more miserable. Then a man shouts from behind, calling her, “Wife” (Laopo). Lapoa = wifey (in this context). He’s Lu Zheng An. Although they’ve been separated for four years, he’s relieved that he’s not too late. He pulls her in for a strong embrace, something our girl desperately needed to ground herself to reality.

[Ep2] Intro: 31 years ago, their parents had promised that if their children are opposite in sex, they’ll have their children marry each other. Lin Yang was born first. On Lin Yang's first birthday, the Mom assures the other mother, It's okay there's only going to be a one year age gap. Second year – two year gap. Six years later. Natta. Finally, by the seventh year, Lu Zheng An was born. He’s a premature one. It seems he was eager to get out.

Lu Zheng An’s voiceoverLaopo, I’m sorry I’m late.

Present time. Lu Zheng An studies music and has many opportunities abroad but he returns to his hometown to sign with a small company because Lin Yang is there.

Lin Yang has a lot of health problems (small ones that will add up in the future like high blood pressure). The doctor lectures her on how she hasn’t done body check ups for over a year or two. If she doesn’t take care of herself then who will? Our doctor is agitated because she had a daughter about Lin Yang’s age. Her daughter passed away recently. Aw.

Li Tian, the new secretary, actually wasn’t supposed to be the new secretary. The CEO had hired Li Tian to be Lin Yang’s secretary. It just so happened that Lin Yang injured herself and Li Tian temporarily took over. Li Tian also has a fervent crush on Lu Zheng An.

[Ep3] Every year Lu Zheng An would come back to visit Lin Yang but every time she's either breaking up or getting together with a new man and that man was never him. It seems like Lu Zheng An's "brother" has something with Lin Yang too. This brother is Xie Nan Ke who is Lu Zheng An's cousin.

[Ep4] Lin Yang is worried for Lu Zheng An after hearing he left Xie Nan Ke's home. Technically, she was the one who kicked Lu Zheng An out of her place because he was messing with her life (or more like putting it in order but perhaps she's too embarrassed about her life and doesn't want him to see it).

Lu Zheng An is worried for Lin Yang too after he hears she's out drinking – she's just recovering from an injury. He locates her somehow and drives Lin Yang and all her friends home. Her drunk friends make him very happy because they leak all the details of how they've been researching him. Lu Zheng An promises to be their substitute driver whenever they need one.
Lu Zheng An drops off Lin Yang first. He hugs her tightly and says it's his way of recharging. He adds that it would help if she said some encouraging words too. She does and pats his head too.  He wasn't expecting her encouragement to be so sincere – he's in tears. He tightly embraces her again to hide his tears.

Cao Ling (Lin Yang's friend) is a single mother. For a long time she didn't tell anyone she divorced her husband, and she wasn't going to, but she couldn't hang on anymore – she had to ask for help and finally told her mother about it.  ):

[Ep5]

[Ep6] Cohabitation! Lin Yang invites Lu Zheng An to live with her because she can't stand his poor living conditions. She sets the rules. He has one too: he will be in charge of all the chores and cook three meals for her.

Lu Zheng An's popularity blows up overnight.

Lin Yang learns Li Tian is the sister-in-law of her boss. Li Tian's sister, Li Miao Miao, is the boss's wife.

[Ep7] Lin Yang and Xie Nan Ke liked each other and almost dated two years ago. Lin Yan thinks he's a jerk, though, because he kept her hanging. They became close because Xie Nan Ke delivered Lu Zheng An's presents to her when he was abroad. Ah, so it was Lu Zheng An who brought them together. They never became official because he chose his promotion (to work abroad).

Lin Yang is drunk after being reminded of all her heartbreak from Xie Nan Ke. Inebriated, she calls Lu Zheng An to pick her up. He runs to her, literally runs, and now he's all sweaty. Incapable of standing without tipping, she's on his back as he walks her back home. Incapable of sleeping alone, she hugs him on the bed. But then what happens after that? She can't remember and he's already gone in the morning.

Lu Zheng An went to buy a car! He can now drive Lin Yang anytime, anywhere

[Ep8] Lin Yang remembers what happened on the bed when she was drunk. She was envious of Lu Zheng An's rosy lips and demanded which shade he's using. Those lips are natural. She interprets it as him refusing to share with her his shade, and so she kisses him. Or more like she rubs her lips all over his to share the shade.

[Ep9] Oh, Lu Zheng An bought a motorbike.  I thought it was a car, but He didn't have enough money for a car, ha.

Lu Zheng An asks Lin Yang's friends if her company's contract with him as their model will benefit Lin Yang's career. If it will, he will cooperate but knowing Lin Yang's pride, she wouldn't directly ask him and so he's asking her friends for help to convince her. Cao Ling interrogates him, "Do you like –" Cutting her off, he confidently answers: "Yes!" Of course, he likes Lin Yang.

Lu Zheng An and Lin Yang go for more beer and fried chicken. This is the life. Lu Zheng An tells her they can come back regularly. But isn't he a big star? He can't be casually dining with her. Yes, he can. His work isn't his life. Lin Yang scoffs that he has everything, of course he can do whatever he wants.

Lin Yang: You have me so that means you have everything too.

During the entire dinner, he's playing the cute little brother card and even pouts. Not only is he brimming with cuteness, but also manliness. Lin Yang's eyes travel down from his jawline to his Adam''s apple. Lin Yang sees him as a man ~

[Ep10] Ma Le, Lu Zheng An's incompetent manager, falls in love at first sight with Cao Ling. Speaking of Cao Ling, she's on the fence about Lu Zheng An. She herself failed an older-woman-younger-man marriage.

Lu Zheng An is to endorse lipstick for Lin Yang's company. At night, Lin Yang applies lipstick to his lips. The mood turns romantic and peaks when it's his turn to apply the same colour on her. Do they kiss ~ y'know, to share the colour again in her way

[Ep11] Oh, they kiss! I can't be the only one surprised at this, right? The do-they-kiss cliffhangers almost always never lead to a real kiss in the next episode. Lu Zheng initiated it and Lin Yang didn't resist him. After the kiss, they short-circuit from the awkwardness. He runs out of the condo to jump and scream to his heart's content. Lin Yang flops on the couch. She's devastated that she's not the least bit angry and finds the kiss rather sweet.

They hide their relationship at work, and by relationship I mean the fact that he's her "brother". This upsets Lu Zheng An.

Lu Zheng An: Who is your brother? Did I ever call you jie (sister)?

She walks away but he grabs her for a hug. He doesn't care if he's seen. Lin Yang pushes off. She cares. It's just not possible for her to like him – he's her "brother".

[Ep12] Li Tian picks up her spirit. She's going to find a new job and hopefully, she can forget Lu Zheng An. On her way to the interview, she bumps into Xie Nan Ke. They had previously met because of Lu Zheng An who had asked Xie Nan Ke to (kindly) shoo her away. Li TIan and Xie Nan Ke are on friendly terms. They add each other on WeChat and she merrily calls him "uncle".

[Ep13] From a mere gaze, Li Tian knows Xie Nan Ke likes Lin Yang. She motivates him to pursue her. She's not being sly about this. She really thinks he's a nice guy and wants him to find happiness.

Xie Nan Ke takes the advice. He asks Lin Yang to date him. However, at this moment, Lu Zheng An is waiting for her outside her condo. Who will she choose?

Lin Yang takes a taxi home to Lu Zheng An. She rejected Xie Nan Ke. But she also tells Lu Zheng An to pack his bags and leave for good to focus on his future.

Lu Zheng An drinks at the place Lin Yang frequents. The boss chats with him and asks about his "sister" but, wait, Lin Yang had corrected her once that he's not her brother. Lu Zheng An looks up, hopefully. The boss confirms Lin Yang said so herself, albeit a little drunk. The boss continues to comfort him with her own relationships with her brother.

Lu Zheng An corrects her too: She (Lin Yang) is my wife

The next day at work, Lu Zheng An dons on sunglasses. Are his eyes swollen from crying?

Li Tian's new job is the front desk at Lin Yang's company – this was approved by Lin Yang.

[Ep14Children Intro: Little Lu Zheng An helps Lin Yang confess to a boy she likes but he sabotages the confession. From this experience, he learns Lin Yang likes someone with a good body, fair skin, handsome, and good vocals.

The coworkers gossip about how it's impossible for Lu Zheng An and Lin Yang to date. There's such a large age gap. Li Tian doesn't like the sound of that. Love is love. What does it have to do with age?

Cao Ling notices Lin Yang can't move on from Lu Zheng An. She's drunk as she lectures Lin Yang (and this is coming from the person who was against their relationship the most). She also accidentally calls Lu Zheng An, and their conversation is heard by him.

Lin Yang: It's not that I'm afraid, I just don't have faith that this will work out. I'm afraid he's acting on impulse. ... If I'm as reckless as him, I'm afraid one day he'll regret it and then I'll really lose him.

Cao Ling calls her a coward. By rejecting her feelings, she has already lost Lu Zheng An. Cao Ling gives her courage but first, Lin Yang needs to send her home, or else how can she catch the man of her life if Cao Ling is drunk on the streets. Cooperating, Cao Ling gets up but where's her phone? It's on the ground, in the middle of a call. Caller ID is "Substitute driver". Aw it's from the time Lu Zheng An drove the girls home and he said that they can call him anytime to pick them up if they're ever drunk
Lin Yang picks up the call, thinking she's speaking to a driver. She's astonished to hear Lu Zheng An's voice, but she's more astounded by Lu Zheng An who's in front of her. He ran to her. Again. Sweat is dripping all over. Over the phone, she tells him, "I was going to find you.". He knows. He just found her first. He already let her enter this world first. He can't let her be first at anything else. He's atoning for it. Heh. He walks towards her. He pulls her in for another one of his tight embraces. And then they kiss.

[Ep15] What do our lovebirds do after reciprocating their feelings? Snuggle. Whether it's in the car or at home, he can't stop touching her (in Cdrama standards). He stays at her place and all he wants to do is caress her.  He can finally officially call her "laopo".

[Ep16] Our lovebirds keep their relationship under wraps. Lin Yang is a little sad about it. That night, Lu Zheng An buys her a ring. He has one too. He ensures that they're not couple rings so that no one will know she's his girlfriend. Then he posts on his social media the picture of his ring captioned: "All the wait, and I finally have you. Good night." Lin Yang reads it and smiles, thinking his feed can only be read by her. Nope. It's public to all his friends. Li Tian reads it. She weeps alone. She thought she was over him. Her sister finds her crying and comforts her. Li Tian understands all the logic her sister is telling her, but her voice cracks as she admits she can't do it. It hurts too much. Aw. This is how to do a second female lead. I feel her pain.
[Ep17] Lu Zheng An notices Lin Yang is unhappy. What does a man do? Bidong, of course. He knows she's used to taking all the responsibility upon herself but now that she's his girlfriend, he wants her to rely on him or at least share her problems with him. Lin Yang quietly tells him about the call from his mother and how she didn't admit their relationship (well, neither could Mom ever fathom that they're dating). Before she finishes her sentence, he's already kissing her. Because...he loves her for telling him her problems? Lin Yang returns to work, spirited from the comfort of her boyfriend (the kiss).

Lin Yang is almost home. She looks up at her condo, expecting a light waiting for her, but it's dark. Immediately, she darts in her heels to Lu Zheng An's office. Aw. Her phone is also dead, which is a problem when she wants to pay for the taxi fare because all her money is on WeChat. Luckily, Lu Zheng An is outside, but he's with all his coworkers, looking like they're heading for dinner. Beside him is the girl who has previously made a move on him, Jia Ru Xin. Will Lin Yang call out to him and interrupt their amicable atmosphere? She does! She did it with a simple "Hey!" and Lu Zheng An runs to her like a puppy, wagging his imaginary tail. His eyes are filled with her. He can't even see the poor taxi driver who's right beside him asking to be paid.
[Ep18] Lin Yang asks Lu Zheng An on a date. He's ecstatic. They’re at home, though – in each other’s arms. The way he hugs her makes me feel so envious. Not just this episode, but every time, he hugs her.  He mimics a drama scene where a ML eats a slice of cucumber from the FL's lips, except with Lin Yang being the FL, she chews the cucumber like a hamster – nom, nom, nomConfusing perspectives. I thought she was eating this long uncooked noodle that was oddly crooked in the end. Turns out it's the kitchen wallpaper

Lin Yang and Lu Zheng An's date continues at their usual restaurant. Lu Zheng An is envious at how this older couple is more lovey-dovey than they are. Oh, it's the recurring older couple, aw. Determined to be sweeter, Lu Zheng An feeds Lin Yang, only to fool her as he takes the bite from her. She hits him, but he counters with a kiss. Lu Zheng An coyly asks, "Does it taste good?"

Cao Ling's mother faints from high blood pressure and as a result, her child dropped to the ground, affected with concussion. Lin Yang helps her out at the hospital. Since no one else knows Cao Ling is a single mom, Lin Yang keeps this from Lu Zheng An (even Yao Dan, their other friend, doesn't know). Lu Zheng An mopes. He thinks she doesn't trust him. She ends up telling him the story, leaving Cao Ling's name out of it, but he figures it out anyway. Cao Ling revealed everything over the phone when she was drunk. Thus, our couple smoothly overcomes this little non-misunderstanding.

[Ep19] Lu Zheng An sends Ma Le to the hospital because of his (negligible) coughs. Lu Zheng An just wants to see Lin Yang who's visiting Cao Ling. The men bump into Cao Ling with her daughter. Ma Le's love for Cao Ling remains resilient.

Lin Yang orders Ma Le to keep Cao Ling's secret. He doesn't think there's anything embarrassing with being a single mother; the one who should be embarrassed is the man who abandoned them. Aw. Lin Yang agrees but this is Cao Ling's decision. They should respect her.

Lin Yang is also angry at Lu Zheng An for invading her privacy. To him, he just wants to be included in her life with her friends. Lin Yang doesn't understand why they can't have their own private lives.

The ex-husband is back in Cao Ling's life like a parasite – he wants money. His business is floundering. Lin Yang catches him following her and shoos him away with money, thinking he'll leave Cao Ling alone after this. Then Lin Yang sends an angry text to Cao Ling: Why are you taking everything upon yourself? Why are you hiding your secret from Yao Dan? Why didn't you tell me about your ex-husband harassing you?

Lu Zheng An sees Lin Yang in the neighbourhood. It's as if they never had an argument as he tells her he was walking around, looking for her because he noticed the condo lights aren't on. Lin Yan answers she was too. He smiles. He can tell she was drinking (and not waiting for him). Lin Yang laughs that she's caught lying so soon. He helps her up and leads her back to their home. This scene is captured by someone.

[Ep20] A bit drunk, Lin Yang confesses to Lu Zheng An that she loves him more than he thinks and more than she knows. Then she falls asleep. Lu Zheng An shifts her in bed so that he can blow-dry her hair while she sleeps.

Yao Dan is angry at the girls for leaving her out of the secret. Cao Ling uses her daughter's cuteness to melt Yao Dan into forgiving her. It works ~ Our girls are back to being besties. Yao Dan understands her struggles and how she missed her opportunity to tell her the truth.

Lu Zheng An buys a car, for real this time.

Lin Yang and Lu Zheng An watch TV together at home. Lin Yang doesn't want to watch anything too sensual at night (i.e. kissing scenes in a Kdrama) so she changes the channel, and it's soccer; the team just won a point and so it's a "goal in". Awkwardly, she changes the channel again, and it's a waterfall, with water gushing out of the canals. Well. The Kdrama was definitely better, haha. Lin Yang walks back to her room. Without turning around, she asks him if he wants to sleep with her tonight. He's like O, looking very blank. The dog statue in the house goes Wow~ in a deep voice. Wow, a sexy night ~

[Ep21] The next morning, from under the covers, Lin Yang grabs her shirt to wear. Then she finishes grooming in the washroom and she doesn't even know she used her facial cleanser as toothpaste. She heads out and bumps into Lu Zheng An walking out without a shirt on. He's naked for a reason. She took his shirt (and wore it backwards and inside-out). She's that dazed from sleeping with him. What a night

Our main characters are experiencing some hardships: Lu Zheng An is threatened by the person who took pictures of him dating Lin Yang; Lin Yang's father had a surgery and her mother never told her. Lu Zheng An postpones his schedule to drive Lin Yang to her hometown. He knows about her problems but he keeps her in the dark about his.

[Ep22] The one who's threatening Lu Zheng An is Jia Ru Xin. Is it revenge? For him not returning her feelings? Ma Le plans to take all the responsibility. He invites Cao Ling for lunch to tell her that he might go bankrupt. What a nice boss. No wonder his company was failing. Ma Le doesn't want Lu Zheng An's dream to end here with him.

Mom Lu ( Lu Zheng An's mother) visits the hospital. Mom Lu lectures Lin Yang's mother for not notifying her. What kind of friend does she take her for? Aw. Then Mom Lu cries at Dad Lin's bedside, Lin Yang sheepishly fills in that her father is just sleeping.

[Ep23] So far, only Dad Lu among the parents know Lu Zheng An and Lin Yang are dating. In the previous episode, he had a mini heart attack when Lu Zheng An told him over the phone.

Lin Yang is still in her hometown with the parents (and desperately hiding the fact that she's dating Lu Zheng An). Lu Zheng An calls her to give her a surprise: he appears right in front of her. He's here in their hometown for her ~
[Ep24] Lin Yang and Lu Zheng An have a date in their hometown. I really like this date. It's healing just watching them bike, revisiting places they grew up together in. I love the insertion of the kids' scene and the changes of their height

Lin Yang: You really never called me jiejie.
Lu Zheng An: Duh!
Lin Yang: I have a dream I never accomplished. Help me out.
Lu Zheng An: Can’t help.
Lin YangJie Jie. Call me that once
Lu Zheng An: Go away.

Li Tian motivates Xie Nan Ke to move on from Lin Yang. She laughs at him that age should have helped him move on faster compared to her unless he doesn’t have experience. His awkward silence is telling. Li Tian laughs some more and tells him how she recovered. She chose to work at the same company as Lin Yang so that she can stare at her everyday and tell herself that this couple is truly in love. They will marry. They will age together. Li Tian tears up. She's still hurting. I teared up for her
Lu Zheng An is all over the tabloids for cheating. This will affect his upcoming concert, his endorsement and also Lin Yang’s company because he's their model. Both Lu Zheng An and Lin Yang receive calls. The content is the same and they both want to protect each other even if it means sacrificing themselves.
The bosses + Xie Nan Ke have the issue under control. What is this trio! I love them. They're protecting their employees (Lu Zheng An and Lin Yang) over profit!

The second parent to find out Lu Zheng An and Lin Yang are dating is Mom Lin. She recognizes her daughter's shoes in the tabloids. I had thought Lu Zheng An’s mother noticed our couple was holding hands in the hospital hallway... I guess not?

Lu Zheng An tells Lin Yang that he was blackmailed a few days earlier. He was planning to take on the burden upon himself and ask his parents to help with the compensations. He knows they'd understand. Lin Yang can't accept this. Firstly, she can't let him take all the responsibility. Secondly, she can’t have his parents pay for this. They can’t destroy their families’ friendship because of their relationship.

Lin Yang adds: But don’t worry, I promised you so I won’t give up (on us). Aw.

In fact, Lin Yang is doing even more. She sends all her childhood pictures to Xie Nan Ke (our lawyer) for him to reveal to the media so that the focus will be on her instead of Lu Zheng An.

Li Tian is furious for Lu Zheng An. Even though Lu Zheng An doesn't love her, she's still his fan. Then her brother-in-law (Lin Yang’s boss) returns home, drunk. Li Tian asks him how the negotiations went. His answer is confusing. The plan is to not bury the rumours, but let it grow and make it grow.

[Ep25] Lu Zheng An discovers Lin Yang sent pictures to Xi Nan Ke to have him clarify that she’s Lu Zheng An’s "sister". The priority is to get over the rumours. This is Lin Yang's best plan with the least risk so that he can continue to pursue his dream.

Lu Zheng An loudly declares: My entire life, my biggest dream is you!

Well, that was romantic. And all the parents are listening. During lunch, Mom Lu gives Lu Zheng An a card, in it is all the money that can settle the compensation but once he takes it, he has to quit music. Lu Zheng An hesitates. Seeing his uncertainty, Lin Yang returns the card back to Mom Lu. Lin Yang firmly insists to Mom Lu to allow Lu Zheng An to pursue his dream.

Mom is actually delighted to have Lin Yang as her son's girlfriend. Her cries in the hospital when she found out were wails of happiness. Mom texts Lin Yang: "There’s nothing love can’t solve.” Lin Yang runs to meet the pair of drunk moms and hugs them. She also texts Lu Zheng An, who’s out drinking with his father, about the happy news. He’s so happy he’s jumping up and down and spinning his father around.

[Ep26] Mom Lu’s credit card was a test for Lu Zheng An and Lin Yang. She was mad at them for being the last to know. She's their biggest fan.

The plan to take down Jia Ru Xin slowly unfolds. Li Tian is busy walking and working on her laptop. A coworker asks her what’s up. She answers, “I’m saving Earth” In other words, none of your business. Then the same coworker bumps into Yao Dan who’s busy on the phone and asks her the same question. Yao Dan answers, “I’m saving the Galaxy.” Lol

Lin Yang taunts Jia Ru Xin that she doesn't have any concrete evidence like pictures of kissing etc. Lin Yang also assures Jia Ru Xin their conversation isn’t recorded. Lin Yang heads out and Lu Zheng An picks her up. Lin Yang gives him surprise kisses right in front of Jia Ru Xin, giving her the perfect opportunity to snap kissing pics. Then Yao Dan pops up from behind, video recording everything.

As for Li Tian, she created a new marketing plan for the lipstick. She uses Lu Zheng An and Lin Yang’s love story, turning it into a fairytale to attract consumers. No one else could have done a better proposal than her because she's the one who understands Lu Zheng An's unrequited love the best. She had also barged into Xie Nan Ke’s office to ask him for help to fill in the details she didn't know.
[Ep27] Lu Zheng An meets up with Li Tian  – it was her request to see him. Is this the place he brutally rejected her? He thanks her for her efforts and for her..."wrong love". Li Tian tears up, but she keeps her sweet smile. She says she did it for herself. As she was organizing this proposal, she realizes she’s not sad anymore. She’s envious – not jealous. Li Tian is grateful to him for not loving her because she can’t handle his fans. Thank god it’s Lin Yang; she can. Aw

Li Tian’s marketing is a success. Lu Zheng An is still popular. The only one who's grumpy is Lin Yang. She’s reading and snickering at all the hate on her being old. Ha. Thank god it is Lin Yang

Meanwhile, Li Tian asks her brother-in-law for a reward. She doesn’t want money or promotions. She wants to study abroad. She realizes she enjoys marketing and wants to improve herself.

Cao Ling and Ma Le are together ~ Well, sort of. He's on trial. At least, she’s accepting his advances.

Lin Yang asks Lu Zheng An what made him like her since he was 15. Was it 15? I thought it was before he was born... He doesn’t tell her. She will have all the time with him to figure it out. Then he pulls the car aside. He chose an empty road to let her practice taking the wheel. When he’s busy, he wants her to be able to drive, to be independent, to go to places she wants to go. Aw. The lessons begin, and my gosh, she's swerving like a snake on a straight road.

Lin Yang is adapting to life as Lu Zheng An’s famous commoner girlfriend: being invisible and dying from boredom. She’s stuck at home, keeping out of the public’s eye to not harm any of her company's projects or Lu Zheng An’s upcoming concert.

[Ep28Intro: Lin Yang is in high school, coming home with a boy, who’s her first love. They’re about to hold hands, but Lu Zheng An calls her laopo and successfully sabotages her first love. Not only that, rumours spread in high school, and now no boys will date her.

Xie Nan Ke recognizes Lin Yang even though she wrapped up all her recognizable features. But then again, who would wrap themselves like that on the street. Lin Yang compliments herself. What type of girl in their 20’s can withstand all the attention? Only she, Lin Yang, with 31 years of experience can be Lu Zheng An's girlfriend. Xie Nan Ke nods to whatever she says. He seems to have moved on.

Cao Ling’s ex-husband, the parasite, is at the company, looking for Cao Ling. However, Cao Ling isn’t afraid of him. She openly tells the whole company he’s her ex and with that secret out in the open, this parasite has no leverage on her anymore. Go girl!
Lu Zheng An is finally back home after all his rehearsals. He spots something on her head and plucks it away. Lin Yang whimpers that it’s a white hair. Lu Zheng An is speechless at her tears. He’ll promise her anything! Lin Yang’s tears stop on demand.

Lin Yang in a calm voice: Call me jiejie.

Lu Zheng An rolls his eyes and looks away. Of all things, that is the one and only thing he won’t do. Exasperated, he lifts her off the couch into her bedroom.

They lie in bed together. Lin Yang turns solemn.

Lin Yang: There will be a day, I will have white hair sooner than you
Lu Zheng An: Finally, we can 白頭偕老 (idiom: to live to an old age in conjugal bliss).
Lin Yang: I will also have wrinkles before you
Lu Zheng An touches the crinkles at the corner of her eyes: You already have.
Lin Yang: I might even have Alzheimer’s Disease and forget you.
Lu Zheng An: Then I’ll just pursue you once more. Just don't forget to accept.
Lin Yang: I may also leave before you.
Lu Zheng An: To where?
Lin Yang: Probably heaven.
Lu Zheng An: Then I will find you there and slowly tell you everything interesting that you missed.
Lin Yang: You could have had so many choices, why must you choose someone old(er)?
Lu Zheng An: Because you happen to be older. I didn’t have a choice
Lin Yang tears up: Then you have to promise me that you’ll accompany me and never leave me no matter how old I am.
Lu Zheng An: Okay. Jiejie. Aw, is he calling her that because he sees her crying?

The next day, it’s the concert. Li Tian is hyped up in the audience.

[Ep29Intro: The moment our 15yo Lu Zheng An fell in love with Lin Yang was when he saw her scar (the one she got because of him). Lin Yang was just coming out of the shower. Everything about her aroused him. Her wet hair, her wiping down his sweat ~ It turns out he already promised to marry her at that age.

When a special guest (Xi Song) takes the piano at Lu Zheng An’s concert, Lu Zheng An slips away from the crowd to find Lin Yang in the audience. He quietly proposes to her right then and there. She quickly slides on the ring, because knowing him, he’d dare to make a commotion if she doesn't. Xi Song smirks on stage and plays the Wedding March. Our couple make out among the oblivious fans. Fans, your oppa is engaged~

Lu Zheng An: Laopo, from now you really will be my laopo

Xi Song is a cameo by Zuo Qi Bo. I don't know this guy at all, but I was thinking, man this guy looks familiar, it turns out he's the one who sang an OST for this drama. I was just looking up the singers because I'm really liking the OSTs.

Four years later.

Li Miao Miao (Li Tian’s sister) is a career woman and no longer a housewife. Our Boss is a house-husband! Lin Yang is managing the company for him, which gives him free time to cook for Li Miao Miao.

Li Tian isn’t coming back from abroad. She has another offer. She also has a foreign boyfriend. She updates Xie Nan Ke who’s smiling like a proud daddy at her pictures. He’s currently in the middle of a blind date (?) with a girl he doesn't really care about. The girl asks if he’s looking at pictures of his girlfriend because his smile is too bright. He’s like No, she’s my niece. Am I the only one who sort of hoped they would be a couple? But then again, I don’t know their age difference in the drama

The parents of Lu Zheng An and Lin Yang live together.

And now our couple! Firstly, Lin Yang can drive – properly. Lin Yang and Lu Zheng An also have a ...daughter – wait no – he’s a boy (Guo Guo) who is dressed up in a tutu. It's Lin Yan's style. Lu Zheng An says one daughter (Lin Yang) is already enough. Also, Lu Zheng An is no longer a celebrity, he’s working behind the scenes as a producer.

Cao Ling is opening up a restaurant! She's been dating Ma Le for four years, or more like she’s been assessing him for four years. She’s been burned once – can’t blame her for being careful. Ma Le is the angel who’s willing to wait for her. She clinks his cup and agrees to marry him. It's as simple as that.

Ma Le: I lived the first half of my life confused and lost, there were a lot of problems I hadn’t sorted out and by the time I sorted them out, I was old. Only at the age of 42, I found the career I love and the person I love. Therefore, I think there’s no need to rush. What’s to come will come. And when it does come, it’s perfectly on time. Not late at all. 👏

Cao Lin toasts as well: What age brings us aren't restrictions, but more possibilities.

The group wants to toast. Yao Dan refuses. She may be 37, but she’s also currently pregnant.

While the adults are having dinner, the kids are outside playing. Who are our kids? Guo Guo and Cao Xin Tong (Cao Lin’s daughter!). He’s 3 and she’s 8. They’re five years apart. Cao Xin Tong wants him to call her jiejie, but he won’t. Aw

The drama ends with Lu Zheng An and Lin Yang sitting in their old home reciprocating their I-love-you’s + my favourite OST. Their romance began in this house and it ends here. Lovely.

The end!

Remarks

[First Impression (Ep1-12)] Lu Zheng An is seven years younger than Lin Yang. Since his conception, he has loved her (which is the message I'm getting from the drama). Now he's back as a man and no longer her baby "brother". Lu Zheng An's one and only goal: to bring happiness to Lin Yang's life.

This story also focuses on Lin Yang and her two friends on their journey of being a woman in their 30's. One of them is a single mom. The other is married but with marital problems.

I had dropped this after the first six episodes but I kept hearing good things about it. Curious, I watched more and He Yu has captured my heart. This drama oozes with sweetness all because of Lu Zheng An's devotion to Lin Yang. While He Yu brings on the puppy love, Li Xi Rui holds onto her maturity as an actress to paint the struggles of Lin Yang's life as a 31-year old with a regular office career.

[Actors/Actresses] I don't know if it's because I like Tian Xi Wei, but I don't find her annoying when she's supposed to be the annoying second female lead. [Ending Update] Mark my words, Tian Xi Wei, will be big, not for this role per se. She easily turned an annoying second female lead endearing. Even in the beginning when she was obnoxious, that moment where Lu Zheng An turned her down, I pitied her and it was all because of her acting.

I hate his hair. That's what I'll start with. 😆 Beyond that, I really love Lu Zheng An. The sweetest smile, those mischievous eyes, and the utter look of love (and sometimes deep sadness) when he looks at Lin Yang. He's so sincere. (He Yu just has the cutest expressions! 😍) Even his voice is sweet. I like how strong he is, resolute and kind.

I was never really into noona romances before. But I think it's more fitting since I'm older now. Hahaha This is the 3rd one this year. (I like the kdrama, Romance is An Extra Bonus Book.)

Li Yang just wanted to live a "normal" life. No huge aspirations and there's nothing wrong with it. I love how much she supports him. She's got an independent streak in her but she's lonely. (I also think her loneliness came from waiting for Xia Nan Ke...) She was stronger than she thought, and she'd always had someone on her side, but it took her a while to realize that.

I got really annoyed at Xie Nan Ke over time. Especially after LZA and LY officially got together and then he seriously tried to trivialize LZA's love for LY. Yet he's the one who let his own insecurities and failure to properly love LY or to even say anything to her - whereas LZA has always, always loved her and has never made her feel otherwise.

Li Tian (Tian Xi Wei) is very pretty, bright and very likeable. She matured through her heartbreak (and with her sister's support). I'd watch her in something else.

His manager, Ma Le, is hilarious. The poor guy does look older than his chronological age. I love it when he falls for Cao Ling (she's so pretty and serene) and acts like a besotted teenaged girl. 😆 Both of her best friends are wonderful - different but compatible. Yao Dan (so straightforward and fierce) is the friend every woman needs.

This series was just beautiful and addicting. It was so easy to watch. And so much develops from episode to episode. I love the titles of the eps (at least the English translation). I loved hearing LZA's voiceover during the beginning of the eps, too. I absolutely love the bits of their childhood days and then their relationship in the present timeline. The childhood days' scenes just got sweeter and sweeter. The kid actors were so cute. The dialogue was amazing!

I also love the way "adult" is defined by each parent in this show (E15). My favorite is Li Dad's: "Adults are actually older children but they can't act like children. They have to be sensible, bear the grievance and stay strong whatever happens and compromise all the time. So being an adult is hard..." Very well put. Personally, this was something that I wish had been explained to me as a child/teenager. I was given the "This is what you are supposed to do as adult. Just grow up already."

LY's love note/lyrics scene with the parents gathered around it like it was a bomb cracked me up. Of course, LY was a Jay Chou fan... 😆 (Reminded me of every missed concert in Wait, My Youth!) Aww, little LZA told on her. But he grew up to become her idol. 🤣 We, the viewers, knew she was his biggest dream. The broken Ming vase...I love how LY covered up for LZA, but Lu Dad was acting like he did it. Awww. (He's the best dad!)

I could probably watch the morning after scene in E21 at least 5 more times. She got so shy and he's relishing in it. 😆 The hallway shuffle scene. 😍 Officially, his lapoa!!

This series, at first glance, seems to be about romantic love but it isn't just that - it's about friendship, family and every kind of love that we experience over time. And you know this series was so endearing as I didn't try to rush watching it, I watched it over a few days to make it last just a little bit longer as I knew I'd hate to see it end. 😭 The last 4 eps with their childhood scenes were brutal...they were so sweet and poignant. And meant the inevitable end to this series. This is going on my go-to re-watch list.

So I took the bait and watched My Neighbour Can't Sleep next...🤣 (Same screenwriter and producer. I binged it. Not quite as good as My Fated Boy, but it's still sweet. The plot is very lax... as in there isn't much of one. But it's all very cute and enjoyable. The leads are great. Xi Song definitely glowed up a bit in My Fated Boy.)

So I just binged this after hearing FanFanX recommend it and also because the premise is hilariously relatable (Random tangent, my son is a year younger than my best friend's daughter, and we have continuously been "joking" about pairing them up so that we can be in-laws in future. Inverted commas around joking because we won't force the kids, but we would be ecstatic if it really happens haha.)

Anyway, overall the first few episodes were a little slow to start, and (forgive my bluntness) neither of the leads were super eye-catching nor stunning. And yet, slowly with each episode, show slowly crept into my heart and before I knew it, I was totally in love with this show. There is so much to love here, I don't even know where to start. In most reviews, I feel like I can just talk about the leads, but how can I do that here when all the side characters are just as compelling?

Lu Zheng An

First off, total agreement with FanFanX, what is wrong with his hair? But perhaps, that is only thing we can criticize about him, both character- and actor-wise. I loved his story, of how he was always in love with Lin Yang, of how he refused to call her "sister" and calls her "wife" instead. Initially, I found it slightly presumptuous for him to call her wife without her consent, but drunken Yao Dan makes a good point, she also refers to him as her little brother without her consent. Perhaps it's his way of showing that he doesn't agree to the brother title.
I loved the way he loved her too. He always tried to be there for her, and he never forced her into anything. He always let her take the intiative (though sometimes he can be a little manipulative). It was her who invited him to stay with her, it was her outburst that finally broke the facade and allowed them to be together and it was also her who initiated their first night together. I also liked how despite being a singer, he lets his actions speak, rather than his words. He expresses his love by tidying up her house, by taking care of her and cooking for her... He understood her insecurity and gave her a promise ring to tell her that he is always thinking of her. (My god, I teared up when she sobbed over how touched she was)

There were times where he annoyed/angered her due to his immaturity, but he is always quick to learn, quick to change, quick to apologize. The episode that began in the hospital where his anxiousness caused him to invade her personal space, moving into him consulting a bunch of older women at work for relationship advice and finally transitioning into him not calling out her lie of being at work, just quietly following her and making sure she is safe while giving her space was perfect. Perhaps immature is not the right word for it, rather it's inexperience with relationships, but he is mature enough to acknowledge his problems and quick to improve. I love that about him. Furthermore, how can we blame him for his inexperience? After all, he never had space in his heart for anyone else.

Acting-wise, I think He Yu nailed the character. I loved his mischievous grins and the love pouring out of his eyes when he looks at Lin Yang. He really does feel like a young man, helplessly in love with a woman who doesn't realize it yet.

(Random tangent 2: Did they ever explain how he caused the scar on her shoulder? Was it from them rolling down the hill after stealing oranges?)

Lin Yang

Appearance-wise, I don't think Li Xi Rui stands out among the numerous FLs in other dramas, but acting-wise, she really shone in this drama. I could feel her sadness, her weariness, her anger, her joy, her determination, and most importantly, her love.

I loved how her dream is just to live a normal life and get married. It's seems so simple and yet, I wonder how many people actually achieve it. And really, at the start of the series, she is perhaps the furthest from it she's ever been. She has been used to been alone for so long that she doesn't understand how to rely on someone else. It's why she and Xie Nan Ke were never the right fit (both of them were too head strong and too independent). It's only LZA who teaches her that it's ok to lay down her armor, because he will protect her and never hurt her. Drama sort of equates that with being childish, and I guess it's true somewhat? Children don't need armor, because they know their parents will protect them.

I completely understand her hesitation to embark on a relationship with LZA. After all, he always appeared so playful and bubbly, who knew that he was so serious and devoted to her? I loved how the initiation of her admitting her feelings for him was her learning the extent of his devotion to her (reading his years of posts all only visible to her). Only when she knew how serious he was, was she able to take the plunge.

Her growth in the relationship was also so organic and relatable. She slowly learns to rely on him more and while there are times where she snaps at him, she is also quick to apologize and acknowledge her own shortcomings. There are also times where she reverts back to her bad habits (carrying all the burden on her own), such as insisting on denying their relationship to save his career. Perhaps the point where she really grew up was when she decided to trust him and take the gamble together.

(Random tangent 3: Something that always tickles me is when show does a double entendre to tell the audience the series is ending. When she confronts Jia Ru Xin, she tells her that the show is almost over. But she's also telling us... T_T)

Their childhood and their love

I love the snippets that we see from their childhood. There's humour, but there is also relevance to the events of the episode. I loved how she always protected him as a kid (taking the blame for the vase, for the bullying and "saving" him from the orange tree owner), and how now, it's his turn to protect her. The scene where he moved away was a tear-jerker, and I felt the same way as show was about to be ripped away from me too. The episode of them revisiting all the childhood memories was amazing. It really cemented the feeling of them being meant for each other. In Ma Le's words, perhaps only after we've searched the world for the right one will we realize that the person was right next to us all along.

Their love really enwrapped me as well. I love how they both grew in this relationship to become better people for each other. They also became more alike (e.g. her becoming more clingy, while he learns to give her space). I love how they slowly learnt to trust (for him) and rely on (for her) each other. I also loved how they have no secrets from each other. IMO, that's what a perfect relationship should be like.

The scene where she insists on bearing the blunt of the media attention so that he can chase his dream and him yelling "My biggest dream is YOU" was so touching. I loved how fearless his love is.

Li Tian

Honestly, she was one of the big reasons why the first few episodes were such a turn-off. I was so ready to dismiss her as the typical whiny, bitchy 2FL, but then.... show took my expectations and threw it out the window.

The amount of character growth she shows is insane. She slowly learns from her mistakes and matures from a childish little girl to a woman who knows what she wants now. She learns to accept the reality that LZA is not meant for her and slowly moves on, bit by bit. She even has the courage to go back to her office and work again after embarrassing herself like that. I can feel her hurt, from her sobbing upon seeing his ring, to her taking it out on the printer and then to her, holding back tears as she talks to LZA for one last time. She is healing, but she isn't there yet.

And yet, even as she is broken herself, she manages to help others. She teaches Xie Nan Ke to let go so that he can heal. And she also saves our 2 leads with her proposal. I loved that. I loved how she became the one to save them. In a sense, it's karma isn't it? LZA, although he rejected her time and again, was never harsh nor cruel. LY, although she had to put up with her bitchiness and manipulative techniques, never abused her position nor retaliated against her. Furthermore, LY was willing to give her a second chance and even gave her space to cry (by chasing away another guy at the printer). I loved this message that drama sends. Be kind to everyone.

Cao Ling and Ma Le

Funnily, my favorite line in the show was spoken by Ma Le, "Why should she hide that she has a kid? What is there to be embarrassed about as a single mom? The person that should be embarrassed is that scum who abandoned her and her kid." It's funny, because it's both so true, and yet... so naive? All of us should agree with this statement, and yet it is always the single mom that bears the judging stares, not the scum that walks about freely with no labels.

Cao Ling also grew in this show, from someone who was ashamed of her past, she learns to embrace it, because it is part of her. I loved the final scene where she no longer fears her past and spits it out at her parasite of an ex-husband. Also, as someone who has been hurt and rejected before as a single mom, she slowly learns to trust again and finally ends up together with Ma Le.

Ma Le, omg, where do I even start. He is a hilarious character and it's funny how he's the most childlike despite being the oldest. At first, I thought he was just going to be a bumbling buffoon that gets led around by LZA. But nope, there is so much more depth behind his character. I loved how he was willing to do whatever it takes, even sacrificing his company to protect LZA. Another line that really touched me was when he said to Boss Hua, "Since we are the adults who have everything, shouldn't we be responsible for protecting the dreams and the love of the ones who don't?" It's funny how the funny guy ends up blurting out two of the most touching and inspiring lines in the entire drama. Behind his childish facade, lies a man who has weathered countless storms and yet, still maintains his childlike wonder in the world. Or perhaps, it was LZA who reignited the childlike wonder in him and why Ma Le wants to go to such lengths to protect his dream.

I also love how he turns into a lovestruck teenager in front of Cao Ling. It's as though he reverted back to a 15 year old boy, not knowing what to say, not knowing what to do, but just wanting to be with her. Their romance is so sweet in their own way, and I loved the final scene of him tearing up when he saw the wallpaper on Cao Ling's phone (a photo of the 3 of them).

(Random Tangent 4: Another scene that didn't really fit in any of the above categories was when the 3 "adults" went to solve the issue for LZA and LY. I loved that scene, and it was also so sweet and touching watching the 3 "adults" protecting the dreams of their "children”)

The Parents

Omg, I loved the parents. Mommy and Daddy Lu are hilarious in their bickering relationship, but even under all that, you can see that they do love and care for each other.

I hated how Mommy and Daddy Lin hid his illness from LY, but its perfectly understandable. it's ironic that the next scene is LY lecturing her mom to communicate more and rely on her more, when it's something she herself is guilty of not doing with LZA. But perhaps that's also what helps her realize her own mistakes. I like how the characters grew here as well, the Lin family realizing that they need to communicate more with each other, instead of just bottling everything up, and also how the two families rekindled their relationship.

I also loved how all the parents were so supportive of the relationship. It's funny how the two mums were talking about hoping the kids would get together while the two kids were hugging right outside their door. Hahahaha. It's also funny how the parents end up doting on the other kid more and threatening their own kid to not bully their spouse.

Love vs Career

One theme that is somewhat touched on here is that of love vs career. Initially, we see the sacrifices that the women make. Cao Ling gave up time with her baby for her career, while Li Miao Miao gave up her career for love. And yet, at the end it's the guys that sacrifice. Boss Hua gave up a lot of responsibilities so that he can spend more time with Li Miao Miao, while Ma Le stepped down as the music company's boss to help out at Cao Ling's restaurant. LZA also stopped being a singer and became a producer, probably to reduce the scrutiny on his private life and give more security to LY.

I like this message, that there isn't someone who should always sacrifice, everyone in a relationship has to work to maintain it. Furthermore, is it really a sacrifice? Perhaps, a better word is choice. Each of us only have a limited time in this world, and we just have to choose, how to best spend this limited time, be it in career or in love.

Growth

It's nearly the end of this spew, I promise.

It's funny that the chinese title of this show is "My neighbour refuses to grow up" when I think the overarching theme of this show is growth. All the characters are growing in this show, none of them are the same as they were before.

LY and LZA grew, both career-wise and in their relationship. They grew into the best people suited for each other. Ma Le grew and finally found what he truly wanted in life, Cao Ling. Cao Ling grew and learnt to embrace her past. Li Tian grew into a mature girl who understood what she wanted in life. Even the side characters, Xie Nan Ke, the parents, Li Miao Miao and Boss Hua, all grew in their own way.
I also liked how show didn't equate growth to being an adult. LY and Cao Ling grew to become more child-like. Li Tian also grew and her solution to the BIG problem was a child-like solution, to sell a fairytale love story, an idea that the adults didn't think of. I like the message that there isn't anything wrong inherently to being child-like, we just want to grow to the best version of us, both for ourselves and our partners. It's also fitting how in each relationship, there's an adult and a child (LY and LZA, Cao Ling and Ma Le, Xie Nan Ke and Li Tian), although the last one is not strictly romantic.

Overall

Congrats on making it so far!

I loved this show so much. In a way, this show is reminiscent of Go Ahead. Both shows were slow to start, had childhood connections, and it didn't just focus on romance, it's about the friendships, the family, and the growth (or healing for Go Ahead) of the characters.

There's also a lot of positive messages that show sends, which really resonates with me (single moms have nothing to be ashamed about, protecting our dreams, relying on each other in a relationship, etc).

There's also so much more that this review doesn't touch on (some I forgot, some I excluded so as to keep this as concise as I can hahaha), so I would highly recommend watching it for yourselves.

Lin Yang: "Romantic and warm, and with hope”.

Lin Yang’s line is the feeling this drama elicits. Lin Yang is the mature female lead; Lu Zheng An is the cute boy unconditionally in love. Our drama is a romantic fairytale that blends maturity with cuteness into a romance that’s so heartwarmingly beautiful, you guys, I forgot I was watching a romcom. The snippets of the childhood scenes, the soothing music, everything enamoured me and tenderized my heart, it’s kind of sore now. This drama makes me want to believe their romance can be true.

In the beginning I wasn’t a believer of this drama. He’s a popular singer and she’s seven years older. It’s already hard dating a celebrity, and on top of that, our drama is adding an Older-Woman-Younger-Man (OWYM) tag but it’s precisely this tag that makes their romance so envious. A line from Lu Zheng An that summarizes his devotion:

"You grew up with me, (and so) I’ll pamper you until old age."

I don’t consider myself a fan of OWYM dramas because I dread its associated tropes (overcoming stereotypes of differences in age, breaking up because of family and societal pressures, etc.) but the drama easily avoids all of them and with barely any misunderstandings, our couple’s love for each remain resilient the moment they reciprocated. All our secondary characters are such good people. The bosses, the second female lead, the parents, everyone is charming, and everyone is supportive.

In summary, what worked for me: the romantic romance, the suitable actors, the short format, the soothing music, the supportive characters, and an ending that reminded me how lovely this entire piece is. I think I need to keep tabs on this director.

Highly worth binging – I actually got to binge most of this (rare for me) because I invested in this one kinda "late". If I ever had time to rewatch a drama, there's a high probability I'd pick this one, especially because it doesn't have the typical drag in the second half of the drama.
