[Ep1[Jump to: Top | CastComments]

Setting. It's the 15th year of the Mingguo era (= 1926). Btw, You'll hear 俺 (an) a lot. It means "I" and is mostly used in northern Chinese dialects.
Ning Xiu Xiu is marrying today.

No, wait. Ning Xiu Xiu isn't marrying today. She's kidnapped. You knew the villains were villains, but you didn't know they'd strike this FASTIt's such a hazardous duty being brides in Ep1s.

2nd Ning Uncle (Ning Xue Rui) negotiates with the bandits. "How about taking my only son instead." :OO
The future sister-in-law, Madam Fei Zuo. Calm. Polished. She cares, but slips in a warning: if the bride spends even one night away, she will be seen as a woman who’s already been touched, and this marriage is over before it begins.
Dad Ning: "Quick sell my land!" Or so you think a dad would do that. This father mourns the idea of selling his deeds more than his own daughter's abduction. Only when Mom Ning says she’ll die with her daughter if it comes to that does he give in. But every line of his face says it: he despises every inch of this compromise.
Feng Da Jiao (literally Feng Big Feet, lol) charges out to rescue the (not-his-)bride, except he tumbles down a snowy slope and knocks himself out cold. Btw, his cousin/brother's name is Feng Ni Wei: Feng Oily Taste. What is wrong with their parents/uncles?
This is Ou Hao.

[Ep2[Jump to: Top | CastComments]

Nevermind. Dad Ning is NOT selling his land. Absolutely not. Not after the in-law intends to return the dowry. Money is non-negotiable. His daughter is. And so Dad Ning assures the in-law, she will get his pure daughter-in-law. Hm?

Ning Xiu Xiu is rescued – courtesy of Guo Brother – but then Feng Da Jiao barrels in, knocks Guo over, and Guo immediately plays dead. It's awesome. Because he's part of the bandits and no one can know he saved her. Being knocked out is perfect. *Thumbs up
The bride isn't back yet, but the wedding must go on! Tonight, Dad Ning and Madam Fei Zuo are accomplices. They swap in the sister as the "pure maiden" bride. The doofus groom, Fei Wen Dian, beams happily, having no idea the woman he loves is shorter than yesterday.
Ning Su Su only agreed because she thought she was buying time for her father to save Ning Xiu Xiu.

[Ep3[Jump to: Top | CastComments]

After Feng Da Jiao saves Ning Xiu Xiu, he tells her not to tell anyone. No one in this story seems to want credit for saving herThat same night, Feng Da Jiao also runs into Du Chun Lin, who’s being chased by Ma Zi (the kidnappers), and saves him too – this time getting a generous reward.

Ning Xiu Xiu runs through the night to get home. Her father is shocked she’s back. I don't know what he was expecting. For her to never come back? Ning Xiu Xiu is crushed to learn her parents didn’t pay the ransom, and even more so when she finds out her dearest sister married her lover.
Her father’s only concern is whether she’s still "pure." Broken, she lies and says the bandits came to her one by one, the door never stayed shut for the whole night. Aw, Xiu Xiu. Why! Maybe because she’s too hurt to care about her own reputation, or maybe it's to hurt her family in return. Her mother did try to save her, but Ning Xiu Xiu doesn’t know that; she’s too deep in grief and anger.

Rumours about Ning Xiu Xiu spread like wildfire in the village.

Feng Er seizes the opportunity to ask for Ning Xiu Xiu's hand for his son, Feng Da Jiao. He thinks he can score a dowry for taking in a "damaged commodity." >_> Dad Ning refuses, saying he’ll take care of her for life rather than let that happen. This father. It's not that he completely doesn't care. His children are just second. But Ning Xiu Xiu accepts immediately once she hears the groom is Feng Da Jiao. She threatens to end her life if her parents stand in her way, and when they relent, she walks out immediately. Not because she’s running towards a marriage, but because she’s running from a house that stopped being home the night they chose their land over her.

[Ep4[Jump to: Top | CastComments]
Xiu Xiu makes three vicious vows 毒誓 (du shi; if these vows are broken, vicious consequences will fall upon her):

1) An, Ning Xiu Xiu, the moment I step out of Ning house, I won't step a foot back in
2) An, Ning Xiu Xiu, won't eat a single grain of their rice or own anything from Ning.
3) An, Ning Xiu Xiu, don't have a dad.
Su Su is a blubbering blob of confusion and devastation. She's shocked to hear his sister is marrying Feng Da Jiao. She still thinks Xiu Xiu can marry Fei Wen Dian. Poor Su Su. Your marriage to Fei is set in stone too, sweetie D:
After boldly committing to the marriage, Feng Er (ML's Dad) is soooo guilty. HAHAHA. His beady little eyes keep darting everywhere, avoiding his son’s stare as Da Jiao demands to know why the love of his life Xiu Xiu is sleeping on his bed. Waaaait, Even Da Jiao doesn't know Xiu Xiu wasn’t assaulted, but it doesn't matter anyway. What breaks him is that she had nowhere to go. Not Ning’s. Not Fei’s. So he’ll take her. He wants her. He loves her.
Mom Feng is actually happy her son married the woman he loves despite what happened to Xiu Xiu. (ಥ﹏ಥ) Totally unexpected, because 1) this MIL doesn't mind about  Xiu Xiu and 2) I’m not used to this actress playing a nice mom! This mom wants to treat Xiu Xiu the way she was raised – like a princess. Despite their circumstances. So when Xiu Xiu makes the outrageous request to have her teeth brushed, Mom Feng is on it: So... how exactly do I help you brush these? LOL. There’s no toothpaste, but Xiu Xiu will settle for salt. Salt! Dad's like How many times do you need to brush? Just twice, lol.

[Ep5[Jump to: Top | CastComments]

Da Jiao wants the best for Xiu Xiu and even coaches his rival (Fei Wen Dian) on how to gloriously marry Xiu Xiu to have her back. Awwww, Da Jiao! Self-sacrifice, thy name is Big Feet.

But Fei Wen Dian doesn't commit. Wuss. Madam Fei Zuo knows him too well; she opens the door wide, gives him the opportunity to do it, but he hesitates. He minds about Xiu Xiu's past.

So Da Jiao commits. And when Big Feet commits, he COM-MITS. The wedding is a parade: suonas and cymbals blaring, a massive entourage marching through the streets, marriage candy flying into every hand. They loop the village three times. He wants everyone to know he's gloriously marrying Xiu Xiu because she deserves it. Mom Feng watches, beaming with pride at her son. AWWWWWW T__________T My beloved Big Feet.

[Ep6[Jump to: Top | CastComments]

Madam Fei Zuo drugs Fei Wen Dian and Su Su so that they consummate their marriage. POOR SU SU

[Ep7[Jump to: Top | CastComments]

Fei Wen Dian leaves the village. DUDE. You’re just leaving Su Su here?!? UGHHHH. Madam Fei Zuo is gentle with Su Su, carefully asking if Fei Wen Dian said anything about last night after consummating the marriage. Su Su, too young and confused to understand, is teary and replies he hasn't said anything. Madam comforts her that from now on, Su Su has her to talk to.
Su Su wants her braids instead of this up-do. Sweetie, you can't have that hair anymore. You're married now. She sobs about how ugly it looks and how much she misses Xiu Xiu styling her hair. Honey, that was also ugly.
Mom Ning... she's dying. She's giving out her last words. To her son, she wants him to understand his father and the honour of their family that he should also uphold. To her son-in-law, she's relieved that he loves her daughter. She knew it; her daughter would never pick someone random. Still, she begs him that if the day ever comes when he doesn’t love her anymore, please, please send her back. If Mom is still alive, this mom will love her. If she’s dead, then let her cry at her grave so she can still be with her. T_T. Da Jiao swears though that he’ll never stop liking her – that as long as she’s willing to stay with the poor, ordinary him, he will never abandon her. Mom knows her girl will never fear hard days. She’ll bloom anywhere.
In her final hours, Mom Ning even forgives Father Ning. How could she not? They’ll be buried together one day. She understands him. Land to him is blood; it will always matter more than herself, more than the children. That’s not something that can be changed. She tells him to let the children live their own lives now, to stop meddling. She even starts talking about her coffin: she wants it to be four (Chinese) inches thick – one inch to represent each member of her family, perhaps? By morning, Mom Ning is gone. She slipped away (peacefully) in her sleep. I was right on the verge of crying, tears were pooling in my eyes – then Dad Ning scares it back in:
Man was exhaling out loud, raspy, whooping breaths directly onto the dead woman’s face. 我滴媽呀.
Ning Family never properly invited Da Jiao and his parents to the funeral. But that doesn't stop Da Jiao from being filial. He gives Mom Ning MASSIVE paper offerings. Normally they're flat sheets in designs of houses, money, mahjong sets, whatever the deceased liked. But Da Jiao bought full 3D, bigger than people ones. He gave her a paper house and a paper cow, so she’d have somewhere to live and fresh milk to drink. Sweet man. Meanwhile, Feng Er skips the walk to the burial site because he didn't get an in-law spot in the procession. But Mom Feng shows up because does it matter where you start walking? Sweet woman.

As for Xiu Xiu, she kept to her vows. She never set foot in the Ning house to pay her respects. Only when the coffin was carried out toward the burial site did she appear.

[Ep8[Jump to: Top | CastComments]
Dad Ning and Feng Er together have a combined age of over 150, and here they are having a saliva spit war. Dad Ning is upset that his precious daughter is farming. Oh please. You're mad at Feng Er for why she's out here? You? Pei! Feng Er fires back: "Other people are Iron Roosters 鐵公雞 – stingy, won’t give a single feather. But you are a Syrup-Coated Rooster 糖稀公雞 – don’t just give nothing, but take everything you stick to."
Our sticky Syrup-Coated Rooster (=Dad Ning) perches firmly on his rock. Feng Er doesn't want to lose and be below, but petty Dad Ning shoves him off. Omg they're so old and mature LOL.

Xiu Xiu has had enough of their maturity. "Dad!"
"Aye!"
LMAO
Feng Er rubs it in because Xiu Xiu was calling him. "Dad is coming!" Haha

When Dad Ning finally stumbles off the rock,  Feng Er tosses out, "Careful. Don’t fall and end up paralyzed on one side." These two are nasty. I’m just glad they’re each other’s in-laws. Technically, Feng Er "won," (especially with that "Dad"), but then he realizes for his useless pride, he lost the land Dad Ning promised as dowry. LOL.
Xiu Xiu is bruised from farm labour and Da Jiao is too shy to even press a boiled egg to her skin.
The next day Feng Er is feng – loses his mind. Because the bathing basin that his son found for Xiu Xiu was the family's cooking pot. ONLY cooking pot. His place isn't like hers where there's small gang (缸 = jar) in medium gangs in large gangs. They only have one gang! And she sat her naked body in it. It's useless! The mom and son think he's making a commotion over nothing. Y'all. For once I'm on Feng Er's side LOL. I cannot believe the one person who cares about hygiene is him. In fact, Da Jiao thinks food will taste even better now. 香! OMG LMAO. This love is too much
Ning Ke Jin (Xiu Xiu and Su Su’s older brother) has ears as soft as tofu – whoever speaks to him last wins his opinion. Dad Ning talks his ear off about how his daughter is suffering, and Ning Ke Jin concludes they should just give the Fengs more land. Dad’s speechless. HA. Anyway, Ning Ke Jin is eventually convinced that Feng family is mistreating Xiu Xiu, and off he goes...
Xiu Xiu calmly assures her brother if the Feng's hadn't "offered her shelter" (收留), she would've died this winter. Unspoken: she means by her own hand. Feng family saved her. Xiu Xiu isn't suffering at all. Aw :(. Alright, and so off brother goes. Lol. What is his purpose xD

That night at dinner, loud slurping stops everyone in their tracks. Is it Feng Er? Is it Da Jiao? No, it’s Xiu Xiu. LOL. Feng Er halts the meal for an announcement: he’s correcting her. They didn't "offer her shelter." They married her in, properly with all the rites. "You are my family." This isn’t charity. This is her home. He also announces that from now on, the women of the house will do the lighter work.
Feng Er's 2nd announcement: "Can you drink like before?" HAHA. "Who can take that? What I mean is what if you accidentally choke and die." This foul-mouthed dad is actually really cute! Then he slurps a bit too loudly himself, glances around with beady eyes, and sips quietly. Adorable.
Meanwhile, Dad Ning shows his sharpest side as a debt collector, waiting until interest piles so high the family he’s targeting has no choice but to sell their land.

Xiu Xiu wants to earn money (I just can't avoid a Business-Woman Trope, can I?) and learns straw raincoat weaving. Da Jiao doesn't like it because the grass will slice her skin. She asks what use pretty hands have anyway, and Da Jiao blurts it is useful. "An likes it." Awww, Big Feet likes her pretty hands ~~
But Su Su… she’s still confused, hollow, sad after losing her virginity to a man who doesn’t care. Aw D: I hate this for her. She's so innocent. She doesn’t know what to feel, so she looks to her sister. Xiu Xiu holds her close and promises she’ll always be there. (And so this is when Xiu Xiu learns that Madam Fei Zuo lied that day about Su Su consummating her marriage. But at this point, it doesn’t even matter anymore).

[Ep9[Jump to: Top | CastComments]

Guo Gui Yao expands Su Su's horizons and introduces new delicacies to her. Trusting him, she puts the whole thing in her mouth. Um. But it's still wiggling. Of course it is, it's live octopus. Oh, Xing Fei. LOL. Guo Gui Yao makes up to her with the newest craze: chocolate. Are these two going to be a couple....??
Fei Wen Dian writes a letter that he's not returning home for the New Year. Madam Fei Zuo is surprised he left no words for his wife. Su Su – the wife – isn't. They're not close.

Fei Family. Fei Wen Dian is actually really successful at his work, and genuine about agricultural reforms. While Madam Fei Zu generously donates every year. Madam Fei Zuo also genuinely cares about Su Su and panics when her mouth is all black. (It's chocolate)
Feng Er is also spoiling his daughter-in-law. He buys Xiu Xiu “western fire”(matches) so she doesn’t have to wrestle with kindling every morning. I hope he's doing this genuinely for her, and not for the land that she promised to ask Su Su about.

It's finally settling in for Da Jiao that Xiu Xiu isn't leaving. Aw, was he always bracing himself for her to go? He shares his joy with his favourite rock, promising to find it a partner too. Solid bros. Solid men.
Xiu Xiu goes to pay respects to her relatives for the New Year. Dad Ning lights up. "It’s Xiu ah~" But she walks right past him, muttering, "There's no one in this yard." Pft.
Happy New Year, Dad Ning.

[Ep10[Jump to: Top | CastComments]

They’re not rich for no reason. That is Dad Ning and Madam Fei Zuo. Dad Ning doesn't even try to keep his mouth closed, practically drooling as he sweet-talks the drunk lender (Feng Si (4), brother of Feng Er (2)) out of this land. This is predation. As for Madam Fei Zuo, unlike Dad Ning who has no finesse and just raw greed, never bares her teeth. She rents land, as promised, to Xiu Xiu. But this land is a poisoned gift. Originally, it was rented to Tie Tou, cousin and true bro to Da Jiao. With Tie Tou owing a mountain of debt, Madam had every right to reroute her land, but since it's re-routed to Da Jiao, that's like betrayal. All of Tie Tou's resentment is directed to Da Jiao. It might be a stretch to say she calculated this because of Xiu Xiu, but there’s no way Madam Fei Zuo didn't know this would strain the family ties. There's no cracks to call foul, yet the damage is sharp.
He'll swallow you whole.
Not a crack.
Spring has arrived. 立春 (Li Chun). For farmers, this isn’t just a calendar date; it's the promise of harvest. Chinese calendar is a lunisolar calendar that takes the sun's position into account to mark the seasons (e.g. during 立春, the sun reaches 315° longitude). This day is especially important for our farmers – that's when they can anticipate when they can finally break the ground and grow life again. Now about the feather ritual they're doing: I don't know. They call it "Testing for Spring Energy" where they plant a shoot into the ground, and if the feather lies out, the ground is ready. Yes, it rises. The farmers erupt in cheers.
Xiu Xiu's swindling too! For good reasons. Intellectually, she is on par with Dad Ning and Madam Fei Zuo. She cons (lol) her stingy father-in-law, Feng Er, into buying an ox because with more land to farm, they need horsepower. First, she pretends to want the expensive prime ox, then "settles" for the odd one-horned ox, tricking the seller into lowering the price. But that unicorn was her goal all along. Now she has to convince Feng Er: she pays one silver dollar as a deposit, which forces Feng Er to cough up the remaining two or lose the deposit. Man's a miser and would never let that happen. And so we have an ox!
Feng Er, hahaha.

[Ep11[Jump to: Top | CastComments]

Da Jiao wants to return the land, but Su Su, being Madam Fei Zuo's unwitting cheerleader, snaps at him for being ungrateful to Madam's graciousness.

Du Chun Lin offers Da Jiao city life. Xiu Xiu was so happy for her husband. But husband wants to be a farm man.

[Ep12[Jump to: Top | CastComments]

Feng Er cannot sleep in peace. Everyone’s trying to sneak into his bed to snatch the rent contract. He’s fuming, threatening divorce, and bringing up the “scam” that got him married in the first place. He married Mom Feng because of the saying 女大三抱金卷 = women 3 years older bring prosperity and fortune. But... she’s actually 9 years older. 9! Triple the fortune, maybe? xD. No need to snoop though. Xiu Xiu has a better plan: send Da Jiao to the city. Without his son farming with him, Feng Er is forced to forfeit the land. That's two bird with one stone.

Da Jiao is in the city, discovering he might actually enjoy this patri(ughhhhhhh)otic work. Things have been great except he knows Xiu Xiu wrote a letter to her ex, and oh, he just got grazed by a gunshot. Xiu Xiu rushes to hospital, frantic. Then the nurse tells her to pull down his pants for an injection. Wait…what? Shy, Xiu Xiu hesitates, but can’t help smiling as he screams. Her husband is fearless when it comes to guns. But an itty bitty needle? He's a cute coward, lol.

Da Jiao, ever earnest, asks about the letter. Xiu Xiu explains it was a favour for Madam Fei Zuo. She wrote one word, 歸 = “return.” In its older sense, it means a woman goes to her husband’s household – belonging to another household. She’s telling Fei Wen Dian to return where he belongs, while clearly marking herself as separate.
When Da Jiao finally returns, he’s celebrated like a hero, carried in a chair-carriage. He ducks under the doorframe himself because apparently, no one cares if he smashes his head. Luxury isn't part of this honuor. He might be the hero, but in his heart, he's celebrating the angel of his life: his wife. He agrees with the nuse who said he married an angel. He asks if she really, really won’t leave. She promises she isn’t just saying it. At first she married him because he saved her and that she feels safe with him. But slowly...

Xiu Xiu: You were considerate of An. You never forced An. You never hurt An. That let An know you bit by bit – your kindness, your abilities, the way you treat An. They say you married an angel. But it is An who found you. You are the mountain An can lean on. Marrying you was the best thing An did. An never felt so secure and safe before.

Overwhelmed, Da Jiao swings to her side of the bed. He looks into her eyes, sees consent, and strips the curtain dividing them. One bed. One heart. Truly, one.
[Ep13[Jump to: Top | CastComments]

Da Jiao: “A Xiu! What is this?!” Your wife's a virgin! That's what it is. Well, not anymore
Bro Ning asks Dad Ning for 200 silver to buy shiny new guns. Pft. A full sloshing spray of spit is all he's giving. I wish I caught that "traject-ing" saliva, hahaha.
Tie Tou and his mother get their land back. I am with Feng Er in ignoring Tie Tou's mom who's thanking them for "returning" the land. Feng Family had every right to rent it and Tie Tou’s side still flung the nastiest accusations.

Aw :( Su Su is pregnant. Madam Fei Zuo is so hyped she basically bullies the doctor into confirming it. Could Su Su just be bloated? Is Fei Wen Dian that potent? As for the father of the fetus, it's like the end of the world. Ha.

Uh oh. The guy Dad Ning scammed the land from (Feng Si) joined the bandits. This won't be good.

[Ep14[Jump to: Top | CastComments]

2nd Uncle Feng’s son injured someone and now he owes 500 silver in compensation. He will sell his land. Now here's a normal reaction from a father. But he's also the father who offered his son in exchange for Xiu Xiu in Ep1 xD. Now that I know him, I realize he wasn’t heartless to his son, just genuinely believed the bandits only wanted collateral and wouldn’t hurt anyone. He’s too decent for this world.

Madam Fei Zuo offers 16 silver per unit, and even tells him to keep his best land. She's efficient, fair, and still scoring a bargain. Respect.

Meanwhile, 2nd Uncle Feng’s biological brother Dad Feng proves he’s the definition of treachery. blocks the deal (16) because Ning Family land must never fall into outsider hands. Then he offers... 10 silver a unit. The audacity. This brother. This father.

But Dad Ning – this treachery incarnate!!! – lowballs his own brother. Of course. If he can abandon his kidnapped daughter to keep his land, then ripping off his brother is child’s play. He blocks Madam's deal and offers – get this – 10 silver a unit. The audacity!

The Ning siblings aren’t having it. Xiu Xiu, Su Su, and Ke Jin all step in. If only Ning can buy Ning land, they'll buy it at the original offer – 16. Justice served.

Poor Feng Er though, cursed with zero land-luck. LOL. Xiu Xiu didn't buy a piece of land for him. Because she can't rob her uncle’s misfortune for his gain. Every time she farms that land, she knows her uncle will be heartbroken.

[Ep15[Jump to: Top | CastComments]

Tie Tou. True to his name – steel head.  He's hard-headed to the extreme. Fired up about the farmers’ hardships, he starts a union. Noble cause. But terrible execution. He’s basically shaking a stick at landlords demanding rights. Bruh, they do own the land. It’s bullying in the name of justice. Thankfully, Brother Ning (the bigger bully? Sigh. Lol)  shows up with his men and scatters the chaos.

[Ep16[Jump to: Top | CastComments]

Very uncharacteristically, Dad Ning signs a perpetual lease that would let farmers rent the land forever. Yeah, no. This is Dad Ning. Of course it’s a scam. It's a yin-yang contract. They existed so soon.

[Ep17[Jump to: Top | CastComments]

Madam Fei Zuo honours her forever leases, except she finds out Dad Ning's was fake. She pressures Tie Tou, union rep, that if he doesn’t expose Ning’s fake contract, she will take back her genuine lease from him. (What is the contract for then if she can just yoink it back).

[Ep18[Jump to: Top | CastComments]

Su Su's period arrives. And her man leaves. Fei Wen Dian!!!! Are you serious right now. POOR SUSU.  Pregnant, she was sad/confused. Not pregnant, she's even sadder. Now she doesn't even get good food from Madam Fei Zuo, lol. I don't blame Madam for that. She's bedridden. And then Su Su did eat herself into this farce, loool

The military storms in like rabid dogs, snatching up random men for conscription. I can't believe they showed the military like this. But I think they were known to be the corrupted cliques in that era. Da Jiao nearly got dragged off but was saved by Guo Gui Yao, who now has to flee the village to stay safe.

The recruiters also barge into Ning Bro's camp. Xiu Xiu had to think real fast to protect Tie Tou and Ni Wei (Feng 4's son) from being captured. She also had to write real fast. One is Feng and the other is Fei, such complicated words to write. She had to make up easier names. That almost gave them away, but there's Bro Ning outside, handling it. Close call.

The fake pregnancy really bloats up. Dad Ning wants payback against Madam Fei Zuo for exposing the yin-yang contract, so he uses Su Su (OMG) as leverage, demanding five units of land from Madam Fei Zuo because..... Su Su is suffering psychological damage. I don't know where Dad Ning's demand even make sense. Sweet Xiu Xiu refuses to let her sister be treated as a bargaining chip and takes Su Su straight back to her home.

[Ep19[Jump to: Top | CastComments]

Xiu Xiu is pregnant! Su Su’s happiness for her is so pure. Not a drop of jealousy. Never change, Su Su. Never.

Da Jiao, following Guo Gui Yao (a merchant), sees the ocean for the first time. Everything in the city area is sparkling! Until he realizes how Guo Gui Yao "does business." Thievery. OMG I wish I didn't SEE.

急死 Feng Er la xD. The second stingiest man alive tries to be sweet and gives Xiu Xiu an egg – perfect for a pregnant lady. But Xiu Xiu turns around and hands is straight to Su Su. Su Su doesn't think twice that maybe it wasn't meant for her and would have swallowed it whole if she could. Bless Su Su xD
Feng Si4 bought Ma Zi's men, the bandits, to raid the village. THIS TRAITOR.

[Ep20[Jump to: Top | CastComments]

I want to watch farming, cows, families....not heavy-action-village-siege ARGHHH щ(゚Д゚щ)

Ma Zi has surrounded the village 🙄. There's exactly one good thing about this. They self-expose that letting Xiu Xiu escape unharmed was their biggest humiliation. And you let everyone know. *Slow clap*

The women, hiding at first, join the defence squad. (Madam Fei Zuo might have shed a tear when Xiu Xiu and Su Su came back for her... but she's missing from this squad. That is characteristic of her, lol).

Xiu Xiu (pregnant) charges out beyond the gates to save the villagers. But the moment guns point at her, she stops, ready to sacrifice herself. Except she plans to die by her own hand before Ma Zi can lay a finger on her.

Da Jiao LEAPS IN to save Xiu Xiu. Awww, My man, Big Feet! <3

Feng Si4 – a traitor to the last breath –  stumbles out towards Ma Zi's men only to be shot down by their own reckless gunfire.

The villagers are victorious. Ma Zi failed because he didn't hire the two ladies from Ep1.

[Ep21[Jump to: Top | CastComments]

From the top of the gates, Xiu Xiu shouts to Da Jiao, who's chasing the remnants of Ma Zi’s army. “You’re a dad!” AWWWW.
Celebration time! The whole village gathers... except Da Jiao. The hero of the hour is too busy pressing his ear to Xiu Xiu’s belly, listening to their baby’s heartbeat. To him, Xiu Xiu is the true hero. She asks if he was scared. He admits he was… but, “The heavens sent me to save you.” There's tears in his eyes as he said that. She pleads, “Then tell the heavens this is the last time. Please?”

Xiu Xiu slips away from the party to free Feng Si’s family, locked up for his betrayal. They’re innocent. But Ni Wei (aka Greasy Smell) has the gall to sneer instead of thanking her. He swears vengeance for his father. ?!?!?!?

(Also LOL. Ni Wei's didi is called Mei Wei = No Smell) Oh but Mei Wei and his mother are caught again. Ni Wei has disappeared... Feng Er2, being the brother of FengSi4, adopts Mei Wei. The mom sobs and thanks him. From now on Feng Er will be her son's dad and Mom Feng will be the mom. T_T. (But they're later released)

Guo Gui Yao has a wife. And he was that into Lu Lu, the opera singer...

[Ep22[Jump to: Top | CastComments]
The bathtub has so much story! I love it LOL. Da Jiao saved up to buy it for his wife, but gave the money away to help Lu Lu save her brother. Lu Lu returned it – smitten after realizing he wasn’t like other men. Now she’s delulu in love, chasing him even though he has a pregnant wife. Even if that means wrecking a loving, happy family.

Our Big Feet doesn't sway. No. When De Lu Lu tells him to introduce him to his wife, he's like...

Da Jiao: How?
Lu Lu: Yuu're just trying to prove to your wife that you and I aren't close.
Da Jiao (very confused): Are we close?

But before you know it, Lu Lu has already slipped into the house... as Feng Er’s goddaughter....

[Ep23[Jump to: Top | CastComments]

Feng Er is flat-out cursed, haha. Feng Er just can’t land land. Lu Lu literally wants to gift him a plot for free, but before the deal is done, she goes bankrupt. (Feng Er flipped on her so fast, lol).

For some reason Dad Ning is really against Xiu Xiu planting red sages.

[Ep24[Jump to: Top | CastComments]

This woman’s a curse. Lu Lu opened a casino and now Ning Bro is addicted to gambling. You will not catch Feng Er within a ten-foot pole radius of that place though lol. Dad Ning at least twenty

Poor Yin Zi. Her dad “turned over a new leaf”…by spinning it a full 360. Still selfish, still a slob, hoarding food while his sick wife and starving kids have nothing.

DISGUSTING. Did Dad Ning want to r*pe Yin Zi?! This character has crossed the point of no return for me. The attempt is all it took.
LU LU STRIKES AGAIN. Because of Lu Lu, pregnant Xiu Xiu ends up drinking alcohol. The stakes: Big Feet. It’s not that she’d lose him if she fails to out-drink Lu Lu, but Xiu Xiu has to shut out Lu Lu once and for all. Yes, we must de-lulu. But at the cost of Little Feet?? 😭

[Ep25[Jump to: Top | CastComments]

OH PHEW. We fix one thing. Xiu Xiu was bluffing! She didn’t drink alcohol \o/ She had to win this even if it meant cheating.

Xiu Xiu: An can lose everything, but An's Da Jiao, An cannot lose.
The next morning, Xiu Xiu dotes on her husband, making him wonder if he did something wrong xD. Big Feet, you can do no wrong. ღゝ◡╹)ノ♡
But then she does take one sip and Lu Lu of all people stops her. The duel is settled. Lu Lu sees how deep Xiu Xiu and Da Jiao’s love runs, and Xiu Xiu respects Lu Lu (for what, I don’t know).

Dad Ning sabotages her entire red sage crop – pregnant Xiu Xiu just cannot catch a break. Dad Ning says they’re cursed.

The village fool, Sha Tiao, is pregnant. Which disgusting piece of trash took advantage of this girl? Everyone points at Tie Tou. Her parents literally dump her at his house. Except he’s innocent! Dude was just tying her hair!

[Ep26[Jump to: Top | CastComments]

Yin Zi is set to become Xiu Xiu’s stepmom. UGH. they’re the same age, yet Yin Zi is marrying Dad Ning. Xiu Xiu pleads with Ning Bro to intervene, but he’s basically saying his sister should consider it an honour that Dad Ning is marrying her “legitimately” and not just keeping her as a concubine. The bar is in hell.
But Yin Zi gives her first time to Tie Tou, whose head is so dense that he doesn’t even realize where all her money for her mom’s medicine came from.

[Ep27[Jump to: Top | CastComments]

Xiu Xiu begs Yin Zi not to marry Father Ning. She swears Yin Zi would be happier with Tie Tou, even if life is poor. Yin Zi doesn't mind living a poor life. But it's for her family
Wedding night horror: Father Ning beats Yin Zi when he learns she’s not a virgin. Yin Zi comes back swinging...with a stick against his feather duster. She lays it out: take her as she is or divorce her. This is kinda sick. But… I laughed...I'm sick.
Impressive screaming transition from Yin Zi consummating the marriage (😱) to Sha Tiao giving birth. What a night. It's so brutal to Tie Tou too. He loses Yin Zi and becomes a father to a kid that isn't his. He’s excellent in this scene though – happy the baby’s alive, but also crushed and confused. But the baby might give him motivation to live on without Yin Zi. As for Sha Tiao's...well, she's a mom now. She also reacts negatively to her parents, not wanting to go back. Just don't me the bio father of her child is her father. Please
Everyone leaves baby essentials at Tie Tou’s door. Sweet gesture, but in secret...because no one wants to be mistaken as the r*pist. Poor Tie Tou though.
It's morning. Xiu Xiu sews socks for her Da Jiao. Her Big Feet needs some big socks. It's all peaceful. Until Tie Tou’s mother chases Sha Tiao, beating her, because the village fool won’t breastfeed her newborn. 😱😂 ...They're making everything that was once horrible...funny.
Yin Zi, like Xiu Xiu, blooms even in misery. Somehow she tames Father Ning—with her body. She demands money for her siblings’ schooling, even climbs on top of him to beat him. Horrible. And yet… I laughed 😭.

Xiu Xiu miscarries. Little Feet T_____T She finds some comfort, though, in Ke La, Tie Tou’s child.

[Ep28[Jump to: Top | CastComments]

Years pass. Xiu Xiu has a son: Feng Jia Min. Huh. Medium Feet doesn't deserve the gestation screen-time eh.

After Feng Si4’s wife dies, Xiu Xiu takes in Mei Wei. But Mei Wei… this ungrateful kid. He claims he’s eating their food because the family “owes” him. Kid. Your father led bandits to slaughter villagers, your mother took food from Xiu Xiu and still starved. What do you want? Sit down, boy.

Fei Wen Dian returns! He’s genuinely happy Xiu Xiu’s a mom. Says he’s back to teach. Meanwhile, I was wondering why Su Su looks better. It's the bangs!
[Ep29[Jump to: Top | CastComments]

Fei Wen Dian's real mission actually isn't to teach. He’s a CCP rep. Lovely. I knew I liked this guy the moment I saw him. His mission: convince the biggest merchants to donate food to the starving. Beggars are everywhere, theft is rampant. And the biggest merchants are Madam Fei Zuo and Father Ning. GOOD LUCK.

Meanwhile, Yin Zi’s pregnant. Her trash father tells her to use her belly to extort food from Father Ning. The trashier Father Ning kicks him out. Yin Zi is upset because he's her trashy father still. So Father Ning literally loops a rope around his own neck, letting her drag him back inside. An refuses to laugh!
Madam Fei Zuo tries to cheat by hiding her stash. Too bad Fei Wen Dian actually isn’t stupid, and with the help of Su Su, they locate it, and steal it for the people! Haha. "Poor" SIL. As for Father Ning's stockpile. Yeah, no.

[Ep30[Jump to: Top | CastComments]

Fei Wen Dian, Da Jiao, and co spread communism by giving food to the poor by stealing from the rich. This double standard. Tie Tou’s violent union organizing is portrayed as “bullying in the name of justice,” but when our main characters do a similar thing, it’s righteous.

Yin Zi gives birth to a boy, Ning Ke Yu (little name: Chu Ti = First Cry). Could...Yin Zi's son be Tie Tou's... and what if Tie Tou's son is Dad Ning's 🤯Uncle Ning is happy for his brother, Father Ning. Get a backbone, sir! Do you not hold a grudge on him for treacherously blocking the land deal to save your son?!

At last, Madam Fei Zuo's story! She has no children and no husband because not long after she married, her (very old) husband passed away from illness. She ended up raising her father-in-law's (adopted?) son, Fei Wen Dian. For 18 years, she's been this family, guarding. So lonely :(

Fei Wen Dian and Da Jiao are arrested because they are CCP supporters. Feng Er gives all his money to Xiu Xiu to save his son, Da Jiao, unlike a certain other father.

[Ep31[Jump to: Top | CastComments]

Feng Er dies. My unlucky humour dude is gone. Da Jiao bought him land before he passed though.
It's the 1940s. Japan invades, takes Xiu Xiu’s land, and dictates what crops can be planted.

[Ep32[Jump to: Top | CastComments]

Fei Wen Dian dies – offscreen! POOR SU SU. Madam Fei Zuo is also devastated, after all, she practically raised him like her own child. With his death, the Fei family line ends. She throws Su Su out, but in a twisted way, it frees Su Su from repeating her lonely fate. Still, POOR SU SU.

Ni Wei (Feng Si4's ungrateful kid) is back...

[Ep33[Jump to: Top | CastComments]

Greasy Ni Wei kidnaps Su Su, but Guo Gui Yao saves her and nearly dies in the process. She nurses him back to health, he falls for her, and immediately off to bed they go. Village romance at its finest
One try and Su Su is pregnant. So the problem was Fei Wen Dian. That's why their genes ended eh. At the same time, she’s still caring for Madam Fei Zuo, who’s gone mad after Fei Wen Dian’s death. The first person Su Su tells about her pregnancy is Xiu Xiu, who beams with joy but also guilt. Poor Su Su. Please let Su Su be happy!
Meanwhile, the Japanese military kills Sha Tiao. So who's the father!

[Ep34[Jump to: Top | CastComments]

Tie Tou vows revenge for Sha Tiao, the mother of his son. Aw, the Steel Head with a marshmallow heart
Guo Gui Yao vanishes for months, dragged away by the Japanese, but finally returns. He’s broke, but still asks Father Ning for Su Su’s hand. Dad Ning plays the hard game but agrees.

Madam Fei Zuo finds out Su Su is pregnant. Labour becomes instant. Thankfully, the baby is delivered safely. But Su Su isn't safe. Madam Fei Zuo poisons the congee. Su Su and Guo Gui Yao die without knowing a thing. Madam Fei Zuo follows them, drinking the same poisoned porridge. Never eat sister-in-law’s cooking. The first time she drugged the alcohol to make Su Su and Fei Wen Dian make babies. Now she poisons Su Su because she made babies
POOR SUSU T_T
She's sad too...but why take Su Su! My girl hasn't had a day of newlywed life!

At least Su Su’s baby survives and ends up safe with Xiu Xiu.

[Ep35[Jump to: Top | CastComments]

Xiu Xiu rallies her people to burn their crops so the Japanese can’t eat off their land to kill their people. She also steps foot in Ning House for the first time to urge Father Ning to join. He refuses. And so the plan moves forward without him. When the soldiers arrive early, everyone scrambles to hide evidence.

Uncle Ning, village chief, is caught, and Father Ning has to hand over his untouched stock. And so Da Jiao sets his fields ablaze too, and Father Ning actually gives him a thumbs up. He and Xiu Xiu even fake-cry together to sell the act.
But Greasy Ni Wei has joined the Japanese army. He finds proof the fire wasn’t natural and blackmails Father Ning with Uncle Ning’s life. So Father Ning caves, revealing the storage location, except it's his own.

[Ep36[Jump to: Top | CastComments]

Ning Bro returns like a hero, saving the villagers because he joined the right army. Father Ning is still left without grain, but Yin Zi’s stingy dad shows up to give him food. Because we're all about sharing now.
Then the great victory: CCP triumphs. At last, salvation! A brand-new government rises, promising to plant crops on every single plot of land so no one starves. Every field equal, every stomach fed. Every field equal, every stomach fed. Beautiful

And here comes Father Ning – the man who withheld and sinned plenty – finally redeemed by apologizing to Xiu Xiu and Su Su by donating land to Xiu Xiu and Su Su to the Party. Overnight, he’s transformed from a stubborn sinner into a model citizen. And we all shall forgive him because nothing says "good man" like voluntarily giving everything to the Party and smiling about it. And now they can all thank the government for providing food on land that was originally theirs. All hail CCP!
Father Ning did leave 15 units he promised Xiu Xiu. He also had 15 for Ke Yu, 30 for Bro Ning (and his grandson). And now Father Ning can rest in peace.
Xiu Xiu  reaches out to Yin Zi, who’s been too proud to ask for help. She updates her that Ning Ke Yu can go to school. She also realizes she never called Yin Zi “xiao niang.” (Little mom)

Xiu Xiu: If I call you, do you dare answer?
Yin Zi: If you dare call me, I dare answer.
Xiu XiuNiang (mother)
Yin Zi: Aye!
Xiu XiuXiao Niang
Yin Zi: Aye, My eldest daughter!

Do Yin Zi and Tie Tou still have a chance? Maybe.
It's the final episode, and we learn Da Jiao’s real name was Feng Xue Yong

Some decades later, Da Jiao is swept away by the flood, never to return. Big Feet doesn't work on water! OMG. Xiu Xiu lives a long life, and in the end, reunites with her Da Jiao in the afterlife.
The land continues to thrive – in the safe, loving hands of the government. Truly, a happy ending for everyone. The end.

Remarks

[First Impression (Ep1-6)] Engrossing! If I’m going to watch these big family village dramas, I like them a little dramatic – just high enough to be thrilling (like the bride-napping) without too much pessimism or sadness. Generally, I like it with drama. The hints of comedy sprinkled in are reassuring. I can already tell Dad Ning is going to be both awful and hilarious. The in-laws don't seem so bad either. Everyone feels very animated, like they belong in this village.

Warning: Get tissues. So far, I've been crying because of the warmth and happiness from Ou Hao's character. If nothing goes wrong, this might be Ou Hao’s defining role for me. The way his Feng Da Jiao handled everything, the unshakable respect he has for Xiu Xiu, it’s the purest thing.

I was ready to say people are far too quick to judge Yang Mi on Day 1 – she's barely there! But by Day 2 with Ep7, she really is 不爭氣 – doesn’t stand up for herself with her acting. She was the worst mourner there. Even the fake-criers (a real thing at Chinese funerals) were better. Good thing is that her character is mostly reserved. She can do that fine.

[Ending] Happy. Patriotic.

[A Highlight] Ep8 We all need a Big Feet (Da Jiao) who believes soup tastes better even after Xiu Xiu showered in the cooking pot 🤢❤️ (LOL. This was the first time I sided with Feng Er).

[Review & Rating]
The biggest hit of 2025 in China, and deservedly so. The ending stumbles (as they often do), but the ride getting there was enthralling.

I was hooked in the first five episodes, and I got trapped here even though the second half wasn’t really my type. What the show does brilliantly is spin misery into comedy, misfortune into fortune. Grim situations somehow became genuinely funny. An hated it. But An laughed. 😫

The early episodes shine brightest, painting a sweeping portrait of village life with small, memorable details: the rhythms of farming, grandpas spitting at each other, everyone (that is one man) panicking over a bathtub, or bargaining for an ox. Oh, and the marriage of the century. *Sniffles* However, I think I am the wrong audience for the action in the second half, which did get high praise. I just wanted farming for all 36 episodes.

Looking back, I realize each marriage shifted the whole story. There was Xiu Xiu, Su Su, Yin Zi's and even Madam Fei Zuo’s that lingered in the background. It felt like a thoughtful way of structuring such a sprawling story. They were all unexpected, and grounded.

Downside: the propaganda-lite melodrama. OF COURSE THERE IS. Upside of this downside: I still got sucked into this village where every character, no matter how minor, is part of the story.

My biggest treasure here is Ou Hao’s Da Jiao. My Big Feet, my big heart – and tragically, not nearly enough screen time. My close second: Xing Fei’s Su Su! And my third: beady-eyed Feng Er!! For these characters, it was worth the ride.

P.S. I am happy for Yang Mi and Ou Hao got a love for a change.

Rating: 3/5 Not my type of show, but with its pacing, packed plot, and lively characters, it made for a fun nine days of catching up at three episodes a day. Whew.
